Abstract:Two-dimensional carbide/nitride materials, i.e., MXenes, were first synthesized from the corresponding MAX phases in 2011. Since their discovery, they have been widely applied in batteries, supercapacitors, electromagnetic shielding materials, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis due to their unique and tunable physical, chemical, and electrical properties. Recently, MXenes have been applied in thermal catalytic reactions, such as hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, water-gas shift reactions, and desulfurization due to their thermal stability and superior catalyst properties similar to noble metals. In this article, we systematically summarize the characteristics of MXenes as catalysts and supports compared with other traditional thermal catalysts from both structures and catalytic activities. Furthermore, the nature of termination groups, active sites, and the metal-MXene interactions are elaborated. Finally, we provide insights into the future development of catalysts based on MXene materials.

Abstract:MXenes are known as a new type of two-dimensional layered materials that are composed of carbide, nitride, or carbonitride of transition metals. In the recent discovery of a new class of MXenes, two transition metals occupy the metal site, called double transition metal MXenes (DTM). These multilayer composites are of interest due to their attractive features such as high ion transport, extensive surface area, and biocompatibility. Some computational methods are used to predict the properties and performance of bimetallic carbonitrides. The most important feature of this category of materials is the stability and amount of formation energy, which directly affects the choice of material in various applications. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are very beneficial to estimate the thermodynamic stability of DTM MXenes. Of course, proper surface modification with stable terminals is needed to overcome the limitations of DTM MXenes. In this review, the electrochemical, metallic, and magnetic properties of DTM MXene have been presented first. In the following, preparation methods are summarized according to the latest published findings. Then, various applications including hydrogen evolution reactions, anode materials in lithium and sodium batteries, nanomagnetic materials, and special applications have been investigated. Finally, more challenges, prospects, and suggestions for the development of two-dimensional DTM MXenes have been presented.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides (MXenes) have been extensively studied in catalysis due to their high specific surface area, favorable electrochemical properties, excellent corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength, superior electrical and thermal conductivity. Additionally, the unique 2D features with adjustable surface properties of MXene enable its structure to be engineered as catalyst towards a range of the electro-, photo- and thermal-catalytic reactions. In this review, we summarize the advanced engineering strategies that have been developed for MXenes to achieve desirable catalytic performance, including termination engineering, atomic engineering, interfacial engineering and hybrid engineering. We focus on disclosing the origin of enhanced catalytic activity realized by different engineering strategies from the mechanism perspective. Then the limitations and challenges of MXenes engineering under various conditions are discussed. Furthermore, some advanced in situ techniques are recommended to elucidate the active sites in MXenes. Finally, we point out the future directions in MXenes engineering towards highly active catalysts at industrial standard.

Abstract:Abstract Since their seminal discovery in 2011, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides/nitrides known as MXenes, that constitute a large family of 2D materials, have been targeted toward various applications due to their outstanding electronic properties. MXenes functioning as co-catalyst in combination with certain photocatalysts have been applied in photocatalytic systems to enhance photogenerated charge separation, suppress rapid charge recombination, and convert solar energy into chemical energy or use it in the degradation of organic compounds. The photocatalytic performance greatly depends on the composition and morphology of the photocatalyst, which, in turn, are determined by the method of preparation used. Here, we review the four different synthesis methods (mechanical mixing, self-assembly, in situ decoration, and oxidation) reported for MXenes in view of their application as co-catalyst in photocatalysis. In addition, the working mechanism for MXenes application in photocatalysis is discussed and an outlook for future research is also provided.

Abstract:The two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides and/or carbonitrides (MXenes) were first synthesized in 2011. In the last couple of years, MXenes have drawn intense interest in the field of catalysts, ion batteries, energy storage, and sensors due to the high chemical diversity and structural complexity of MXenes. In this review, the preparation method, structure, electronic and optical properties of MXene are introduced in detail. More importantly, MXenes, as a co-catalyst, are widely applied to combine with various common photocatalysts such as metal oxide, metal sulfide and g-C3N4 to improve the performance of photocatalytic H2 evolution, CO2 conversion, photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, and nitrogen fixation. The large specific surface area, hydrophilicity, excellent electronic conductivity and surface groups of MXenes play crucial roles in boosting the photocatalytic efficiency of the semiconductor catalysts. Lastly, challenges and invigorating outlook of the photocatalytic applications of MXene materials are also discussed and concluded.

