Abstract:Mustard gas or sulfur mustard (SM) is commonly used as a chemical warfare agent (CWA) and has also been used as an alkylating substance with carcinogenic potential. It is important to develop a simple, rapid and low-cost detection method for sulfur mustard. In this paper, we developed a prefluorescent probe, 7-(diethylamino)-4-thioxo-4 H-chromene-3-carbonitrile (7-ATCC), which is very stable in air and can generate in situ an active sensing species to sulfur mustard and its simulant, half sulfur mustard (CEES), in ethanol, giving a turn-on fluorescence response. The sensing mechanism was well demonstrated by full characterization of both the sensing product and the active intermediate as a real probe. The sensing system of 7-ATCC can rapidly sense SM and CEES with high sensitivity (limit of detection, 0.28 mu M for CEES and 0.20 mu M for SM) and high selectivity. In addition, the detection of soil and surface contaminated with CEES can be achieved within 1 min at 60 degrees C. Furthermore, potable test strips for SM and CEES were prepared by soaking filter paper or a thin layer chro-matographic (TLC) plate with 7-ATCC ethanol solution with KOH for the detection of CEES in both solution and the gas phase with good sensitivity and excellent selectivity. Therefore, the prefluorescent probe 7-ATCC is a good candidate for the practical application of mustard gas detection.
