Abstract:White light-emitting diodes provide widespread applications in lighting, electronic equipment, and high-tech displays. However, thermal quenching effect severely limits their practical application. Here, we developed an orange-red phosphor β-KMg(PO3)3:Mn2+, which emits bright orange-red light when excited by ultraviolet light without the energy transfer of sensitizer, owing to the strong crystal field provided by β-KMg(PO3)3 for Mn2+. The self-reduction of Mn4+ → Mn2+ and good thermal stability have been realized in an ambient atmosphere. The defect types were verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and cationic vacancy plays a significant role in the self-reduction of Mn4+ → Mn2+. Furthermore, the properties of the trap energy levels were studied by thermoluminescence. The recombination luminescence of the detrapped carriers released from the deep trap levels at high temperatures suppresses the luminescence loss of thermal quenching. Moreover, the trap energy levels play an important role in the mechanoluminescence of β-KMg(PO3)3:Mn2+. Abstract:Self-reduction behavior of doped activators and zero-thermal-quenching luminescence have received much more attention in the exploration of luminescent materials for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes. Here, a combination of the two properties is demonstrated in a Mn2+ activated red phosphor, NaZn(PO3)3:Mn2+, synthesized by a high temperature solid state reaction in ambient atmosphere, which is free from thermal quenching until 250 °C. By combined first-principles calculation and experimental investigation, the self-reduction mechanism from Mn4+ to Mn2+ and the anti-thermal quenching are clarified. The unique properties originate from the cation vacancy defects and the thermally induced energy transfer from the defect energy levels to the Mn2+ 3d excited state centers. This result will deepen the understanding of the effect of the crystal defect on luminescent materials, as well as inspiring more exploration on defect control to develop novel high thermal stability phosphors for practical application.

Abstract:Red phosphor is indispensable to achieve warm white light in the white light diode (WLED) application. However, the current red phosphors suffer from high cost and harsh synthesis conditions. In this study, an oxide-based rare-earth-free red-emitting phosphor Li3Mg2NbO6:Mn4+ (LMN:Mn4+) has been successfully synthesized by a simple solid-state reaction method. The relationship between crystal structure and luminescence was investigated in detail. The site occupancy of the doping Mn4+ ion in the LMN host has been discussed from the point of bond valence sum. How the coordination environment of doping Mn4+ affects the energy level of doping Mn4+ ion has been illustrated via the Tanabe-Sugano energy-level diagram. Moreover, warm white light has been obtained using LMN:Mn4+ as compensator to the YAG:Ce3+.
Monodisperse Micro-Spherical Sr2–Mg1+Y Al22–O36:xMn4+ Red Phosphors

Abstract:With narrow red photoluminescence (PL) bands, tetravalent Mn4+ doped phosphors show promising prospect in commercial application to effectively expand color gamut of phosphor converted LED displays. Here, we report a type of Sr-2-Mg-z(1)+yYzAl22-O-x(36):xMn(4+) phosphors with regular cage-like micro spherical morphologies. The micron size spherical precursors were synthesized with a propylene oxide (PO) driven fast sol-gel method. The cage-like spherical morphology is beneficial to efficiently trapping much incident light to enhance the PL of the phosphors. Being calcined at 1300 & nbsp;?, Sr2MgAl21.978O36:0.022Mn(4+) only exhibits the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 24.91%. With the Mg2+-Mn4+ codoping and Y3+/Sr2+ substituting strategies, to fulfill charge balance and produce John Teller distortion, IQE of Sr-2-Mg-z(1)+yYzAl22-O-x(36):xMn(4+) can be further improved up to 36.45%. The CIE color coordinates of Sr-2-Mg-z(1)+yYzAl22-O-x(36):xMn(4+) under near ultraviolet excitation can be stably fixed to (0.723, 0.227) at deep red region. It thus finds a potential application as pc-LED display with much broader color gamut than that of the NTSC standard. Therefore, Sr-2-Mg-z(1)+yYzAl22-O-x(36):xMn(4+) micron size spheres can be employed as promising red phosphors for high performance LED displays.(c) 2021 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of Chinese Society of Rare Earths.
Double perovskite La2LiNb(1-)O6: xMn4+ red phosphors with excellent humidity stability and high thermal stability for plant growth LEDs

