Abstract:In this study, a series of copper species supported on TiO2 catalysts were synthesized. With respect to the CuO/TiO2 catalyst, around 75% NOx was reduced between 200 and 250 degrees C and a negative deNO(x) efficiency was achieved above 350 degrees C. The existence of plentiful reactive surface oxygen species favored the activation of NOx and NH3, thus leading to satisfactory activity levels at lower temperatures. Due to this, NH3 over-oxidized to NOx was also facilitated and the portion of NH3 reducing NOx to N-2 or N2O in the reactions showed a downward trend as temperature increased, which explained the decreasing high-temperature NOx removal efficiency of this sample. For CuSO4/TiO2 and SO2-treated CuO/TiO2 catalysts, the generation of plentiful strong acid sites at the expense of the reactive surface oxygen species suppressed the activation of NH3 and NOx to some extent at lower temperatures and also negatively affected the over-oxidation of NH3 to NOx at elevated temperatures, which explained the changes in the operating temperature window to a high temperature region.

Abstract:Background Currently selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) is considered as an effective approach to remove slipped ammonia from exhaust gas of NH3-fuel engines. But it is still challenging to achieve high NH3 conversion and N2 selectivity simultaneously. Methods Cu was introduced to modify V0.5/Pt0.04/TiO2 catalysts and the effects of Cu addition step and amounts on NH3 removal performance of the composite catalysts were investigated. Significant findings Compared to V0.5/Pt0.04/TiO2 catalyst, Cu0.5V0.5/Pt0.04/TiO2 catalyst exhibited a similar NH3 conversion rate but a much better N2 selectivity. When reaction temperature was higher than 225 °C, a complete NH3 removal could be achieved for Cu0.5V0.5/Pt0.04/TiO2 catalyst, while N2 selectivity was higher than 80 % in a wide temperature range of 225–375 °C. The introduction of Cu resulted in the formation of CuVO x species with strong catalytic oxidation activity due to double redox couples of V5+/V4+ and Cu2+/Cu1+. There was a synergistic effect between CuVO x species and Pt species, which significantly facilitated i-SCR reactions, thus improving N2 selectivity. As main intermediates, -NH2 species actively participated in NH3-SCO reactions over Cu0.5V0.5/Pt0.04/TiO2 catalyst.

Abstract:Selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia (NH3-SCO) has become an effective method to reduce ammonia (NH3) emissions, and is a key part to solve the problem of NH3 pollution. Nevertheless, the optimization of this technology's performance relies heavily on innovation and the development of catalyst design. In this study, a SmCuAgTiOx catalyst with an asymmetric Ag-Ov-Ti-Sm-Cu ring active site was prepared and applied to the NH3-SCO reaction. The low conversion of Cu-based catalysts in NH3 at low temperature and the inherent low N₂ selectivity of Ag-based catalysts were solved. The successful creation of the asymmetric ring active site improved the catalyst's reduction performance. Additionally, Cu, acting as an electron transfer medium, plays a crucial role in enhancing electron transfer within the asymmetric ring active site, thus increasing the redox cycle of the catalyst during the reaction. In addition, some lattice oxygen is lost in the catalyst, resulting in the formation of a large number of oxygen vacancies. This process stimulates the adsorption and activation of surface-adsorbed oxygen, facilitating the conversion of NH3 to an amide (NH2) intermediate during the reaction and reducing non-selective oxidation. The N2 selectivity was improved without significantly affecting the performance of Ag-based catalyst. In-situ diffuse reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (In-situ DRIFTS) analysis reveals that the SmCuAgTiOx catalyst primarily follows an "internal" selective catalytic reduction (iSCR) mechanism in the NH3-SCO reaction, complemented by the imide mechanism. The asymmetric Ag-Ov-Ti-Sm-Cu ring active site developed in this study provides a new perspective for efficiently solving NH3 pollution in the future.

