Abstract:Efficient and durable methanol electro-oxidation catalysts in acidic media are essential for commercial applications of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). In this work, PtCu nanoparticle is prepared by the wet chemical method for the oxidation reaction of DMFC. The combination of Cu and Pt can well adjust the electronic structure of the catalyst and oxidize COads at a lower potential. Electrochemical tests show that PtCu nanoparticle has excellent catalytic activity for methanol oxidation, and its peak current is up to 1010.41 mA·mgPt-1, which is 3.1 times higher than that of commercial catalyst Pt/C. In addition, the synthesis steps are simple, and the catalyst prepared by this method has high activity and stability, thus creating conditions for realizing industrialized preparation.

Abstract:Bimetallic Pt-based nanodendrites are of particular interest in various catalytic applications due to their high surface areas and low densities. Herein, we provide a facile method for one-pot synthesis of PtRu nanodendrites via the co-reduction of Pt and Ru precursors in oleylamine by H2. The as-fabricated PtRu nanodendrites exhibit superior catalytic activity and durability compared with PtRu nanocrystals (NCs), synthesized under the same reaction conditions, and the commercial Pt/C catalyst towards the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR).

Abstract:Developing an efficient Pt-based multimetallic electrocatalyst with well-defined shapes for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is critical, however, it still remains challenging. Here we report a one-pot approach for the synthesis of ternary PtPdCu alloy hexapods with different compositions. Their MOR activities increased in the sequence Pt2PdCu4 < Pt3PdCu4 < Pt5PdCu5, and were substantially higher than that of commercial Pt/C. Specifically, the Pt5PdCu5 hexapods exhibited the highest mass (0.97 mA μgPt -1) and specific (7.39 mA cm-2) activities towards MOR, and were 5.4 and 19.4 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C (0.18 mA μgPt -1 and 0.38 mA cm-2), respectively. This enhancement could be probably attributed to the bifunctional mechanism and ligand effect through the addition of Cu and Pd as well as the unique dendritic structure. The better tolerance for CO poisoning also endowed the PtPdCu hexapods with superior durability relative to commercial Pt/C.
Facile Synthesis of Ptcu3 Alloy Hexapods and Hollow Nanoframes As Highly Active Electrocatalysts for Methanol Oxidation

Abstract:PtCu alloy nanocrystals, especially for the PtCu3 component, hold great potential as catalysts in methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) owing to their promising catalytic properties arising from the bifunctional mechanism associated with Pt and Cu sites. However, Pt and Cu salt precursors are difficult to be co-reduced in a synthesis due to the large difference in their redox potential, because of which Pt or Cu nanocrystals are initially generated and then evolve into a PtCu alloy with remarkable variation of the PtCu component by underpotential deposition (UPD) and galvanic replacement, respectively. Here we report a facile method for the shape-controlled synthesis of PtCu3 alloy nanocrystals by co-reduction of Pt and Cu salt precursors using oleylamine (OAm) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as co-reducing agents at different temperatures. PtCu3 alloy hexapods with preferential overgrowth along the <100> direction are obtained at 220 degrees C through co-reduction reaction accompanied by Cl- ion induced underpotential deposition (UPD). Meanwhile, galvanic replacement between PtCu3 alloy nanocrystals and the Pt precursor co-exists with overgrowth induced by co-reduction reaction at 190 degrees C, eventually resulting in PtCu3 hollow nanoframes. Both the PtCu3 alloy hexapods and hollow nanoframes exhibit remarkably enhanced catalytic properties in terms of activity and stability towards MOR relative to the commercial Pt/C. Specifically, the PtCu3 alloy hexapods and hollow nanoframes show the highest specific (2.96 mA cm(-2)) activity and mass activity (1.861 mA mu g(Pt)(-1)) for MOR, respectively, which are 13.5 and 24.2 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. This enhancement can be attributed to their unique structures and the possible bifunctional mechanism between Pt and Cu.

Abstract:Creating synergetic metal-oxide interfaces is a promising strategy to promote the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts. However, this strategy has been mainly applied to monometallic catalysts, while scarcely applied to alloy catalysts. In this work, we present a comprehensive study on the synergetic alloy-oxide interfaces in the bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalysts for CO oxidation. A series of Pt1Cox/Al2O3 catalysts with various Co/Pt molar ratios with x ranging from 0.5 to 3.8 was synthesized via a facile wet-chemistry strategy. Among them, the Pt1Co0.5/Al2O3 catalyst exhibits the best catalytic performance for CO oxidation, with the lowest CO complete conversion temperature of -10 °C and the highest mass specific rate of 2.61 (mol CO) h-1 (g Pt)-1. From in situ X-ray absorption fine structure and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy studies, the superior catalytic performance of Pt1Co0.5/Al2O3 originates from the optimal length of the three-dimensional alloy-oxide perimeter sites. We further extended this strategy to other bimetallic systems of Pt-Fe and Pt-Ni, which also show similar structural properties and remarkable promotional effects on the catalytic activity.

