Abstract:Optical nonlinearities of two all-carbon twistacenes, DPyA and DPyN, with the different π-conjugated central bridges were investigated. The nonlinear absorption properties of these compounds were measured using the femtosecond Z-scan with wavelengths between 650 and 900 nm. It has been found that the nonlinear absorption originated from two-photon absorption (TPA) and TPA-induced excited state absorption (ESA), wherein DPyA demonstrates higher performance than DPyN. The TPA cross section of DPyA (4300 GM) is nearly 4.3 times larger than that of DPyN at 650 nm. Moreover, the different central structures modulate the intensity of ESA at 532 nm, and DPyA exhibits an excellent ESA at 532 nm with multi-pulse excitation. Meanwhile, the result of data fitting and quantum chemistry calculation shows that the enhancement of nonlinear absorption in DPyA is due to the extended π- conjugated bridge and improved delocalization of π-electrons. These all-carbon twistacenes could yield potential applications in optical power limiting (OPL) technology.

Abstract:Twistacene is an outstanding building block due to the large conjugated system. Herein, a series of twistacenes have been designed and synthesized with the assistant from a theoretical analysis based on the morphology of the natural transition orbitals of first excited state. These twistacenes exhibit two photon absorption and unique broadband excited singlet state absorption features, which is systematically confirmed by transient absorption spectra, two-photon excited fluorescence and z-scan experiments. The overlap of two-photon absorption band with excited state absorption band can improve the OL performance. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical prediction, which confirm the rationalization of molecular design strategy. The screened twistacene 5 exhibits excellent optical limiting behavior with extremely high transmittance and low threshold, where the threshold is 1.3-3.1 mJ/cm2 in a wide optical window from 532 nm to 900 nm in femtosecond regime and 69 mJ/cm2 in picosecond regime. The experimental results suggest twistacene is a promising candidate for nonlinear optical applications, especially for protection against ultrashort laser pulses.

Abstract:A novel two-branched twistacene (PyDN) has been designed and synthesized for application on ultrafast optical limiting. This twistacene exhibits excellent two photon absorption and two photon absorption-induced excited singlet state absorption, which was systematically investigated with a femtosecond Z-scan experiment, transient absorption spectrum, and two-photon excited fluorescence experiments. The admirable two photon absorption is attributed to the high degree of π electron delocalization in twistacene which is caused by introduction of two strong donors. The excited singlet state absorption cooperates with two-photon absorption to provide an excellent ultrafast optical limiting behavior with high linear transmittance, where the thresholds are 2.3–5.3 mJ/cm2 in the spectral region of 532–800 nm of femtosecond laser and 133 mJ/cm2 for picosecond pulse at 532 nm. These thresholds are lower than that of most of the optical limiters reported previously, which indicates PyDN is a promising candidate for ultrafast optical limiting.
Enhanced Reverse Saturable Absorption in Substituted Twistacenes from Visible to Near-Infrared: Modulation of Terminal Twisted Π-Conjugated Units

Abstract:Four substituted twistacenes decorated with different twisted Jrconjugated units are synthesized to investigate their structure-property relationship. To improve the nonlinear optical (NLO) response of these twistacenes, phenyl, naphthyl, anthryl, and pyrenyl are selected as the twisted units to gradually increase the population of pi-electrons. Broadband excited-state absorption (ESA) and reverse saturable absorption (RSA) of these compounds show a significant enhancement in femtosecond transient absorption spectra (TAS) and multiwavelength Z-scan experiments, respectively. The photophysical mechanism exhibits a typical feature of two-photon absorption (TPA)-induced ESA (TPA-ESA) on the singlet state. With the analysis of the electron transition calculated by the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), it can be inferred that TPA and ESA of these twistacenes are modulated by intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and local excitation (LE), respectively. The TPA cross sections of these twistacenes at 515 nm are dramatically enhanced from 214 to 534 GM by introducing ICT, while the ESA cross sections are significantly increased from 1.2 X 10(-21) to 6.5 X 10(-21) m(2) at 690 nm via strengthening LE with the pi-pi* feature. The result indicates that not only can TPA and ESA be enhanced simultaneously but also the selective modulation of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties can be achieved in such kinds of compounds.