Abstract:The N2 selectivity of selective catalytic oxidation of NH3 (NH3-SCO) at high temperatures is a great challenge. CeSnO x catalysts were synthesized by the coprecipitation method and systematically investigated. CeSnO x catalysts exhibited excellent N2 selectivity at high temperatures compared to CeO2. The possible SCO reaction mechanism and synergistic effect over CeSnO x catalysts for NH3-SCO performance were investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) characterization manifested that the concentrations of Oads, Ce3+, and acid sites were increased. It is speculated that the reaction mechanism followed the internal-SCR (i-SCR) mechanism through in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it was verified that after doping Sn, the oxygen vacancy of CeSnO x catalysts possessed reduced formation energy, resulting from the shifting of electron density to Sn, redistribution of charge, and the smaller conduction band of O 2p, which also could be much easier to adsorb and stabilize oxygen as active sites. In addition, Sn doping succeeded in inhibiting the competitive adsorption of OH and NH3 on the Ce site because Sn could preferentially adsorb OH and then adsorb and activate NH3. This work reveals the synergistic effect over CeSnO x catalysts for NH3-SCO performance, which is conducive to the rational design of cheap SCO catalysts replacing noble-metal-based catalysts.

Abstract:Ammonia-selective catalytic oxidation (NH3-SCO) is an effective technology to solve the problem of ammonia leakage from diesel vehicles, while ammonia oxidation catalysts (AOC) still suffer from insufficient low-temperature activity and poor nitrogen selectivity. Herein, we prepared a bifunctional Pt/Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst containing an SCO component (Pt) and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) component (Cu). This bifunctional catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance during NH3 oxidation under practical conditions containing water vapor, achieving >85% N2 selectivity over the whole temperature range. Catalysts were systematically characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. The results showed that metallic Pt nanoparticles were mainly present on the exterior surface of the Pt/Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite catalyst, while dispersed Cu2+ cations were present in the interior of the zeolite. Based on operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy with mass spectrometry experiments, it was confirmed that on Pt/SSZ-13, over-oxidation of NH3 produced large amounts of N2O and NO x at low and high temperatures, respectively, resulting in a poor N2 selectivity. With Cu present, in contrast, the byproduct (NO) would further react with adsorbed NH3 on Cu Lewis acid sites to produce N2 by a tandem SCR reaction, thus contributing to the superior N2 selectivity of the Pt/Cu-SSZ-13 bifunctional catalyst.

Herein, a strategy based on facilitating byproduct NOx reduction to N2 is demonstrated at CuOx/PtCu catalysts, aiming to tackle the low selectivity challenge. This PtCu alloy sample with a CuOx-rich surface displays an N2 selectivity of 95%, while its turnover frequencies are the highest among reported supported Pt-based catalysts. The enhanced reaction activities and N2 selectivities are primarily attributed to the Pt-Cuδ+ dual-site synergies at the CuOx/PtCu interface, in which dual sites exhibit distinct NH3 adsorption, activation, and dehydrogenation behaviors. The Olat assisted internal selective catalytic reduction mechanism at CuOx/PtCu with N2O22– as the central intermediates is proposed. Density functional theory calculation and temperature-programmed surface reaction measurements show that the N–O bond in N2O22– tends to break simultaneously with the assistance of Ov in CuOx followed by the easy transition from N2O22– to N2, which serve as the origin of the high selectivity.

Abstract:Herein, the influence of support type and properties on the catalytic activity and selectivity of Ag-based NH3-SCO catalyst was studied through the evaluation of NH3-SCO performance, the physicochemical characterization of H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD, N-2 isothermal adsorption-desorption, XPR and XPS, and the mechanism study of H-1 MAS NMR, In-situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations. Ag/nano-TiO2, Ag/Al2O3, and Ag/MnO2 all showed better NH3-SCO activity because of more abundant Br & oslash;nsted and Lewis acid sites of Al2O3 and TiO2 and more actual Ag loading amount due to the larger specific surface area and suitable surface chemistry. The N-2 selectivity of Ag/nano-TiO2 is significantly better, which may be due to the highly dispersed Ag species and the abundant Br & oslash;nsted acid sites with higher N-2 selectivity. The mechanism study showed that the terminal hydroxyl was the preferred consumption target of Ag species, and this consumption promoted the effective dispersion and stable anchoring of Ag on the TiO2 surface.

