Abstract:The nature and degree of defects can fine-tune the light absorption energy (Eabs) and charge transfer energy (ELMCT) of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are important for photocatalytic reactions. Herein, a series of UiO-66-NH2 with missing-linker (ML)/missing-cluster (MC) defects and different degree of ligand vacancies were synthesized and utilized to explore their photocatalytic performance of CO2 reduction. The photocatalytic CO yield of UiO-66-NH2-ML-100 with ML defects reaches 21.3 μmol g-1 h-1, which is 2.2 times that of the UiO-66-NH2-MC-150 with MC. Both experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the nature of MC defects enlarges the Eabs, while the ligand vacancy changes the coordination environment of Zr(IV) and lowers the ELMCT. More ligand vacancies per metal node lead to smaller ELMCT, which is beneficial for CO2 photoreduction reaction. This work provides a way to boost photocatalytic performance by tailoring the defects of MOFs.

Abstract:Defects in MOFs can benefit light absorption and charge transfer for photocatalytic application, nevertheless, studies on interplay between structural defects and photocatalytic properties of MOFs are in infancy. Herein, a series of UiO-66-NH2 with different kinds of defects were created for regulating CO2 photocatalytic reduction. Theoretical calculations in combination with experimental data verified that the sample with ligand-vacant (MO66-NH2-LV) defect performed better than non-defect, missing-cluster and monocarboxylate compensated ones in the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions. UiO-66-NH2-LV shows superior photocatalytic activity with the highest CO yield of 30.5 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) , which is 9.2 times higher than that of the sample with missing-cluster (UiO-66-NH2-MC), as well as the highest quantum yield (QY) of 0.90%. DFT calculations further demonstrate the correlation between discriminative photocatalytic activities in defect structures and tunable electronic properties characterized by absorption energy, E-abs, and charge transfer energy, ELMCT, in the photocatalytic process. The ligand-vacant defect with the lowest sum of E-abs and ELMCT will lower photocatalytic reaction energy barrier in the rate-limiting step among the elementary reaction step during CO2 photoreduction. The insights gained from this study will guide the MOFs defect-engineering for enhancing CO2 photocatalytic capacity.
Crystal-Defect-Induced Longer Lifetime of Excited States in a Metal-Organic Framework Photocatalyst to Enhance Visible-Light-Mediated CO2 Reduction

Abstract:We report the structural defects in Zr-metal-organic framework (MOFs) for achieving highly efficient CO2 reduction under visible light irradiation. A series of defective Zr-MOF-X (X = 160, 240, 320, or 400) are synthesized by acid-regulated defect engineering. Compared to pristine defect-free Zr-MOF (NNU-28), N2 uptake increases for Zr-MOF-X synthesized with the HAc modulator, producing a larger pore space and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area. The pore size distribution demonstrates that defective Zr-MOF-X exhibits mesoporous structures. Electrochemistry tests show that defective Zr-MOF-X possesses a more negative reduction potential and a higher photocurrent responsive signal than that of pristine NNU-28. Consequently, the defective samples exhibit a significantly higher efficiency in the photoreduction of CO2 to formate. Transient absorption spectroscopies manifest that structural defects modulate the excited-state behivior of Zr-MOF-X and improve the photogenerated charge separation of Zr-MOF-X. Furthermore, electron paramagnetic resonance and in-suit X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provide additional evidence of the high photocatalytic performance exhibited by defective Zr-MOF-X. Results demonstrate that structural defects in Zr-MOF-X also improve the charge transfer, producing abundant Zr(III) catalytically active sites, exhibiting a slower decay process than defect-free Zr-MOF. The long-lifetime Zr(III) species in defective Zr-MOF-X are fully exposed to a high-concentration CO2 atmosphere, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency of CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The nature of defects and organic ligands can fine-tune the absorption energy (Eabs) of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which is crucial for photocatalytic reactions; however, the relevant studies are in their infancy. Herein, a series of typical MOFs of the UiO family (UiO-6x-NH2, x = 8, 7, and 6) with ligands of varied lengths and amino-group-modified defects were synthesized and employed to explore their performance for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Sample UiO-66-NH2-2ABA (2ABA = 3,5-diamino-benzoate) with the shortest dicarboxylate ligand and two amino-group-modified defects exhibits superior photocatalytic activity due to the lowest Eabs. The CO yield photocatalyzed by UiO-66-NH2-2ABA is 17.5 μmol g-1 h-1, which is 2.4 times that of UiO-68-NH2-BA (BA = benzoate) with the longest ligand and no amino group involved in the defects. Both the experiments and theoretical calculations show that shorter dicarboxylate ligands and more amino groups result in smaller Eabs, which is favorable for photocatalytic reactions. This study provides new insights into boosting the photocatalytic efficiency by modulating the defects and ligands in MOFs.

