Abstract:Diabetes and sleep disorders showed a new significant positive correlation with nocturia, whereas a significant negative correlation was observed between employment and nocturia. Above‐high‐school education showed a constant trend toward a negative correlation with nocturia. Aim To estimate the prevalence of nocturia in middle‐aged and elderly men and evaluate its associated factors and changes over time. Methods Data of middle‐aged and older men aged ≥40 years from the 2007–2008 and 2017–2020 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were retrospectively analyzed. The prevalence of nocturia was estimated using participant questionnaires on nocturia, lifestyle‐related factors, and health factors, and its decadal changes were examined using multivariate logistic regression analysis to determine related factors associated with the prevalence of nocturia. Results The prevalence of nocturia was 38.0% in 2007–2008 and 39.6% in 2017–2020, with no significant increase observed (P = 0.3989). Abstract:Objectives:The objective of this study was to explore the association between nocturia and hypertension in a large, nationally representative adult sample.Methods:We used data from 2005 to 2016 National Health and Nutritional Examination Surveys (NHANES). A total of 29,505 participants aged 20 years old or older were included. A participant was considered to have nocturia if he or she had two or more voiding episodes at night. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to explore the association between nocturia and hypertension.Results:Participants with nocturia were associated with a higher risk of hypertension (OR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.28-1.45). Interaction tests revealed no significant effect of sex, age, race, or body mass index on the association of nocturia with hypertension. As the severity of nocturia increases, the risk of hypertension increases (P for trend <0.0001). In addition, nocturia was also related to different grades of hypertension (II vs. I: OR, 1.34, 95% CI, 1.16-1.55; III vs. I: OR, 1.67, 95% CI, 1.32-2.13).Conclusion:In this cross-sectional study, our results suggest that nocturia is associated with an increased risk for hypertension.

Abstract:Background The relationship between waist circumference and nocturia has not been previously studied. This study investigated the association between waist circumference and the occurrence of nocturia in adults. Methods We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey covering 2005–2020, encompassing 6287 adults aged ≥20. Nocturia was defined as the need to urinate two or more times during the night. First, we compared baseline characteristics between the nocturia and non‐nocturia groups. Subsequently, we used multivariate logistic regression analysis to investigate the relationship between waist circumference and nocturia prevalence. We also employed restricted cubic spline analysis to study the potential nonlinear correlation between waist circumference and the prevalence of nocturia. Recognizing the baseline data's heterogeneity based on nocturia prevalence, we conducted subgroup analyses according to age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and ethnicity. Results Our findings indicated that females, individuals aged ≥50, citizens, Non‐Hispanic Black, those with lower education levels (high school or less), higher BMIs, lower family income‐to‐poverty ratios, higher waist circumference, hypertension, and diabetes were more likely to experience nocturia. Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence, risk factors of nocturia and nocturia-related quality of life. Methods: Age, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), alcohol abuse and smoking were analyzed using logistic analysis. Multiple linear-regression analysis was used to identify factors predicting the score on the Nocturia Quality of Life (N-QOL) questionnaire. Results: 1,198 adults completed this study. 411 individuals (34.3%) answered that they arose for urination at least twice during the night. The incidence of nocturia increased with age from 8.6% in individuals younger than 40 to 67.7% in those older than 70. Hypertension [odds ratio (OR) 2.322; 95% confidence interval (95% Cl): 1.387-3.887] and diabetes (OR 2.298; 95% Cl: 1.066-4.954) were possible risk factors for nocturia. In male individuals, BPH (OR 3.900; 95% Cl: 1.890-8.049) was another risk factor. Gender was not found to be associated with nocturia. Increasing episodes of nocturia (regression coefficient: -2.564; 95% Cl: -3.08 to -2.049) and decreasing total sleeping hours (regression coefficient: 1.738; 95% Cl: 0.948-2.527) were independent factors predicting a significantly lower N-QOL score. Conclusions: Hypertension, diabetes and BPH are associated with nocturia, suggesting that multiple approaches are needed when treating patients with nocturia. Abstract:Background: Nocturia is a highly prevalent and under-considered condition and impacts the quality of