Abstract:In this review, the most recent progress on low‐dimensional II–VI semiconductors based flexible photodetectors and their application in wearable electronics are summarized, including wearable monitoring sensors, image sensors, and self‐powered integrated wearable electronics. Meanwhile, the challenges and outlook of flexible photodetectors in the future integration of wearable electronic are also discussed. Flexible photodetectors exhibit many advantages such as a good bendability, foldability, and even stretchability as well as weight light, which have triggered a widely concerned in wearable electronics including wearable monitoring, wearable image sensing, self‐powered integrated electronics, etc. Recently, various II–VI semiconductor nanostructures have become promising candidates in flexible photodetectors due to their unique characteristics, such as direct bandgap semiconductors, excellent optical and electric properties, high quantum efficiency, and inherent mechanical flexibility. Herein, the most recent progress on low‐dimensional (0D, 1D, 2D, and related heterostructures) II–VI semiconductors based flexible photodetectors and their application in wearable electronic is reviewed. First, a brief introduction of the main sensing mechanisms and key figures of merits for photodetectors is presented. Then, the recent progresses on flexible photodetectors are provided, in which the functional materials synthesis methods are also discussed. More importantly, the applications of the flexible photodetectors are summarized, including wearable monitoring sensors, image sensors, and self‐powered integrated wearable electronics. Finally, the challenges and the future research direction of the flexible photodetectors are discussed, meanwhile the outlook for the development of flexible photodetectors in the future integration of wearable electronic is also provided.

Abstract:<p>Flexible photodetectors have emerged during the past few years for applications in healthcare, security, and environmental monitoring. Recently, 2D materials have started being implemented as functional layers in flexible photodetector due to their outstanding optoelectronic characteristics paired with high mechanical flexibility. In this work, the authors analyze the progress of 2D material‐based flexible photodetectors architectures, with a focus on graphene family, (Di)chalcogenides and van der Waals heterostructures. The optical and mechanical characteristics of 2D materials flexible photodetectors are systematically analyzed. Furthermore, the processing techniques compatible with flexible substrates and proof‐of‐concept sensors integrating 2D material flexible photodetectors are also reviewed. In the last section, the remaining challenges and future perspectives are discussed, envisioning to support future developments in the field.</p>

Abstract:As an important component of future electronic devices, photodetectors require mechanical flexibility, and stretchability to meet the demands of conformal, portable, and lightweight applications. As expected, flexible photodetectors (FPDs) were born timely and have obtained rapid development driven by the considerable progress of the optoelectronic industry. Especially, FPDs appear to serve as a bridge between electronic information systems and biological systems due to their potential functional applications including wearable devices, artificial intelligence, bionics devices, etc. However, the poor mechanical stability, narrow spectral response range, low responsivities and difficulty in miniaturization of traditional FPDs have greatly limited their commercial and industrial applications. One of the most promising routes toward addressing the inherent shortcomings of FPDs is through constructing novel micro/nano-structured integrated flexible detection systems to achieve diverse functions and enhance performance, hence facilitating flexible integration. In this review, the recent advances in performance-enhancing strategies for FPDs are outlined and discussed. First, the detection mechanism, performance enhancement mode, and key figures-of-merit of FPDs are summarized and basic design principles of the FPDs are discussed emphatically. Then, recent progress in structural engineering-based performance enhancement of FPDs is reviewed, categorized by the types of enhancement, electric field manipulation engineering, strain engineering, and optical field manipulation engineering. Moreover, this review also summarizes the integration strategies for the application of FPDs and finally puts forward the challenges and future research directions in these fields.

Abstract:Flexible photonic devices, which arc bendable, foldable, and even stretchable, arc not limited to the rigid physical state constraints of traditional optoelectronic devices and thus unique tunable optoelectronic properties could be achieved, which greatly expands the development and practical implementation of traditional optoelectronic devices. Combining with new functional optical materials, novel device integration technologies, and the advantages of photonic devices over electronic devices in material sensing specificity, channel capacity, and resistance to electromagnetic interference, flexible photonic devices show great research and application value in emerging and interdisciplinary fields such as wearable sensing, high-speed optical interconnect, light field manipulation, and optogenetic applications in biology. However, challenges including the fabrication difficulties, mechanical flexibility limitation, and the degree of integration exist in current flexible photonic technologies. This paper briefly reviews the recent progress on flexible photonic materials and devices to address those challenges. And further development and application demonstration for the flexible photonics has also been summarized and discussed.

Abstract:Organic photodetectors (OPDs) are promising for applications in flexible electronics due to their advantages of excellent photodetection performance, cost‐effective solution‐fabrication capability, flexible device design, and adaptivity to manufacturability. This review outlines the recent advances in the development of high‐performance OPDs and their applications in flexible electronics. The approaches to developing different noise reduction methods, filter‐free spectral selective detection, flexible OPDs, and scale‐up production of flexible OPDs through solution‐fabrication processes are discussed. Applications of the OPD technology ultimately result in the materialization of wearable units, flexible and compact information sensors at commercially viable costs, including wearable health self‐monitoring devices, flexible optical communication systems, and flexible large‐area image sensors. Recent advances in organic photodetectors (OPDs) and applications in flexible electronics are summarized. The advantages and the performance of the OPDs with novel device designs, e.g., filter‐free spectral selective OPDs, are discussed. Practical solution‐fabrication and printing techniques are also reviewed.