Abstract:End-substituted planar and twisted isomers (C1 and C2) of pyrene-containing twistacenes were designed and synthesized to investigate the modulation of ectopic substitution on nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. Results of ultrafast transient absorption spectra reveal that C1 exhibits broad-band excited state absorption (ESA), meanwhile C2 displays an additional electronic delocalized state due to charge transfer. The twisted structure caused by large steric hindrance in C2 is thought to be the cause of enhancement according to the density functional theory calculation. Moreover, the evolution of ESA regarding the transition from local excited (LE) to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state is observed in the transient spectra. The performance of reverse saturable absorption at 480 nm, 5 ns, is improved by ESA originating from ICT in C2. The extension of It -con-jugated system results in a significant enhancement of the two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-section of C1/ toluene from 235 to 737 GM at 532 nm. With different substitution positions of terminal group in isomers, TPA and ESA of these chromophores can be dramatically modulated. This work may provide an idea for the opti-mization of nonlinear functional isomeric materials.

Abstract:Two different lengths of twistacenes, namely hexatwistacene and decatwistacene induced by the steric-hindrance effect between imide groups and neighbouring annulated benzene rings, were synthesized via bottom-up synthesis of palladium-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling and C-H activation reaction. Single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed that decatwistacene, which is the longest twistacene reported until now, exhibits an astonishing overall end-to-end torsion angle of about 170, the largest torsion angle reported so far. Both twistacenes have an enhanced solubility and stability with respect to light and oxygen due to their large twisting deformations together with much lower LUMO levels caused by the introduction of imide groups, opening a window to the narrowest chiral graphene nanoribbons with good stability and processability.

Abstract:Spindle-type molecules containing twisted acenes (PyBTA-1 & PyBTA-2) are designed, synthesized characterized. Picosecond Z-scan experiments under 532 nm show reverse saturable absorption and negative nonlinear refraction, indicating large third-order optical nonlinearity in PyBTA-1. The mechanism of the optical nonlinearity is investigated and the results show that the nonlinear absorption and refraction in PyBTA-1 originates from a charge transfer (CT) state. Furthermore, relatively long lifetime and absorptive cross section of the CT state are measured. Based on the excited state absorption in PyBTA-1, strong optical limiting with similar to 0.3 J/cm(2) thresholds are obtained when excited by picoseconds and nanoseconds pulses. The findings on nonlinear optics suggest PyBTA-1 a promising material of all optical modulation and laser protection, which enrich the potential applications of these spindle-type molecules. Comparing to the previously reported spindle-type molecules with analogous structures, the introduction of ICT in PyBTA-1 & PyBTA-2 dramatically decreases the two-photon absorption while enhances the nonlinear refraction. Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on through-space donor and acceptor interactions constitute a recent and promising approach to develop efficient TADF emitters. Novel TADF isomers using a dithia[3.3]-paracyclophane building block as a versatile 3D platform to promote through-space interactions are presented. Such a 3D platform allows to bring together the D and A units into close proximity and to probe the effect of their orientation, contact site and distance on their TADF emission properties. This study provides evidence that the dithia[3.3]paracyclophane core is a promising platform to control intramolecular through-space interactions and obtain an efficient TADF emission with short reverse-intersystem crossing (RISC) lifetimes. In addition, this study demonstrates that this design can tune the energy levels of the triplet states and leads to an upconversion from (CT)-C-3 to (LE)-L-3 that promotes faster and more efficient RISC to the (CT)-C-1 singlet state.

Abstract:Organic materials with large nonlinear optical coefficient and ultrafast response speed have attracted consid-erable attention due to their potential applications in optical limiting (OL). However, it is a challenging obstacle to develop a candidate material with optimal nonlinear absorption response while avoiding undesirable low transmittance. Here, a novel symmetrical heteroacenes compound 4,4'-(buta-1,3-diyne-1,4-diylbis(2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,14-diphenyldibenzo[de,qr]tetracene-12,11-diyl))bis(N,N-diphenylaniline)(abbreviated as JPC-42) was synthesized and its nonlinear optical properties were investigated under different pulse-width excitation con-ditions at 532 nm. Results show that the compound with twisted structure displays superior optical limiting response in which extremely high transmittance (91% in 532 nm) and low OL threshold (3 x 10-3 J/cm2 in femtosecond regime, 130 x 10-3 J/cm2 in picosecond regime) are obtained. Our results demonstrate that this twist-acene compound is a promising candidate in laser protection fields.