Abstract:In recent times, there has been significant interest in Mn4+-activated red phosphors in double perovskite oxide materials. However, the practical use of these materials is hindered by concerns related to their thermal and humidity stability. In this research, we have synthesized deep red-emitting phosphors with the composition La2LiNb(1-x)O6: xMn4+ using a conventional high-temperature solid-phase method. The microstructures and luminescence properties of these phosphors have been thoroughly investigated. All the samples consist of irregular microcrystals with an average size ranging from 3 to 7 μm, and they exhibit excellent phase purity and crystallinity. Under excitation by 335 nm ultraviolet light, the La2LiNb(1-x)O6:xMn4+ phosphors emit a narrow and sharp red band (centered at ∼710 nm), and the emission intensity initially increases and then decreases with increasing Mn4+-doping concentration, peaking at x = 0.5%. The La2LiNb0.995O6: 0.5%Mn4+ phosphor exhibits exceptional thermal stability, with a normalized emission intensity of 66.24% maintained at 150 °C. More importantly, the La2LiNb0.995O6:0.5%Mn4+ phosphor exhibits excellent humidity stability and can maintain more than 90% of its initial emission intensity after immersion in deionized water for 24 h. The La2LiNb0.995O6: 0.5%Mn4+ phosphor demonstrates an impressive resistance to humidity-induced luminescence quenching. It maintains a significantly higher far-red emission intensity at relative humidities exceeding 65%. These newly developed La2LiNb(1-x)O6: xMn4+ phosphors hold great potential as red phosphors for high-power plant growth LEDs in extended outdoor, high-humidity conditions.

Abstract:A novel Mn2+ doped Li2CdSiO4 phosphors were synthesized in 1100°C without reducing atmosphere. Their structure, self-reduction mechanism and luminescence properties were evaluated. Oxygen vacancies were confirmed to exist in Li2CdSiO4 by electron spin-resonance spectroscopy and bond volume polarizability of Li2CdSiO4 was calculated to prove the lattice oxygen (O3) may easily form oxygen defect (Vo•). After different valence Mn source (MnO2 and MnCO3) as raw materials were built into Li2CdSiO4, similar emission bands with a maximal value of 515nm appeared under 226nm excitation and it was ascribed that energy transfer occurred from host to Mn2+ ions. Meanwhile, it was demonstrated that a series of redox reactions does happen from MnCO3 to Mn3O4 with increasing calcination temperature. Eventually, Mn3+ (Mn3O4) ions were reduced to Mn2+ through electron transfer from Vo• to Mn3+. Furthermore, interstitials oxygen (Oi) was detected in Li2CdSiO4:0.02Mn sample through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the special tunnel structure may provide a suitable position to stabilize Oi in air. Direct spectroscopic evidence and the assumed mechanism have been presented for explaining these processes. This research provides a new perspective for defects induced Mn2+ emission in designing broad band green phosphors. More importantly, the present work further deepens the understanding of the self-reduction mechanism of Mn2+.
Structural confinement-induced highly efficient deep-red emission and negative thermal quenching performance in Mn4+-activated Ca7Mg2Ga6−yAlyO18:Mn4+ phosphors