life for many individuals. The long-term impact of nocturnal voiding on mortality, especially mortality from cardiovascular disease, remains unknown. The current study aimed to evaluate the relationship of nocturnal voiding episodes with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality among adults in the United States. Methods: This is a prospective cohort study of a nationally representative sample of 13,862 U.S. adults aged 20 years or older who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (1988–1994). Nighttime urination frequency was reported during an in-house interview. All-cause and cause-specific mortality were ascertained by linking to National Death Index mortality data through December 31, 2019. The associations of nocturia with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality were estimated using weighted Cox proportional hazards regression models. Results: Throughout a median follow-up of 26.7 years, 5,029 deaths were reported, comprising 1,720 deaths from cardiovascular disease. In the fully adjusted model, participants who reported once, twice, and three or more times nocturnal voiding episodes have a higher risk of cardiovascular mortality (HR1, 1.22 [95% CI, 0.997–1.49], HR2, 1.47 [95% CI, 1.13–1.91], and HR ≥ 3, 1.96 [95% CI, 1.52–2.53]) as well as all-cause mortality (HR1, 1.12 [95% CI, 0.90–1.39], HR2, 1.54 [95% CI, 1.23–1.93], and HR ≥ 3, 2.48 [95% CI, 1.81–3.40]), compared to those without nocturia, and heart disease-specific mortality (HR 1 , 1.33 [95% CI, 1.08–1.64], HR 2 , 1.62 [95% CI, 1.25–2.10], and HR ≥3 , 2.07 [95% CI, 1.61–2.67]). Nevertheless, there was no significant relationship between the number of nocturia episode changes and stroke-specific mortality. Conclusion: Nocturia was associated with a significantly augmented risk of overall and heart disease-specific mortality in a dosage-dependent manner. Early recognition and taking precautions may benefit individuals with nocturia by promoting quality of life and cardiac health.

Abstract:Aims This study aimed to examine the correlation between television (TV) and/or video viewing time and the occurrence of nocturia in adults. Methods An analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2011–2016 was conducted, involving 13 294 adults aged 20 and older. The main outcome was specified as nocturia, which refers to the requirement of urinating two or more times during the night. Initially, baseline characteristics were contrasted between individuals with and without nocturia. The effects of TV and/or video viewing time on nocturia were further explored using multivariable logistic regression models. To acknowledge the variation in baseline data regarding the prevalence of nocturia, subgroup analyses were performed. Results Adjusted multivariate analysis revealed that individuals in the group with the longest TV and/or video viewing time had a significantly 48% higher risk of experiencing nocturia compared to those with the shortest TV and/or video viewing time. The results of subgroup analyses revealed no significant differences in the interaction tests between TV and/or video viewing time and nocturia. Conclusions Our research showed that individuals who spent 5 or more hours a day watching TV and/or videos were significantly more likely to develop nocturia.

Abstract:Nocturia, marked by frequent nighttime urination, significantly impacts quality of life. This study explores the association of METS-IR (Metabolic Score for Insulin Resistance) and ABSI (A Body Shape Index) with nocturia, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). A cross-sectional analysis of NHANES data from 2005 to 2020 was performed. Multivariable logistic regression assessed the associations between METS-IR, ABSI, and nocturia, adjusting for demographic characteristics, chronic diseases, and lifestyle factors. Generalized additive models and smoothing splines were used to describe relationship dynamics. Among the 16,450 participants, both METS-IR (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.11–1.20, p < 0.0001) and ABSI (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.10–1.19, p < 0.0001) were significantly associated with nocturia based on z-scores. An incremental rise in the quartiles of METS-IR and ABSI was associated with a higher risk of nocturia. Specifically, compared to the lowest quartile (Q1), participants in the highest quartile (Q4) had an OR of 1.45 (95% CI: 1.30–1.61, p < 0.0001) for METS-IR and 1.38 (95% CI: 1.23–1.55, p < 0.0001) for ABSI. Subgroup analyses showed a stronger association between ABSI and nocturia among individuals living alone and those aged 20–38 years. Nonlinear modeling indicated a threshold effect for ABSI, with nocturia risk significantly increasing when ABSI exceeded 76.2. Higher METS-IR and ABSI indices are closely linked to a greater prevalence of nocturia, indicating that these indices can be valuable in clinical assessments for evaluating nocturia risk and supporting preventive strategies.