Abstract:Defect engineering is a highly effective approach to regulate the electronic structure of the catalyst surface, widely employed in the field of photocatalytic energy conversion. In this study, we have successfully synthesized a novel dual-defective In2S3/Zn0.3Cd0.7S (IS/ZCS) heterojunction structure via a self-assembly method, composed of Zn-vacancy-rich Zn0.3Cd0.7S (ZCS) and S-vacancy-rich In2S3 (IS). Under visible light illumination, 3% IS/ZCS sample exhibits remarkable photocatalytic performance in the synergistic reaction of CO2 reduction and 4-chlorobenzyl alcohol (Cl-PhCH2OH) oxidation with the CO yield significantly improved by a factor of 3.5 and 51 compared to that of ZCS and IS, respectively. The combined experimental data and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the dual-defective structure and Z-scheme transfer mode are the key factors behind the enhanced photocatalytic activity, providing more active sites and effectively improving the utilization of photogenerated charge carriers (PCCs). Moreover, the reaction pathway and catalytic mechanism of photocatalytic CO2 reduction were elucidated by the in-situ FTIR technique combined with DFT calculations, monitoring the intermediate and final products during the reaction period. Our results provide a powerful example of designing novel heterojunction photocatalysts with high activity and accelerating the separation of PCCs, with broad implications for the development of efficient photocatalytic systems.

Abstract:The impact of defects on carbon dioxide (CO2) photoreduction property is sometimes contradictory. Herein, we employ two-dimensional materials, possessing high-density and high-uniformity active sites, as ideal models to thoroughly investigate the influence of defects on three main processes during CO2 photoreduction. As an example, oxygen-deficient ZnGa2O4 atomic layers are successfully fabricated, verified by the electron spin resonance spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra. UV−vis diffuse reflectance spectra, photoluminescence spectra, surface photovoltage spectroscopy, CO2 adsorption isotherms and density functional theory calculations manifest the presence of oxygen defects helps to expand the photoabsorption, accelerate the carrier separation, enhance the CO2 adsorption and protonation process. As a result, the carbon monoxide evolution rate of the defective ZnGa2O4 atomic layers was approximately 88 times higher than that of the ZnGa2O4 atomic layers. In a word, this work discloses the introduction of defects on photocatalysts makes for optimizing the three primary processes, thus obtaining boosted CO2 photoreduction performace.

Abstract:Photoreduction of CO2 into value-added fuels under mild conditions is a promising route to relieve the pressure from extensive CO2 emission and energy consumption, but the rational design of novel photocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction remains a big challenge. Herein, a series of transition metals doped In2O3/C (M = Fe, Cu, and Zn) photocatalysts are prepared based on a bimetallic metal-organic framework template, where the rearrangement of electron density distribution is facilely achieved via doping metal atoms. Correspondingly, the broadened light-harvesting scope, charge transfer rate, and produced intermediates in photocatalytic CO2 reduction can be optimized. In particular, the Cu-In2O3/C exhibits a largely improved CO yield with a high selectivity, which is superior to most of the previously reported photocatalysts derived from MOFs. This work thus provides an efficient approach for tailoring the electronic structure of photocatalysts, which shows promising applications in carbon cycling.

Abstract:The coordination microenvironment of metal active sites in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) plays a crucial role in its performance for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, it remains a challenge to clarify the structure-performance relationship for CO2RR catalyzed by MOFs. Herein, a series of MOFs with different coordination microenvironments of Cu(I) sites (Cu-Cl, Cu-Br, and Cu-I) to evaluate their performances for CO2RR is synthesized. With the increasing radius of halogen atom, the CO2 adsorption capacity increases and d-band center of Cu positively shifts to the Fermi level, leading to enhance the selectivity of CO2 to CH4 conversion. Cu-I gives the highest total Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 83.2%, with a FE of CH4 up to 57.2% and CH4 partial current density of 60.7 mA cm(-2) at -1.08 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Theoretical calculations reveal that the shifted d-band center of Cu site contributes to reduced formation energies of *CH2O and *CH3O intermediates, which is the potential-determining step of CO2RR and thus facilitates the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4. This study opens a new avenue for studying the relationship between the coordination microenvironment of active site and electroreduction reaction performance of MOFs.

