Abstract:Quaternary ammonium and phosphonium borane bifunctional catalysts have shown high catalytic performance in ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of epoxides to produce polyether. Herein, we systematically investigate a series of well-defined organoboron catalysts by varying the electronic and steric properties of the Lewis acidic boron (B) centers, manipulating the steric hindrance on the ammonium cation (N+), adjusting the distance between B and N+, and regulating the nucleic B number of the catalysts. The investigation on the dinuclear catalysts indicated that the reactivity of a given catalyst could be speculated by its B- N-B angle and the B center dot center dot center dot B distance. We found that the increase of Lewis acidity and the number of B centers of the organoboron catalysts are useful for a high catalytic activity for ROP of epoxides. The Lewis acidity of the B centers was determined using the acceptor numbers, showing an order of borinane (23.4) > BBN (21.7) > BCy2 (18.8) > Bpin (15.5). Moreover, we demonstrated the production of various telechelic polyols in the presence of different chain transfer agents using the organoboron catalysts. The produced telechelic samples have a well-defined terminal functionality with controllable molecular weight. Lastly, these organoboron catalysts were utilized to produce block copolymers, allyl-terminated macromonomers, and random copolymers.

Abstract:Switchable catalysis, in combination with epoxide-involved ring-opening (co)polymerization, is a powerful technique that can be used to synthesize various oxygen-rich block copolymers. Despite intense research in this field, the sequence-controlled polymerization from epoxide congeners has never been realized due to their similar ring-strain which exerts a decisive influence on the reaction process. Recently, quaternary ammonium (or phosphonium)-containing bifunctional organoboron catalysts have been developed by our group, showing high efficiency for various epoxide conversions. Herein, we, for the first time, report an operationally simple pathway to access well-defined polyether-block-polycarbonate copolymers from mixtures of epoxides by switchable catalysis, which was enabled through thermodynamically and kinetically preferential ring-opening of terminal epoxides or internal epoxides under different atmospheres (CO2 or N2) using one representative bifunctional organoboron catalyst. This strategy shows a broad substrate scope as it is suitable for various combinations of terminal epoxides and internal epoxides, delivering corresponding well-defined block copolymers. NMR, MALDI-TOF, and gel permeation chromatography analyses confirmed the successful construction of polyether-block-polycarbonate copolymers. Kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations elucidate the reversible selectivity between different epoxides in the presence/absence of CO2. Moreover, by replacing comonomer CO2 with cyclic anhydride, the well-defined polyether-block-polyester copolymers can also be synthesized. This work provides a rare example of sequence-controlled polymerization from epoxide mixtures, broadening the arsenal of switchable catalysis that can produce oxygen-rich polymers in a controlled manner.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.
Vinyl-Functionalized Polyolefins for Fast Photovoltaic Cell Encapsulation

Abstract:Polyolefins (POs) are considered a promising candidate for photovoltaic cell encapsulation due to their high volume resistivity, low water-vapor permeability, and outstanding outdoor stability. However, POs without functionalization have a low rate of cross-linking, which significantly slows the solar cell encapsulation process. Herein, we describe the use of a polymer product-engineering approach in which reactive pendent vinyl groups are controllably incorporated in PO polymer chains to accelerate their cross-linking reactions. The POs having limited vinyl functionalities of 0.02-0.37 mol % were synthesized via the copolymerization of ethylene, 1-octene, and vinylnorbornene or 1,9-decadiene at different monomer concentrations. The vinyl groups in the POs readily react with curing agents, increasing cross-linking rates by 14-fold up to 179.7 Pa.s(-1), as measured by the enhancement of the storage modulus (G'). The maximum G' value representing the melt strength was also increased from 11.3 to 69.0 kPa due to the high curing degree in the POs. The use of a curing agent could be reduced by 50%, and no curing coagent was required in the PO curing process. The vinyl-functionalized POs had a light transmittance of 91%, a good volume resistivity of 7.05 X 10(16) Omega.m, a low water-vapor permeability of 2.31 x 10(-12) g.m.m(-2) s(-1).Pa-1, and an improved mechanical strength after curing. The damp-heat and UV aging had little effect on their light transmittance. Our approach of synthesizing functional POs with pendent vinyl groups thus promises the development of new high-performance polymer materials for photovoltaic cell encapsulation.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymer networks have long been recognized. With the initial focus on the unintended impact of dynamic covalent linkages on the viscoelasticity of commercial rubbers, efforts in modern times have transitioned into designing dynamic covalent polymer networks with unique adaptive properties. Whereas self‐healing and thermoset reprocessing have been the primary motivations for studying dynamic covalent polymer networks, the recent discovery of the vitrimeric rheological behavior and solid‐state plasticity for this type of material have opened up new opportunities in material innovations. This, coupled with the revelation of the dynamic characteristics of commercially relevant polymer building blocks such as esters and urethanes, suggests a promising future for this class of materials.