Abstract:Aim: This narrative review investigates the effect of dietary intake on nocturnal voiding severity. The primary aims of this review are to provide a framework for future research and ultimately contribute to more comprehensive, lifestyle-centered guidelines for the management of nocturia. Methods: A literature search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases using the keywords "nocturia", "diuresis", "natriuresis", "food", "diet", and "nutrients". Results: High fruit and vegetable consumption was negatively associated with nocturia. High intake of tea and dietary sodium showed a positive association with nocturia. Several foods have also been directly linked to changes in diuresis rate, glycemic control, and endogenous serum melatonin concentration, offering potential mechanisms for this observed effect. Overall quality of the evidence was low. Conclusion: At present, there is limited evidence to suggest that certain foods, electrolytes, and specific compounds may contribute to the pathogenesis of nocturia. A greater understanding of the impact of food and nutrients on body fluid metabolism is needed to further refine the evaluation and treatment of nocturia.
Relationship between daytime napping with the occurrence and development of diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:ObjectiveTo determine the relationship of napping with incident diabetes risk and glycaemic control in people with diabetes.DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.Data sourcesMEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library were searched for studies published from database inception to 9 May 2023.Eligibility criteriaObservational studies reporting the relationship of napping with diabetes or glycaemic control in patients with diabetes in adult populations were included.Data extraction and synthesisTwo reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted data and assessed the quality of the included studies. The results were reported as ORs and 95% CIs, which were pooled by using fixed and random effects models, and subgroup analyses were performed. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation method was used to assess the quality of the evidence.ResultsForty studies were included in our review. Habitual napping was associated with an increased diabetes risk (OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.14 to 1.27) and poor glycaemic control in patients with diabetes (OR 2.05, 95% CI 1.55 to 2.73). Nap durations less than 30 min were unrelated to diabetes (OR 1.05, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.14). Nap durations of 30-60 min were associated with diabetes risk (OR 1.09, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.17), but there were differences in the subgroup analysis results. Nap durations of more than 60 min significantly increased the risk of diabetes (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.20 to 1.44).ConclusionsNapping is associated with increased diabetes risk and poor glycaemic control, and future research will need to confirm whether there are sex and regional differences. Nap durations of more than 60 min significantly increases the risk of diabetes, and the relationship between nap duration and glycaemic control in patients with diabetes needs to be further explored in the future.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42021292103.

Abstract:Background: Increasing evidence emphasizes the potential relationship between diabetes and OAB (overactive bladder). However, large population epidemiology is still lacking. Methods: This cross-sectional study included six cycle NHANES surveys, with a total of 23863 participants. Logistic regression models were constructed to analyze the association between diabetes mellitus, diabetes-related markers, and inflammatory biomarkers with OAB. Restricted cubic splines were used to analyze the non-linear associations. Mediating analysis was performed to test the effect of inflammatory biomarkers on the relationship between diabetes-related markers and OAB. Finally, machine learning models were applied to predict the relative importance and construct the best-fit model. Results: Diabetes mellitus participants' OAB prevalence increased by 77% compared with non-diabetes. As the quartiles of diabetes-related markers increased, the odds of OAB monotonically increased in three models (all p for trend 0.05). White blood cells significantly mediated the associations between diabetes-related markers (glycohemoglobin, fasting glucose, and insulin) with OAB, and the proportions were 7.23%, 8.08%, and 17.74%, respectively (all p < 0.0001). Neutrophils partly mediated the correlation between (glycohemoglobin, fasting glucose, and insulin) and OAB at 6.58%, 9.64%, and 17.93%, respectively (all p < 0.0001). Machine learning of the XGBoost model constructs the best fit model, and XGBoost predicts glycohemoglobin is the most important indicator on OAB. Conclusion: Our research revealed diabetes mellitus and diabetes-related markers were remarkably associated with OAB, and systemic inflammation was an important mediator of this association.

