Abstract:Achieving effective control of thermal and mechanical distributions has been a long-standing goal, and metamaterials have emerged as a crucial tool for customizing functional structures to manipulate these physical fields. However, existing design paradigms do not apply to thermal-mechanical metamaterials that operate on thermal and mechanical fields simultaneously and independently. First, Due to the different geometric requirements imposed by the thermal and mechanical fields on the unit cells, there is a conflict between functional coupling and design coupling, which limits the design of thermal-mechanical metamaterials. Second, the fact that continuum mechanical equations do not remain invariant under general coordinate transformations hinders the application of conventional theories. Additionally, balancing minimal design costs, manufacturability, and optimal functionality remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose a global data-driven design method using Bayesian hyperparameter optimization. This method creates thermal-mechanical metamaterials from a large, pre-computed unit cell database. Our flexible method allows designing thermal-mechanical metamaterials with various functional combinations (e.g., cloaks, concentrators, and rotators) and shapes. Compared to traditional solutions, this approach balances manufacturability and functionality while offering unparalleled universality and low design costs. Experimental measurements validate the effectiveness of our method. Our approach can rapidly respond to new design scenarios and address design challenges related to the multi-physical effects.

Abstract:The field of biomaterials has experienced substantial evolution in recent years, driven by advancements in materials science and engineering. This has led to an expansion of the biomaterials definition to include biocompatibility, bioactivity, bioderived materials, and biological tissues. Consequently, the intended performance of biomaterials has shifted from a passive role wherein a biomaterial is merely accepted by the body to an active role wherein a biomaterial instructs its biological environment. In the future, the integration of bioinspired designs and dynamic behavior into fabrication technologies will revolutionize the field of biomaterials. This perspective presents the recent advances in the evolution of biomaterials in fabrication technologies and provides a brief insight into smart biomaterials.
Towards physical principles of biological evolution

Abstract:Biological systems reach organizational complexity that far exceeds the complexity of any known inanimate objects. Biological entities undoubtedly obey the laws of quantum physics and statistical mechanics. However, is modern physics sufficient to adequately describe, model and explain the evolution of biological complexity? Detailed parallels have been drawn between statistical thermodynamics and the population-genetic theory of biological evolution. Based on these parallels, we outline new perspectives on biological innovation and major transitions in evolution, and introduce a biological equivalent of thermodynamic potential that reflects the innovation propensity of an evolving population. Deep analogies have been suggested to also exist between the properties of biological entities and processes, and those of frustrated states in physics, such as glasses. Such systems are characterized by frustration whereby local state with minimal free energy conflict with the global minimum, resulting in 'emergent phenomena'. We extend such analogies by examining frustration-type phenomena, such as conflicts between different levels of selection, in biological evolution. These frustration effects appear to drive the evolution of biological complexity. We further address evolution in multidimensional fitness landscapes from the point of view of percolation theory and suggest that percolation at level above the critical threshold dictates the tree-like evolution of complex organisms. Taken together, these multiple connections between fundamental processes in physics and biology imply that construction of a meaningful physical theory of biological evolution might not be a futile effort. However, it is unrealistic to expect that such a theory can be created in one scoop; if it ever comes to being, this can only happen through integration of multiple physical models of evolutionary processes. Furthermore, the existing framework of theoretical physics is unlikely to suffice for adequate modeling of the biological level of complexity, and new developments within physics itself are likely to be required.

Integrating Evolutionary Biology into Physics Classroom: Scaling, Dimension, Form and Function

Abstract:Since Galileo and (more recently) D'Arcy Thompson, it has been understood that physical processes and constraints influence biological structures and their resulting functions. However these cross-discpline connections -- and their importance to growing scientific discplines such as biophysics -- are rarely tought in introductory physics courses. Here we examine how the laws of physics shape Darwinism evolution through the surface area to volume ratio, an important geometric measure of a structure. We develop conceptual cartoon clicker questions to enhance students' understanding of these interdisciplinary concepts. By connecting abstract physical laws with biological (and technological) applications, our approach aims to help students appreciate the deep connections between physical and biological sciences, thereby enriching the learning experience in introductory physics courses.

