Abstract:Materials capable of shape-morphing and/or fluorescence imaging have practical significances in the fields of anti-counterfeiting, information display, and information protection. However, it's challenging to realize these functions in hydrogels due to the poor mechanical properties and lack of tunable fluorescence. A tough hydrogel with good shape-memory ability and phototunable fluorescence is reported here, which affords reprogrammable shape designing and information encoding for dual-encryption. This hydrogel is prepared by incorporating donor–acceptor chromophore units into a poly(1-vinylimidazole-co-methacrylic acid) network, in which the dense intra- and interchain hydrogen bonds lead to desirable features including high stiffness, high toughness, and temperature-mediated shape-memory property. Additionally, the hydrogel shows photomediated tunable fluorescence through a unimer-to-dimer transformation of the chromophores. By combining photolithography and origami/kirigami designs, hydrogel sheets encoded with fluorescent patterns can deform into specific 3D configurations. The geometrically encrypted fluorescent information in the architected hydrogels is readable only after sequential shape recovery and UV light irradiation. As demonstrated by proof-of-concept experiments, both the fluorescent pattern and the 3D configuration are reprogrammable, facilitating repeated information protection and display. The design of tough hydrogels with rewritable fluorescent patterns and reconfigurable shapes should guide the future development of smart materials with improved security and wider applications in aqueous environments.

Abstract:A hydrogel‐based dual encryption platform with rewritable information is developed. The dual encryption is realized by combining fluorescent information and subsequent 2D‐to‐3D conversion. By utilizing simultaneous fluorescence quenching and shape recovery process of the pH‐responsive PSSA/PDEAEMA‐APA/Eu3+ hydrogel, concealed information is on‐demand decrypted. Since the carried information realize self‐erasure with prolong of decryption process, the platform can be reused. With the increasing emphasis on information security, reliable information encryption materials have been urgently desired. Here, a hydrogel‐based dual encryption platform with self‐erasure function is developed, which exhibits both high‐security level and possibility of reuse. Dual encryption of the hydrogel‐based platform is realized by elegantly combining 2D fluorescent information pre‐written/printed via competitive coordination with pH‐induced shape deformation of the PSSA/PDEAEMA‐APA/Eu3+ hydrogel. On‐demand decryption of the concealed information is realized by immersing the platform in solution of specific pH and exposed to 254 nm irradiation, which fully utilizes simultaneous shape recovery and fluorescence quenching of the hydrogel. With prolong of the immersion time, the carried information self‐erases permanently, which effectively prevents leakage of information to non‐recipient and further ensures information security. Thanks to the reversible pH‐responsive behaviors and repeatable self‐erasure ability, the hydrogel‐based dual encryption platform could recover to a 2D blank plane after decryption and self‐erasure, which is of great potential in high‐security information encryption.

Abstract:An organohydrogel with tunable fluorescence and shape memory behavior is constructed for improving the information security level. Owing to the temperature‐controlled crystallization of hydrophobic polymer chains as well as UV‐triggered unimer–dimer transition of anthracene moieties that accompanies fluorescent color change, thus dual encryption based on the organohydrogel can be achieved.As one of the severe global problems, counterfeiting information has brought a huge negative impact on every aspect of human society. Though various anticounterfeiting strategies, including fluorescent materials, are widely developed for dealing with the above problem, the information security level needs to be further improved due to sophisticated hacking techniques. In this study, an organohydrogel is designed by constructing interpenetrating organohydrogel networks, in which naphthalimide moieties (DEAN, green‐yellow emission) are introduced in hydrophilic poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) hydrogel network and anthracene units (blue emission) are copolymerized in hydrophobic polystearate methacrylate (PSMA) organogel network. Triggered by UV light of 365 nm, the unimer–dimer transition occurs and leads the fluorescent color of organohydrogel to change from blue to faint yellow, making secret information be stored with the assistance of photomasks. Furthermore, by combining crystallization‐induced shape memory performance, dual encryption can be achieved. This fluorescent organohydrogel provides a new idea for fabricating smart materials with the ability of encryption–decryption, which is of great significance in information security protection.