Abstract:We found radical polymerization of vinyl boronic acid pinacol ester (VBpin) was accompanied by a back-biting chain transfer reaction to polymer backbone and thus branched chains were generated via the propagation from the mid-chain radical. The subsequent oxidation for the boron pendant afforded a branched poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), which was certainly supported by NMR structural analyses. The synthesis of the branched PVA is inaccessible via radical polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and subsequent saponification because the VAc polymerization favors the chain transfer reaction to pendant methyl group over that to the backbone. Our effort was also directed to tuning branch degree via copolymerization of VBpin with VAc for studies in effects of branch degree on the physical properties, such as solubility in water and crystallization in bulk state.

Abstract:The construction of complex polymer architectures with well-defined topology, composition and functionality has been extensively explored as the molecular basis for the development of modern polymer materials. The unique reaction kinetics of free-radical polymerization leads to the concurrent formation of crosslinks between polymer chains and rings within an individual chain and, thus, free-radical (co)polymerization of multivinyl monomers provides a facile method to manipulate chain topology and functionality. Regulating the relative contribution of these intermolecular and intramolecular chain-propagation reactions is the key to the construction of architecturally complex polymers. This can be achieved through the design of new monomers or by spatially or kinetically controlling crosslinking reactions. These mechanisms enable the synthesis of various polymer architectures, including linear, cyclized, branched and star polymer chains, as well as crosslinked networks. In this Review, we highlight some of the contemporary experimental strategies to prepare complex polymer architectures using radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers. We also examine the recent development of characterization techniques for sub-chain connections in such complex macromolecules. Finally, we discuss how these crosslinking reactions have been engineered to generate advanced polymer materials for use in a variety of biomedical applications.

Abstract:Vinyl polymers are typically synthesized through the addition polymerization of corresponding vinyl compounds. However, the polymerization ability significantly depends on the substituent on the vinyl moiety, resulting in various synthetic limitations in the molecular structure of vinyl polymers. Given the increasing societal demand for enhanced properties and functions of polymer materials, innovative synthetic technologies are required for developing next-generation polymers through flexible molecular design. The author has made considerable efforts to overcome these limitations in polymer synthesis by employing alkenyl boronates as monomers for radical polymerization. The resulting polymers bear boron on the main chain, allowing the replacement of boron side chains with other elements through the cleavage of carbon–boron bonds in postpolymerization transformations. This strategy, based on "side-chain replacement," has enabled the synthesis of various polymers that were previously inaccessible.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers with both highly branched structures and numerous vinyl functional groups have been synthesized via reversible activation/deactivation controlled polymerization of multifunctional vinyl monomers. By controlling the competition between propagation and reversible termination using a deactivation enhanced method, the growth rate of polymer chains is decreased and the onset of gelation is prevented until the system has achieved much higher levels of conversion than has previously been reported for nonenhanced systems. Here, we demonstrate this strategy by synthesizing highly branched, irregular dendritic polymers with a multiplicity of reactive functionalities such as vinyl and halogen functional groups, and controlled chain structure via deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of a commercially available multifunctional vinyl monomer-divinylbenzene (DVB) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA).

