Abstract:Gas leaks in pipeline networks are becoming a severe problem in the gas industry. Acoustic techniques have been shown to be effective in detecting and locating the gas leak. However, the majority of the studies were conducted and validated in a straight pipe or a simple pipeline network, its feasibility in a more complex pipeline network with structures such as bends, branches, and valves is less clear. The authors previously proposed an integrated method combining data-driven techniques with a model-based health indicator for leak detection, whose effectiveness was validated in a small pipe rig. This study serves to further investigate its per-formance in a more complex low-pressure pipeline network. A test rig that is capable of simu-lating various configurations was adapted from an existing gas pipeline network. Several machine learning models were employed for leak identification, and the effects of pipe bends, the pipe branch, and sensor locations were assessed. The findings suggest the proposed method achieves satisfactory results for leak detection in the complex low-pressure pipeline network and the ensemble methods generally outperform the others in this study. The trained models might be used to identify the gas leak using signals gathered at a different position, which is encouraging and promising for practical applications.
