Abstract:Phosphate (P) is an irreplaceable resource for the growth of all living organisms, and the impending exhaustion of minable P rock arouses the demand of P recovery, which further promotes the novel technologies development. To reclaim the P from wastewater or sludge conveniently and efficiently, a novel magnetic adsorbent with La-Zr bimetallic modification (La-Zr@Fe3O4) possessing a high affinity to phosphate and rapid separation was proposed in this study. Adsorption tests showed that the adsorption capacity of P on La-Zr@Fe3O4 increased with La content, reaching the maximum value of 49.3 mg/g at pH 3 by L1Z2. Whereas, the addition of La resulted in the decline of desorption efficiency from -85% to -60% in the pH range from 3 to 6, except pH 2. The kinetics of P adsorption on the La-Zr@Fe3O4 was described well by the pseudo-second-order model, while the isotherm of P adsorption was fitted well by the Freundlich model. Besides, the adsorbent exhibited high selectivity towards P over other coexisting ions (Cl- , NO3? , SO4 2?, Mg2+, and Ca2+). The feasibility of P recovery from the solid phase was investigated and confirmed by P recovery from fish farm sludge. The 90% removal efficiency of P and 88% desorption efficiency in cyclic adsorption/desorption experiments evidenced the stability and reusability of La-Zr magnetic adsorbent. The analysis of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the replacement of OH? with phosphate via the ligand exchange was the adsorption mechanism. This work demonstrated that the highly efficient, rapidly separable, and repeatable LaZr@Fe3O4 has the potential for phosphate sequestration and recovery.
Investigation into lanthanum-coated biochar obtained from urban dewatered sewage sludge for enhanced phosphate adsorption

Abstract:Phosphate adsorption using metal-modified biochar has awakened much attention and triggered extensive research. In this study, the effect of lanthanum (La)-modified sludge using impregnation-co-precipitation was used for phosphate adsorption. Consequently, La-coated biochar at a pyrolysis temperature of 600 degrees C had the highest phosphate adsorption and the lowest heavy metal leaching potential. The treatment of virgin biochar with alkali before La loading was found to be beneficial for the increase of phosphate adsorption capacity. The adsorption kinetics was well depicted by the pseudo-second-order model, and indicating that intraparticle diffusion played a crucial role in the adsorption process. The good fitness between adsorption data and the Langmuir isotherm model showed a maximal adsorption capacity of 93.91 mg/g, where phosphate absorption was highly correlated to its concentration in the solution. The La-coated biochar showed high adsorption capacity when the solution pH varied from 3.0 to 6.0, and was insensitive to the coexisting chloride, nitrate, sulfate, bicarbonate and citrate. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism was further explored by using Zeta potential analysis, FT1R and XPS, indicating that the phosphate is adsorbed through electrostatic attraction in the form of the innersphere complexation. All the results suggested that the sludge-based biochar, as a support material for La, could serve as a promising adsorbent for phosphate in real applications. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Application and functionalization of toxic waste sludge-derived biochar for efficient phosphate separation from aqueous media: toxicity diminution, robust adsorption, and inner mechanism

Abstract:Phosphorus control and the disposal of municipal solid waste have drawn increasing concerns. Herein, we reported the reutilization and functionalization of highly toxic waste sludge derived from landfill leachate treatment process for biochar preparation and therefore phosphate elimination from aqueous media. Toxicity analysis confirmed largely declined heavy metal leaching and diminished ecological risks during biochar pyrolysis, providing a feasible option for the disposal and reutilization of toxic waste. Pre-loading of lanthanum rendered fabricated biochar with robust phosphate adsorption capacity, with optimized composite achieving maximum capacity of ∼94.4 mg P/g at pH 6. Effects of environmental factors, especially co-existing species (anions, cations and dissolved organic matters), were systematically evaluated combining experimental results and characterization analysis. Thereafter, adsorption behaviors of synthesized samples including kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamics were comprehensively explored. In virtue of characterization analysis, physicochemical properties of different composites and phosphate separation mechanism that involved electrostatic attraction and inner-sphere complexation were fully probed. Overall work investigated the feasibility of toxicity reduction via pyrolysis, phosphate uptake performance and inner mechanism, therefore highlighting the potential of waste reutilization for environmental remediation.