Abstract:Background: Nocturia has been independently associated with cardiovascular morbidity and all-cause mortality, but such studies did not adjust for sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which may have mediated such a relationship. Our aims were to determine whether an association between nocturia and cardiovascular morbidity exists that is independent of SDB. We also determined whether nocturia is independently associated with SDB. Methodology/principal findings: In order to accomplish these aims we performed a cross-sectional analysis of the Sleep Heart Health Study that contained information regarding SDB, nocturia, and cardiovascular morbidity in a middle-age to elderly community-based population. In 6342 participants (age 63±11 [SD] years, 53% women), after adjusting for known confounders such as age, body mass index, diuretic use, diabetes mellitus, alpha-blocker use, nocturia was independently associated with SDB (measured as Apnea Hypopnea index >15 per hour; OR 1.3; 95%CI, 1.2-1.5). After adjusting for SDB and other known confounders, nocturia was independently associated with prevalent hypertension (OR 1.23; 95%CI 1.08-1.40; P = 0.002), cardiovascular disease (OR 1.26; 95%CI 1.05-1.52; P = 0.02) and stroke (OR 1.62; 95%CI 1.14-2.30; P = 0.007). Moreover, nocturia was also associated with adverse objective alterations of sleep as measured by polysomnography and self-reported excessive daytime sleepiness (P<0.05). Conclusions/significance: Nocturia is independently associated with sleep-disordered breathing. After adjusting for SDB, there remained an association between nocturia and cardiovascular morbidity. Such results support screening for SDB in patients with nocturia, but the mechanisms underlying the relationship between nocturia and cardiovascular morbidity requires further study. However, studies reporting the prevalence and associated factors of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in patients with diabetic neuropathy are rare. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the prevalence and influencing factors of UTI in patients with diabetic neuropathy. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study that recruited patients with diabetic neuropathy was conducted from January 2019 to December 2021. Collected data included patient demographic information (age, sex, education level, body mass index), clinical data (duration of diabetes, method of administration), and laboratory tests. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify the factors associated with UTI risk. The strength of association was expressed as the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Results: A total of 579 patients were recruited (male, 68.2%; overall average age, 57.89 years). Using multivariate analysis with adjustment for confounding factors, female sex (odds ratio [OR]: 4.12; 95% CI: 2.24– 7.60; P < 0.001), hypodermic insulin injection (OR: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.02– 4.35; P = 0.045), chronic kidney disease (OR: 3.12; 95% CI: 1.11– 8.80; P = 0.032), history of UTI (OR = 45.92; 95% CI: 8.62– 244.76; P < 0.001), positive urinary nitrite (OR: 32.87; 95% CI: 7.37– 146.70; P < 0.001), and high residual urine volume (OR: 2.19, 95% CI: 1.17– 4.10; P = 0.014) were independent risk factors for UTI in patients with diabetic neuropathy. Compared with the patients aged < 45 years, UTI prevalence increased 2.91-fold in patients aged 45– 54 years (OR: 3.91; 95% CI: 1.02– 15.03; P = 0.047) and 3.87-fold in those aged ≥ 65 years (OR: 4.87; 95% CI: 1.23– 19.25; P = 0.024). Conclusion: The main findings of this study showed that older age, female sex, hypodermic insulin injection, CKD, history of UTI, and positive urinary nitrite were independent risk factors for UTI in patients with diabetic neuropathy. To minimize the occurrence and resulting disease burden of UTI, knowledge regarding UTI risk factors in patients with diabetic neuropathy is critical to designate interventions. As of 2015, more than 415 million adults have DM, and this number is estimated to increase to 642 million by 2040. 1 In the United States, an estimated 30.2 million adults or 12.2% had DM in 2015, of which 7.2 million (23.3%) were not aware or did not report having DM. 2 In China, the estimated overall prevalence of DM is as high as 11.6%. 3 Diabetic neuropathy is a group of clinical syndromes caused by different pathophysiological mechanisms with diverse manifestations and is the most common chronic complication of DM. 4,5 The most common types of diabetic neuropathy are distal symmetric polyneuropathy (DSPN) and autonomic neuropathy; DSPN accounts for about 75% of diabetic neuropathy and is commonly referred to as diabetic peripheral neuropathy. 