Abstract:Vinyl-functionalized hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) have attracted much attraction because their pendant vinyl groups can be further modified for a required application. However, the syntheses of these polymers are difficult, because the cross-linking is inevitable during the polymerization reaction. The present work reports a new, facile, one-step strategy for the synthesis of vinyl-functionalized HBPs via the self-condensing anionic copolymerization of commercially available allyl methacrylate and hydroxyethyl methacrylate with a monomer conversion approaching 100% at room temperature. The hyperbranched structures were confirmed by triple-detection size exclusion chromatography. The pendent vinyl groups of the resulting polymer were successfully modified by a “thiol-ene” reaction. This method provides a facile approach for preparing vinyl-functionalized HBPs with excellent monomer conversions under mild conditions, and will be useful in materials chemistry.

Abstract:B-O bonds are effective for constructing self-healing polymers, because of their unique combination of high thermodynamic stability and kinetic tunability. However, it is still challenging to develop boron-containing polymers that show simultaneously high mechanical strength, good hydrolytic stability, and autonomous self-healing ability. Herein, we designed and synthesized a phenol compound with three hydroxyls, two of which form boronic ester with boronic acid while the other one can promote the dynamic exchange of B-O bonds. Taking advantage of the new boronic esters as the cross-linking sites, a series of strong and tough elastomers with outstanding self-healing capacities at room temperature were successfully fabricated. The new design concept provides a novel type of dynamic covalent boronic esters as the platform for synthesizing durable and functional self-healing materials. Moreover, phenol compounds with three hydroxyl groups are abundant in the natural product, tannic acid (TA), which can also form dynamic boronic esters with boronic acid and be used to derive polymers with excellent recyclability. Therefore, this new system might facilitate the commercialization of boron-based dynamic covalent polymers as viable alternatives to contemporary commodity thermosets.

Abstract:The development of recyclable polymer materials is the main method to deal with environmental pollution and resource waste. As one of the effective methods, dynamic covalent bonds can be introduced into polymer networks to realize the closed-loop recycling and utilization of materials. In this paper, we introduce a borate ester bond and anthracene functional groups into common poly-(vinyl alcohol) by adding 9-anthraceneboronic acid. The dynamic borate ester bond can be used to construct a dynamic covalent polymer network, and the water resistance of plastics can be improved by the hydrophobicity of anthracene, and anthracene can also be depolymerized and recycled by heating after photo-crosslinking. Due to the advantages of easy preparation, high mechanical strength and toughness, good water resistance, chemical durability, and easy recycling, poly-(vinyl alcohol) anthraceneboronic acid (PVA-ABA) is a promising composite material suitable for sustainable engineering applications to avoid environmental impact and waste of resources.

Abstract:Streoregular poly(vinyl alcohol) is hard to obtain because vinyl alcohol is unstable relative to its tautomer acetaldehyde, and the monomer precursor vinyl ester is poisonous to the coordination catalyst. Herein, the coordination polymerization of 2-vinyl-2,1-borazanaphthalene (BN2VN) is reported by the linked or unlinked half-sandwich ligands attached scandium precursors ((FluSiMe3 )Sc(CH2 SiMe3 )2 (THF) (THF = tetrahydrofuran, 1), (FluCH2 CH2 -NHC-R)Sc(CH2 SiMe3 )2 (THF) (R = mesityl 2, i Pr 3, Me 4), and (FluCH2 Py)Sc(CH2 SiMe3 )2 (5) for the first time. Among these precursors, complex 5 converts 600 equivalents of BN2VN into polymer within 5 min to reach an activity as high as 8.99 × 105 g molSc -1 h-1 . The resultant products show excellent syndiotacticity and melting temperatures above 300 °C, which can be transferred to syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) with 90% rr triad content by postpolymerization oxidation.

Abstract:In this article, borax was used as the prime agent, and the organic boron that cross-linked agent was synthesized using adding sodium tartrate. The synthesis response shapes were optimized using unmarried factor way. The temperature opposition and crosslinking time of the fracturing fluid were used as the appraisal standards to decide the organic boron. The cross-linking agent's optimal synthesis statuses were measured, and the chemical and forcible holdings of the fracturing fluid after cross-linking with the polyvinyl alcohol-based liquid were measured.

