Abstract:Structure of the spin-orbit coupling varies from material to material and thus finding the correct spin-orbit coupling structure is an important step towards advanced spintronic applications. We show theoretically that the curvature in a carbon nanotube generates two types of the spin-orbit coupling, one of which was not recognized before. In addition to the topological phase-related contribution of the spin-orbit coupling, which appears in the off-diagonal part of the effective Dirac Hamiltonian of carbon nanotubes, there is another contribution that appears in the diagonal part. The existence of the diagonal term can modify spin-orbit coupling effects qualitatively, an example of which is the electron-hole asymmetric spin splitting observed recently, and generate four qualitatively different behavior of energy level dependence on parallel magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the diagonal term applies to a curved graphene as well. This result should be valuable for spintronic applications of graphitic materials.

Theoretical studies of high-harmonic generation: Effects of symmetry, degeneracy and orientation

Abstract:Using a quantum mechanical three-step model we present numerical calculations on the high-harmonic generation from four polyatomic molecules. Ethylene (C$_2$H$_4$) serves as an example where orbital symmetry directly affects the harmonic yield. We treat the case of methane (CH$_4$) to address the high-harmonic generation resulting from a molecule with degenerate orbitals. To this end we illustrate how the single orbital contributions show up in the total high-harmonic signal. This example illustrates the importance of adding coherently amplitude contributions from the individual degenerate orbitals. Finally, we study the high-harmonic generation from propane (C$_3$H$_8$) and butane (C$_4$H$_{10}$). These two molecules, being extended and far from spherical in structure, produce harmonics with non-trivial orientational dependencies. In particular, propane can be oriented so that very high-frequency harmonics are favorized, and thus the molecule contains prospects for the generation of UV attosecond pulses.

Abstract:Based on the hybrid orbital theory of Pauling, Haddon developed the π-orbital axis vector (POAV) analysis for treating the hybridization and the orientation of π orbitals in nonplanar conjugated organic systems. He programmed the calculation, giving numerical results for fullerenes. Recently, Chen Qiong et al. also constructed hybrid orbitals of C_(60) and C_(70), but the assumed orientation of π-hybrid orbitals seems to be not quite realistic. In this note, we made an analysis on POAV, construct the hybrid orbitals and determine the orientation of π-hybrid orbitals in C_(60) and C_(70) in analytical and numerical forms, respectively.

Abstract:We study the modifications on the ground and excited state properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), induced by the variation of concavity and $\pi$-connectivity. Inspired by experimentally feasible systems, we study three series of PAHs, from H-saturated graphene flakes to geodesic buckybowls, related to the formation of fullerene C60 and C50-carbon nanotube caps. Working within the framework of quantum chemistry semi-empirical methods AM1 and ZINDO/S, we find that the interplay between concavity and \pi-connectivity shifts the bright optical lines to higher energies, and introduces symmetry-forbidden dark excitations at low energy. A generally good agreement with the available experimental data supports our results, which can be viewed as the basis for designing optical properties of novel curved aromatic molecules.

Abstract:Effects of molecular orientational disorder on. the electronic structure of K3C60 are studied using a tight-binding model in which both the 2s and 2p orbitals of C atoms are taken into account. Nearly free of the cut-off distance of the interculster interaction and the form of the distance dependence of the hopping parameters, the orientational disorder always smears out the structure in the conduction-band density of states (DOS), while the value of the DOS at the Fermi level (N (EF)) changes slightly upon disordering. These results are in excellent agreement with the earlier ones based on the single molecular orbital approximation.

Abstract:The molecular orbits of CO are rearranged under the strong influence of coadsorbed Cs atoms.The peak for CO on clean Ru(1010) surface,at 7.5eV BE attributed to the 5σ and 1π orbits,is split into two peaks with one at 6.3eV BE and the other at 7.8eV BE.The former peak shows an anti-symmetry character about the plane parallel to the crystallographic direction in the surface.

Abstract:The comparison of the electronic structures of fcc C60 solids between two different molecular orientations as been done by performing a band structure calculation. We have found that the molecular orientation causes considerable changes on the degeneracies at GAMMA points, the dispersion of bands and the location of valence band maximum and conduction band minimum. The band variation upon molecular orientation should become an important subject in physics and materials science of the new class of solid fullerenes.