6 In Korea 7 and in Taiwan, China, 8 DSPN accounts for 43% and 21.3% of diabetic neuropathy, respectively. In addition, diabetic neurogenic bladder (DNB) is a common complication in patients with DM. The primary signs include overactive bladder, detrusor overactivity, poor bladder emptying or urinary overflow incontinence, decreased bladder sensory function, and increased bladder volume. Abstract:Evidence shows urine specimens from different women have different populations of bacteria. The co-occurrence of hypertension and hyperlipidemia in those with diabetes may alter the composition of urine and the microenviroment of the bladder in which bacteria live. The aim of this study was to characterize the urinary microbiota in women with type 2 diabetes mellitus only and those with diabetes plus hypertension and/or hyperlipidemia, and to explore whether the composition of the urinary microbiota is affected by fasting blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipids. We enrolled 28 individuals with diabetes only, 24 with diabetes plus hypertension, 7 with diabetes plus hyperlipidemia, and 11 with diabetes plus both hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Modified midstream urine collection technique was designed to obtain urine specimens. Bacterial genomic DNA was isolated using magnetic beads and the urinary microbiota was analyzed using the Illumina MiSeq Sequencing System based on the V3-V4 hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene. Among the four cohorts, the diabetes plus hypertension cohort had the highest relative abundance of Proteobacteria. In contrast, the diabetes plus hyperlipidemia cohort had the lowest relative abundance of Proteobacteria. In addition, Escherichia and Gardnerella were not found in the diabetes plus hyperlipidemia cohort but they were found in all of the other cohorts. Cetobacterium was only present in the diabetes plus hypertension cohort. The most abundant bacteria in the diabetes only and diabetes plus hyperlipidemia cohorts was Lactobacillus, while Prevotella was the most abundant bacteria in the diabetes plus hypertension and diabetes plus hypertension and hyperlipidemia cohorts. Moreover, the relative abundance of Lactobacillus was significantly lower in the diabetes plus hypertension cohort than in the diabetes only and diabetes plus hyperlipidemia cohorts. Several bacteria were correlated with the participants' fasting blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipids. In conclusion, hypertension and/or hyperlipidemia and other patient factors can affect the composition of the urinary microbiota in those with diabetes. The insights from this study could be used to develop microbiota-based treatment for comorbid conditions, including urinary tract infections, in those with diabetes.

Abstract:Objective This study aims to investigate how arthritis, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, affects the incidence of nocturia in adults aged 20–59. Methods This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2020, involving 18 745 adults aged 20–59. Arthritis, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, was considered as the exposure factor, with nocturia as the outcome variable. We first compared the baseline characteristics of individuals with and without nocturia. The impact of arthritis on nocturia was assessed using weighted multivariate logistic regression models. To ensure the stability of the results, propensity score matching analysis and subgroup analyses were conducted. Results The incidence of nocturia was approximately 22.31%, and the incidence of arthritis was about 15.32% (2871/18 745), with osteoarthritis accounting for 35.49% (1019/2871) and rheumatoid arthritis accounting for 20.20% (580/2871). Abstract:Purpose To evaluate the prevalence, risk factors, and symptom bother of nocturia in Chinese adults. Methods A population-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted among individuals aged ≥18 years in five geographical regions of China, via a stratified sampling approach. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain information on sociodemographic characteristics, general health, and past disease, and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Male/Female Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Long Form was administered to estimate the prevalence of nocturia and rate their symptom bother. The current International Continence Society definition of nocturia (≥1 void/night) was used, and a secondary analysis was conducted with the threshold of two or more voids per night. Results Of the 4,723 subjects contacted, 3,023 completed the interviews (64 % response rate). After being weighted by age and genders, 57.5 % participants reported voiding once or more per night and 24.7 % twice or more per night. Advanced age, higher body mass index, smoking, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus were associated risk factors in both genders. Lower urinary tract symptoms suggestive of benign prostatic enlargement increased the occurrence of nocturia in men, and higher parity and vaginal delivery were correlated with nocturia in women. Degree of bother increased with the higher frequency of nocturia, but was not affected by genders. Conclusions The prevalence of nocturia is quite high in China and increases with advancing age. Nocturia bothers sufferers greatly, and many known risk factors are associated with this bothersome condition. Experiencing two or more nightly voids is more clinically relevant.