Abstract:Defects are prevalent in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) constructed based on reversible covalent chemistries. However, manipulating defects in COFs to achieve functionalities remains a significant challenge. Herein, a facial method is provided to regulate the boundary unreacted defects in π‐conjugated COFs to generate distinct and stable paramagnetic radicals, which endow the COFs with a bulk ferromagnetic transition behavior at low temperature, and the efficient photothermal conversion with application in solar vapor generation and seawater desalination. This work not only provides new insights to tailor and control the physicochemical properties of COFs by defect engineering but also enriches the applications of COFs in solar energy utilization. Herein, a strategy is presented to manipulate boundary radical defects in fully conjugated covalent organic frameworks while retaining crystallinity and porous structure. These exhibit spontaneous paramagnetic properties, near‐infrared absorption, high stability, and efficient photothermal conversion. This work discloses the potential to modulate the electron spin ground states and photothermal properties by defect engineering.

Abstract:This manuscript presents a synthesis strategy for regulating both the steric property (ligand vacancy) and electronic property (metal valence) of coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS) in the Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) via vanillin (VAN). VAN molecule involved in the construction of ZIF-67 crystal structure can replace some of the original ligands via competition coordination, and create defect structure and mesopores in ZIF-67 structure. Meanwhile, the aldehyde group in VAN can reduce part of the trivalent cobalt on the surface to divalent cobalt, which is conducive to the adsorption of reactive species in the photocatalytic water splitting process. Moreover, the defective ZIF-67 exhibits favorable modified properties for photocatalysis, including improved porosity, narrow band gaps, enhanced light absorption and carrier separation ability. Compared with other methods using monobasic acid as a regulator, VAN can simultaneously create ligand vacancy, mesopore and more Co2+ sites in MOFs, which may be a more promising method for preparing photocatalysts with excellent performance.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction holds great potential for alleviating global energy and environmental issues, where the electronic structure of the catalytic center plays a crucial role. However, the spin state, a key descriptor of electronic properties, is largely overlooked. Herein, we present a simple strategy to regulate the spin states of catalytic Co centers by changing their coordination environment by exchanging the Co species into a stable Zn-based metal-organic framework (MOF) to afford Co-OAc, Co-Br, and Co-CN for CO2 photoreduction. Experimental and DFT calculation results suggest that the distinct spin states of the Co sites give rise to different charge separation abilities and energy barriers for CO2 adsorption/activation in photocatalysis. Consequently, the optimized Co-OAc with the highest spin-state Co sites presents an excellent photocatalytic CO2 activity of 2325.7 mu mol & sdot;g(-1)& sdot;h(-1) and selectivity of 99.1% to CO, which are among the best in all reported MOF photocatalysts, in the absence of a noble metal and additional photosensitizer. This work underlines the potential of MOFs as an ideal platform for spin-state manipulation toward improved photocatalysis.

Abstract:The manipulation of electronic structure and prevention of photogenerated carriers from being quenched in bulk defects during the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) have been effectively demonstrated through surface vacancy and defect engineering. In this work, the electronic structure on the surface of Zn3In2S6/ZnS (ZIS/ZnS) is significantly modified by the introduction and control of the surface S vacancies (SV) through Ar-plasma treatment. EPR and XPS analyses confirmed that SV was exclusively present on the ZIS/ZnS surface. The resulting ZIS/ZnS heterojunction photocatalysts demonstrate an impressive 46.6% selectivity toward C2 products even in the absence of cocatalysts. The mechanism of photocatalytic CRR is further elucidated through in situ analysis. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the presence of In and Zn atoms adjacent to SV significantly enhances the adsorption of CO2 and facilitates C-C coupling.

Abstract:In this work, a novel van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction composite combining g-C3N4 with nitrogen vacancies and Tp-Tta COF manifests effective interface contact area and excellent photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. First-principles density functional theory calculation and experimental results suggest that the presence of nitrogen vacancies in g-C3N4 can widen the Fermi level gap between C3N4 (NH) and Tp-Tta COF, promoting the recombination of invalid photogenerated carriers through S-scheme pathway. Benefitted from the accelerated transfer of photogenerated charges at the vdW heterostructure interface, the deactivation of oxygen vacancies in C3N4 (NH)/COF is prevented and much higher photocatalytic activity and stability are obtained. The efficient electron transfer and the affinity of Tp-Tta for CO2 are beneficial to the enhanced CO selectivity. This work provides insights for the design of S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for CO2 reduction.