Abstract:A novel limestone-modified biochar derived from sewage sludge was prepared to reclaim phosphorus (P) from aqueous solution, and the potential application of P-laden biochar as soil amendments was also investigated. The limestone-modified biochar demonstrated excellent performance on phosphate recovery from aqueous solution in a wide range of pH (2.0-11.0), with maximum adsorption capacity of the biochar (Limestone/sludge mass ratio of 3:1) up to 231.28 mg P/g, which was 10.7 times that of the original sludge biochar. The adsorption was well described by the pseudo second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. According to the adsorption thermodynamic parameters, the phosphate adsorption was spontaneous (ΔG0 < 0) and endothermic (ΔH0 > 0) so that increasing the temperature was beneficial to adsorption. Characterization analysis by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) proved that electrostatic attraction, surface complexation and brushite (CaHPO4.2H2O) precipitation were the dominant mechanism. The P-laden biochar exhibited an excellent ability to be reused as a new slow-release P fertilizer for soil. Pot experiment results showed that the treatment of P-laden LB 3:1 (P content of 22.8%) addition (1 wt%) significantly promoted Indian Lettuce germination (increasing by 14.4%), plant height (increasing by 18.6%), and dry biomass (53.0%) compared with the control, though it underperformed compared to commercial fertilizer.

Abstract:Excess phosphorus (P) in water can lead to eutrophication and upset ecological balance. In this study, biochar with ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets from the natural mesocarp of shaddock was chosen as the carrier. The highly dispersed and small particle size of La(OH) 3 on the surface of the nanosheets (MSBL3) was successfully achieved using chemical impregnation for the adsorption of P in aqueous solution, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 260.0 mg P g −1 [La]. The differences in surface crystallization of La(OH) 3 on biochar at different La loadings were analyzed using the high-precision characterization methods. After six adsorption–desorption cycles, MSBL3 retained 76.7% of its initial performance in terms of the P adsorption capacity. The preparation of 1 g of MSBL3 costs about RMB 1, and it could reduce the P concentration in 2.6 ton of Laoyu River water to below the eutrophication threshold; and the inhibitory effect of MSBL3 on the eutrophication of water bodies was confirmed by the growth state of water hyacinth. Furthermore, 0.1 M MSBL3 could inhibit Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus up to 98.7% and 85.0%, respectively, which indicates that MSBL3 can be used to recover P from water and also to improve water quality. In addition, the growth of the maize seedlings verified that the P-absorbed MSBL3 waste is a good soil fertilizer and can solve the problem of post-treatment of the adsorbent. In conclusion, MSBL3 prepared in this study is a promising P sorbent for application.

Abstract:The excessive application of phosphate fertilizers easily causes water eutrophication. Phosphorus recovery by adsorption is regarded as an effective and simple intervention to control water bodies' eutrophication. In this work, a series of new adsorbents, layered double hydroxides (LDHs)-modified biochar (BC) with different molar ratios of Mg2+ and Fe3+, were synthesized based on waste jute stalk and used for recycling phosphate from wastewater. The prepared LDHs-BC4 (the molar ratio of Mg/Fe is 4:1) has significantly high adsorption performance, and the recovery rate of phosphate is about 10 times higher than that of the pristine jute stalk BC. The maximum adsorption capacity of LDHs-BC4 for phosphate was 10.64 mg-P/g. The main mechanism of phosphate adsorption mainly includes electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, ligand exchange, and intragranular diffusion. Moreover, the phosphate-adsorbed LDHs-BC4 could promote mung bean growth, which indicated the recovery phosphate from wastewater could be used as a fertilizer.
Lanthanum/iron co-modified biochar for highly efficient adsorption of low-concentration phosphate from aqueous solution

Abstract:Given the rigorous discharge standards and the low-concentration phosphate in wastewater, there is an urgent demand for the development of economically efficient materials and technologies for removing low-concentration phosphate. In this study, a highly efficient adsorbent for low-concentration phosphate, known as lanthanum and iron co-modified sawdust biochar(La-MBC), was successfully synthesized. The La-MBC displayed outstanding adsorption performance in the treatment of low-concentration phosphate wastewater with a phosphate removal rate of around 100% when the phosphate concentration was below 1.0 mg/L. Moreover, the results of adsorption isotherms indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of phosphate by La-MBC was nearly 27.49 mg/g. The results demonstrated that La-MBC maintained significant stability in phosphate adsorption, achieving a removal efficiency exceeding 90% across the pH range of 4 to 8. More attractively, La-MBC has been demonstrated impressive selectivity in adsorbing phosphate, even in the presence of competing ions. Characterization findings and adsorption experiments provided evidence that the adsorption of phosphate by La-MBC was mainly driven by chemisorption. Collectively, these findings strongly indicate that La-MBC is an exceptional choice for efficiently removing low-concentration phosphate in real-world applications.