Association of Diabetic Microvascular Complications and Parameters of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract:Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent in patients with type 2 diabetes, but the influence of OSA on diabetes complications is not clear. We aimed to investigate the association of OSA with chronic diabetes complications in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes.Subjects and Methods: In total, 880 hospitalized patients were enrolled in a multicenter, cross-sectional study that involved 12 hospitals from six cities in the People's Republic of China. Overnight sleep monitoring with a portable monitor was used to record respiratory parameters, including the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), the oxygen desaturation index (ODI), the oxygen saturation (SPO2), and the cumulative time of SPO2 below 90% or 85% (CT90% and CT85%, respectively). Chronic diabetes complications were recorded from medical charts.Results: CT90% was independently associated with diabetic nephropathy (DN) after adjusting for age, sex, diabetes duration, glycosylated hemoglobin, body mass index, hypertension, and the use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor/angiotensin receptor blocker drugs within 1 week. The associated parameters increased from two (the average SPO2 and CT90%) to three (ODI, the lowest SPO2, and CT85%) when the severity of DN increased from microalbuminuria to renal insufficiency. The estimated glomerular filtration rate was independently correlated with ODI (beta = -0.172, P = 0.029) and the lowest SPO2 (beta = 0.354, P = 0.004) after adjustments. The lowest SPO2 was associated with proliferative diabetic retinopathy by univariate logistic regression but was not significant in multivariate regression after adjustment.Conclusions: Parameters of nocturnal hypoxemia are associated with DN and renal function of patients with type 2 diabetes. The parameters of hypoxemia may more sensitively reflect the association of OSA and diabetic microvascular complications than AHI.
Gender-specific Independent and Combined Dose–response Association of Napping and Night Sleep Duration with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Rural Chinese Adults: the RuralDiab Study

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the independent and combined dose-response association of napping and night sleep duration with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among different genders in the rural Chinese population.& para;& para;Methods: For this research, a total of 19,257 participants were enrolled in the Rural Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (RuralDiab) study. Napping and night sleep duration were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Restricted cubic splines and logistic regression were used to estimate the relationship between napping and night sleep duration with T2DM.& para;& para;Results: A linear dose-response relationship between napping duration and T2DM as well as a U-shaped relationship between night sleep duration and T2DM were found. Compared with those who reported no napping, participants who had a napping duration of >= 91 min were associated with a 19% increase in prevalence of T2DM. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals (CIs)) for T2DM were 1.48 (1.03, 2.14) and 1.50 (1.22, 1.85) for shorter (<= 5 h) and longer (>9 h) night sleep duration compared with the referential group. Additionally, the combination of longer napping duration (>= 91 min) and night sleep duration (>9 h) increased 104% (95% CI: 45%, 128%) prevalence for T2DM. These associations were not found in males but were evident in females.& para;& para;Conclusions: Longer napping duration and extreme night sleep duration increased the prevalence of T2DM. Predictive factors for nocturia in elderly men: a cross-sectional study in 21 general practices

Abstract:Objective: To measure the prevalence of nocturia in general practice and to determine which factors are associated with nocturia. Subjects and methods: Data were collected from 3048 elderly men, who completed a questionnaire that was sent to every man aged 55-75 years in 21 general practices in Maastricht (the Netherlands). The symptom of nocturia was defined as two or more nocturnal voids. We investigated the prevalence of nocturia and the predictive relationships with the following factors: cerebrovascular disease, diabetes mellitus/insipidus (DMI), Parkinson's diseases, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, bladder/prostate cancer, kidney diseases, urinary bladder inflammation, congenital diseases (kidneys or prostate), using medical treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms, other treatment, psychological depression, symptoms suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and alcohol intake. Results: Data from 2934 respondents were analysed; the prevalence of nocturia (two or more nocturnal voids) was 32.9% (965 men). The frequency of the number of nocturnal voids was: zero in 588 (20.0%), one in 1344 (45.8%), two in 611 (20.8%), three in 208 (7.1%), four in 70 (2.4%), and five or more in 76 (2.6%), with 37 values missing. A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that nocturia in elderly men was significantly related to bladder/prostate cancer, cerebrovascular disease, treatment of voiding disorders, and moderate alcohol consumption. Next to these, BPH had a significant relationship with nocturia, especially in respondents with DMI and hypertension. Cardiovascular disease or hypertension was significantly related to nocturia, mutually replacing each other as a risk factor. Conclusion: Nocturia in elderly men is be related to many sources of potential risk factors: earlier urological diseases, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, BPH, DMI and behavioural habits. Some of these sources may interact and generate especially high risk in some groups for nocturia.
