Abstract:We compare polarized neutron reflectometry, non-polarized neutron reflectometry, and x-ray reflectometry for pure, magnetically polarized, air-passivated iron. Magnetism in the underlying metal enhances contrast with the surface oxide leading to precise magnetic and composition profiles of the oxide layer. The native passive film is a uniform, fully dense, non-ferromagnetic oxide with an average thickness of 31.9 +/- 0.7 & Aring;. Non-polarized neutron reflectometry gives substantial errors in the inferred interfacial profiles.