Abstract:CuPt nanodendrites have special electrocatalytic performance due to their unique morphologies and structures. In this work, we report a facile and one-pot synthesis of highly branched and dispersed CuPt nanodendrites with a size of about 22 nm and Pt/Cu ratio of 2 : 1. X-ray photoelectron spectra indicate a Pt-rich surface of the prepared CuPt nanodendrites. The combination of a highly branched structure with a Pt-rich shell would be very beneficial for catalytic properties, which was confirmed by electrochemical tests towards MOR. A systematic study on morphology evolution of the products and understanding of their growth mechanism was carried out using the effects of reaction time and reducing agents.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysts with single-atom active sites offer a means of expanding the industrial application of noble metal catalysts. Herein, an atomically dispersed Pt-1-Co3O4 catalyst is presented, which exhibits an exceptionally high efficiency for the total oxidation of methanol. Experimental and theoretical investigations indicate that this catalyst consists of Pt sites with a large proportion of occupied high electronic states. These sites possess a strong affinity for inactive Co2+ sites and anchor over the surface of (111) crystal plane, which increases the metal-support interaction of the Pt-1-Co3O4 material and accelerates the rate of oxygen vacancies regeneration. In turn, this is determined to promote the coadsorption of the probe methanol molecule and O-2. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the electron transfer over the oxygen vacancies reduces both the methanol adsorption energy and activation barriers for methanol oxidation, which is proposed to significantly enhance the dissociation of the C-H bond in the methanol decomposition reaction. This investigation serves as a solid foundation for characterizing and understanding single-atom catalysts for heterogeneous oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Platinum based alloys are hereinto the mostly used methanol oxidation catalysts. However, there are limited ways to improve the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) performance of catalysts in terms of both activity and stability. Herein we developed a simple heat-treatment method to synthesize PtCu3/C intermetallic compound catalyst with lattice compression. The as-prepared PtCu3/C-1000 exhibited high specific activity of 3.23 mA·cm−1 and mass activity of 1,200 mA·mgPt−1, which is much higher than the PtCu3/C-untreated and commercial Pt/C catalysts, respectively. The XAS and DFT results shows the high activity of the catalyst towards MOR comes from the tightening of the Pt-M bond, which leads to the decrease of Fermi energy level and the make it difficulty in adsorbing carbon intermediates, thus releasing more active sites to promote the improvement of MOR performance. Moreover, the PtCu3/C-1000 shows better stability which is due to the surface-rich Pt prevents Cu from dissolution.

Abstract:The high expense, poor stability, and low abundance of Platinum (Pt) catalysts on earth greatly handicapped its further application. Alloying Pt with other metals is an idea alternate, however, as a promising catalyst aims to be large-scaled synthesized, one important goal is that the morphologies and electrocatalytic activities can maintain the same, even the precursor ratio was varied, in addition, according to the Le Chatellier's principle as more earth-abundant precursors were used can accelerate the transforming efficiency of noble metal during the synthesis. Unfortunately, no current research has reached this goal, we herein report a facile two-step method for the synthesis of three-dimensional CuPt alloys via galvanic replacement between the noble Pt precursor and pre-synthesized Copper (Cu) nanocubes in a liquid system free of capping agent, further investigation proved that the morphologies can be regulated via changing the reaction temperature, while the composition of precursors does not affect the morphologies evolutions match well with the industrial demand. The CuPt alloys obtained at 80 o C (denoted as CuPt-80) exhibited a superior activities towards both HER and MOR reaction when compared with CuPt-60, CuPt-100, Pt nanocrystals (Pt NCs) and 20% Pt/C. This work enriched the application of Le Chatellier's principle and provides a promising way for the rational design and synthesis of efficient and robust catalysts for sustainable energy conversion.

Abstract:The development of highly active and stable catalysts is a critical challenge which affects the practical application of the direct methanol fuel cells. Alloying Pt with other metals is an effective strategy to form the bimetallic or trimetallic catalysts, which not only decreases the consumption of Pt but also optimizes the electronic structure of Pt, in turn enhancing the catalytic activity. Herein, we use a facile one-pot solvothermal reduction method to synthesize Ag nanocubes (NCs) enclosed by PtRh nanoparticles as a trimetallic Ag@PtRhAg NC core-shell catalyst toward methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Notably, the core-shell structure is formed because of the presence of N,N-dimethylacetamide, which promotes the preferential reduction of Ag by reducing the reduction potential of Ag atoms. Meanwhile, the bromide ions originating from cetyltrimethylammonium bromide controlled the growth of the cubic morphology. Benefiting from the pleated exterior providing more active sites and the synergistic effect between Pt, Rh, and Ag, the mass and specific activities of Ag@PtRhAg NCs are 4.22 and 3.78 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. More impressively, because of the better CO tolerance, Ag@PtRhAg NCs display strengthened durability by maintaining 84.9% mass activity after 1000 MOR cycles compared to the initial value. The present work provides a one-step strategy to synthesize a core-shell nanostructure catalyst for enhancing the MOR activity.

