Abstract:Urban overheating phenomenon is a global problem affecting the air quality and heat-related illnesses. With the rapid urban expansion of Hangzhou over the past two decades, it is critical to explore the synergism between urban heat islands (UHI) and land cover dynamics. Based on the land surface temperature (LST) derived from Landsat thermal sensor images, this study retrieved the UHI in Hangzhou from 2000 to 2020, and then detected spatio-temporal patterns of UHI effect from the perspective of urban expansion. The results show: (1) The UHI development in 20 years had gone through 4 periods: two rise periods (2000 – 2005 and 2010 – 2015), one decline period (2015 – 2020) and one stable period (2005 – 2010), while the strongest overall UHI effect was in 2015. (2) The UHI in Hangzhou was imbalanced, mainly distributed in the direction of southeast - northwest, centralized near the Qiantang River, moved to the southeast during 2000 – 2010 and to the northwest during 2010 –2020. (3) The area of the highest growth of UHI (UHI > 5°C) mainly distributed in the Binjiang district and its surrounding areas during 2000 –2005, extended to the east and to the northeast during 2005 – 2010 and 2010 – 2015, respectively, and scattered over Yuhang district and the southeast bank of Qiantang River during 2015 – 2020. (4) The UHI effect correlated with urban expansion, like the industrial districts always contributed to the peaks of UHI.
