Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymer networks have long been recognized. With the initial focus on the unintended impact of dynamic covalent linkages on the viscoelasticity of commercial rubbers, efforts in modern times have transitioned into designing dynamic covalent polymer networks with unique adaptive properties. Whereas self‐healing and thermoset reprocessing have been the primary motivations for studying dynamic covalent polymer networks, the recent discovery of the vitrimeric rheological behavior and solid‐state plasticity for this type of material have opened up new opportunities in material innovations. This, coupled with the revelation of the dynamic characteristics of commercially relevant polymer building blocks such as esters and urethanes, suggests a promising future for this class of materials.
Azine-Based Dynamic Covalent Polyurethane Elastomers with Excellent Mechanical and Creep-Resistant Properties

Abstract:Dynamic covalent bonds have received tremendous attention since they endowed classical crosslinked polymers with new properties, including self-healing, stimuli-responsive, anti-bacterial, and recycling properties. The dynamic crosslinked polymers combined the merits of thermoset and thermoplastic elastomers. However, the dynamic nature also compromised the heat resistance of dynamic crosslinked polymers, especially the creep resistance at high temperatures. Herein, a hexahydroxy azine crosslinker was synthesized and used to prepare a range of azine-based polyurethane elastomers (PUEs). The exchange reactions of small molecular model compounds revealed that the azine moieties could exchange fast at 150 °C. The resulting azine-based PUEs showed outstanding thermal stabilities and mechanical properties owing to the conjugated structure and related hydrogen bonds of azine. The obtained azine-based PUEs also exhibited a high creep temperature of 150 °C thanks to the relatively higher exchange temperature of azine moieties and high functionality of the azine crosslinker. The degradation process of azine-based PUEs displayed solvent and acid strength dependence. The excellent reprocessing properties of azine-based PUEs were attributed to the distribution of the azine moieties both in the backbone and crosslinking points. This study provides an alternative way to solve the creep resistance of dynamic crosslinked polyurethanes and a feasible method for the industrialization of the recyclable thermoset polyurethane elastomers.

Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.

Abstract:Most of the reported dynamic chemically cross-linked polymers, especially elastomers, have a low or mediate topology freezing temperature so that they will creep at high temperatures. In this study, via the bulk polymerization of commercial feedstocks such as aromatic amine-terminated polytetrahydrofuran and isocyanates, we obtained a family of polyureas with dynamic aniline-urea bonds varying from rigid plastics to elastomers. The dynamic polyureas exhibit vitrimer-like properties due to the low degree of network dissociation, possessing high topology freezing temperatures (over 170 C-degrees) and thermal stability. The polyureas based on dynamic bonds can be used for functional applications, such as surface grafting and thermoadaptive shape memory. The aniline-urea network provides a strategy for the preparation of high-performance recyclable functional polymers.
Design of a Self-Healing Cross-Linked Polyurea with Dynamic Cross-Links Based on Disulfide Bonds and Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract:In this work, diamine chain extenders containing disulfide bonds are reacted with triisocyanates to yield dynamic chemical cross-links based on exchangeable disulfide bonds. The polyurea system with dynamic bonding shows drastic decline of storage modulus and very short relaxation times above 150 degrees C so that this polymer exhibits typical dynamic properties, e.g. self-healing, recycling and hysteresis loop recovery. The introduction of disulfide bonds dominates the thermal stimulated dynamic properties, since the control samples without disulfide bonds have longer relaxation times even at high temperatures. Interestingly, presence of disulfide bonds leads to the decline of hydrogen bonding strength which can result in their easier dissociation and subsequently easier topological network rearrangement. In addition, almost complete reversibility of the hydrogen bonding is observed from temperature-dependent Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, which reveals the important influence of hydrogen bonding on dynamic properties. Thus, Hydrogen bonding dissociation is an indirect reason of dynamic properties, while exchange reaction of disulfide bonds is the primary cause. The results may deepen our understanding of the role of hydrogen bonding in the dynamic materials. In addition, the available commercial raw component, operational feasibility and simplicity constitute a great advantage of the so-prepared dynamic polyurea system, i.e. an effective step to implementation of industrial applications and recycle the nonbiodegradable crosslinked polyureas.

