Abstract:The demand for high-performance carbon-free energy storage systems has fueled extensive research in battery technology. In the current era of technological revolution rechargeable Magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) are renowned energy storage devices due to their high energy density, long lifecycle and good rate-capability. Despite remarkable successes, the research efforts to improve the performance of MIBs are still at the heart of research related to energy devices. Employing density functional theory (DFT) computations the feasibility of A l 2 CO bilayer as anode material for MIBs is predicated. The optimum-anodic nature of the A l 2 CO bilayer is explored based on its structural, electronic, diffusion and storage properties. The adsorption sites for Mg atoms within the host bilayer were systematically explored. The reaction of Mg with A l 2 CO was found exothermic till 5 Mg, which points out the suitability for the magnesiation process in MIBs. Similar calculations carried out in the case of lithium intercalation in the host bilayers revealed endothermic reactions which revealed the unsuitability of the material for use as an anode in lithium-ion batteries. The calculated value of storage capacity for A l 2 CO bilayer is 1634.73 mAhg − 1 , which is greater than the commercially available anode materials i.e. twin graphene Graphite, Metallic Magnesium and MXenes. The voltage profile study reveals a favorable open circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.89–0.17 V. The diffusion barrier faced by the magnesium while moving along layers is calculated by climbing image nudged elastic band (Cl-NEB) simulations with a minimal value of 0.71 eV, when it follows a path along the x-axis and z-axis. The low diffusion barrier will facilitate the magnesium to move quickly, pointing out the fast charging capability of the battery when A l 2 CO is used as an anode. The calculated value of diffusion coefficient at 300 K is 7.5 × 10−10 m2/s and ionic conductivity σ is 14.8 × 10−3 S/m, which suggests the excellent overall performance of the proposed bilayer as an anode in MIBs.