Abstract:Lanthanum (La)-based adsorbents have gained increasing attentions because of their intriguing characteristic for phosphate removal. This study developed a recyclable granular adsorbent-La modified bio-ceramisite (La@BC) through coprecipitation method and use it to remove phosphate from wastewater. Batch and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of La@BC. The results showed that La@BC had a high phosphate adsorption capacity (136 mg P/g La), the adsorption process can be well described by Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In addition, La@BC had a widely applicable pH range of 4-12, well selective adsorption performance in the presence of coexisting ions (Cl-, NO3-, HCO3-, and SO42-) and exhibited excellent recoverability and separability in five continuous adsorption-desorption cycles operation. Studying of removal mechanisms indicated that phosphate was successfully adsorbed by La@BC, and La-complex (LaPO4) microprecipitation and electrostatic interaction may play a prominent role in phosphate removal. Column operation shown that La@BC adsorbents were highly efficient for phosphate removal. The all outlet phosphate concentrations were below 0.1 mg/L during a sixty-day monitoring period (inlet phosphate concentration was 1 mg/L). Because of superior removal capacity and good liquid-solid separability, granular La@BC adsorbent can efficiently avoid appreciable problems caused by powder adsorbent, and has a great potential for phosphate control in shallow eutrophic waters.

Abstract:Lanthanum-based adsorbents are promising phosphate (P) adsorbents and their selectivity determines their potential for application in P recovery. However, there have been few systematic studies for quantifying the selectivity of lanthanum-based adsorbents for P. In this study, lanthanum carbonate/biochar (LCB300) and lanthanum hydroxide/biochar (LHB800) composites were synthesized to quantify their selectivity for P adsorption. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of environmental factors on their selectivity. The results showed that both LCB300 and LHB800 exhibit similar maximum adsorption capacities for P (64.3 and 65.0 mg g−1, respectively). However, the selectivity of LHB800 (90–100%) for P was higher than that of LCB300 (73–99%), and the former was less susceptible to environmental conditions than the latter. In addition, competing ions accelerated the intermediate process of P adsorption by LHB800, but slightly inhibited the adsorption rate of LCB300 for P. These results show that the form of lanthanum on the adsorbent affects its adsorption mechanism and corresponding selectivity for P. Moreover, LHB800 demonstrates significant potential for application in the recovery of phosphate from wastewater.

Abstract:The production of sludge-based biochar to recover phosphorus (P) from wastewater and reuse the recovered phosphorus as agricultural fertilizer is a preferred process. This article mainly studied the removal of phosphate (PO 4 -P) from aqueous solution by synthesizing sludge-based biochar (MgSBC-0.1) from anaerobic fermentation sludge treated with magnesium (Mg)-loading-modification, and compared it with unmodified sludge-based biochar (SBC). The physicochemical properties, adsorption efficiency, and adsorption mechanism of MgSBC-0.1 were studied. The results showed that the surface area of MgSBC-0.1 synthesized increased by 5.57 times. The material surface contained MgO, Mg(OH) 2 , and CaO nanoparticles. MgSBC-0.1 can effectively remove phosphate in the initial solution pH range of 3.00–7.00, with a fitted maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity of 379.52 mg·g -1 . The adsorption conforms to the pseudo second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm adsorption curve. The characterization of the adsorbed composite material revealed the contribution of phosphorus crystal deposition and electrostatic attraction to phosphorus absorption.

Abstract:Residual sludge is a significant waste resource, and the preparation of biochar achieves sludge disposal. Biochar has a high uptake capacity for phosphate. To prepare a sludge biochar adsorbent for phosphate, sludge was chemically and anaerobically treated in the presence of iron salts and pyrolyzed. We investigated the effects of the pyrolysis temperature and iron salt on the phosphate uptake capacity, finding that the pretreatment of the sludge with iron salts removed intrinsic phosphate, thus improving the uptake ability. The optimal adsorbent, denoted SB-B-Fe, was prepared by pyrolysis at 700 °C and subsequently modified with a 20 g/L iron-containing solution, yielding a phosphate uptake capacity of 0.5 mg/g. Further, the performance of SB-B-Fe remains high at pH 5–9 and is less affected by interfering anions. The sorption kinetics are consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, suggesting uptake by chemisorption, and the Langmuir model has a saturation capacity of 0.85 mg/g for uptake and prefers monolayer molecular uptake. The characterization showed that the adsorbent surface provided many uptake sites for phosphate and a high specific surface area. We hope that these findings will encourage the development of other value-added waste-based materials for environmental remediation.