Abstract:The conduction-band electronic structure of the simple-cubic (sc) Na2CsC60 in different molecular orientational states is studied with a tight-binding model in which both the radially directed C-pπ orbital and tangentially directed C-σ orbital are considered. The obtained results are basically in agreement with the previous ones induced by the radially directed C-pπ orbital approximation. This implies that the conduction-band electronic structure of Na2CsC60 is dominated by the radially directed C-pπ orbital. Both the valence and conduction band of the body-centered-cubic (bcc) K6C60 obtained from this tight-binding model are also comparable to the existing ab initio ones.

Abstract:Using the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the sum-over-state (SOS) method, we have calculated the third-order nonlinear polarizability gamma and their dispersion spectra for C-78 fullerene isomers. Our numerical calculation results indicate that both symmetry and shape of the five C-78 isomers have great effect on their nonlinear optical properties.

Abstract:Para substituent effects on the stabilities of CC, CN, and NN bonds are studied with B3LYP/6-311++g(2d,2p)//B3LYP/6-31g(d) method, which reveals a particular substituent effect that completely differs from the conventional Hammett type of induction/field or resonance effect. Analogous substituent effect has only been observed with carbon radicals, where it is called the spin-delocalization effect. However, as no spin is involved in the present systems, nonpolar π electron delocalization instead of any radical effect is proposed to explain of the observed behaviors. Further analyses show that the nonpolar π electron delocalization effect can only be clearly exhibited by the conjugation systems where the polar resonance effect is not significant, which implies the difficulty to observe such an effect. Nevertheless, dual-parameter regressions can clearly show the general existence of the nonpolar π electron delocalization effect.

Abstract:Although the unique cyclo[18]carbon (C18) realized by recent experiments has been greatly concerned, it has so far remained elusive. In contrast, its precursors C18-(CO)n (n = 6, 4, and 2), which can be separated stably, are of more practical significance. In this paper, the bonding character, electron delocalization, and aromaticity of the C18-(CO)n (n = 6, 4, and 2) with out-of-plane and in-plane dual π systems (πout and πin) perpendicular to each other are studied by combining quantum chemical calculations and wavefunction analyses. These cyclocarbon oxides exhibit alternating long and short C-C bonds and extensive electron delocalization, and a significant diatropic induced ring current under the action of external magnetic field is therefore observed, which reveals the aromatic characteristic in the molecules. The global electron delocalization and significant influence of the number of intramolecular carbonyl (-CO) on the two sets of π conjugated systems have been focused on, and the essential reason for the distinct difference in the overall aromaticity of the molecules was also clarified. It seems that the substituent -CO groups hinders the electron delocalization of the πin system but has relatively small effect on the πout system, resulting in the molecules with less -CO group showing greater aromaticity.

Abstract:The symmetry-broken wave function can transform the 1 Σg + state of C2 from the classic double bonding to the quadruple bonding, where the transformed wave functions of ϕ L and ϕ R are singly occupied by two opposite-spinning electrons. In this article, the effective bond order (EBO) contribution of the fourth bond in C2 is assessed through the overlap integral between ϕ L and ϕ R , namely the value (0.60) is the EBO contribution of the fourth bond in the transformed scheme. Hence, the new EBO is 3.36, which is more equitable than the original EBO (2.15) in the traditional scheme. In addition, the singlet diradical character of the linear polyacetylenic C4 and C6 in the 1 Σg + state is addressed for the first time. No spin-polarized bonding exists in other linear C2n clusters, because the ionic interaction in the polyacetylenic 1 Σg + state of C4 is negligible. Moreover, the coupling energy between α and β single electrons in C4 is only 4.0 kcal mol-1 based on the electron spin-flip energy. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Direct observations of cyclo-[2n]-carbon molecules (C10, C14, C16 and C18) experimentally prepared by atom manipulation technique raised immense attraction in the general chemistry society. The cyclic π-conjugated systems, namely in-plane and out-plane, construct dual aromaticity for odd n while dual anti-aromaticity for even n. In this work, we performed electronic structure investigation into cyclo-[2n]-carbon with n = 3 ~ 9 by comparing results obtained by density functional theory (DFT) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By using Huckel molecular orbital (HMO) theory and the particle in a ring model, the electronic feature of such innovative carbon allotrope was clearly and chemically presented. Comparison showed that DFT results are considered to be incorrect for C6, which has a unique bonding structure among all cyclo-[2n]-carbon. The bond length alternating (BLA) phenomenon results from difference in electron correlation intensity and spatial distribution observed in pairs of bonding and anti-bonding orbitals. Therefore, results suggested that the dual anti-aromaticity in cyclo-[2n]-carbon with even n should be attributed to electron correlation effect, instead of decreased geometric symmetry, which actually exists in all cyclo-[2n]-carbon molecules and does not point out the essence.

