Abstract:High speed steels (HSS) have been widely used worldwide. This paper introduced some research results of high speed steels via Powder Metallurgy process. High speed steels AHPT15 (W12Cr4V5Co5 ) were investigated via gas atomization, hot isostatic pressing, hot working and heat treatment processes. Microstructure of the steels, precipitation of carbides and the influence of nonmetallic inclusions on mechanical properties of the steels were investigated. PM HSS showed fine and uniform microstructure and exhibited excellent toughness and wear resistance, with bend strength up to 3500 MPa and hardness up to 68.0 HRC.

Abstract:Structural steel has been used in construction in the United States for more than 100 years, starting with the Eads Bridge in St. Louis (1867–1874). The material and its many products have undergone significant changes since the initial applications. Some of these were prompted by demands for higher strength and improved economies of construction, and many were caused by developments in joining techniques and fabrication. Increasingly complicated and demanding service and other environmental conditions have also been important. A brief review of some early steel developments is presented, but the major focus of the paper is today’s requirements for high performance steels, including the properties of tensile strength and stiffness, ductility, toughness, weldability and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:High strength steel structures have many advantages and have been applied in many buildings and bridges in the world.To comprehend the mechanical performance and research progress of this new green structures and provide the guidance for further related studies,the engineering applications were introduced briefly,and the recent researches were reviewed,including the high strength steel static material performance and that under cyclic loadings,toughness,sectional residual stress,buckling and hysteretic behavior of high strength steel columns,the ductility and resistance of bolted connections with high strength steel slices,the seismic performance of high strength steel frames,and the finite element analysis(FEA),especially with recent experimental studies conducted in Tsinghua University.All the results showed that high strength steel materials,members and structural systems had obvious superiority,but there were few reasonable design methods in current design specifications in the world.In order to make the application of high strength steel structures safe and more reasonable,new design theory and calculation formulae would be urgently needed.

Abstract:High strength steel structures have been increasingly used in the world. In China, more and more building structures began to apply 420MPa and 460MPa high strength steels, and some experimental and theoretical investigations were carried out. In this paper, recent engineering application and researches on high strength steel structures in China were reviewed, particularly the current research works in Tsinghua University, including the residual stress distribution of 420MPa steel welded round tube and column buckling behavior of the compression members, the residual stress test of 960MPa high strength steel welded I and box sections, the overall and local budding behavior of 960MPa steel compression columns, and the behaivor of high strength steel plate shear connection. It was found that high strength steel structures had significant advantages in the mechanical performance and also some new features. This review could provide valuable information for further researches and design method of high strength steel structures.

Abstract:Structures made using high-strength steel (HSS) offer numerous benefits in terms of mechanical performance, economy and sustainability. With such structures increasingly being used in practice, academia in civil engineering is progressively focusing on HSS structures through experimental, numerical and theoretical investigations. This paper reviews research advances in HSS structures at the level of material properties, the behaviour of component members and connections and the performance of frame structures, and the corresponding findings are summarised and discussed. The literature indicates that, compared with structures made with conventional mild steel, HSS structures exhibit new features in terms of mechanical performance. It is hoped that this review will be helpful in providing a better understanding of the mechanism of HSS structures subjected to static or cyclic loading and promoting their practical application.

Abstract:Many types of steel railway bridges—including composite girders, truss bridges, and arch bridges—have been constructed for the Shinkansen high-speed rail in Japan. Recently, the selection of both the structural type of bridge and the bridge's method of erection became more important. In this paper, first the concept of selecting the type of bridge and erection methods according to the surrounding conditions is discussed. Then an example of the latest construction, Matsubara Bridge in Kyushu Shinkansen, is described. This 1,243-m-long bridge is the longest over-bridge across rail track in Japan. Moreover, the construction site was located in a densely populated area and the existing rail was very busy. With those severe conditions overcome with state-of-the-art bridge erection techniques, construction was completed smoothly.