Treating waste with waste: adsorption behavior and mechanism of phosphate in water by modified phosphogypsum biochar

Abstract:The use of green methods to treat industrial waste and waste reuse has become a key environmental issue. In order to achieve this goal, this study treated waste phosphogypsum (PG) and produced modified PG biochar to adsorb and remove phosphorus from PG leachate, so that the PG pollution problem was controlled. In this study, PG was modified with sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) to prepare a modified PG biochar that was used for the removal of phosphorus-containing wastewater. An X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the modified PG revealed that the main component was calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and a suitable amount of modified PG could load calcium oxide (CaO) onto the biochar and improve its physical properties. The experimental results showed that the modified PG biochar had a maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity of 132 mg/g. A further investigation of the mechanism of adsorption revealed the importance of electrostatic attraction and chemical precipitation, and it was found that the CaO in the modified PG biochar could effectively facilitate the conversion of phosphate to hydroxylapatite (Ca5(PO4)3OH) in water. The phosphorus removal rate from leachate obtained from a landfill containing PG was 99.38% for a specific dose of the modified PG biochar. In this study, a PG pollution control technology was developed to realize the goal of replacing waste with waste.
Novel utilization exploration for the dephosphorization waste of Ca–modified biochar: enhanced removal of heavy metal ions from water

Abstract:Phosphorus-modified biochar has been proven to enhance the precipitation and complexation of heavy metal ions from wastewater. However, the current modification methods require large amounts of exogenous P and have high energy consumption. Hence, this study proposes and analyzes a strategy integrating biochar production, phosphorus wastewater treatment, dephosphorization waste recovery, and heavy metal removal. "BC-Ca-P" was derived from Ca-modified biochar after phosphorus wastewater treatment. The adsorption of Pb(II) by BC-Ca-P followed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo–second–order kinetic models. The maximum adsorption capability of 361.20 mg·g −1 at pH 5.0 for 2 h was markedly greater than that of external phosphorous-modified biochar. The adsorption mechanisms were dominated by chemical precipitation and complexation. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations indicated that oxygen-containing functional groups (P-O and C-O) contributed the most to the efficient adsorption of Pb(II) onto BC-Ca-P. To explore its practical feasibility, the adsorption performance of BC-Ca-P recovered from an actual environment was evaluated. The continuous-flow adsorption behavior was investigated and well-fitted utilizing the Thomas and Yoon–Nelson models. There was a negligible P leakage risk of BC-Ca-P during heavy metal treatment. This study describes a novel and sustainable method to utilize dephosphorization waste for heavy metal removal.

Abstract:Sustainable and eco-friendly sewage sludge treatment and disposal are crucial for pollution prevention, resource utilization, and control. This study used solid sewage sludge and Pistia stratiotes to produce high-performance biochar through modification and high-temperature pyrolysis. The resulting biochar was used to adsorb ammonia nitrogen and phosphate in wastewater, leading to the development of a green and safe value-added fertilizer. Results showed that the combination of Pistia stratiotes and chemical modification optimized the biochar's pore structure, enhanced chemical functional groups, and immobilized heavy metals. The pseudo -second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model provided better fitting for the adsorption process. The combination of magnesium chloride and Pistia stratiotes treatment exhibited the highest adsorption perfor-mance for ammonia nitrogen and phosphate, with maximum theoretical saturation capacities of 62.47 mg g-1 and 33.56 mg g-1. BET, FTIR, and SEM-EDS analysis revealed that surface functional groups, ion exchange, chemical co-precipitation, electrostatic adsorption, and physical adsorption were the main adsorption mecha-nisms. Regarding desorption, the ammonia nitrogen and phosphate release rates of the value-added fertilizer were remarkably low during the rapid release stage (0-40 min), with only 20.34% and 33.97%, respectively. Moreover, in a pot experiment, the showed greater potential for lettuce growth compared to raw biochar, especially when modified with magnesium chloride, resulting in a 53.78% increase in lettuce biomass. In conclusion, the proposed approach for sewage sludge treatment and disposal offers significant environmental and agricultural benefits through solid waste resource utilization ammonia nitrogen-phosphate recovery from wastewater.
Synergistic role of inherent calcium and iron minerals in paper mill sludge biochar for phosphate adsorption