Abstract:High quantum efficiency (QE) and thermally stable emission are indispensable for the application of phosphors. Owing to the strong coupling between the lattice and naked d-orbitals of Mn 4+ , Mn 4+ -activated oxide red-emitting phosphors usually exhibit a low QE and serious thermal quenching (TQ), which strictly inhibit their prospective application. Herein, we rationally designed a novel phosphor series Ca 7 Mg 2 Ga 6− y Al y O 18 :0.02Mn 4+ (CMGA y O:Mn 4+ , 0 ≤ y ≤ 1.5), which adopts a high structural symmetry of the space group F 432. Highly efficient and thermally stable deep-red emissions ( λ em = 721 nm) were achieved simultaneously by structurally confining the Mn 4+ -emitting centres at the isolated octahedrally coordinated sites. Specifically, the highest internal and external quantum efficiencies of 90.2 and 75.9%, respectively, were obtained for CMGA 1.5 O:Mn 4+ due to Al 3+ -alloying-induced local structure modification and suppression of non-radiative transitions. Excellent thermal stabilities of 99, 102.2, and 87.9% of room-temperature photoluminescence intensities were retained at 423 K for CMGA y O:Mn 4+ with y = 0, 0.5, and 1.5, respectively. CMGA 0.5 O:Mn 4+ exhibits an abnormal negative TQ behaviour over the measured temperature range (298–473 K), which is attributed to the energy gain via the electron–phonon interactions of the isolated MnO 6 octahedra. Moreover, in situ high-pressure emission spectra of CMGO:0.02Mn 4+ showed that the emission position is highly sensitive to the external pressure with redshift coefficients of 2.8(2) and 1.16(4) nm GPa −1 in different pressure regions. These excellent photoluminescence properties of CMGA y O:Mn 4+ phosphors signify their great application potential in red LEDs and optical pressure sensors. The findings of this work have paved an avenue for the design of high-performance Mn 4+ -activated phosphors.

Abstract:Oxide matrix red-emitting phosphors are deemed as excellent color converters for white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) and laser diodes (LDs). Manganese-doped MgAl 2 O 4 powder was synthesized by a solid-state reaction method at different sintering temperatures. Microstructure shows that grain size is mainly in the range of 0.2–5 μm, and grain agglomeration occurs with increased sintering temperature. XPS analysis indicates that the doped Mn ion exhibits a valence state of + 4 within the MgAl 2 O 4 matrix. The diffraction peak of the phosphors is shifted by the sintering temperature, which affects lattice constant. Upon excitation by 300 nm ultraviolet light, the samples emit asymmetric broadband red light within the range of 620–720 nm, attributed to Mn 4+ ion's transition from 2 E g to 4 A 2g states. With the increasing temperature, the main emission peak shifts from 677 nm to 650 nm, ascribed to the change in energy level ( 2 E g ) resulting from the reduction of Al 2 O 3 phase. Crystal field theory confirmed that Mn 4+ ions are within a strong crystal field environment created by MgAl 2 O 4 matrix. By affecting particle size and crystallinity, the sintering temperature influences the fluorescence lifetime of the Mn 4+ ion. Notably, these red-emitting phosphors exhibits remarkable thermal stability as their emission intensity remains approximately at 58% of initial intensity even at elevated temperature (435 K). Consequently, Mn 4+ : MgAl 2 O 4 red-emitting phosphors with high thermal stability render them promising candidates for WLED applications.

Abstract:Nowadays, red phosphor plays a key role in improving the lighting quality and color rendering index of phosphor‐converted white light emitting diodes (w‐LEDs). However, the development of thermally stable and highly efficient red phosphor is still a pivotal challenge. Herein, a new strategy to design antithermal‐quenching red emission in Eu3+, Mn4+‐codoped phosphors is proposed. The photoluminescence intensity of Mg3Y2(1−y)Ge3O12:yEu3+, Mn4+ (0 ≤ y ≤ 1) phosphors continuously enhances with rising temperature from 298 to 523 K based on Eu3+ → Mn4+ energy transfer. For Mg3Eu2Ge3O12:Mn4+ sample, the integrated intensity at 523 K remarkably reaches 120% of that at 298 K. Interestingly, through codoping Eu3+ and Mn4+ in Mg3Y2Ge3O12, the photoluminescence color is controllably tuned from orangish‐red (610 nm) to deep‐red (660 nm) light by changing Eu3+ concentration. The fabricated w‐LEDs exhibit superior warm white light with low corrected color temperature (CCT = 4848 K) and high color rendering index (Ra = 96.2), indicating the promising red component for w‐LED applications. Based on the abnormal increase in antistokes peaks of Mn4+ with temperatures, Mg3Eu2Ge3O12:Mn4+ phosphor also presents a potential application in optical thermometry sensors. This work initiates a new insight to construct thermally stable and spectra‐tunable red phosphors for various optical applications.