Abstract:A series of Ti-Nb binary oxide were synthesized by co-precipitation as supports to prepare Cu/Ti-Nb mixed oxide catalysts through wetness impregnation. The novel catalyst 0.8%Cu/Ti2NbOx exhibited an excellent catalytic activity and N-2 selectivity with a broad operation temperature (250-425 degrees C) under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 177,000 h(-1) for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3. A series of analytical techniques including high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), N-2-physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Laser Raman spectra (LRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) were used to investigate the correlations among catalyst structure, surface properties and catalytic performance. For the support Ti2NbOx, the specific surface area was larger than that of TiO2, promoting the high dispersion of the active component. Also, the surface acid sites were increased by addition of niobium oxide species and the redox capability of the support was enhanced by doping copper species. Moreover, the introduction of copper species effectively enhanced the catalytic performance within 225-400 degrees C. The copper species mainly existed as isolated Cu2+ and non-isolated Cu2+ and the isolated Cue(2+) ions played a significant role in the high NH3-SCR performance over 0.8%Cu/Ti2NbOx catalyst. Hydrothermal aging treatment experiment demonstrated that 0.8%Cu/Ti2NbOx catalyst had an excellent hydrothermal stability. In addition, water vapor or/and SO2 had a slightly reversible inhibition influence on the catalytic performance over 0.8%Cu/Ti2NbOx, indicating that it was a promising candidate for NH3-SCR catalyst in the future practical application. The reaction pathway over 0.8%Cu/Ti2NbOx catalyst followed both Eley-Rideal mechanism and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism at 225 degrees C. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of CuSO4/TiO2 binary oxide catalysts with different CuSO4 loadings (0-20 wt%) were prepared by a facile solid state impregnation protocol. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts and the NO reaction route were extensively characterized via N-2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, Raman, NH3-TPD, NO-TPD, H2-TPR, XPS, and in situ DRIFTS. The CuSO4 content had significant influence on catalytic activity. High CuSO4 loading favored the solid reaction between CuSO4 and TiO2, promoted the formation of sulfite and weak acid sites, and obviously increased the activity at temperatures below 340 degrees C. However, at a temperature higher than 340 degrees C, NH3 oxidation increased with CuSO4 loading and caused NOx conversion to decrease when the CuSO4 loading was higher than 10 wt%. Thus, the sample with 10 wt% CuSO4 loading presented the broadest temperature window and it also showed an excellent resistant to SO2 and H2O. Both Bronsted and Lewis acid sites were formed on the catalyst. S-OH of sulfate and sulfite were the main reason for formation of Bronsted acid sites. NH3-SCR reaction on CuSO4/TiO2 followed the Eley-Rideal mechanism: NH3 first adsorbed on Bronsted and Lewis acid sites as NH4+ and NH3, then reacted with gaseous NO and O-2 to form N-2 and H2O.
Structural Properties of PtCuO/Al2O3 surface catalyst for selective NH3 oxidation using operando spectroscopy