Abstract:Phosphate adsorption using metal-based biochar has awakened much attention and triggered extensive research. In this study, novel Ca/Fe-rich biochars were prepared via a one-step process of pyrolyzing paper mill sludge (PMS) at various temperatures (300, 500, 700, and 800 °C) under a CO2 atmosphere for phosphate removal. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the biochar obtained at 800 °C (PB-800), which could be easily separated magnetically, exhibited the best phosphate adsorption capacity in a wide range of solution pH (5–11). Based on the Langmuir model, the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity for PB-800 was 17.33 mg/g. Besides, the effects of ambient temperature as well as coexisting ions on phosphate removal were also investigated. Kinetic and thermodynamic analysis revealed that chemisorption dominated the adsorption process. The calcium carbonate and ferric salts in the sludge were converted into CaO and Fe3O4 through pyrolysis at 800 °C. The CaO inherent in PB-800 was proved to serve as active sites for the chemical precipitation, showing its synergistic effect with iron oxide compounds (i.e., Fe3O4, α-Fe2O3) on phosphate removal through chemical precipitation, ligand exchange, and complexation. This study not only provides a feasible waste-to-wealth strategy for converting PMS into a Ca/Fe-rich magnetic biochar that can be used as an effective phosphate adsorbent, but also offers new insights into the synergistic effect of calcium and iron species for the adsorption of phosphate using biochar.

Abstract:The defective phosphorus (P) removal performance of biochar (BC) inhibited its application in constructed wetland (CW). In this study, a novel Lanthanum-ammonia-modified hydrothermal biochar (La-A-HC) was prepared and used as a modified substrate for CW to enhance its P removal. Results showed that La-A-HC had satisfactory P adsorption ability (qm = 43.1 mg P/g) under various pH, ionic strength, and competing ions. TP removal rate of La-A-HC modified CW (i.e., La-CW) was 14.8% higher than CW modified with BC, which was mainly attributed to the formation of La-O-P inner-sphere complexation. Substrate adsorption accounted for 90.9% of P removal in La-CW. Furthermore, the dissolved organic matter (DOM) of La-A-HC promoted the growth of γ-Proteobacteria and the proliferation of phosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs, 4.02 ± 0.03 × 105 copy numbers g−1). The plants in La-CW also showed higher photosynthesize rate since La-A-HC enhanced its tolerance to stronger light.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction has the potential to exploit resources from municipal sewage sludge. It converts most organics into a liquid biofuel (biocrude), concentrates P in the solid residue (hydrochar), and consequently enables its efficient recovery. This study thoroughly evaluated the effects of extraction conditions on P and metal release from hydrochar by nitric acid. Among assessed factors, acid normality (0.02–1 N), liquid-to-solid ratio (5–100 mL/g), and contact time (0–24 h) had positive effects while decreasing eluate pH (0.5–4) improved leaching efficiencies of P and metals. Notably, eluate pH played a dominant role in P leaching and pH < 1.5 was crucial for complete extraction. P and metal leaching from hydrochar have strong interactions and their leaching mechanism was identified as product layer diffusion using the shrinking core model. This suggests that the leaching efficiency is susceptible to agitation and particle size but not temperature. Using 10 mL/g of 0.6 N HNO 3 for 2 h was considered the best extraction condition for efficient P leaching (nearly 100%) and minimization of cost and contaminants (heavy metals). Following extraction, adding Ca(OH) 2 at a Ca:P molar ratio of 1.7–2 precipitated most P (99–100%) at pH 5–6, while a higher pH (13) synthesized hydroxyapatite. The recovered precipitates had high plant availability (61–100%) of P and satisfactory concentrations of heavy metals as fertilizers in Canada and the US. Overall, this study established reproducible procedures for P recovery from hydrochar and advanced one step closer to wastewater biorefinery.

Abstract:Effective removal of phosphorus from water is crucial for controlling eutrophication. Meanwhile, the post-disposal of wetland plants is also an urgent problem that needs to be solved. In this study, seedpods of the common wetland plant lotus were used as a new raw material to prepare biochar, which were further modified by loading nano La(OH) 3 particles (LBC-La). The adsorption performance of the modified biochar for phosphate was evaluated through batch adsorption and column adsorption experiments. Adsorption performance of lotus seedpod biochar was significantly improved by La(OH) 3 modification, with adsorption equilibrium time shortened from 24 to 4 h and a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity increased from 19.43 to 52.23 mg/g. Moreover, LBC-La maintained a removal rate above 99% for phosphate solutions with concentrations below 20 mg/L. The LBC-La exhibited strong anti-interference ability in pH (3–9) and coexisting ion experiments, with the removal ratio remaining above 99%. The characterization analysis indicated that the main mechanism is the formation of monodentate or bidentate lanthanum phosphate complexes through inner sphere complexation. Electrostatic adsorption and ligand exchange are also the mechanisms of LBC-La adsorption of phosphate. In the dynamic adsorption experiment of simulated wastewater treatment plant effluent, the breakthrough point of the adsorption column was 1620 min, reaching exhaustion point at 6480 min, with a theoretical phosphorus saturation adsorption capacity of 6050 mg/kg. The process was well described by the Thomas and Yoon–Nelson models, which indicated that this is a surface adsorption process, without the internal participation of the adsorbent.