Abstract:Mechanically flexible photonic devices are essential building blocks for novel bio-integrated optoelectronic systems, wearable sensors, and flexible consumer electronics. Here we describe the design and experimental demonstration of high-performance flexible semiconductor nanomembrane photodetectors integrated with single-mode chalcogenide glass waveguides. Through a combination of a waveguide-integrated architecture to enhance light-matter interactions and mechanical engineering of multilayer configurations to suppress strains, the detector devices exhibit record optical and mechanical performance. The devices feature a noise equivalent power as low as 0.02 pW.Hz(1/2), a linear dynamic range exceeding 70 dB, and a 3-dB bandwidth of 1.4 GHz, all measured at 1530 nm wavelength. The devices withstand 1000 bending cycles at a submillimeter radius without degradation in their optoelectronic responses. Abstract:Next-generation optoelectronics with lightweight, low-cost, high flexibility, and large-area compatibility have been developed to conform to soft surfaces, even human skins, to achieve various wearable and portable functionalities. Among them, flexible photodetectors (FPDs) based on metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have become an emerging optoelectronic device due to their tunable optoelectronic properties, excellent light-sensing performance, remarkable mechanical flexibility, and relatively low-temperature solution processability. This review examines the recent advances in FPDs based on MHPs, focusing on both the materials and devices of optoelectronic and mechanical properties, the deposition and patterning technologies, the encapsulation strategies, and their potential applications in conformable electronics. We also discuss the challenges and provide a future perspective on the further applications.

Abstract:Flexible photodetectors (PDs) have garnered increasing attention for their potential applications in diverse fields, including weather monitoring, smart robotics, smart textiles, electronic eyes, wearable biomedical monitoring devices, and so on. Notably, perovskite nanostructures have emerged as a promising material for flexible PDs due to their distinctive features, such as a large optical absorption coefficient, tunable band gap, extended photoluminescence decay time, high carrier mobility, low defect density, long exciton diffusion lengths, strong self-trapped effect, good mechanical flexibility, and facile synthesis methods. In this review, we first introduce various synthesis methods for perovskite nanostructures and elucidate their corresponding optical and electrical properties, encompassing quantum dots, nanocrystals, nanowires, nanobelts, nanosheets, single-crystal thin films, polycrystalline thin films, and nanostructured arrays. Furthermore, the working mechanism and key performance parameters of optoelectronic devices are summarized. The review also systematically compiles recent advancements in flexible PDs based on various nanostructured perovskites. Finally, we present the current challenges and prospects for the development of perovskite nanostructures-based flexible PDs.

Abstract:The flexible photodetector is the essential device for many of the optoelectronic applications and its performance can be influenced by a number of factors, including semiconductor materials, illumination conditions, device structures, etc. Therefore, in order to better design and use the flexible photodetectors, it is necessary to understand how these factors affect their performance. In this study, we fabricated flexible lateral p-intrinsic-n photodetectors formed with single-crystalline silicon and germanium nanomembranes on polyethylene terephthalate substrates. The performance of the flexible photodetectors with various dimensions is presented under different illumination conditions. The influences of different semiconductor materials, illumination conditions (wavelength and power of the incident light), and dimensions of the intrinsic region (length and width) on the photocurrent and efficiency are investigated, and the underlying mechanisms are studied based on experimental, simulation, and theoretical analysis. The results provide guidelines for the design and fabrication of flexible single-crystalline semiconductor photodetectors on the plastic substrates. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:While the vast majority of integrated photonic devices are traditionally fabricated on rigid substrates, photonic integration of both passive and active photonic devices on flexible polymer substrates has been demonstrated in recent years, and its applications in imaging, sensing and optical interconnects are being actively pursued. This paper presents an overview of the emerging field of mechanically flexible photonics, where we examine material processing and mechanical design rationales dictated by application-specific optical functionalities. The examples include semiconductor nanomembranes which serve as the key enabling material for hybrid inorganic-organic flexible active photonics, and monolithically integrated passive photonic structures fabricated from semiconductors, polymers, or amorphous materials. Technical challenges and further research opportunities related to materials engineering and device integration on flexible substrates are also discussed. (c) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Photodetectors are critical components in a wide range of applications, from imaging and sensing to communications and environmental monitoring. Recent advancements in material science have led to the development of emerging photodetecting materials, such as perovskites, polymers, novel two-dimensional materials, and quantum dots, which offer unique optoelectronic properties and high tunability. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the synthesis methodologies for these cutting-edge materials, highlighting their potential to enhance photodetection performance. Additionally, we explore the design and fabrication of photodetectors with novel structures and physics, emphasizing devices that achieve high figure-of-merit parameters, such as enhanced sensitivity, fast response times, and broad spectral detection. Finally, we discuss the demonstration of new applications enabled by these advanced photodetectors, including flexible and wearable devices, next-generation imaging systems, and environmental sensing technologies. Through this review, we aim to provide insights into the current trends and future directions in the field of photodetection, guiding further research and development in this rapidly evolving area.

