Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) performs poorly in the three-dimensional (3-D) topology reconstruction of high-reflective surfaces. The missing points are inevitable in the high-reflective regions in the point clouds reconstructed by the FPP. The existing research on the high-reflective problems cannot ensure the accuracy and efficiency of the reconstruction simultaneously. The photometric stereo (PS) technique is introduced into the system to provide additional normal information to solve the problem in this paper. The point clouds measured by the FPP sensor and the normal data measured by the PS sensor are combined into the multi-modality data. The fusion method is formulated as an optimization problem based on two constraints, i.e., the position constraint estimated by the point clouds and the direction constraint estimated by the normal data. Different values of the weight factor are specially designed in the optimization to deal with the constraint reliability difference in the high-reflective regions and the other regions. Not only the missing points in high-reflective regions are complementally reconstructed through the proposed fusion method, but also the accuracy of the reconstructed topology is optimized due to the introduction of the high-accuracy normal data. In addition, the proposed method only needs measuring once without repeated parameter adjustment or any human intervention, which improves the reconstruction efficiency. In the experiment of reconstructing a metal free-form surface, the deviation of the topology error between the proposed fusion method and a coordinate measuring machine is only 10 µm.