Abstract:Selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) of NH3 to N2 is one of the most effective methods to eliminate NH3 emissions. However, achieving high conversion over a wide operating temperature range while avoiding over-oxidation to NOx is a significant challenge. Commercial Pt catalysts have full NH3 conversion at low temperatures but suffer from low N2 selectivity. To mitigate this challenge, it is crucial to limit the over-oxidation of NH3. In this study, we developed a bi-metal surface catalyst with improved Pt atom efficiency. The PtSCuO/Al2O3 catalyst consists of Pt atoms on the surface of CuO nanoparticles. It achieves full NH3 conversion at 250 °C with WHSV of 600 mlNH3h-1g-1 which is 50 °C lower than the commercial Pt/Al2O3, and maintains high N2 selectivity through all temperature window (150-450 °C). At 200 °C, PtSCuO/Al2O3, exhibited a staggering 30-fold increase in activity compared to the commercial Pt/Al2O3. Operando XAFS studies reveal that the surface Pt atoms in PtSCuO/Al2O3 not only enhance the redox ability of Cu species but also alter the redox rate of Cu species, which improves the while reaction rate of the NH3-SCO reaction. Moreover, the synergistic effect of Pt sites and Cu sites in PtSCuO/Al2O3 contributes to improved selectivity via the internal selective catalytic reduction (i-SCR) route.

Abstract:NH3 emissions from industrial sources and possibly future energy production constitute a threat to human health because of their toxicity and participation in PM2.5 formation. Ammonia selective catalytic oxidation to N2 (NH3-SCO) is a promising route for NH3 emission control, but the mechanistic origin of achieving high N2 selectivity remains elusive. Here we constructed a highly N2-selective CuO/TiO2 catalyst and proposed a CuOx dimer active site based on the observation of a quadratic dependence of NH3-SCO reaction rate on CuOx loading, ac-STEM, and ab initio thermodynamic analysis. Combining this with the identification of a critical N2H4 intermediate by in situ DRIFTS characterization, a comprehensive N2H4-mediated reaction pathway was proposed by DFT calculations. The high N2 selectivity originated from the preference for NH2 coupling to generate N2H4 over NH2 dehydrogenation on the CuOx dimer active site. This work could pave the way for the rational design of efficient NH3-SCO catalysts.

Abstract:A series of xCu ‐TiO2 obtained from the sol‐gel method were tested for NH3 selective catalytic oxidation (NH3‐SCO). Its performance was higher than that of supported Cu/TiO2‐Im and solvent‐free Cu/TiO2‐SF. The catalyst exhibits better water resistance at 300 °C. XRD, Raman, and H2‐TPR proved that the crystal lattice of TiO2 was deformed by Cu doping, which increased the specific surface area of the catalyst. The dispersion of the Cu component is further enhanced. The enhancement of redox potential was the key to improving catalytic activity. The NH3‐TPD results prove that more acidic sites promote more active NH3 species being adsorbed and dissociated on the catalyst surface. The in‐situ DRIFTs results certify that the NH3 species adsorbed on the Lewis acid sites were easier to consume than those on the Brønsted acid sites. The DFT theoretical calculation demonstrates that the doped Cu promotes the TiO2 conduction band to move closer to the Fermi level and enhances the redox performance of the catalyst. The results suggest that the Cu‐TiO2 catalyst was a potential catalyst under actual working conditions, which would provide a technological reserve for the development and diffusion of ammonia slip for both mobile and fixed sources.

The Unique CO Activation Effects for Boosting NH3 Selective Catalytic Oxidation over CuOx-CeO2.

Abstract:Slip NH3 is a priority pollutant of concern to be removed in various flue gases with NOx and CO after denitrification using NH3-SCR or NH3-SNCR, and the simultaneous catalytic removal of NH3 and CO has become one of the new topics in the deep treatment of such flue gases. Synergistic catalytic oxidation of CO and NH3 appears to be a promising method but still has many challenges. Due to the competition for active oxidizing species, CO was supposed to hinder the NH3 selective catalytic oxidation (NH3-SCO). However, it is first found that CO could significantly promote NH3-SCO over the CuOx-CeO2 catalyst. The NH3 conversion rates increased linearly with CO concentrations in the range of 180-300 °C. Specifically, it accelerated by 2.8 times with 10,000 ppm CO inflow at 220 °C. Mechanism studies found that the Cu-O-Ce solid solution was more active for CO oxidation, while the CuOx species facilitated the NH3 dehydrogenation and mitigated the competition of NH3 and CO, further stabilizing the promotion effects. Gaseous CO boosted the generation of active isolated oxygen atoms (Oi) by actuating the Cu+/Cu2+ redox cycle. The enriched Oi facilitated oxidation of NH3 to NO and was conducive to the NH3-SCO via the i-SCR approach. This study tapped the potential of CO for promoting simultaneous catalytic oxidation of coexisting pollutants in the flue gas.
Synthesis of TixSn1-xO2 mixed metal oxide for copper catalysts as high-efficiency NH3 selective catalytic oxidation