Abstract:Although fluorescent hydrogels have been gaining significant attention for their potential application in optical encryption owing to their smart responsiveness, their complex preparation processes have hindered their practical applications. This paper reports the fabrication of a multicolor-tunable fluorescent hydrogel, annotated as GA/ASA/Eu(PDA) 3 , from gelatin (GA) as the gel matrix in addition to 5-aminosalicylic acid (ASA) and a lanthanide complex (Eu(PDA) 3 , pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDA) was chosen as a ligand for sensitizing the luminescence of europium ions (Eu 3+ )) as the fluorescent centers. Upon UV light excitation, ASA emitted blue-green fluorescence, while Eu(PDA) 3 showed red fluorescence. The difference between the maximum excitation wavelengths of the fluorescent groups was approximately 100 nm. Therefore, the fluorescence color of the GA/ASA/Eu(PDA) 3 hydrogel could be changed to red, pink, white, light blue, or blue by simply altering either the concentrations of the fluorescent groups or the excitation light wavelengths. Furthermore, the prepared hydrogel was responsive to metal ions, and the energy transfer between PDA and Eu 3+ ions could be interrupted by Cu 2+ or Mn 2+ ions, thus resulting in quenching of the red fluorescence. Finally, the designed hydrogel successfully enabled storage encryption. The results of this study can help in the design and manufacturing of novel smart optical materials for advanced information encryption applications.

Abstract:Information encryption is essential for information security.However,constructing a collaborative multiple-information encryption systemwith elaborate design and intuitionistic displays is challenging.In recent years, owing to their wide applications in sensing, intelligentswitch, and information encryption, stimuli-responsive fluorescentmaterials have attracted the attention of scientists. Inspired bythe multi-component collaborative step-by-step strategy from biology,we designed and synthesized a collaborative "dual-step"stimuli-responsive fluorescent copolymer poly(NIPAm-co-1-vinylimidazole-co-Rh-2) (PNVRh-2) with high colorcontrast and good reversibility (>10 cycles) after treatment bymultiplestimuli. Using this strategy, we introduced rhodamine units with anacid-induced ring-opening effect and an electron-rich imidazole sidechain into poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm).By combining these components, the conventional one-step acid-inducedluminescence process was transformed into a dual-step luminescenceprocess triggered by acid and heat. The fluorescence rate and intensityof PNVRh-2 could be manipulated by adjusting the pH and temperature.Contactless thermoprinting and erasable imaging were achieved. Furthermore,the great potential of PNVRh-2 in programmatic temperature-controlledinformation display and information encryption was illustrated, whichoffers a perspective for designing and optimizing high-performanceinformation encryption materials.

Abstract:Abstract Information encryption platforms with reliable encryption performance, excellent mechanical performance, and high water retention capacity are highly desired. In this study, a tough double‐network hydrogel is designed using the first network of a polyion complex containing lanthanide complexes via one‐pot polymerization and the second network of a poly (N‐hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (PHEAA) obtained by deep eutectic solvent (DES)‐assisted introduction and subsequent photopolymerization. In this system, the pH‐induced shape memory function and pH‐/wavelength‐dependent fluorescence allow the use of the prepared hydrogel as a dual‐encryption platform. Owing to its high response reversibility, the hydrogel‐based platform exhibits both a high security level and the advantages of rewritability, reprogrammability, and reusability. Additionally, the excellent mechanical properties and water retention capacity owing to the solvent exchange process involving the low‐volatility solvent DES and the resulting introduction of the second network of PHEAA offer high practical application value for the hydrogel‐based dual encryption platform, demonstrating its potential for information security protection.

Abstract:The emergence of stimuli-responsive fluorescence anti-counterfeiting technology has garnered increasing attention in the era of intelligent internet. Smart fluorescent hydrogels combine the characteristics of luminous materials with the unique structure of hydrogels, offering the potential for dynamic reversible erasing and multi-tiered data encryption. In this work, a fluorescent hydrogel was constructed by zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 loaded with fluorescein and then mixed with polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and borax, which could be used for image hiding in visible light. The reversible bonds cross-linked fluorescent hydrogel was stretchable and self-healing with a three-dimensional network structure. The hydrogel presented bright green fluorescence under 365 nm UV light, which was quenched by adding copper ions. Meanwhile, the imprint of the hydrogel could be cleared by L-Cysteine and repeatedly recorded information many times. The alkali-induced shape memory capability was further utilized to achieve multi-tiered data encryption by deforming it to a 3D-specific shape through folding. The rewritable and multi-dimensional encrypted hydrogel is expected to improve data security and reduce resource consumption.