Abstract:The thermosetting polyurea possessed high tensile strength and elongations at break due to strong intermolecular interactions, but their recycling and reprocessing remains a great challenge, especially at a temperature below 100 °C. Herein, the novel crosslinked polyurea with excellent recycling and reprocessing properties has been prepared by introducing the Diels-Alder dynamic covalent bond. The chemical structure, thermal mechanical properties and reprocessing performance of the crosslinked polyurea were investigated. The prepared polyurea has low relaxation time of ∼4 min at 80 °C for facile reprocessing. The tensile strength and elongation at break of crosslinked polyurea could reach 15.24 MPa and 529.2%, respectively, and its mechanical properties remain almost unchanged even after repeated processing. This work has realized the recycling of crosslinked polyurea, which has huge potential applications in environmental protection and recycling of waste plastics.

Localized creep analysis of polyurea elastomer from full-field measurements

Abstract:Polyurea is an elastomeric polymer with segregated segmental microstructure and superior mechanical properties that are sensitive to loading time and temperature. In the research leading to this report, the primary goal was to elucidate the contributions of different segmental structures to the time-dependent creep deformation and material properties, such as Poisson's ratio and the creep modulus. The approach consisted of recording high-resolution digital images and resolving the full-field strain components of creep-loaded polyurea using digital image correlation (DIC) analysis. The resulting normal axial and lateral strains exemplified a typical creep response of incompressible elastomeric polymers, denoting the primary and secondary creep regions. Despite the uniaxial loading conditions, the presence of detectable shear strains demonstrated the occurrence of creep-activated shear softening behavior. The resolved strain contour maps, unique to DIC strain analysis, revealed noteworthy strain localization (demarked as striations on the strain contour plots) in selected regions within the observed regions of interest. The localized strains were separated and organized as functions of elapsed loading time. The high-strain regions were attributed to the soft segments of polyurea with inferior mechanical properties to their hard counterparts. The extracted time history of striations revealed three distinct molecular relaxation processes: one within primary creep attributed to the convoluted contributions of the hard/soft segmental microstructure and two processes within secondary creep associated independently with the hard and soft domains, respectively. The outcomes of this research are important for the development of effective and versatile polyurea-based impact-mitigating structures.

Abstract:Constructing responsive and adaptive materials by dynamic covalent bonds is an attractive strategy in material design. Here, we present a kind of dynamic covalent polyureas which can be prepared from the highly efficient polyaddition reaction of pyrazoles and diisocyanates at ambient temperature in the absence of a catalyst. Owing to multiphase structural design, poly(pyrazole-ureas) (PPzUs) show excellent mechanical properties and unique crystallization behavior. Besides, the crosslinked PPzUs can be successfully recycled upon heating (~130 °C) and the molecular-level blending of polyurea and polyurethane is realized. Theoretical studies prove that the reversibility of pyrazole-urea bonds (PzUBs) arises from the unique aromatic nature of pyrazole and the N-assisting intramolecular hydrogen transfer process. The PzUBs could further broaden the scope of dynamic covalent bonds and are very promising in the fields of dynamic materials.
Enabling the Epoxy-Based Polyurea with Adjustable Mechanical Properties, Recyclability, and 3D Shape Configuration

