Abstract:Biodegradable and antimicrobial film without antibiotics is of great significance to the solution of food safety and plastic pollution problems. Herein, using bagasse cellulose as matrix, PVA as toughening agent, ZnO as performance enhancer, epichlorohydrin as crosslinking agent, a series of ZnO reinforced cellulose-based crosslinked films (PVA/Cel/ZnO) were prepared via hydroxyl crosslinking of film and in-situ ZnO generation. The structure, morphology and properties of composite films were comprehensively characterized. The results indicated that the PVA/Cel/ZnO composite crosslinked film (10PVA/Cel-6Zn) containing 10% PVA and 6% Zn(NO3)2 showed the best overall performance. The tensile strength and elongation at break reached 79.25 MPa and 16.86%, respectively, which were approximately 216% and 234% higher than those of the 10PVA&Cel blend film without crosslinking and ZnO. Moreover, the resultant film free of antibiotic showed excellent bacteriostatic activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. In addition, the composite crosslinked films well preserved fruits like grape and maintained their biodegradable feature in soil.