Abstract:High strength steel (HSS) with the nominal yield strength f y ≥460 MPa has been applied in numerous modern building and bridge structures all over the world. Steel structures using high strength steel have obvious advantages in structural, architectural, economical, environment protection and energy saving aspects. After a brief introduction of early studies, recent research advances of high strength steel structures in Tsinghua University in China are comprehensively reviewed. Systematic investigations have been carried out on static- and cyclic-loading behavior of high strength steels and their welded connections, residual stress of high strength steel hot-rolled and welded sections, overall and local buckling behavior of high strength steel columns under axial compression, seismic behavior of high strength steel columns under combined bending and compression, bearing and slip resistance of bolted connections with high strength steel slices. The research results show that mechanical behavior of high strength steel structures has been improved much compared with ordinary strength steel structures, so the design methods in current design codes or specifications need be updated to be applicable to high strength steel structures. Therefore, as the chief-editor institute, Tsinghua University has organized 34 institutes including universities, design and research institutes, steel structure fabricators, and steel manufacturers, to codify a new code, i.e. Design Specification of High Strength Steel Structures in China. Based on the above research results, new design methods and calculation formulae applicable to high strength steel structures are incorporated into this design specification. The outline of this specification is discussed in detail in this paper.

Abstract:The excellent properties of high strength steel (HSS) and high performance steel (HPS) with higher strength, higher ductility, higher facture toughness, better weldability, better machinability, as well as better corrosion resistance and fire resistance, can improve the structural performance significantly. More HSS and HPS have been applied to tall and large-span buildings as well as highway bridges. The new development in building structures requires steel industry to provide more efficient structural steel to meet the demand on material properties. The HPS of grade Q460 has been successfully applied in the National Stadium and CCTV tower in China. The benefits and advantages in fabrication and construction cost were demonstrated remarkably. However, inadequate design guidance is available to help engineers apply HSS and HPS with confidence. This paper reviews the recent development and application of HSS and HPS in tall and large span buildings. The advances on research progress of HSS and HPS for buildings were summarized. Further development on design methods and theory of applying HSS and HPS in buildings are proposed.

Abstract:Abstract The use of high strength steel has the potential to reduce the amount of steel used in bridges and thereby, facilitate a more sustainable construction. A survey of existing bridges built using high strength steel is presented in this paper with emphasis on the Swedish bridge stock. The survey aimed at identifying the steel grades that were used and where in the cross-section they have been used. A case study on the influence of fatigue shows that today’s regulations make it more difficult to use high strength steel in comparison to previous regulations.

Abstract:With structural steel becoming the main construction material in China, more high performance steel (HPS) is going to be applied in landmark building projects. Innovative structural systems and structural members need to be envisaged to take the advantages of HPS. The excellent properties of HPS with higher strength, moderate ductility, higher fracture toughness, better weldability, efficient machinability, can improve the structural performance significantly. The Q460 grade of structural steel has been successfully applied in the National Stadium and CCTV tower in China. It is demonstrated that the fabrication and construction efficiency of steel buildings can be improved remarkably, and economical solutions are provided by using HPS. This paper reviewed the availability of HPS in China and summarized the recent development to promote HPS in tall and large span buildings. The requirements on research to support the application of HPS in buildings are discussed.

Abstract:This paper firstly presents the latest development of high strength/performance structural materials in recent years. The rational applications and examples of high strength/performance structural materials in the structural systems to obtain high performance are discussed and presented. The positive functions of high strength reinforcement used in reinforced concrete frame structures, that can enhance the structural performance against earthquake and reduce the structural seismic damage, are investigated in detail with nonlinear pushover analysis and dynamic analysis. The results show that the high seismic performance of the reinforced concrete frames, including a delayed appearance of plastic hinges at the bottom story columns feet, to form a rational failure mechanism under strong earthquake, and a small. residual. displacement after earthquake that cause an easy retrofitting after earthquake, can be obtained by replacing normal strength reinforcement with high strength reinforcement in the columns. Finally, the development of the safety and design theory for the structures using high strength/performance materials are discussed.

Abstract:The rational utilization of steel is essential to leverage the respective advantages of high-strength steel (HSS) and conventional steel. HSS, with nominal yield strength >= 460 MPa, has gained wide application in bridge and building structures due to its significant economic and structural benefits. The authors have conducted extensive research on high-strength steel materials, beam-columns, connections, and structural systems. This paper serves as a follow-up study to further explore the seismic performance and reliable seismic design of high-strength steel moment frames. Firstly, this paper reviewed the cyclic tests conducted on six full-scale one-bay two-story steel moment frames made of HSS and conventional steel. Subsequently, fifteen six-story prototype frames with different combinations of steel grades and cross-sectional ductility classes were designed. Nonlinear static analysis and increment dynamic analysis (IDA), performed using validated multi-scale finite element models, were conducted to comprehensively investigate the effects of steel grades and member cross-section ductility classes on seismic performance factors and deformation demands during maximum considered earthquake. The research findings indicate that the reduction factor R decreases with increasing yield strength of the steel, implying that HSS frames may need to withstand greater seismic forces. All calculated reduction factors R are higher than the code-specified values, indicating the safety of HSS moment frames designed according to the current code.