Abstract:Thermosetting epoxy resins are frequently restricted by their inferior toughness, nonprocessability, and nonrecyclability resulting from their permanently cross-linked molecular network structure and the rigidity of their molecular chains, limiting the promotion of their additional value. Based on our previous research on the hindered urea bonds (HUBs), herein, we incorporated HUBs with isocyanates into the traditional epoxy network, synthesizing epoxy-based polyurea, namely, EHTPUs. The EHTPUs were synthesized by using commercial raw materials containing HDI-trimers, 2,6-dimethyl piperazine, and difunctional epoxides (E44 or PPGE) without a catalyst. By modulation of the proportion of epoxy monomers, these synthetic EHTPUs exhibit adjustable mechanical behavior, transitioning from soft elastomers to hard plastics. The dynamic HUBs can endow these EHTPUs with excellent recyclability, where their mechanical properties can be fully recovered (above 90%) after four cycles, elevating the versatility and long-term lifespan. Importantly, their dynamic mechanical properties, solvent resistance, and transmittance also can remain stable after four cycles. Meanwhile, the EHTPUs possess elastic shape memory and a 3D permanent shape reconfiguration capability in the same sample. Our work provides a fascinating way to design adjustable mechanical properties, recyclability, and multifunctionality thermosetting epoxy-based polymers, accelerating this category of recyclable polymers toward application and functionalization.

A weak but inert hindered urethane bond for high-performance dynamic polyurethane polymers

Abstract:Covalent adaptable networks (CANs), which share the properties of both thermosets and thermoplastics at the same time, are desirable for many applications. Introducing bulky substituents is a feasible way to design dynamic covalent bonds for constructing CANs, as evidenced by the successful implementation in CANs based on hindered urea bonds (HUBs). However, the dynamicity induced by introducing bulky substituents always come with low bond energy, resulting in low mechanical strength and poor stability of the CANs. Herein, we designed a novel hindered urethane bond, which is weak in thermodynamic (K eq = 1701.23 L/mol at 25 °C) and inert in kinetic at low temperature, but stable in thermodynamic (K eq = 1.54 × 104 L/mol at 100 °C) and active in kinetic at high temperature (k -1 = 0.105 h−1 at 80 °C and 0.315 h−1 at 120 °C). As a result, the polyurethane based on it exhibits high mechanical properties (with Youngs’ modulus of 1011 ± 29 MPa and flexible modulus reached 1833 ± 50 MPa) and excellent reversibility (can be reprocessed at 60 °C under 100 kPa in 30 min and completely healed at 40 °C in 10 min). Moreover, unlike to many CANs based on hindered urea bonds, our dynamic polyurethanes are highly stable in humid environment or even water solutions due to the slow hydrolysis kinetics. Such high-performance dynamic polyurethane polymers are attractive for many applications.

Abstract:The implementation of the dynamic crosslinking network toward the commodity polymers such as polyurethane has been much highlighted for resource conservation and environmental protection. This work demonstrates a feasible dual dynamic network (DDN) construction of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) by using a biobased trifunctional ketose, 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) serving as the chain extender. The WPU dispersion was compatible well with the post-added adipic acid hydrazide (ADH) as the water soluble crosslinking agent. When the one-pot system of WPU-ADH was cast into films, covalent adaptive network (CAN) was formed through the condensation of ketohydrazine and carbonyl groups driven by the evaporation of water. The produced acylhydrazone groups would also contribute to the strengthen on the H-bonding crosslinking network. The synergism of the two sets of the networks provided not only the improved mechanical performances, but their > 95% recovery efficiencies on the 28 MPa of strength and 750% fracture elongation in the self-healing, reprocessing and welding tests under moderate heating. In addition, the WPU exhibited as an effective adhesive to metal with the adhesive strength sustained after four times of deconstruction-rebonding circles. The all commercially available components, feasible preparation together with the excellent and recoverable performances suggest an industrializable resolution for the sustainability of environmental friendly WPU materials.

Abstract:The mechanical response of highly stretchable polyurea elastomer at various strain rates is investigated via experiments, theoretical analysis, and numerical modeling. Experiments encompassing quasi-static and dynamic (SHPB/SHTB - split Hopkinson pressure/tension bar) mechanical tests, as well as drop-weight impact tests, are undertaken to identify the nonlinear and rate-dependent relationship between tensile/compressive true stress and deformation of the polyurea studied. Subsequently, a compressible visco-hyperelastic constitutive model for the material is established based on the summation of Cauchy stress components. The proposed model yields good agreement with experimental data, as well as a better description of the tensile response at stretch rates of 103 s−1 than other models (e.g., the YSL2000 model (Yang et al., 2000) and the SYLL2004 model (Shim et al., 2004)). The model is implemented in the commercial finite element code Abaqus/Explicit via a user-defined material (VUMAT) subroutine. Homogenous deformation modes of polyurea, i.e., uniaxial compression and tension, are accurately captured, and non-uniform deformation of polyurea, corresponding to impact by a hemispherically-tipped drop weight, which induces both compression and tension, is also well described. Finally, it is demonstrated that the proposed model is able to characterize the dynamic response of other polyureas reported in literature. The present study is helpful for the design and development of blast and impact-resistant polyurea protective coatings.