Abstract:Flexible and stretchable optoelectronics have attracted attention in recent years due to their remarkable capabilities for use in wearable computers, personal monitors, and other systems. These devices are conformal to human skin or tissue due to mechanical compliance, which is extremely suitable for biomedical or clinical applications, such as bionic devices, monitors, or curing diseases. This paper presents an overview of the flexible and stretchable inorganic optoelectronics, including mechanical design, photonic analysis, fabrication processing, some examples of the devices, and their applications in biomedical engineering. First, the recent technological advances in flexible designs and fabrication strategies are summarized. Then, the flexible and stretchable devices with different functionalities are described, including light-emitting devices, photodetectors, and other optical devices. Finally, we show the applications of flexible and stretchable optoelectronics on biomedical engineering. Abstract:Flexible photodetectors have become a focus of current researches because they may offer some unique applications in various new areas that require flexible, lightweight, and mechanical shock-resistive sensing elements. In this work, we designed flexible organic-inorganic hybrid photodetectors on various flexible substrates, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET), common Sellotape and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with n-type phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and p-type pearl-like GaP nanowires (NWs) as the active materials. The as-fabricated hybrid devices exhibited an optimized performance superior to the device made of pristine GaP NWs, with a fast response time (43 ms) and high on/off ratio (∼170). Under different bending conditions, the flexible hybrid photodetectors demonstrated excellent flexibility and electrical stability, which make them very promising for further large-scale, high sensitivity and high speed photodetector applications.

Abstract:Photodetectors (PDs), as an indispensable component in electronics, are highly desired to be flexible to meet the trend of next-generation wearable electronics. Unfortunately, no in-depth reviews on the design strategies, material exploration, and potential applications of wearable photodetectors are found in literature to date. Thus, this progress report first summarizes the fundamental design principles of turning "hard" photodetectors "soft," including 2D (polymer and paper substrate-based devices) and 1D PDs (fiber shaped devices). In short, the flexibility of PDs is realized through elaborate substrate modification, material selection, and device layout. More importantly, this report presents the current progress and specific requirements for wearable PDs according to the application: monitoring, imaging, and optical communication. Challenges and future research directions in these fields are proposed at the end. The purpose of this progress report is not only to shed light on the basic design principles of wearable PDs, but also serve as the roadmap for future exploration in wearable PDs in various applications, including health monitoring and Internet of Things.

Abstract:Flexible photodetector (FPD) is a crucial component in modern wearable/flexible systems and plays a vital role in healthcare, environmental monitoring, flexible display, and other fields. However, achieving satisfactory interfacial adhesion among the electrode, photoactive material, and flexible substrate at the same time to fabricate FPDs with high flexibility, stretchability, stability, and mechanically compliance is still a challenge. In this study, we propose a green and eco-friendly water-system processing strategy to construct all-in-one FPDs, using borate ester polymers (BPs) as both the co-matrix of the photoactive layer substrate and the conductive ink. The flexible substrate exhibits a high adaptation to the conductive ink, and thus, efficient interface charge transfer with the complicated pattern electrode. The resulting FPD exhibits stable photoresponse under different bending angles and large mechanical strains. Even after 2000 cycles of light stimulation test at a whole device elongation of 50%, the FPD exhibits no significant decrease in the photoresponse performance. Such devices may provide new opportunities for multifunctional electronic skin and wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Abstract Wearable smart sensors are considered to be the new generation of personal portable devices for health monitoring. By attaching to the skin surface, these sensors are closely related to body signals (such as heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, breath markers, etc.) and ambient signals (such as ultraviolet radiation, inflammable and explosive, toxic and harmful gases), thus providing new opportunities for human activity monitoring and personal telemedicine care. Here we focus on photodetectors and gas sensors built from metal chalcogenide, which have made great progress in recent years. Firstly, we present an overview of healthcare applications based on photodetectors and gas sensors, and discuss the requirement associated with these applications in detail. We then discuss advantages and properties of solution-processable metal chalcogenides, followed by some recent achievements in health monitoring with photodetectors and gas sensors based on metal chalcogenides. Last we present further research directions and challenges to develop an integrated wearable platform for monitoring human activity and personal healthcare.

Abstract:AbstractThe fabrication of flexible sensors is a potential way to promote the progress of modern social science and technology due to their wide applications in high‐performance electronic equipment and devices. Flexible sensors based on organic materials combine the unique advantages of flexibility and low cost, increasing interest in healthcare monitoring, treatment, and human–machine interfaces. Advances in materials science and biotechnology have rapidly accelerated the development of bio‐integrated multifunctional sensors and devices. Due to their excellent mechanical and electrical properties, many types of functional materials provided benefits for the construction of various sensors with improved flexibility and stretchability. In this review, recent advance in the fabrication of flexible sensors by using functional nanomaterials including nanoparticles, carbon materials, metal‐organic materials, and polymers is presented. In addition, the potential biomedical applications of the fabricated flexible sensors for detecting gas molecules signals, small molecules, DNA/RNA, proteins, others are introduced and discussed.