Abstract:A green synthetic strategy is developed to prepare PtxCuy/C catalyst in the absence of any capping ligands. Commercial Pt/C catalyst is used as the platinum precursor, and the Pt nanoparticles on the carbon act as a catalyst for the reduction of copper (II) precursors by hydrazine, which leads to the confined deposition of Cu on the Pt nanoparticles. The newly deposited Cu diffuses into the Pt nanoparticles to form PtxCuy alloy nanoparticles under hydrothermal conditions. The as-synthesized PtxCuy/C exhibits superior activity compared with commercial Pt/C towards the electro-oxidation of methanol. The results highlight the significance of alloy formation as an approach to improve the activity of commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Abstract:Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to the exploration of cost-effective, active, and stable electrochemical catalysts, quite few significant breakthroughs have been achieved up to now. Therefore, exploring new catalysts, improving catalyst activity and stability are still major tasks at present. Controllable synthesis of Pt-based alloy nanocrystals with uniform high-index surface and unique architecture has been regarded as an effective strategy to optimize their catalytic efficiency toward electrochemical reaction. Accordingly, here we present a one-pot facile solvothermal process to synthesize novel unique Cu@CuPt core-shell concave octahedron nanocrystals which exhibit both outstanding activity and long durability. By regulating temperatures during the synthesis process, we were able to control the reduction rate of Cu and Pt ions, which could subsequently lead to the sequential stack of Cu and Pt atoms. Owing to the concave structure, the as-prepared core-shell nanoparticles hold high-index surface of {312} and {413}. Such surfaces can provide high density of atomic steps and terraces, which are suggested to be favourable for electrochemical catalyst. Specifically, the Cu@CuPt core-shell concave octahedron present 8.6/13.1 times enhanced specific/mass activities toward methanol oxidation reaction in comparison to commercial Pt/C catalyst, respectively. Meanwhile, the as-prepared catalyst exhibits superior durability and anti-aggregation properties under harsh electrochemical condition. The facile method used here proposes a novel idea to the fabrication of nanocrystals with desired compositional distribution and the as-prepared product offers exciting opportunities to be applied in Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs).

Abstract:Identifying the active sites of catalysts under working conditions is crucial for precise understanding of reaction mechanisms and rational design of catalysts. However, the nature of active sites of bimetallic catalysts for CO oxidation is still a subject of debate. Herein, we employ in situ X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopy to monitor the realistic structures of active centers in a bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalyst during CO oxidation. This catalyst brings 100% CO conversion at room temperature and 30-fold higher turnover frequency than monometallic Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. The in situ studies reveal that under the CO oxidation condition, a fraction of Co atoms are segregated from the PtCo alloy into the surface CoO species that decorates the remaining PtCo nanoparticles through direct Pt-O-Co interfacial bonds. The bond-valence analysis unravels one dangling Co-O coordination per Co2+ in the surface CoO, which acts as the active sites for O-2 activation. The synergy between the CoO species and the PtCo alloy brings the superior catalytic activity. We also show that the directly connected Pt-O-Co interface is more beneficial to the catalytic performance than the unconnected Pt-CoO interface and provides a promising strategy toward the design of advanced catalysts for the redox reaction.
Methanol Electro-Oxidation on Cu@Pt/C Core-Shell Catalyst Derived from Cu-MOF

Abstract:Core-shell structured Cu@Pt/C catalyst was fabricated by a simple three-step procedure involving hydrothermal synthesis of copper-centered metal organic framework (Cu-MOF), carbon-supported copper nanoparticles (Cu/C) by direct carbonization at 600 degrees C and partial galvanic replacement of Cu particle layers by Pt in a chloroplatinate solution. The characterization of Cu@Pt/C catalyst is achieved by XRD (X-ray powder diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and voltammetry techniques. Cu@Pt/C catalyst has shown much larger electrochemical active surface area (ECSA, 74.3 m(2).g(-1)) than commercial Pt/C catalyst (50.4 m(2).g(-1)). Furthermore, nearly four-fold enhancement of activity of Cu@Pt/C catalyst for methanol oxidation has been observed. Moreover, the charge transfer resistance of methanol oxidation for Cu@Pt/C catalyst is 22.8 Omega cm(-2), lower than that for Pt/C catalyst (73.7 Omega cm(-2)). Additionally, Cu@Pt/C catalyst exhibits a superior catalytic stability. The electronic effect modification and large ECSA may be collectively responsible for the enhanced catalytic activity of Cu@Pt/C over Pt/C.
Synthetic Pt-Fe(OH) x catalysts by one-pot method for CO catalytic oxidation