Abstract:The advantages and disadvantages of high strength steel as well as its application in the domestic and foreign construction engineering and bridge engineering were briefly described , as well as a number of practical engineering problems analyzed.Summing up the related research of domestic and foreign high strength steels and their welds on their brittle fracture and fatigue , the article raised the need for study on the fracture toughness and fatigue performance of high strength steel used in construction and its connection weld and the change law of influence factor. Low temperature , weld defects , increasing thickness of steel and high-frequency dynamic load were found greatly reducing the resistance capacity of brittle fracture of high strength steel and fatigue life ; Other than these external factors , for mechanical properties and toughness due to special metallurgical processes , the application of high strength steel was limited.

Abstract:With the increased demands for prolonged life service of the superstructures, the durability of concrete erections is of great concern to the developers, and among the key factors that lead to concrete degradation, apparently, the corrosion is on the top list. The use of steel in such constructions have increased over time owing to a number of factors such as its lightweight, resistance to corrosion and the capacity to take any form. The use of stainless-steel reinforcements (SSRs) in the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has proved its essence and effectiveness in ensuring the durability of the superstructure erected in the marine environment. Despite its first use in Chinese Mainland, the stainless-steel reinforcements have been employed over years across the world.

Abstract:With the improvement of the steel production process,high strength and high performance steels have been developed.However,the development and engineering application of high strength steel structures were constrained as a result of the strict limit requirement on structural steel material properties according to most of the design codes,especially for the yield-tensile strength ratio(Y/T ratio).The production process and steel grade of high strength structural steels were introduced comprehensively,and the limit requirements in different steel structure design codes were reviewed,including those of Europe,North America,Australia,Japan and China,and the comparison for some important mechanical property indexes such as Y/T ratio and elongation after fracture was conducted.Besides,a large amount of tension coupon test data and research advances for high strength steels were arranged,the material property features were researched,and the stress-strain relationship model used for the numerical study was proposed.Results show that high strength structural steels have wonderful toughness but also larger Y/T ratio and lower elongation compared with those of ordinary strength steels,which may exceed most of the code limits,and this greatly constrains the application of such steel structures.Therefore,the relationship between the steel mechanical property and structure safety needs to be discussed and researched quantitatively,as well as whether the requirement in the design codes can be relaxed.It is helpful to comprehend the high strength steel material property and relevant code requirements,and to promote the high strength steel structure researches.It is useful for the engineering application and code revision.

Abstract:The composite steel–concrete rigid frame bridge is composed of steel or composite girders connecting rigidly to RC piers, and has advantages of lower maintenance costs, faster construction, and higher resistance and ductility during an earthquake. In this paper, a new type of steel–concrete composite rigid connection is developed and studied by finite element analysis. The comparison with other types of connections shows that this new type of connection has a good structural performance from the confining of concrete by steel and preventing the buckling of steel by concrete.

Abstract:Owing to the advantages in economy, environmental protection and energy efficiency, high-strength steel (HSS) has represented an important trend in the development of steel structures and has been adopted in numerous building and bridge structures. This article summarizes engineering applications for HSS structures and comprehensively reviews the recent research advances in HSS structures at Tsinghua University. Investigations were conducted into the behaviour and performance of HSS materials, sections, members, connections and structural systems. Based on the research results, the mechanical behaviour of HSS structures could be improved compared with ordinary strength steel structures. In order to update the current design codes so that they are applicable for HSS structures, a new specification in China, the "Standard for Design of High-Strength Steel Structures", is undergoing codification, with Tsinghua University as the chief editorial institute. The outline of the specification, as well as the new design methods included in it, is introduced in this paper.

Abstract:Reinforced concrete (RC) bridges often face great demands of strengthening or repair during their service life. Fe-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMAs) as a kind of low-cost smart materials have great potential to enhance civil engineering structures. The stable shape memory effect of Fe-SMAs is generated by, taking Fe-Mn-Si alloys as an example, the martensite transformation of fcc(γ) → hcp(ε) and its reverse transformation which produces considerable recovery stress (400~500 MPa) that can be used as prestress for reinforcement of RC bridges. In this work, the mechanism, techniques, and applications of Fe-SMAs in the reinforcement of RC beams in the past two decades are classified and introduced in detail. Finally, some new perspectives on Fe-SMAs application in civil engineering and their expected evolution are proposed. This paper offers an effective active rehabilitation alternative for the traditional passive strengthening method of RC bridges.