Abstract:Materials science is undergoing a revolution, generating valuable new materials such as flexible solar panels, biomaterials and printable tissues, new catalysts, polymers, and porous materials with unprecedented properties. However, the number of potentially accessible materials is immense. Artificial evolutionary methods such as genetic algorithms, which explore large, complex search spaces very efficiently, can be applied to the identification and optimization of novel materials more rapidly than by physical experiments alone. Machine learning models can augment experimental measurements of materials fitness to accelerate identification of useful and novel materials in vast materials composition or property spaces. This review discusses the problems of large materials spaces, the types of evolutionary algorithms employed to identify or optimize materials, and how materials can be represented mathematically as genomes, describes fitness landscapes and mutation operators commonly employed in materials evolution, and provides a comprehensive summary of published research on the use of evolutionary methods to generate new catalysts, phosphors, and a range of other materials. The review identifies the potential for evolutionary methods to revolutionize a wide range of manufacturing, medical, and materials based industries.

Abstract:A new theory and method of innovative product evolutionary design based on semantics unit was presented.The new theory and method was discussed with evolutionary principles of design concepts and process in integrated platform from viewpoint of innovation and reuse properties for creative product.Key technologies,such as product motion evolutionary design,assembly evolutionary design,structure evolutionary design and reuse evolutionary design,were researched in particular.Furthermore,the new method has been successfully applied in the modeling of some projects and has achieved positive responses in its utility,flexibility and robustness.Experiment results indicated that this method could help designers express product design information more naturally and accurately from high-level semantics layer,and it has realized the support for computer-aided innovative design.

Abstract:In the 50 years that succeeded Richard Feynman’s exposition of the idea that there is ‘plenty of room at the bottom’ for manipulating individual atoms for the synthesis and manufacturing processing of materials, the materials-by-design paradigm is being developed gradually through synergistic integration of experimental material synthesis and characterization with predictive computational modeling and optimization. This paper reviews how this paradigm creates the possibility to develop materials according to specific, rational designs from the molecular to the macroscopic scale. We discuss promising techniques in experimental small-scale material synthesis and large-scale fabrication methods to manipulate atomistic or macroscale structures, which can be designed by computational modeling. These include recombinant protein technology to produce peptides and proteins with tailored sequences encoded by recombinant DNA, self-assembly processes induced by conformational transition of proteins, additive manufacturing for designing complex structures, and qualitative and quantitative characterization of materials at different length scales. We describe important material characterization techniques using numerous methods of spectroscopy and microscopy. We detail numerous multi-scale computational modeling techniques that complements these experimental techniques: DFT at the atomistic scale; fully atomistic and coarse-grain molecular dynamics at the molecular to mesoscale; continuum modeling at the macroscale. Additionally, we present case studies that utilize experimental and computational approaches in an integrated manner to broaden our understanding of the properties of two-dimensional materials and materials based on silk and silk-elastin-like proteins.

Abstract:Evolution in time-varying environments naturally leads to adaptable biological systems that can easily switch functionalities. Advances in the synthesis of environmentally-responsive materials therefore open up the possibility of creating a wide range of synthetic materials which can also be trained for adaptability. We consider high-dimensional inverse problems for materials where any particular functionality can be realized by numerous equivalent choices of design parameters. By periodically switching targets in a given design algorithm, we can teach a material to perform incompatible functionalities with minimal changes in design parameters. We exhibit this learning strategy for adaptability in two simulated settings: elastic networks that are designed to switch deformation modes with minimal bond changes; and heteropolymers whose folding pathway selections are controlled by a minimal set of monomer affinities. The resulting designs can reveal physical principles, such as nucleation-controlled folding, that enable adaptability.

Abstract:The extraordinary properties of biological materials often result from their sophisticated hierarchical structures. Through multilevel and cross-scale structural designs, biological materials offset the weakness of their individual building blocks and enhance performance at multiple length scales to match the multifunctional needs of organisms. One essential merit of hierarchical structure is that it can optimize the interfacial features of the building blocks at different length scales, from the molecular level to the macroscale. Understanding the roles of biological material interfaces (BMIs) on the determination of properties and functions of biological materials has become a growing interdisciplinary research area in recent years. A pivotal aim of these studies is to use BMIs as inspiration for developing bioinspired and biomimetic materials and devices with advanced structures and functions. Given these considerations, this review aims to comprehensively discuss the structure-property-function relationships of BMIs in nature. We particularly focus on the discussion of BMIs and their inspired materials from mechanical and optical perspectives because these two directions are the most well-investigated and closely related. The challenges and directions of design and fabrication of BMI-inspired mechanical and optical materials are also discussed. This review is expected to garner interest from advanced material communities as well as environmental, nanotechnology, food processing, and engineering fields.

