Abstract:Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) tomography is mainly used to image two-dimensional temperature distributions in flames, but little work is reported in three-dimensional (3D) cases. In this work, an 3D TDLAS imaging system for dynamic flames is proposed and evaluated by using both simulated and experiment data. The wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) method is used to obtain the gas molecule absorption profiles, and the projected data along each laser path is used to reconstruct the 3D temperature distributions in the flames, by using the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART) method. In the experiment setup, a single fan-beam alignment is established for the axis-symmetrical distributed flames. Powell prisms are used to expand the laser beam to a fan shape and then the scanning galvanometer scans the beam to illuminate a planar detector array. The combustion product H 2 O in a Bunsen burner is imaged via using two absorption spectra centered at 7444 cm −1 and 7185 cm −1 , respectively. Temporal varying temperature distributions in the flames are reconstructed. The first and second harmonics of the fundamental frequency of the flame and acoustic excitation frequencies are captured in the images. These fluctuation frequencies agree with each other, and it verifies the effectiveness of the proposed TDLAS system for 3D temperature imaging.