Controllable luminescence and efficient energy transfer investigation of a novel white light emission phosphor Ca19Na2Mg(PO4)14: Dy3+, Tm3+ with high thermal stability

Abstract:White light emission phosphors are widely researched for application in lighting and display fields. However, the poor thermal stability is a real problem for the known single-phased white phosphors, which limits their further application. In this paper, Ca19Na2Mg(PO4)14: xDy3+, yTm3+ (CNMP, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.06, y = 0, 0.01) phosphors with adjustable emission and good thermal stability are synthesized. The X-ray diffraction and X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer measurement distinctly confirm the successful synthesis of CNMP: xDy3+, yTm3+ (CNMP, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.06, y = 0, 0.01). The photoluminescence results reveal that CNMP: Dy3+ shows characteristic excitation peaks in the range of 350-450 nm, and mainly exhibits strong yellow emission around 575 nm ascribed to the 4F9/2-6H13/2 transitions of Dy3+. To compensate the deficiency of blue light emission of CNMP: Dy3+, the trivalent Tm3+ ion is co-doped owing to its characteristic blue emission at 450 nm due to its 1D2-3F4 transitions. Therefore, the emission of CNMP: Dy3+, Tm3+ can be tuned from blue light region with CIE coordinates of (0.1649, 0.0387) to white light region with CIE coordinates of (0.3001, 0.3003) and finally move to yellow light region with CIE coordinates of (0.3732, 0.4493) through adjusting the doping ratio of Dy3+/Tm3+. The energy transfer efficiency and the energy transfer mechanism from Tm3+ to Dy3+ are further investigated. Moreover, CNMP: Dy3+, Tm3+ exhibites a high thermal stability and the emission intensity still keeps 84% of the initial intensity of Dy3+ at 230 °C. These outstanding properties show that Ca19Na2Mg(PO4)14: Dy3+, Tm3+ have great advantages and potentiality for applying in solid state lighting.

Abstract:The olivine‐type phase NaMgPO4:Eu2+ is prepared by solid state reaction method. The phase transition temperature of the phosphor is reduced by adding Zn2+, so that the olivine‐type phase NMP:Eu2+ can be stabilized at a lower temperature. It is known that high‐temperature phase (olivine structure) of NaMgPO4:Eu2+ (NMP:Eu2+) is a precious oxide phosphor suitable for LED devices, emitting red at 625 nm under blue excitation. However, mainly due to the stable glaserite structure in the wide range of low temperature, pure olivine‐phase NMP:Eu2+ is obtained only by using melt‐quenching and arc‐imaging furnace so far, which is inconvenient for the purpose of mass‐production or industry. Generally, a traditional solid‐state method is simpler and pollution‐free, which is more favorable in phosphor‐industry. Here, it is found that when quite small amount of Zn2+ is substituted for NMP:Eu2+ in solid‐state method, the purity of olivine phase is much improved and the luminescence intensity is significantly improved. For the Na(Mg,Zn)PO4:Eu2+ having new composition, crystal structure, optical properties, and color properties are investigated. The phase transition temperature before and after doping with Zn2+ are calculated by combining TG/DSC experimental measurements and first‐principles calculations. In addition, other characteristics related to the phosphor, such as structure, morphology, luminescence lifetime, thermal quenching properties, and quantum efficiency, are also studied in detail. Finally, it is demonstrated that this phosphor can be utilized in various applications through the manufacturing of LED devices, fluorescent pigments, and plant growth.