Solvent-free Thermo-Reversible and Self-Healable Crosslinked Polyurethane with Dynamic Covalent Networks Based on Phenol-Carbamate Bonds

Abstract:Polyurethanes with dynamic covalent networks have the potential of self-healing, reprocessing and recycling, however, how to improve the efficiency of self-healing and reprocessing, and reduce the use of solvent and costs, are still problems to solve. In this work, we synthesized a cross-linked polyurethane containing dynamic phenolcarbamate bonds from low-cost raw materials without use of solvent. The dynamic polyurethane possesses excellent self-healing and reprocessing properties, which exhibits low relaxation activation energy (92.7 kJ/mol) and can be almost completely healed at 80 degrees C for 2 h. After remolded for 4 times, the material shows almost lithe change in mechanical properties. Further studies on the phenol-carbamate bonds give the quantitative reaction equilibrium constants, thermodynamic parameters and dissociation activation energy. In viewpoint of the dynamic properties and easy synthesis of phenol-carbamates, various types of cross-linked polymers containing such dynamic bonds can be further tailor designed.

Abstract:Polyurethanes with covalent adaptable networks (CANs) have received extensive attention due to their recyclability and self-healability; meanwhile, how to design and regulate the structure and properties of dynamically cross-linked polyurethanes with biobased monomers is of particular interest. Herein, we design a new type of dynamically cross-linked polyurethane derived from biobased polyol (castor oil) and industrial bulk products: bisphenol and isophorone diisocyanate. Furthermore, we develop a strategy to regulate the rearrangement kinetics of the dynamic covalent networks. The stronger the electron-withdrawing effect of the structure between the two benzene rings in bisphenol, the easier the network rearrangement and the lower the initial temperature of dynamic bonds dissociation. By varying the type and ratio of mixed bisphenols, the initial temperature of dynamic bond disassociation and the rate of network rearrangement can be adjusted within a wide range. In addition, by changing the cross-linking degree, the mechanical properties, glass-transition temperature, and network rearrangement rate can also be tuned. In this work, we have established a new method for designing biobased polyurethanes with CANs, which is beneficial for developing self-healing and recyclable cross-linked polyurethanes with variable properties from biobased feedstock and industrial bulk products.
Mesoscale Structure-Based Investigation of Polyurea Dynamic Modulus and Shock-Wave Dissipation

Abstract:Polyurea is a block copolymer with excellent shock absorption. It has a unique phase separation structure, yet there are few reports on how the mesoscale structure affects the dynamic mechanical properties. In this paper, the effect of two-phase structure on the dynamic modulus and shock-wave dissipation of polyurea is investigated by coarse-grained molecular dynamics. Shear relaxation modulus is calculated by the Green-Kubo method. Pulse load is applied by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics. The two-phase structure improves the dynamic modulus by restricting the segment movement. Shock-wave energy is dissipated by heat dissipation, viscous retardation, and plastic dissipation. The two-phase structure must obey deformation coordination, which results in more strain energy and internal friction. Hydrogen bond dissociation and structure destruction occur during the impact. Furthermore, the simulations results are verified by AFM, X-ray diffraction, and DMA experiments.
Recyclable, self-healing itaconic acid-based polyurethane networks with dynamic boronic ester bonds for recoverable adhesion application