Abstract:As traditional fossil fuel energy development faces significant challenges, two-dimensional layered materials have become increasingly popular in various fields and have generated widespread research interest. MXene is an exceptional catalytic material that is typically integrated into functional composite materials with other substances to enhance its catalytic-reaction performance. Improving the thermal stability, electrical conductivity, and electrochemical activity, as well as enhancing the specific surface structure, can make the material an excellent catalyst for photoelectrocatalysis and energy-regeneration reactions. The article mainly outlines the structural characteristics, preparation methods, and applications of MXene in the field of catalysis. This text highlights the latest progress and performance comparison of MXene-based catalytic functional materials in various fields such as electrochemical conversion, photocatalysis, renewable energy, energy storage, and carbon capture and conversion. It also proposes future prospects and discusses the current bottlenecks and challenges in the development of MXene-based catalytic materials.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides (known as MXenes) have evolved as competitive materials and fillers for developing composites and hybrids for applications ranging from catalysis, energy storage, selective ion filtration, electromagnetic wave attenuation, and electronic/piezoelectric behavior. MXenes’ incorporation into metal matrix and ceramic matrix composites is a growing field with significant potential due to their impressive mechanical, electrical, and chemical behavior. With about 50 synthesized MXene compositions, the degree of control over their composition and structure paired with their high-temperature stability is unique in the field of 2D materials. As a result, MXenes offer a new avenue for application driven design of functional and structural composites with tailorable mechanical, electrical, and thermochemical properties. In this article, we review recent developments for use of MXenes in metal and ceramic composites and provide an outlook for future research in this field.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, i.e MXenes, have been at the center of extensive research since the first MXene material, Ti3C2Tx, was experimentally realized via selective etching of Al layers from its MAX phase, Ti3AlC2, in 2011. Recent years have seen the booming growth of MXenes as promising candidates in wide applications due to their metallic conductivity and surface hydrophilicity. Generally, pristine MXenes are terminated with such functional groups as –F, -OH, and –O. Surface terminations of MXenes have a huge influence on its electronic properties, metallic or semiconductoring, and dynamical stability. Functionalized MXenes are shown to be promising electrocatalysts either alone or as part of MXene-based hybrid materials. The MXene family has been enlarged by extending its parent MAX phases to quaternary phases with multiple metal sites, offering a rich variation of chemistries, compositions, structures, and catalytic performances. In this review, recent advances are provided regarding synthetic strategies, surface structures, electronic structures, and electrocatalytic applications.

Abstract:MXene materials have found emerging applications as catalysts for chemical reactions due to their intriguing physical and chemical applications. In particular, their broad light response and strong photothermal conversion capabilities are likely to render MXenes promising candidates for photothermal catalysis, which is drawing increasing attention in both academic research and industrial applications. MXenes are likely to satisfy all three criteria of a desirable photothermal catalyst: strong light absorption, effective heat management, and versatile surface reactivity. However, their specific functionalities are largely dependent on their structure and composition, which makes understandings of the structure–function relationship of crucial significance. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent progress of MXene–based photothermal catalysts, emphasizing the functionalities and potential applications of MXene materials in fields of photothermal catalysis, and provide insights on design principles of highly efficient MXene–based photothermal catalysts from the atomic scale. This review provides a relatively thorough understanding of MXene–based materials for photothermal catalysis, as well as an in–depth investigation of emerging high-prospect applications in photothermal catalysis.