Abstract:Information encryption technologies are very important for security, health, commodity, and communications, etc. Novel information encryption mechanisms and materials are desired to achieve multi‐mode and re‐programmable encryption. Here, we demonstrate a supramolecular strategy to achieve multi‐modal, erasable, reprogrammable, and reusable information encryption by reversibly modulating fluorescence. A butyl‐naphthalimide with flexible ethylenediamine functionalized β‐cyclodextrin (N‐CD) is utilized as fluorescent responsive ink for printing or patterning information on polymer brushes with dangling adamantane group grafted on responsive hydrogels. The photoluminescent naphthalimide moiety is bonded to β‐CD and entrapped in the cavity. Its fluorescence is highly weakened in β‐CD cavity and recovers after being expelled from the cavity by a competing guest molecule to emit bright green photoluminescence under UV. Experiments and theoretical calculations suggest π‐π stacking and ICT as the primary mechanism for the naphthalimides assembly and fluorescence, which can be quenched through insertion of conjugated molecules and recover by removing the insert. Such reversible quenching and recovering are used to achieve repeated writing, erasing, and re‐writing of information. We further combine supramolecular recognition and hydrogel shape memory to achieve reversible dual‐encryption. Abstract:Here a novel strategy is reported to fabricate hydrogels with multi‐level information encryption/decryption functions through spatially programming the polymorphic crystal phases. Since the homocrystalline and stereocomplex crystal phases in hydrogels exhibit different solvent stabilities, the transparency and fluorescence of the programmed hydrogels can be regulated, which enable the unique multi‐level encryption/decryption processes. The growing urgence of information protection promotes continuously the development of information‐encryption technique. To date, hydrogels have become an emerging candidate for advanced information‐encryption materials, because of their unique stimulus responsiveness. However, current methods to design multi‐level information‐encrypted hydrogels usually need sophisticated chemistry or experimental setup. Herein, a novel strategy is reported to fabricate hydrogels with multi‐level information encryption/decryption functions through spatially programming the polymorphic crystal phases. As homocrystalline and stereocomplex crystal phases in fluorescent hydrogels have different solvent stabilities, the transparency and fluorescence of the hydrogels can be regulated, thereby enabling the multi‐level encryption/decryption processes. Moreover, the structural origins behind these processes are discussed. It is believe that this work will inspire future research on developing advanced information‐encryption materials upon programming the polymer crystal structure.

Abstract:With stimuli-responsive fluorescence and similar structure to extracellular matrix, smart fluorescent hydrogels are good candidate to encode data, especially in drug and food anti-counterfeiting. However, the development of these hydrogels in multistage information protection to achieve higher data security level is limited. Herein, multifunction smart fluorescent hydrogels were constructed and utilized to develop different multistage data encryption platforms. The hydrogels are a new type of fully physically cross-linked gelatin/metal complex associated poly(acrylamide-acrylate) double network gel. They displayed Fe3+ and H+-responsive fluorescence quenching, temperature or Fe3+-induced shape memory and self-healing properties. Combining the above abilities, several multistage data encryption platforms, from 2D to 3D data encryption, were designed. The results demonstrated a bright prospect for this smart fluorescent hydrogel in high security level anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:The development of information storage materials and techniques with enhanced security level is still great challenging. Herein, the luminescent hydrogels were facilely prepared by doping luminescent lan-thanide complexes into non-covalent cross-linked gelatin/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels. The acquired luminescent hydrogels exhibited reversible luminescent switching behavior upon HCl/NH3 and Fe3+/ EDTA(2)-stimuli, respectively. Remarkably, such reversible luminescent switching property of the hydrogels allows themselves as good candidates for rewritable information security storage. The written pat-terns were invisible under daylight, however can be clearly observed under UV light, suggesting their potential applications in information protection. Moreover, luminescent hydrogels with low toxicity possessed appealing shape memory and self-healing properties simultaneously. The combination of shape memory and self-healing properties with reversible luminescent switching property can access advanced information encryption effectively. Such encrypted information can only be decrypted by specific pre-designed procedures with multi-steps. Abstract:Fluorescent patterns showing the unique color change in response to external stimuli are of considerable interest for their applications in anti-counterfeiting. However, there is still a lack of intelligent fluorescent patterns with high-security levels, presenting a dynamic display of encrypted information. In this study, a fluorescent organohydrogel is fabricated through a two-step interpenetrating technique, leading to the co-existence of naphthalimide moieties (DEAN, green-yellow fluorescent monomer) contained Poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) hydrogel network and Polyoctadecyl methacrylate (PSMA) organogel network bearing spiropyran moieties (SPMA, photochromic monomer). Due to the unique heterogeneous networks, the fluorescence color goes through a continuous change from green to yellow to red via the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process with the extension of irradiation time. In addition, when H+ is introduced into the system, SP units exhibit transformation into the protonated merocyanine (MCH+) rather than merocyanine (MC) under UV light, which inhibits the FRET process. By selectively being treated with H+, the fluorescent organohydrogel can act as an effective platform for encrypting secret information, making them more difficult to forge.

