Abstract:With the development of location-based services, online car-hailing has become a new travel choice for more and more people, which undoubtedly has significant impact on traditional offline taxi-based travel. Online car-hailing differs from traditional taxis in various aspects, such as operating mechanism and pricing policy. Understanding the spatial variations in the ridership of these two travel modes and investigating the influencing mechanism of associated factors on offline taxi and online car-hailing ridership will be beneficial for urban traffic management. However, few studies have compared the spatial variation of human mobility between offline taxis and online car-hailing. In this study, ridership patterns were obtained from online car-hailing order data provided by DiDi Company and traditional taxi GPS data, and the differences and associations with several related variables were explored. Geographically weighted regression (GWR) analysis was used to model the spatial heterogeneity in online car-hailing and taxi ridership and their associations with six variables closely related to DiDi and taxi ridership, including house price, public and residential land use, road density, high-rise building density, and metro accessibility. A case study was conducted in Chengdu, China. The results showed that, the impact of the six variables on online car-hailing and traditional taxis varied depending on their spatial contexts, with some effects being spatially positive or negative. The observed differences and associations in this study may provide experimental evidence useful for targeted and feasible transportation policy-making.