Abstract:Polyhedral anions have been used as supporting host structure to improve the luminescent properties of phosphors. However, the underlying mechanism for improving the thermal stability of luminescence by anion modification is rarely studied. In this paper, it was reported for the first time that thermal quenching and luminescent properties of red-emitting phosphors, Na2-n Y(MoO4)1+n (PO4)1-n :Tb3+,Eu3+, can be adjusted by the ratio of acid radicals. Rietveld refinements and Debye temperature calculations show that the subtle replacement of [MoO4]2– by [PO4]3– results in the shrinkage of the crystal lattice and an improvement in lattice rigidity of the host, but does not change the crystal type. A detailed explanation of the mechanism for adjustable thermal stability of luminescence is provided via temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction, Raman, formation energy, and work function. The strategy of anion modification reveals an effective method for improving the thermal stability and tuning the luminescent spectra of phosphors, it also sheds light on the development of new phosphors. Furthermore, Na1.4Tb0.5(MoO4)1.6(PO4)0.4:0.5Eu3+ red-emitting phosphor with an internal quantum efficiency of 66.67% can be efficiently excited with blue light (465 nm) and the integrated intensity at 425 K is 86.4% of that at 300 K. The controllable local structure-dependent luminescence makes this novel red-emitting phosphor attractive for both blue and near-UV chips based WLEDs.

Abstract:A series of tricolor-emitting fifillowite-structured Eu2+/Tb3+/Mn2+-doped Na3SrMg11(PO4)9 (NSMP) phosphors were synthesized. Its structural parameter, luminescent properties, and energy transfer behaviors were systematically studied. The optimal NSMP: Eu2+, Tb3+/Mn2+ phosphors exhibit bright RGB emission bands, i.e. blue emission from Eu2+, while green and red emission from sensitized Tb3+ and Mn2+, respectively. Eu2+-Tb3+/Mn2+ energy transfer processes are verified as a resonant type with ET efficiency of>80%. The emitting colors of NSMP: Eu2+, Tb3+, Mn2+ phosphors could be adjusted from blue (0.156, 0.077) to green (0.322, 0.552), to red (0.667, 0.299) by increasing Tb3+/Mn2+ doping content. The internal quantum efficiency of blue NSMP:0.04Eu2+, green NSMP:0.04Eu2+, 0.40Tb3+ and red NSMP:0.04Eu2+, 1.40Mn2+ phosphor is estimated at 64.46%, 78.17% and 78.03%, respectively. A significant leap of emission thermal-stability is found in Na3SrMg11(PO4)9: Eu2+ after co-activation with Mn2+/Tb3+ ions. In general, the emitting colors and energy transfer could be effectively regulated in the Na3SrMg11(PO4)9 host, and a general method for photoluminescence tuning is demonstrated.

Abstract:Nowadays, Mn4+-activated fluoride red phosphors with high color purity, strong zero phonon line emission and relatively short decay time are crucial for improving the optical performance of WLED and emerging applications. In this work, a series of red-emitting Mn4+-activated fluoride phosphors in consideration of the non-equivalent substitution of Mn4+ for Ga3+ in the Na3GaF6 host are synthesized via the coprecipitation method at room temperature. The use of different reaction solvents successfully regulates the morphology, size and luminescence intensity of the phosphor. Under blue light excitation, Na3GaF6:Mn4+ sample shows a bright narrow-band red emission with exceptional correlated color temperature (4029 K). Moreover, the emission of strong zero phonon line induces the outstanding color purity of red light (93%). In addition, the critical concentration of Mn4+ is determined to be 0.04 and the concentration quenching mechanism is also systematically discussed. Noticeably, when Na3GaF6:Mn4+ phosphor achieves maximum fluorescence emission, its fluorescence lifetime value is only 3.48 ms. Additionally, the theoretical calculated results demonstrate that Na3GaF6 host can provide strong crystal field strength for Mn4+, and the Racah parameters (B and C) and nephelauxetic ratio (β 1) are used to evaluate the nephelauxetic effect of Mn4+, which is compared with other types of Mn4+-activated phosphors. The activation energy, chromaticity shift and chromaticity coordinate variation are systematically calculated to analyze the thermal stability of Na3GaF6:Mn4+ red phosphor. Meanwhile, by employing the as-prepared phosphor Na3GaF6:Mn4+ as a red component, a high-performance warm WLED shows a full spectrum emission, and the corresponding cold white light emission is also transformed into the warm white light emission (CCT = 4224 K, Ra = 89.1 and LE = 111.72 lm/W). Moreover, under high driving current, such WLED exhibits stable output light efficiency. These results suggest that Na3GaF6:Mn4+ as red phosphor has a stupendous potential for warm WLED in indoor lighting.

