Abstract:Surface waves (SWs) are eigen electromagnetic (EM) modes bounded at the surface of optical materials/devices, e.g., metals, semiconductors and dielectric waveguides. Distinct from another fundamental EM mode, i.e., propagating waves (PWs) in free-space, SWs possess the intriguing optical characteristics of subwavelength resolution and local-field enhancement, offering us numerous applications such as sub-diffraction imaging, optical sensor, plasmonic laser, on-chip plasmonic circuit, enhanced nonlinear optics. For the on-chip photonic applications, the far-field emissions of localized SWs in some plasmonic devices usually rely on Bragg devices, which however suffer from several fundamental limitations, including wavelength-scale manipulations, multiple mode generation, lack of control abilities for radiation amplitude, phase and polarization.