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation is used to control carbon monoxide (CO) emissions from industrial exhaust. In this work, The prepared Pta-Fe(OH) x catalysts (x represents the mass fraction of Pt loading (%), a = 0.5, 1 and 2) by the one-pot reduction method exhibited excellent CO catalytic activity, with the Pt2-Fe(OH) x catalyst, 70% and ∼100% CO conversion was achieved at 30°C and 60°C, respectively. In addition, the Pt2-Fe(OH) x catalyst also showed excellent H2O resistance and hydrothermal stability in comparison to the Pt2/Fe(OH) x catalyst prepared by impregnation method. Characterization results showed that the excellent catalytic performance of the catalysts was mainly attributed to the abundant surface oxygen species and Pt0 the presence of H2O, which promoted the catalytic reaction of CO, and Density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that this was mainly attributed to the catalytic activity of the hydroxyl (-OH) species on Pt2-Fe(OH) x surface, which could easily oxidize CO to -COOH, which could be further decomposed into CO2 and H atoms. This study provides valuable insights into the design of high-efficiency non-precious metal catalysts for CO catalytic oxidation catalysts with high efficiency.

Abstract:The alloyed PtRu/C,core-shell Ru@Pt/C and Pt/C nanocomposite catalysts in similar diameter with different Pt/Ru atomic ratios were synthesized by chemical reduction meth-od.Physical characterization and electrochemical characterization results show that the diameter of Ru@Pt/C,PtRu/C nano-metal particles is about 9~1 1 nm,and Ru@Pt/C in core-shell struc-ture.The mechanism of Ru@Pt/C electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol meets the electronic effect mechanism,the mechanism of PtRu/C is consistent with the electronic effect and the bi-functional mechanism.The clarification of the catalytic mechanism provides a solid theoretical ba-sis for the development of new catalysts.

The Structural properties of obtained Pt/graphene-TiO2 catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).Interesting, TEM presents Pt nanoparticles seem preferentially to locate between TiO2 and graphene, forming the unique triple junctions structure. The electrochemical experimental results indicate that Pt/graphene-TiO2 catalyst exhibits 1.46 times higher activity for methanol electrooxidation than that of Pt/graphene and its stability is improved by 15% as compared with Pt/graphene. Moreover, performance of Pt/graphene-TiO2 hybrid catalyst is evaluated by the Single Fuel Cell Tests for the first time. Single fuel cell tests show the maximum power density of the direct methanol fuel cell using Pt/graphene-TiO2 as the anode catalyst is increased by 55% compared with that using Pt/graphene catalyst at the same operating conditions. The significantly enhanced electrochemical performance can be ascribed to (1) the synergetic effect between Pt, graphene and TiO2; (2) strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Pt nanoparticles and TiO2. These findings suggest their great potential applications in fuel cells.
Deep Eutectic Solvent-Assisted Synthesis of Highly Efficient PtCu Alloy Nanoclusters on Carbon Nanotubes for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents are promising in the green synthesis of advanced functional materials owing to their several distinct advantages including good solubility, wide electrochemical window, high conductivity, low cost, nontoxicity and tolerance to humidity. Herein, we report a novel green protocol to design the hybrid PtCu nanoclusters on multi-walled carbon nanotubes in deep eutectic solvents medium without adding any surface controlling agent. Subsequently, the structure, elemental composition and electrocatalytic aspects of the as-synthesized nanohybrids are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic features and electrochemical investigations. Typically, the synthesis medium plays a key role to control the dispersion of Pt-based nanoparticles and to enhance the electronic transfer interaction among the catalytic nanoparticles and support material. On other hand, the addition of alloyed Cu not only further decreases the crystallite size of catalytic particles but also results in the formation of cluster nanostructure with the coarse surface. Moreover, the methanol oxidation electrocatalytic activity of the as-fabricated material is clearly composition dependent, their maximum mass activity (Pt/Cu mass ratio 1:0.25) is about 2.5 times that of the carbon nanotubes-supported monometallic Pt catalyst. And it also presents the good CO-tolerance ability and evident long-term electrochemical durability. This study suggests that the synthesis strategy in deep eutectic solvents is of great importance to design and fabricate the high-performance electrocatalysts for fuel cells applications.