Abstract:Materials modelling and design using computational quantum and classical approaches is by now well established as an essential pillar in condensed matter physics, chemistry and materials science research, in addition to experiments and analytical theories. The past few decades have witnessed tremendous advances in methodology development and applications to understand and predict the ground-state, excited-state and dynamical properties of materials, ranging from molecules to nanoscopic/mesoscopic materials to bulk and reduced-dimensional systems. This issue of <i>Nature Materials</i> presents four in-depth Review Articles on the field. This Perspective aims to give a brief overview of the progress, as well as provide some comments on future challenges and opportunities. We envision that increasingly powerful and versatile computational approaches, coupled with new conceptual understandings and the growth of techniques such as machine learning, will play a guiding role in the future search and discovery of materials for science and technology.

Abstract:Life is characterized by a myriad of complex dynamic processes allowing organisms to grow, reproduce, and evolve. Physical approaches for describing systems out of thermodynamic equilibrium have been increasingly applied to living systems, which often exhibit phenomena unknown from those traditionally studied in physics. Spectacular advances in experimentation during the last decade or two, for example, in microscopy, single cell dynamics, in the reconstruction of sub- and multicellular systems outside of living organisms, or in high throughput data acquisition have yielded an unprecedented wealth of data about cell dynamics, genetic regulation, and organismal development. These data have motivated the development and refinement of concepts and tools to dissect the physical mechanisms underlying biological processes. Notably, the landscape and flux theory as well as active hydrodynamic gel theory have proven very useful in this endeavour. Together with concepts and tools developed in other areas of nonequilibrium physics, significant progresses have been made in unraveling the principles underlying efficient energy transport in photosynthesis, cellular regulatory networks, cellular movements and organization, embryonic development and cancer, neural network dynamics, population dynamics and ecology, as well as ageing, immune responses and evolution. Here, we review recent advances in nonequilibrium physics and survey their application to biological systems. We expect many of these results to be important cornerstones as the field continues to build our understanding of life.

Shaping dynamical folding and misfolding pathways in mechanical metamaterials

Abstract:The design of desired behaviors in mechanical metamaterials has produced remarkable advances but has generally neglected two aspects - the inevitable presence of undesired behaviors and the role of dynamics in avoiding such behaviors. Inspired by similar hurdles in molecular self-assembly and protein folding, we derive design principles to shape dynamical folding and misfolding pathways in disordered mechanical systems. We show that such pathways, i.e., sequences of states traversed at a finite rate, are determined by the bifurcation structure of configuration space which, in turn, can be tuned using imperfections such as stiff joints. We apply these ideas to completely eliminate the exponentially many ways of misfolding a self-folding sheet by making some creases stiffer than others. Our approach also shows how folding at different rates can controllably target different desired behaviors.

Abstract:Evolution is the fundamental physical process that gives rise to biological phenomena. Yet it is widely treated as a subset of population genetics, and thus its scope is artificially limited. As a result, the key issues of how rapidly evolution occurs, and its coupling to ecology have not been satisfactorily addressed and formulated. The lack of widespread appreciation for, and understanding of, the evolutionary process has arguably retarded the development of biology as a science, with disastrous consequences for its applications to medicine, ecology and the global environment. This review focuses on evolution as a problem in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, where the key dynamical modes are collective, as evidenced by the plethora of mobile genetic elements whose role in shaping evolution has been revealed by modern genomic surveys. We discuss how condensed matter physics concepts might provide a useful perspective in evolutionary biology, the conceptual failings of the modern evolutionary synthesis, the open-ended growth of complexity, and the quintessentially self-referential nature of evolutionary dynamics.

Designing Mechanical Meta-Materials by Learning Equivariant Flows

Abstract:Mechanical meta-materials are solids whose geometric structure results in exotic nonlinear behaviors that are not typically achievable via homogeneous materials. We show how to drastically expand the design space of a class of mechanical meta-materials known as cellular solids, by generalizing beyond translational symmetry. This is made possible by transforming a reference geometry according to a divergence free flow that is parameterized by a neural network and equivariant under the relevant symmetry group. We show how to construct flows equivariant to the space groups, despite the fact that these groups are not compact. Coupling this flow with a differentiable nonlinear mechanics simulator allows us to represent a much richer set of cellular solids than was previously possible. These materials can be optimized to exhibit desirable mechanical properties such as negative Poisson's ratios or to match target stress-strain curves. We validate these new designs in simulation and by fabricating real-world prototypes. We find that designs with higher-order symmetries can exhibit a wider range of behaviors.