Abstract:A novel family of unsymmetrical twistacene analogues were synthesized in a palladium-promoted cross-coupling reaction and fully characterized, where five-membered ring was embedded into the main skeleton in these molecules. The formed all-carbon compounds appreciate a series of promising photophysical properties such as good thermal stability and photostability than that of acenes consisting of all six-membered rings. All of them emitted strong solution fluorescence covered a wide range from cyan to yellow. In addition, the nonlinear optical properties were further investigated through the top-hat Z-scan technique at 515 nm, which indicates that all of them presented excellent third-order nonlinear absorption effects.

Abstract:Three novel furanacenes (5/D5c) have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal analyses suggested that the as-prepared molecules 5a/5b formed twisted configurations. The absorption and emission spectra of these compounds (5/D5c) and their precursors, alkynyl-modified acenes (3), were measured to uncover the substituent effect on their optoelectronic properties. Twistfuranacenes 5a/5b and substituted twistacenes 3 emit strong blue light, and the triphenylamine-decorated p-system D5c exhibited obviously red-shifted fluorescence. Nonlinear spectroscopic investigation illustrated that the cyclized furanacenes 5/D5c presented larger two-photon absorption cross section than twistacenes 3, being attributed to the introduction of more delocalized electrons from electron-rich furan units. Apparently, these observations might be beneficial for the design of novel twistacenes/heteroacenes and the development of organic photonic materials.

Abstract:Abstract The rotation of a C = C bond in an alkene can be efficiently accelerated by creating the high-strain ground state and stabilizing the transition state of the process. Herein, the synthesis, structures, and properties of several highly twisted alkenes are comprehensively explored. A facile and practical synthetic approach to target molecules is developed. The twist angles and lengths of the central C = C bonds in these molecules are 36–58° and 1.40–1.43 Å, respectively, and confirmed by X-ray crystallography and DFT calculations. A quasi-planar molecular half with the π-extended substituents delivers a shallow rotational barrier (down to 2.35 kcal/mol), indicating that the rotation of the C = C bond is as facile as that of the aryl-aryl bond in 2-flourobiphenyl. Other versatile and unique properties of the studied compounds include a broad photoabsorption range (from 250 up to 1100 nm), a reduced HOMO-LUMO gap (1.26–1.68 eV), and a small singlet-triplet energy gap (3.65–5.68 kcal/mol).

Abstract:Four chalcogenophene-fused acenes containing O, S, Se, or Te, respectively, were presented, and the chalcogenophene effect on linear and nonlinear optics was systematically investigated. Their excited-state absorption performance and two-photon absorption (TPA) capacity could be modulated by the incorporating chalcogen atoms. The experimental results showed that the heavy chalcogen facilitated the intersystem crossing resulting in the presence of the triplet state absorption for PyPSe and PyPTe, and the TPA capacity gradually increased with the atomic size of the chalcogens. The theoretical calculation inferred that their nonlinear optical performance was closely related to the contributions of the chalcogenophene component to heterotwistacenes in the final excited state. In addition, PyPTe was able to work under various laser pulses from femtoseconds to nanoseconds.

Abstract:A novel compound, 5,7,14,16-tetraphenyl-8:9,12:13-bisbenzo-hexatwistacene (TBH), has been successfully synthesized through a retro-DielsAlder reaction. Single-crystal structure analysis indicated that TBH has a twisted configuration with a torsion angle of 27.34 degrees. The HOMOLUMO gap of TBH calculated from the difference between the half-wave redox potentials (E1/2ox=+0.40 eV and E1/2red=-1.78 eV) is 2.18 eV, which is in good agreement with the band gap (2.19 eV) derived from the UV/Vis absorption data. In addition, organic light-emitting devices using TBH as emitter have been fabricated. The results revealed that TBH is a promising red light-emitting candidate for applications in organic light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Four novel pyrene-fused asymmetrical twistacenes (1-4) containing heteroatoms in the main frameworks were synthesized and their structures are characterized by using (HNMR)-H-1, C-13 NMR and mass spectrometry. Single crystal X-ray analysis shows that compound 1 has a twisted structure with the torsion angle of 26.39 degrees between pyrene moiety and naphthalene unit, and the terminal benzenedithiol group fold out of the naphthalene plane with dihedral angle of 53.10 degrees. Moreover, the effect of heteroatoms on their optical and electrochemical property was studied in detail.