Abstract:As a new metal carbides/nitrides material, MXenes behaves unique crystal and electronic structure, showing the advantages of metal-like conductivity, prominent optical properties, flexible adjustability of elemental composition, rich surface chemical activity, and regular layered structure. Hence, this review firstly provides a detailed investigation of the structural and optical characteristics of MXenes to determine its feasibility as photocatalysts. Then, the preparation methods of MXenes are summarized, among which the etching methods are the most commonly used, mainly including fluorine-containing solution etching, alkali solution etching, electrochemical etching, and molten salt etching etc . Different preparation methods can obtain MXenes with differentiated structural morphologies and photocatalytic activity. However, the poor oxidation stability of MXenes during photocatalytic reactions conducted in aqueous media remains a challenging issue. Excitedly, MXenes with abundant suspended bonds on its surfaces are also easily functionalized. Therefore, the next section is a systematical summary of the functional modification strategies of MXenes, and after modification with organic, inorganic, organic–inorganic hybrid, or ion intercalation, MXenes can exhibit various properties and superior stability in aqueous solutions, further enhancing its photocatalytic adaptability. Based on these points, the review also systematically discusses the application progress of MXenes-based materials in photocatalysis, including degradation of organic pollutants, hydrogen evolution via the decomposition of water, carbon dioxide reduction, nitrogen fixation, reduction and removal of heavy metals, as well as sterilization and disinfection. Overall, the introduction of MXenes into photocatalysts provides rich photogenerated electron transfer channels and promotes the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers, thereby improving the photocatalytic oxidation or reduction reactions. Lastly, the development outlook of MXenes-based materials is also prospected.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have made significant impact on sustainable energy research in the fields of energy storage and conversion. Unlike short-term energy storage strategies (e.g. batteries and supercapacitors), the catalytic conversion of simple molecules to value-added chemicals using renewable energy represents a more long-term solution to the world's energy crisis. Significant advances in density functional theory and low-cost computing in the past decade have enabled the generation of reliable materials data from fundamental physics equations. The paradigm shift towards theory-guided materials design is expected to enhance the catalyst discovery and development process by providing rational guidance to screen viable MXene catalysts more rapidly than an experimental-only approach. In this review, we aim to provide a critical appraisal of the latest theoretical and experimental work on MXenes in the fields of electro- and photocatalytic energy conversion, including relevant reactions involving hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen molecules. In the process, we will also be pointing out current limitations in theoretical models, existing scientific gaps and future research directions for this field.

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into fuels and feedstock chemicals via photothermal catalysis holds promise for efficient solar energy utilization to tackle the global energy shortage and climate change. Despite recent advances, it is of emerging interest to explore promising materials with excellent photothermal properties to boost the performance of photothermal CO2 catalysis. Here, we report the discovery of MXene materials as superior photothermal supports for metal nanoparticles. As a proof-of-concept study, we demonstrate that Nb2C and Ti3C2, two typical MXene materials, can enhance the photothermal effect and thus boost the photothermal catalytic activity of Ni nanoparticles. A record CO2 conversion rate of 8.50 mol·gNi–1·h–1 is achieved for Nb2C-nanosheet-supported Ni nanoparticles under intense illumination. Two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2) MXene towards enhancing thermal catalysis decomposition of dihydroxylammonium 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50)

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrated that two-dimensional (2D) MXene materials (Ti3C2) were creatively introduced into the thermal catalysis fields of high energy density salts dihydroxylammonium 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50) and Ti3C2 MXene materials play a significant catalytic role in the thermal decomposition of TKX-50. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the morphology and structure of the Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to evaluate the thermal decomposition properties of pure TKX-50 with and without 2D Ti3C2 added. The results showed that with adding 5 wt% MXene, the peak temperature of TKX-50 was reduced from 250.5 to 233.3 °C, which is a reduction of 17.2 °C. The reaction heat release increased from 2197 to 2907 J g−1, which is an increase of 710 J g−1. The Ea was decreased by 44.8 kJ mol−1, from 220.0 to 175.2 kJ mol−1. Moreover, a synergistic catalytic mechanism for the thermal decomposition of TKX-50 was proposed.

Abstract:Recently a new, large family of two-dimensional (2D) early transition metal carbides and carbonitrides, called MXenes, was discovered. MXenes are produced by selective etching of the A element from the MAX phases, which are metallically conductive, layered solids connected by strong metallic, ionic, and covalent bonds, such as Ti2 AlC, Ti3 AlC2 , and Ta4 AlC3 . MXenes -combine the metallic conductivity of transition metal carbides with the hydrophilic nature of their hydroxyl or oxygen terminated surfaces. In essence, they behave as "conductive clays". This article reviews progress-both -experimental and theoretical-on their synthesis, structure, properties, intercalation, delamination, and potential applications. MXenes are expected to be good candidates for a host of applications. They have already shown promising performance in electrochemical energy storage systems. A detailed outlook for future research on MXenes is also presented.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have attracted intense interest since the successful discovery of mechanically exfoliated graphene. Their unique chemical, mechanical, optical, and electrical properties have been exploited in a wide range of applications, including electrical/optoelectrical devices, solar cells, sensors, membranes, and electro/photocatalysis. However, the application of 2D nanomaterials as thermocatalysts is much less common such that a wide range of questions regarding their activity and stability remain.Herein, the application of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPTs) and MXenes as thermocatalysts is reviewed. The data indicate that in most cases, reducing the thickness of the catalyst to that of a single or a few layers of atoms, leads to a significant improvement in product selectivity and reaction rate. However, challenges remain, including the low thermal and chemical stability of 2D nanostructures at typical thermocatalytic operating conditions, facile poisoning of the exposed surface, and rapid loss of activity. In addition, the synthesis procedures for 2D nanostructures are complex, making reproducibility and scale-up difficult. This review identifies knowledge gaps to draw attention to these unique materials that have the potential for significant impact as thermocatalysts.