Abstract:The development of hydrogels capable of emitting multicolor fluorescence presents a promising avenue for addressing concerns related to information leakage and distortion of sensitive data. The integration of multifactor-induced tunable fluorescence with a unique upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior in hydrogels significantly contributes to the development of multi-dimensional and multi-level information storage materials that can dynamically display information as well as offer a high level of security and protection for information. However, the fusion of these advantageous properties into hydrogels intended for information storage and display remains a considerable challenge. In this context, we introduce a novel three-dimensional (3D) fluorescent code-producing hydrogel array fabricated via vat photopolymerization (VP) 3D printing, a technique offers a sustainable and efficient approach. This array unites the desired properties, capable of sequentially revealing concealed information through two distinct steps: (i) a heat-induced phase transition, and (ii) multicolor fluorescence triggered by ultraviolet (UV)/temperature exposure under specific conditions (i.e., certain UV irradiation duration, heating time, and wavelength). The reversible transparency and reprogrammable fluorescence emission properties of these hydrogels are expected to significantly enhance the processes of information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. This advancement could potentially revolutionize the field of information security.

Abstract:Fluorescent polymeric hydrogels especially multicolor fluorescent polymeric hydrogels (MFPHs) have important applications in information storage, encryption, and encoding. MFPHs are generally prepared by incorporating multiple traditional fluorescent materials into hydrogels. In recent years, nontraditional luminescent polymers without any traditional π-conjugated chromophores have received increasing attention. Here, we report a novel type of nontraditional MFPHs prepared by in situ polymerization of acrylamide (AAm) in the presence of poly(itaconic acid) (PITAc). The hydrogen-bonded mechanically strong PAAm/PITAc hydrogels show strong intrinsic fluorescence, and the fluorescence emission is excitation-dependent and metal cation-responsive. More impressively, the hydrogels treated with metal cations also possess excitation-dependent fluorescence. We developed a multi-ion inkjet printing (MIIP) technique to print texts or designed patterns onto the hydrogel surface using different metal cation solutions as inks, and then variable texts or patterns appear under the irradiation of UV, violet, and blue lights. Patterns can be further changed by selective printing, erasing, or reprinting on some regions. Therefore, multidimensional information encryption is achieved. This work provides a new strategy for preparing MFPHs for wide applications.
A Multifunctional Hydrogel Platform Based on Synergistic Shape Deformation and Tunable Fluorescence for Soft Actuators and 3D Multistage Information Encryption

Abstract:This work presents a multifunctional hydrogel platform integrating shape deformation and tunable fluorescence for advanced information encryption and soft actuation, addressing poor mechanical performance and leakage risks in traditional 2D storage. The bilayer hydrogels combine a fluorescent layer composed of poly(methacrylamide-co-polyethylene glycol ether methacrylate-co-pyrenylmethyl acrylate) (P(MAM-co-PEGMA-co-PyMA)) with a second layer of poly(acrylamide-co-methacrylic acid) (P(AM-co-MAA)), featuring varied ratios of MAM:PEGMA and AM:MAA. These hydrogels exhibit robust mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 250 kPa, breaking elongation of 130 %, and toughness of 220 kJ/m(3). Anisotropic swelling enables rapid, reversible bending under alternating 25 degrees C and 70 degrees C, surpassing current bilayer hydrogel actuators with a maximum bending amplitude of 825 +/- 20 degrees and a rapid bending rate of 134 +/- 1.17 degrees/min at 25 degrees C in water. Furthermore, hydrogel-based five-arm grippers and jacks demonstrate swift actuation in response to temperature changes. A circuit switch is designed using the hydrogel bilayer to function as bidirectional circuit switches under external temperature stimuli. Various encryption methods, such as the "loading-encryption-decryption-erasing" cycle for 2D information encryption and 3D shape configurations, enhance information security, which becomes readable only after sequential shape recovery. This study extends 2D encryption to 3D with fast actuation, reversible bending, and multi-decryption capabilities for advanced anticounterfeiting applications.