Abstract:A series of y Cu/TixSn1-xO2 catalysts for selective catalytic oxidation (NH3-SCO) were synthesized using TixSn1-xO2 as catalyst support and CuO as active species. Compared with pure TiO2 support, the strong metal-support interaction between Cu active species and TixSn1-xO2 was significantly promoted by the Sn-doping, thereby improving the catalytic activity and N2 selectivity of the catalyst, which meets the demand of diesel vehicles to completely convert NH3. The results of XRD and HRTEM showed that the particle size of 20 Cu/TiSnO2 sample is much more highly dispersed. The results of NH3-TPD and in-situ DRIFTS indicated that the copper species in 20 Cu/TixSn1-xO2 can provide more Lewis acid sites than 20 Cu/TiO2, which is conducive to the adsorption and reaction of NH3. Meanwhile, XPS results proved that adsorbed oxygen on the catalyst surface is the main active oxygen species. Finally, in-situ DRIFTs and kinetic measurements found that the NH3-SCO reaction over 20 Cu/TiSnO2 and 20 Cu/TiO2 follow the i-SCR and imide (–NH) mechanisms, respectively. This catalyst will provide solutions for the future design and application of ammonia slip from mobile and stationary sources.

Abstract:Spinel nano-Co3O4 was prepared by solid-state reaction at room temperature and investigated for selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR). Although suffering from pore filling and plugging, treatment of this catalyst by SO2 showed novel promoting effect on NH3-SCR above 250°C. Bulk cobalt sulfate was observed over the sulfated Co3O4 with XRD, which would be an active component for NH3-SCR. The sulphated Co3O4 catalyst exhibited good resistance to SO2 (500ppm, 100ppm) and 10% H2O at a space velocity of about 25000h−1 at 300°C, as tested for 12h.

Abstract:CeMnOx catalyst was synthesized by the combustion method, and the supported Ti/CeMnOx catalyst was subsequently prepared by wetness impregnation. Ti/CeMnOx catalyst exhibited higher N-2 selectivity than CeMnOx catalyst in the selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 (NH3-SCR), and the generation of side products including in N2O and NO2 were discussed. N-2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) were carried out to reveal the promotion effect of TiO2 on the N-2 selectivity of CeMnOx catalyst. Results indicated that loading TiO2 weakened the redox ability and enhanced the NH3 adsorption ability of CeMnOx catalyst, and thus inhibited NO/NH3 oxidation and facilitated the Eley-Rideal reaction pathways even at higher temperature.
Promoting effect of acid sites on NH3-SCO activity with water vapor participation for Pt-Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) slip from denitration (deNOx) process has been increasingly concerned due to the recent findings that NH3 played an important role in promoting the formation of haze. Considering the high-temperature and humidity application conditions of diesel exhaust and the location of NH3-SCO system, Pt/Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst was selected. In this work, Pt-Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts with two different Si/Al ratios (25, 50) were prepared through ion-exchange method and the NH3-SCO activity were compared both in dry and wet (5% H2O) circumstances. The Si/Al 25 sample exhibited higher intrinsic activity (dry circumstance) than the Si/Al 50 sample. However, with H2O addition the activity of Si/Al 25 sample decreased dramatically while Si/Al 50 sample maintained higher level. BET, XRD, XPS, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD and in situ DRIFTS characterization results showed that abundant metallic Pt (Pt°) was beneficial to NH3-SCO activity, strong acid site determined the water-resisting property of the catalysts during NH3-SCO with H2O participation.
