Abstract:Abstract The selective functionalization of inert CH bonds is regarded as one of the most attractive research field due to the advantages of expanding diversity, reducing waste and synthetic economy in modifying organic compounds. However, because of the high bond energy, similar bond strengths and steric environments, the CH bond functionalization meets the challenge of controlling the regio‐ and stereoselectivity. Due to the efficient electron transfer and energy transfer, the photocatalysis could provide an accessible alternative for the regioselective functionalization of inert CH bonds. In recent years, the enantioselective functionalization of inert CH bonds by photochemistry has been developed. This article summarized this field as photocatalysis with three main strategies: transition‐metal catalysis, chiral Lewis acid catalysis, and chiral organocatalysis.

Abstract:The manipulation of unactivated aliphatic C–H bonds remains one of the most challenging tasks in synthetic chemistry. Direct hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) photocatalysis is an appealing approach to this goal. However, many methods are constrained due to low catalytic efficiency. Here we report the use of a Brønsted acid to enhance the efficiency of an inexpensive organic HAT photocatalyst, eosin Y. This strategy enables valuable transformations, including alkylation, heteroarylation and fluorination, of a wide array of unactivated C( sp 3 )–H bonds, using the alkane substrate as the limiting reagent. The process has been applied to the late-stage functionalization of natural products and pharmaceuticals to selectively form C–H-functionalized analogues. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies show that the HAT reactivity is significantly enhanced when the sp 3 oxygen atoms on eosin Y are protonated. The method has been shown to be general across different types of direct HAT photocatalysts, demonstrating its potential in native C–H bond functionalization.

Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:The photo-induced aerobic oxidation of C–H bonds has become an increasingly valuable strategy in organic synthesis, offering a green and efficient method for introducing oxygen into organic molecules. The utilization of molecular oxygen as an oxidant, coupled with visible-light photocatalysis, has gained significant attention due to its sustainability, atom economy, and environmentally benign nature. This review highlights the recent advancements in the field, focusing on the development of metal-free and transition-metal-based photocatalytic systems and novel photosensitizers capable of promoting selective C–H bond oxidation. The mechanistic pathways involved in various substrate oxidations, including benzylic, alkyl, alkene, and alkyne C–H bond transformations, are discussed. This review concludes with insights into the potential for integrating photocatalysis with renewable energy sources, positioning photo-induced aerobic oxidation as a cornerstone of sustainable chemical processes.

Abstract:Activation and selective oxidation of inert C(sp3)-H bonds remain one of the most challenging tasks in current synthetic chemistry due to the inherent inertness of C(sp3)-H bonds. In this study, inspired by natural monooxygenases, we developed a coordination polymer with naphthalenediimide (NDI)-based ligands and binuclear iron nodes. The mixed-valence FeIIIFeII species and chlorine radicals (Cl•) are generated via ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) between FeIII and chlorine ions. These Cl• radicals abstract a hydrogen atom from the inert C(sp3)-H bond of alkanes via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). In addition, NDI converts oxygen to 1O2 via energy transfer (EnT), which then coordinates to FeII, forming an FeIV = O intermediate for the selective oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds. This synthetic platform, which combines photoinduced EnT, LMCT and HAT, provides a EnT-mediated parallel multiphoton excitation strategy with kinetic synergy effect for selective C(sp3)-H oxidation under mild conditions and a blueprint for designing coordination polymer-based photocatalysts for C(sp3)-H bond oxidation.

Abstract:Developing economically and environmentally sustainable protocols for highly effective and selective oxidation of organics is of crucial importance in both academia and industry. Aiming at activating molecular oxygen to form reactive oxygen species as the key oxidant, a series of pyridinium-based small molecules have been designed and developed as simple and effective photocatalysts for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes. A facile anion exchange strategy is applied to introduce heavy atoms, which promote the generation of singlet oxygen and reduce the competitive effect between electron donors. A remarkably improved photocatalytic selectivity is realized in a simple, effective, and green approach at room temperature in an air atmosphere without any metals or additives. In the face of increasingly serious energy and environmental issues, this work provides new insights into molecular oxygen activation and reveals the great potential of the pyridinium family as a green and sustainable catalyst system toward an advanced oxidation reaction and the utilization of light energy.

Abstract:Electrochemical C(sp3) − H oxygenation of phenols derivatives were accomplished using H2O as the sole oxygen source. Thus, selectively oxidative 4-cresols to 4-acylphenols derivatives proved viable with the aid of indirect electrolysis, through metal- and external oxidant free environmental-friendly and safe electrocatalytic conditions. Advances of this strategy were proved by its ability to transform various sulfonamides with excellent site and regioselectivity. Detailed mechanistic studies allowed to delineate the exact profile of the generation of the oxygenation events.

Abstract:Functionalizing molecules through the selective cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds is an attractive approach in synthetic chemistry. Despite recent advances in both transition-metal catalysis and radical chemistry, the selective cleavage of inert Csp3-Csp3 bonds in hydrocarbon feedstocks remains challenging. Examples reported in the literature typically involve substrates containing redox functional groups or highly strained molecules. In this article, we present a straightforward protocol for the cleavage and functionalization of Csp3-Csp3 bonds in alkylbenzenes using photoredox catalysis. Our method employs two distinct bond scission pathways. For substrates with tertiary benzylic substituents, a carbocation-coupled electron transfer mechanism is prevalent. For substrates with primary or secondary benzylic substituents, a triple single-electron oxidation cascade is applicable. Our strategy offers a practical means of cleaving inert Csp3-Csp3 bonds in molecules without any heteroatoms, resulting in primary, secondary, tertiary, and benzylic radical species.