Abstract:Nowadays, organic boron-containing dyes have garnered considerable interest as efficient photocatalysts owing to their advantages including large molar absorption coefficients, minimal bandgaps, and easy excitation. Incorporating various boron-containing dyes into porous organic polymers effectively addresses the issue of small boron-containing molecules, which are difficult to separate and prone to photobleaching. Nevertheless, the integration of boron-containing dyes into vinylene-linked conjugated porous organic polymers (POPs) remains unexplored. This study reports the synthesis of two distinct vinylene-linked fully conjugated POPs by reacting difluoroboron β-diketonate complexes with reactive methyl groups and a carbazole-bearing aldehyde. The formation of effective D–A interaction between the difluoroboron complexes and the carbazole subunit enhances charge transport and separation, thereby improving photocatalytic efficiency. CTBA-B2, with a higher content of the difluoroboron complex, exhibits superior catalytic activity in both oxidation and reduction reactions, and is capable of efficiently catalyzing sulfide oxidations as well as dehalogenation reactions in green ethanol solvents.

With reactivity ratios of r(1) = 0.94 (VV-9) and r(2) = 0.96 (VAc), the copolymerization of VV-9 and VAc demonstrates an ideal azeotropic copolymerization. By simply adjusting the initial feed ratios, terpolymers of VV-9, VAc, and vinyl alcohol (PVVOH) with different compositions have been successfully prepared. As a proof-of-concept, their application as modifiers to improve the adhesive, hydrophilic, and oxygen barrier properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was evaluated. When the PVVOH with 40 wt % VV-9 units was blended with LDPE, the dispersed PVVOH phase formed microdomains with a size of about 1 mu m, and there was no observable two-phase structure. The water contact angles of the PVVOH/LDPE blends were reduced from 103.7 +/- 0.9 degrees to 51.1 +/- 1.3 degrees and retained after being soaked in water at ambient conditions for 30 days. PVVOH is also effective in improving the adhesion between LDPE and aluminum alloys. With the addition of 25 wt % PVVOH (20 wt % VV-9), the ultimate shear strength of the lap joint was effectively enhanced from 3.60 +/- 0.17 MPa (pristine LDPE) to 4.87 +/- 0.02 MPa. Furthermore, the addition of 20 wt % PVVOH reduced the oxygen transmission rates (OTR) of LDPE film from 145.3 to 52.2 cm(3)mmm(-2)day(-1)bar(-1).

Abstract:Boronic ester is a kind of well-known and active dynamic covalent bond. Yet preparing an even boronic ester crosslinked network from boronic acid containing polymers and diol containing polymers remains challenging because the reaction between boronic acid and diol is so fast that by now blocking boronic acid/diol (in the form of boronic ester) or special mixing procedures are required. In this work, a series of storage-stable and self-crosslinkable combinations of boronic acid (2%, 4% and 8%, in mol%) containing polymer latices and diol (2%, 4% and 8%, in mol%) containing polymer latices were achieved by simply mixing the two types of latex dispersions, without using any blocking agents or special mixing procedure. In the combined dispersions, water as the dispersion medium isolates boronic acids and diol groups, while the combined latices can undergo self-crosslinking via the encounters of boronic acid and diols during the latex film formation. Target synthetic products were confirmed by NMR, UV–vis absorption, FT-IR and Raman spectra. The combined latices have simultaneously ensured the even mixing, storage stability (60 °C for 1 month or room temperature for 6 months) and self-crosslinking (examined by DMA, Soxhlet extractions, up to 97% gel content). The method of respectively preparing and then combining the two types of latices is better in polymerization stability, toughness, and wettability, compared to the method of preparing crosslinked polymer with the comparable divinyl boronic ester crosslinker (1%, 2% and 4%, in mol%). With these advantages, the method of combining such highly reactive polymers by utilizing the features of latex systems is inspirational in the fields of colloid science and reactive polymers.