Abstract:Electro-, photo-, and photoelectrocatalysis play a critical role toward the realization of a sustainable energy economy. They facilitate numerous redox reactions in energy storage and conversion systems, enabling the production of chemical feedstock and clean fuels from abundant resources like water, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. One major obstacle for their large-scale implementation is the scarcity of cost-effective, durable, and efficient catalysts. A family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides (MXenes) has recently emerged as promising earth-abundant candidates for large-area catalytic energy storage and conversion due to their unique properties of hydrophilicity, high metallic conductivity, and ease of production by solution processing. To take full advantage of these desirable properties, MXenes have been combined with other materials to form MXene hybrids with significantly enhanced catalytic performances beyond the sum of their individual components. MXene hybridization tunes the electronic structure toward optimal binding of redox active species to improve intrinsic activity while increasing the density and accessibility of active sites. This review outlines recent strategies in the design of MXene hybrids for industrially relevant electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and photoelectrocatalytic applications such as water splitting, metal–air/sulfur batteries, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrogen reduction. By clarifying the roles of individual material components in the MXene hybrids, we provide design strategies to synergistically couple MXenes with associated materials for highly efficient and durable catalytic applications. Abstract:Transition metal nitrides and/or carbides (MXenes) are a class of two dimensional (2D) materials with remarkable mechanical strength, carrier mobility, and other desirable characteristics. It has been suggested that the characteristics of these materials can be manipulated by adjusting the proportions of surface terminators like –O, –OH, –F, -Br, –I, –S, -Se, -Te, and –NH 2 . The Gibbs free energy and work function (Φ) of the adsorbed intermediate, specifically H∗ (∣△GH∗∣), on MXene can be regulated by surface terminating groups (-O, –OH, –F, -Cl, and -Br). This characteristic enables the utilization of MXene in catalytic applications. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the current advancements made in the morphological design of 2D MXene materials. The focus of this review is mostly on the critical examination of the influence of termination groups on catalytic activity and the selectivity of products. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene engineering design is extensively examined, with particular emphasis on hierarchical structures, quantum dots, and monolayers. To comprehensively comprehend the fundamental catalytic structure of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes and the impact of various termination groups on the energy conversion process, it is essential to begin with an extensive literature analysis. This review encompasses an examination of their catalytic capabilities as well as an exploration of the mechanisms underlying the fabrication of surface terminating groups. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis is presented regarding the ramifications of reaction parameters, challenges, and synthesis procedures in the context of tailoring the morphology of various MXene materials while controlling the presence of specific functional groups. Last, the future prospects for 2D MXenes application as green materials in reaction engineering and energy conversion applications are discussed.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially transition metal carbides and/or nitrides (MXenes), have aroused extensive research interest in the field of photocatalysis. Specifically, the unique properties of high electrical conductivity, abundant surface functional groups, considerable specific surface area, and excellent photo-thermal effect allow MXenes to play versatile roles in photocatalysis. Herein, the latest and encouraging developments in MXenes-based composite materials for photocatalytic applications in recent two years are reviewed. We first briefly describe the roles of MXenes as a support and co-catalyst to promote the distribution of photocatalysts and facilitate the separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, respectively. Then, the design and fabrication of MXenes-based composite materials for various photocatalytic applications including H2 evolution, CO2 reduction, environmental remediation, and H2O2 generation are comprehensively illustrated. Finally, we point out the challenges and prospects for the future development of MXenes-based composite materials.
