Abstract:We read with great interest the recent European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) concise guidance on clinical nutrition in COVID-19 patients, with regard to those in the ICU setting or in the presence of 70 older age and polymorbidity [1Barazzoni R. The guidance included 10 practical recommendations, which were based on current ESPEN guidelines and further expert advice. This is a timely and excellent work and the authors should be congratulated. However, we have one but possible very important issue concerning the disease that the guidance focused on. In the present guidance, the term SARS-CoV-2 appeared several times, but its detailed information, especially the relationship with COVID-19 was not stated, and this may easily cause confusion among readers, what is SARS-CoV-2, whether COVID-19 is induced by SARS-CoV-2, or it is another new coronavirus virus. In fact, the term SARS-CoV-2 was used to name the novel coronavirus virus that induced COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, which was proposed by the Coronavirus Study Group of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses [2Gorbalenya A.E. Baker S.C. Baric R.S. de Groot R.J. Drosten C. Therefore, to avoid the confusion above, more information about SARS-CoV-2 is necessary. We would welcome other comments as this would be helpful to better understand this practical guidance for nutritional management of COVID-19 patients.