Abstract:We have investigated the effects of C60 molecular orientation on the electronic structure of fcc C60 solids by performing a band-structure calculation with self-consistent MiXed-basis all-electron and full-potential approach within the local-density approximation. The degeneracies at special k points, the dispersion, and the widths of bands and the location of the valence-band maximum and the conduction-band minimum have been found to be sensitive to the orientation of the fullerenes in fcc lattices.

Abstract:We discuss the lattice relaxation upon doping of fullerens C60 and C70, using a Longuet-Higgins-Salem model and we calculate the A8-type vibrational modes. We then exploit the VEH (valence effective Hamiltonian) method to study the electronic structures of the fullerenes. The valence electronic DOS (densities of states) are calculated to be in excellent agreement with synchrotron photoemission experiments. We apply the VEH/SOS (Sum-Over-States) approach to study the nonlinear optical response of C60 and C70.
A Quantum Mechanical MP2 Study of the Electronic Effect of Nonplanarity on the Carbon Pyramidalization of Fullerene C60

Abstract:Among C60's diverse functionalities, its potential application in CO2 sequestration has gained increasing interest. However, the processes involved are sensitive to the molecule's electronic structure, aspects of which remain debated and require greater precision. To address this, we performed structural optimization of fullerene C60 using the QM MP2/6-31G* method. The nonplanarity of the optimized icosahedron is characterized by two types of dihedral angles: 138° and 143°. The 120 dihedrals of 138° occur between two hexagons intersecting at C-C bonds of 1.42 Å, while the 60 dihedrals of 143° are observed between hexagons and pentagons at C-C bonds of 1.47 Å. NBO analysis reveals less pyramidal sp1.78 hybridization for carbons at the 1.42 Å bonds and more pyramidal sp2.13 hybridization for the 1.47 Å bonds. Electrostatic potential charges range from -0.04 a.u. to 0.04 a.u. on the carbon atoms. Second-order perturbation analysis indicates that delocalization interactions in the C-C bonds of 1.42 Å (143.70 kcal/mol) and 1.47 Å (34.98 kcal/mol) are 22% and 38% higher, respectively, than those in benzene. MP2/Def2SVP calculations yield a correlation energy of 13.49 kcal/mol per electron for C60, slightly higher than the 11.68 kcal/mol for benzene. However, the results from HOMO-LUMO calculations should be interpreted with caution. This study may assist in the rational design of fullerene C60 derivatives for CO2 reduction systems.

Abstract:Localized molecular orbitals (LMOs) have been calculated for C60 and C70 by using the CNDO/2 approximation and the energy-localization scheme of Edmiston-Ruedenberg. It is found that the pi-bonding on the surfaces of the spherical carbon cages is localized into two-centered two-electron (2c2e) and three-centred two-electron (3c2e) bonds with additional charge distributions delocalized in the neighboring atoms. The localized electronic structures, the hybridized states of carbon atoms, the spherical aromaticity, and the reactivity for forming metal complexes of C60 and C70 are discussed.

Abstract:Non-isolated pentagon fullerenes with a series of special physical and chemical properties have potential applications in the fields of pharmaceutics, chemical catalysis and superconducting materials. On the basis of theoretical calculations, stabilities and aromaticities of pure and doped C32 fullerene isomers are calculated at B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level systematically for the first time. Formation enthalpies and BSSE-corrected encapsulation energies of endohedral fullerenes are also studied at the same level of theory, the changes of corrected single point energy sequence are possibly useful in controlling the proportions of different isomers in chemical synthesis.