Abstract:Mn2+‐activated phosphors usually show green to red luminescence depending on the crystal field strength in the lattice. However, the severe intensity loss of Mn2+ luminescence at elevated temperatures remains to be a serious problem. Here, the observation of zero‐thermal quenching of Mn2+ red luminescence (λem = 620 nm) up to 500 K in Eu2+, Mn2+‐codoped BaMgP2O7 is reported. This phenomenon arises from an efficient energy transfer from sensitizers Eu2+ which, when singly doped, exhibits a substantial thermal‐induced enhancement of 5d→4f emission intensity at 400 nm, along with a high luminescence efficiency and a large UV light absorption capacity. The present results open up a new path to the exploration of Eu2+, Mn2+‐codoped materials for thermally stable red phosphors.
Thermal-stable blue-red dual-emitting Na2Mg2Si6O15: Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphor for plant growth lighting

Abstract:Dual-emitting alkaline silicate phosphors Na2Mg2Si6O15: Eu2+, Mn2+ have been synthesized to realize blue and red emissions to boost photosynthesis process. At UV excitation, Na2Mg2Si6O15: Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphors exhibit efficient blue and red emissions due to Eu2+ 4f-5d transition and Mn2+ 3d-3d transition, which matches well with the absorption of plant chlorophylls, and also could be excited by near ultraviolet LED chip. The emitting color could be readily tuned from blue through pink to red due to effective Eu2+-Mn2+ energy transfer by changing Eu2+/Mn2+ ratio. And the corresponding energy transfer mechanism is found to be dipole-dipole interaction. The thermal stability of Na2Mg2Si6O15: Eu2+, Mn2+ is significantly higher than that of most reported Eu2+, Mn2+ co-activated dual-emitting phosphors, due to thermally activated defect-Eu2+-Mn2+ energy transfer process. Thus, it indicates that Na2Mg2Si6O15: Eu2+, Mn2+ is of great potential as converted phosphors for plant growth application.

Abstract:Red inorganic phosphors are widely utilized in the field of artificial plant supplemental lighting. Nevertheless, their red light emission falls short of satisfying the plant's dual requirements for both deep-red and far-red light simultaneously. In this work, multiple red emission Sm3+ and Sm3+-Mn4+ activated CaGdMgNbO6 (CGMNO) red phosphors were prepared by high-temperature solid-state reaction. The luminescence characteristics, thermal stability, energy transfer behaviour and optical temperature sensing properties were investigated. The 550–750 nm emission bands of CGMNO:Sm3+ and CGMNO:Sm3+, Mn4+ matched the absorption band of the plant. The inhibition of energy transfer between activated ions and the structural reconstruction of conduction band traps reveal the anomalous thermal quenching behavior of Sm3+ ions at high temperatures. These results show that Sm3+-Mn4+ co-activated CGMNO phosphors have potential applications in plant growth.

Abstract:Within Mn-activated phosphors, the oxidation state of Mn dopant strongly depends on the structural features of the host lattice. This paper reported a new polymorph of CsMg(PO3)3 (CMP) with a complicated three-dimensional (3D) framework of [Mg(PO3)3]∞ that is constructed by MgO6 octahedra and 1D infinite [PO3]∞ chains. Then we prepared a series of red phosphors CsMg1-x(PO3)3:xMn2+ (CMP:xMn2+) by high temperature solid state reactions in the open air. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and photoluminescence (PL) studies revealed the single Mn2+-oxidation. Under 404 nm light exciting, CMP:0.2Mn2+ can emit single-band emission at around 630 nm with full-width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 70 nm. Besides, CMP:0.2Mn2+ possesses excellent thermostability up to 450 K. These features indicate that CMP:0.2Mn2+ is suitable to be used for LED backlight display. Moreover, this work suggests that a host lattice with suitable structure feature can form single Mn2+-oxidation and is rigid enough to protect Mn2+ from being oxidized by O2 at high temperature.