Abstract:Photoinduced the direct oxidation of benzyl C(sp3)–H bonds provides an attractive strategy for producing high‐value chemicals or intermediates. Unlike the conventional approaches that typically require transition‐metal catalysts, semiconductors, and organic photosensitizers as the photocatalysts, herein we report a bromine salt‐promoted photoinduced aerobic oxidation protocol for methylarenes. By applying NH4Br as both the bromine radical source and hydrogen atom transfer agent, photoinduced oxidation of methylarenes to the corresponding carboxylic products exhibits high conversion and selectivity. Furthermore, control experiments confirm that reactive oxygen species are proved to be essential for the success of this transformation. This strategy provides a metal‐/strong oxidant‐/photocatalyst‐free paradigm for the direct deep oxidation of methylarenes.

Abstract:The ideal catalytic oxidation system that uses the most environmentally benign reactants such as molecular oxygen and natural light and features sustainable heterogeneous characteristics, although long sought, has been hardly achieved. Herein, a spirobifluorene-based conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) covalently embedded with N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) as phthalimido N-oxyl (PINO) radical precursor has been designed and synthesized. The as-synthesized porous CMP-NHPI leverages the spirobifluorene-based CMP as an exquisite photoredox platform to activate molecular oxygen for reactive oxygen species (ROS) and synergistically convert the embedded NHPI to active PINO radical, thus establishing fully green catalytic system. In particular, under visible light irradiation and air at ambient temperature, various primary aromatic alcohols can be high selectively oxidized to the corresponding aldehydes or acids by switching the reaction solvent from acetonitrile to water. Control experiments and mechanistic studies reveal that the regulation of the ROS in different solvents is responsible for the specific solvent-dependent oxidations.

The recent advances on electro-photocatalytic C-H functionalization via anode oxidation are highlighted with a focus on mechanistic aspects. Abstract:Regioselective C-H bond functionalization is pivotal in modern scientific exploration, offering solutions for achieving novel synthetic methodologies and pharmaceutical development. In this aspect, achieving alternative regioselective functionalization, like para-selective products in electron-poor aromatics, diverges from traditional methods. Leveraging the advantages of atomically dispersed photocatalysts, we designed a robust photocatalyst for an unconventional regioselective aromatic C–H bond functionalization. This innovation enabled para-selective trifluoromethylations of electron-deficient meta-directing aromatics (-NO2, -CF3, -CN, etc.), which is entirely orthogonal to the traditional approaches. Mechanistic experiments and DFT analysis confirmed the interaction between Cu-metal and the aromatic substrate, alongside the photocatalyst's molecular arrangement, driving selective exposure of the para-selective functionalization. This strategic approach elucidated pathways for precise molecular transformations, advancing the frontier of regioselective C–H bond functionalization by using atomically dispersed photocatalysts in organic synthesis.

Abstract:C-H functionalization provides unparalleled benefits for the late-stage modification of complex molecules. In recent years, photocatalysis has progressed significantly due to its mild conditions, sustainability and selectivities. Current mechanisms for photocatalytic C-H functionalization primarily involve direct single-electron oxidation and direct hydrogen atom transfer (d-HAT) by radicals, both of which are invalid for the functionalization of highly electron-deficient C(sp3)-H bonds. Here, we developed a cooperative photoenzymatic system consisting of a flavin-dependent ene-reductase (ER) and an exogenous photocatalyst fluorescein (FI) to achieve enantiodivergent functionalization of electron-deficient C(sp3)-H bonds. Mechanistic studies revealed a novel pathway for radical intermediate formation via excited-state FI*-induced single-electron oxidation of carbanions under alkaline conditions. The overall catalytic efficiency is enhanced by the electron transfer (ET) between FMNox and FI radical anion, while the stereoselectivity is controlled by ERs through enantioselective hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). This suggests that thermodynamically unfavorable single-electron oxidation of highly electron-deficient species can occur through ion-to-radical conversion. We anticipate that our novel mode of photoenzymatic catalysis will inspire new pathways for generating free radical intermediates and foster innovative strategies for achieving photoenzymatic new-to-nature reactions.

Visible-Light-Promoted Switchable Selective Oxidations of Styrene over Covalent Triazine Frameworks in Water.

Abstract:Using photocatalytic oxidation to convert basic chemicals into high value compounds in environmentally benign reaction media is a current focus in catalytic research. The challenge lies in gaining controllability over product formation selectivity. We design covalent triazine frameworks as heterogeneous, metal-free, and recyclable photocatalysts for visible-light-driven switchable selective oxidation of styrene in pure water. Selectivity in product formation was achieved by activation or deactivation of the specific photogenerated oxygen species. Using the same photocatalyst, by deactivation of photogenerated H2 O2 , benzaldehyde was obtained with over 99 % conversion and over 99 % selectivity as a single product. The highly challenging and sensitive epoxidation of styrene was carried out by creating peroxymonocarbonate as an initial epoxidation agent in the presence of bicarbonate, which led to formation of styrene oxide with a selectivity up to 76 % with near quantitative conversion. This study demonstrates a preliminary yet interesting example for simple control over switchable product formation selectivity for challenging oxidation reactions of organic compounds in pure water.