Abstract:Computational materials design integrates targeted materials process–structure and structure–property models in systems frameworks to meet specific engineering needs. Design inherently consists of many competing requirements that require judicious decisions regarding key tradeoffs. The goal of computational materials design is to apply the best scientific understanding to facilitate decisions regarding the optimal tradeoffs that meet desired needs in the most time and resource efficient manner. Mechanistic materials design models require adequate fidelity to determine the favourability of one design solution over another but also the ability to be extrapolated over large parameter space to search for design optima in unexplored terrain. Design processes must not only efficiently find optimal solutions, but quickly identify failures. More broadly, materials design can only be as successful as the ability to identify the correct requirements for an application, and those requirements must address not only performance but also qualification hurdles including prediction of manufacturing variation.

Abstract:Significance Engineering at the nanoscale is rich and complex: researchers have designed small-scale structures ranging from smiley faces to intricate sensors. However, designing specific dynamical features within these structures has proven to be significantly harder than designing the structures themselves. Biology, on the other hand, demonstrates fine-tuned kinetic control at nearly all scales: viruses that form too quickly are rarely infectious, and proper embryonic development depends on the relative rate of tissue growth. Clearly, kinetic features are designable and critical for biological function. We demonstrate a method to control kinetic features of complex systems and apply it to two classic self-assembly systems. Studying and optimizing for kinetic features, rather than static structures, opens the door to a different approach to materials design.

Abstract:In the past few years, design of mechanical metamaterials has been empowered by computational tools that have allowed the community to overcome limitations of human intuition. By leveraging efficient optimization algorithms and computational physics models, it is now possible to explore vast design spaces, achieving new material functionalities with unprecedented performance. Here, we present our viewpoint on the state of the art of computational metamaterials design, discussing recent advances in topology optimization and machine learning design with respect to challenges in additive manufacturing.
Weak-formulated physics-informed modeling and optimization for heterogeneous digital materials

Abstract:Numerical solutions to partial differential equations (PDEs) are instrumental for material structural design where extensive data screening is needed. However, traditional numerical methods demand significant computational resources, highlighting the need for innovative optimization algorithms to streamline design exploration. Direct gradient-based optimization algorithms, while effective, rely on design initialization and require complex, problem-specific sensitivity derivations. The advent of machine learning offers a promising alternative to handling large parameter spaces. To further mitigate data dependency, researchers have developed physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to learn directly from PDEs. However, the intrinsic continuity requirement of PINNs restricts their application in structural mechanics problems, especially for composite materials. Our work addresses this discontinuity issue by substituting the PDE residual with a weak formulation in the physics-informed training process. The proposed approach is exemplified in modeling digital materials, which are mathematical representations of complex composites that possess extreme structural discontinuity. This article also introduces an interactive process that integrates physics-informed loss with design objectives, eliminating the need for pretrained surrogate models or analytical sensitivity derivations. The results demonstrate that our approach can preserve the physical accuracy in data-free material surrogate modeling but also accelerates the direct optimization process without model pretraining.

Abstract:The launching integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) and materials genome engineering (MGE) has led the transformation of empirical and theoretical design paradigm into the rational computational one that further provides the basis for the data-driven design paradigm by integrating the high-throughput techniques in experiments and computations, the big data science with general principles, the informatics with knowledge discovery based on data mining and machine learning, and ultimately enabling the possibility of materials intelligence design (MID) via artificial intelligence. In this perspective article, we highlight the intelligent solution to acquire the property-structure-process-performance relationship of multilevel-structured materials by emphasizing modularization, automation, standardization, integration and intelligence, following the hierarchical relationship of data, information, knowledge and wisdom, which is essentially different from the past empirical, theoretical and computational paradigms. The new era of MID is expected to fundamentally reform the material innovation mode through an integrated infrastructure guided by novel concepts that is radically distinguished from the way of thinking and doing in the past, providing a perspective scientific vision and direction for future materials design.