Abstract:Currently, synthesis of biobased polyurethane (PU) networks with recyclability, self-healing, as well as robust mechanical and adhesion properties still remain a challenge. Herein, a series of robust itaconic acid-based polyurethane networks (IAPU) with dynamic boronic ester bonds are fabricated and fully characterized by FTIR and DMA. All the obtained IAPU networks display high thermostability with an initial decomposition temperature around ∼270 °C. The activation energy and typology transition temperature of the IAPU-80 are 71.9 kJ mol−1 and -25.8 °C, respectively. The IAPU-80 shows low relaxation times from 169 to 125 s at moderate temperature from 60 to 65 °C, respectively, as well as excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength = 15.6 MPa, elongation at break = 70.4%, toughness = 12.6 MJ m−3). The IAPU-80 possess outstanding scratch self-healing ability (scratch disappear after heating at 120 °C for 10 min) and reprocessability (without distinct decrement of the tensile strength after twice recycling). Remarkably, the IAPU-80 bonded wood sample exhibits a high recoverable adhesion strength (∼8.2 MPa), after reused for three times. Therefore, the self-healing and malleable IAPUs with recoverable adhesion performance are obtained by incorporating dynamic boronic ester bonds into itaconic acid-based polyurethane networks. Present work describes a green and facile way to prepare sustainable PU networks with multiple functionalities for wide applications.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymers (DCPs) have attracted extensive attention as they integrate the advantages of thermoset and thermoplastic resins. However, the heat resistance was compromised due to the unstable features of dynamic covalent bonds. Therefore, it is still a challenge to develop DCPs possessing excellent heat resistance and recycling properties at the same time. Moreover, production and employment of biomass-derived chemicals have become increasingly urgent due to the petroleum shortage and environmental problems. Herein, a biomass-sourced azine chain extender was synthesized from biomass platform compound, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Small-molecule model furan azine compounds were synthesized to investigate the exchange mechanism at a high temperature. A series of azine polyurethane elastomers were prepared, containing different ratios of furan azine chain extenders. The synthesized furan azine polyurethane elastomers (FAPUEs-3) exhibited excellent mechanical properties compared with the control sample (FAPUEs-3CS), probably owing to the rigidity and polarity of furan rings. The obtained FAPUEs also showed excellent creep resistance at high temperatures by virtue of high exchange temperatures of furan azine moieties. The FAPUEs can be easily degraded under acidic conditions in acetone. The recovery rate of tensile strength could be still above 90% after 3 recycles at 150 °C under a pressure of 10 MPa. FAPUEs also showed excellent antibacterial effects against E. coli and S. aureus as azine moieties are a special kind of Schiff base. The FAPUEs opened an avenue for developing biomass-sourced recyclable PUEs.

The Post-Curing of Waterborne Polyurethane–Acrylate Composite Latex with the Dynamic Disulfide-Bearing Crosslinking Agent

Abstract:The development of a dynamic network for commodity polymer systems via feasible methods has been explored in the context of a society-wide focus on the environment and sustainability. Herein, we demonstrate an adaptive post-curing method used to build a self-healable network of waterborne polyurethane–acrylate (WPUA) composite latex. The composite latex was synthesized via the miniemulsion polymerization of acrylates in the dispersion of waterborne polyurethane (PU), with commercial acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) serving as the functional monomer. Then, a dynamic disulfide (S–S)-bearing diamine was applied as the crosslinking agent for the post-curing of the hybrid latex via keto-amine condensation, which occurred during the evaporation of water for film formation. It was revealed that the microphase separation in the hybrid films was suppressed by the post-curing network. The mechanical performance exhibited a high reliability as regards the contents of the crosslinking agents. The reversible exchange of S–S bonds meant that the film displayed associative covalent-adaptive networks in the range of medium temperature in stress relaxation tests, and ≥95% recovery in both the stress and the strain was achieved after the cut-off films were self-healed at 70 °C for 2 h. The rebuilding of the network was also illustrated by the >80% recovery in the elongation at break of the films after three crushing–hot pressing cycles. These findings offer valuable insights, not only endowing the traditional WPUA with self-healing and reprocessing properties, but broadening the field of study of dynamic networks to polymer hybrid latex.