Abstract:AbstractSmart fluorescent materials that can respond to environmental stimuli are of great importance in the fields of information encryption and anti‐counterfeiting. However, traditional fluorescent materials usually face problems such as lack of tunable fluorescence and insufficient surface‐adaptive adhesion, hindering their practical applications. Herein, inspired by the glowing sucker octopus, we present a novel strategy to fabricate a reversible fluorescent eutectogel with high transparency, adhesive and self‐healing performance for conformal information encryption and anti‐counterfeiting. Using anthracene as luminescent unit, the eutectogel exhibits photoswitchable fluorescence and can therefore be reversibly written/erased with patterns by non‐contact stimulation. Additionally, different from mechanically irreversible adhesion via glue, the eutectogel can adhere to various irregular substrates over a wide temperature range (−20 to 65 °C) and conformally deform more than 1000 times without peeling off. Furthermore, by exploiting surface‐adaptive adhesion, high transparency and good stretchability of the eutectogel, dual encryption can be achieved under UV and stretching conditions to further improve the security level. This study should provide a promising strategy for the future development of advanced intelligent anti‐counterfeiting materials.
Tough and Rapidly Stimuli-Responsive Luminescent Hydrogels for Multi-Dimensional Information Encryption and Storage

Abstract:In modern society, information leakage is a very important issue during our dairy life. Multi-dimensional information encryption and storage are effective ways to increase the security level. Herein, a serials of rapidly stimuli-responsive, tough fluorescent hydrogels have been fabricated by doping Ln(3+) ions (Ln = Eu, Tb, Eu/Tb) into poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide-co-potassium 6-acryl-amidopicolinate) (P(NAGA-co-K6APA)) hydrogel networks which are prepared by one-pot copolymerization. The dynamic lanthanide complexes could not only serve as photoluminescent emitters but also cross-linking points to provide additional strength to the hydrogel network. The tensile fracture stress and Young's modulus can reach up to 3.9 MPa and 0.66 MPa, respectively, comparable to previously reported tough hydrogels. Moreover, because of these dynamic lanthanide coordination bonds, the luminescent hydrogels showed very fast and reversible responsiveness via direct alternating exposure to acid and base without luminance fatigue for at least five cycles. Remarkably, time-dependent luminescence fading process of this dynamic lanthanide complexes provides these hydrogels to be applied in multi-dimensional information encryption and decryption.

Abstract:Color-tunable luminescent hydrogels have shown significant potential in smart display devices, data encryption and multilevel anti-counterfeiting due to their excellent flexibility, functional versatility and optical properties. However, developing hydrogels that exhibit prominent optical decryption capabilities while maintaining robust mechanical properties remains a challenge. Herein, we present an Al 3+ stimulus-triggered luminescent hydrogel with the integrated properties of wide multi-color tunability, self-healing capacity, high strength (160%) and an impressive toughness (180 kJ m −3 ). The double-network in the hydrogel with rich hydrogen bonds is well compatible with various luminophores. These include luminescent layered rare earth hydroxide nanosheets (LRH NSs) with red/green (R/G) emission and a chemosensor molecule that displays a fluorescence "turn-on" change in blue (B) emission only in the presence of Al 3+ as a stimulus. Consequently, this smart hybrid hydrogel not only provides an adjustable tool for tuning the visible color of soft materials based on orthogonal responsive R/G/B three-primary-color luminescence, but also acts as a specific key for enabling color-switchable anti-counterfeiting and information encryption/decryption. These unique optical properties of the luminescent soft material highlight its potential as a hydrogel-based functional platform for the development of intelligent and color-tunable cryptographic devices with low cost, facile synthesis, and good processability.

Abstract:Abstract The efficient collaboration of light tunability and intelligent deformation of fluorescent materials can create an advanced spatiotemporal cascade platform that enables multi‐level and multidimensional information storage and encryption. Here, cellulose‐based dynamic double‐network hydrogels with excitation‐dependent (Ex‐De) behavior are proposed. The mechanism of multi‐channel radiative relaxation and multiple excited state transition of the photoactive component 4′‐([2,2′:6′,2′′‐terpyridin]−4′‐yl)‐[1,1′‐biphenyl]−4‐carbaldehyde (TPy‐CHO) has been established, and a desirable regulation of excitation energy (wavelength, intensity) on the time scale for multi‐level encryption has been achieved. Notably, the dense hydrogen bonds and non‐covalent interactions in polymer networks not only enhance the Ex‐De behavior, but also provide excellent optical resolution and richer polychromic fluorescence. Even ideal cold white fluorescence is obtained through energy transfer between organic (TPy‐CHO) and inorganic (lanthanide ion) hybrid materials. Simultaneously, this unique network structure endows the hydrogel with temperature‐mediated self‐healing, controllable shape programming behavior and anti‐swelling ability, allowing to achieve dynamic multidimensional information encryption capability. The encoded information can reversibly emerge and disappear, allowing for instantaneous on‐demand decryption and intelligent re‐writability. As a result, a promising multi‐level and multidimensional synergistic anti‐counterfeiting mechanism is established through the cascade process of “spatial security‐ light trigger‐ fluorescence multilevel output‐temporal rewriting”.
