Abstract:Esters are considered as potential fuels in the transportation sector including road, marine shipping, and aviation to control greenhouse gas emissions. In the context of this possibility, it is imperative to keep abreast of ester fuels combustion dynamics for their clean and effective use in engines. Here, a review that summarizes the recent investigations on laminar burning velocity, ignition delay time, kinetic modelling, and soot emissions of C2-C11 esters is presented. Moreover, the biosynthesis processes, physicochemical properties, and esters interaction with petroleum-based fuels in engines are discussed. The simulated laminar burning velocities of C2-C11 esters are obtained at pressures up to 10 bar and temperatures up to 473 K using the esters chemical mechanisms and compared with the experimental data. There is a considerable difference between the simulated and experimental laminar burning velocities. A review of the ignition delay time and kinetic modelling studies shows that H-abstraction mostly consumes ester fuels. The soot emission investigations indicate that the length of aliphatic carbon chains in esters influences soot reactivity. Generally, esters decrease soot and particulate emissions. To sum up, this study information could be useful in the investigations of C2-C11 esters in the future for their potential applications in engines.