Tuning Internal Strain in Metal-Organic Frameworks via Vapor Phase Infiltration for CO2 Reduction

Abstract:A gas-phase approach to form Zn coordination sites on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by vapor-phase infiltration (VPI) was developed. Compared to Zn sites synthesized by the solution-phase method, VPI samples revealed approximately 2.8 % internal strain. Faradaic efficiency towards conversion of CO2 to CO was enhanced by up to a factor of four, and the initial potential was positively shifted by 200-300 mV. Using element-specific X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the local coordination environment of the Zn center was determined to have square-pyramidal geometry with four Zn-N bonds in the equatorial plane and one Zn-OH2 bond in the axial plane. The fine-tuned internal strain was further supported by monitoring changes in XRD and UV/Visible absorption spectra across a range of infiltration cycles. The ability to use internal strain to increase catalytic activity of MOFs suggests that applying this strategy will enhance intrinsic catalytic capabilities of a variety of porous materials.

CuI gives the highest total Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 83.2%, with a FE of CH4 up to 57.2% and CH4 partial current density of 60.7 mA cm−2 at −1.08 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Theoretical calculations reveal that the shifted d‐band center of Cu site contributes to reduced formation energies of *CH2O and *CH3O intermediates, which is the potential‐determining step of CO2RR and thus facilitates the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4. This study opens a new avenue for studying the relationship between the coordination microenvironment of active site and electroreduction reaction performance of MOFs.

In Situ Porphyrin Substitution in a Zr(IV)‐MOF for Stability Enhancement and Photocatalytic CO 2 Reduction

Abstract:Despite numerous inherent merits of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), structural fragility has imposed great restrictions on their wider involvement in many applications, such as in catalysis. Herein, a strategy for enhancing stability and enabling functionality in a labile Zr(IV)‐MOF has been proposed by in situ porphyrin substitution. A size‐ and geometry‐matched robust linear porphyrin ligand 4,4′‐(porphyrin‐5,15‐diyl)dibenzolate (DCPP2−) is selected to replace the 4,4′‐(1,3,6,8‐tetraoxobenzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline‐2,7(1H,3H,6H,8H)‐diyl)dibenzoate (NDIDB2−) ligand in the synthesis of BUT‐109(Zr), affording BUT‐110 with varied porphyrin contents. Compared to BUT‐109(Zr), the chemical stability of BUT‐110 series is greatly improved. Metalloporphyrin incorporation endows BUT‐110 MOFs with high catalytic activity in the photoreduction of CO2, in the absence of photosensitizers. By tuning the metal species and porphyrin contents in BUT‐110, the resulting BUT‐110‐50%‐Co is demonstrated to be a good photocatalyst for selective CO2‐to‐CO reduction, via balancing the chemical stability, photocatalytic efficiency, and synthetic cost. This work highlights the advantages of in situ ligand substitution for MOF modification, by which uniform distribution and high content of the incoming ligand are accessible in the resulting MOFs. More importantly, it provides a promising approach to convert unstable MOFs, which mainly constitute the vast MOF database but have always been neglected, into robust functional materials.

Abstract:How to regulate the energy barrier of *COOH is the rate determining step of photocatalytic reduction CO2 to produce gaseous CO. Herein, an appropriate Zn vacancy on ZnIn2S4 was synthesized to achieve a desired photocatalytic CO2 reduction capacity (CO: 5.63 mmol g-1 h-1) and selectivity (CO: 97.9%). Various sulfhydryl group were selected to regulate the Zn vacancy formation in ZnIn2S4, which directly generated the unsaturated coordination state sulfur adjacent to Zn vacancy accompanied with less electron compared to ZnIn2S4 without Zn vacancy. Comprehensive experimental analysis and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the appropriate Zn vacancy tuned the Gibbs free energy of *COOH from the endothermic process to the exothermic process in the process of photoreduction CO2. This work provided a cation vacancies engineering method for improving efficiency of photocatalytic CO2 reduction by adjusting energy barrier of intermediate.

Abstract:The technology of electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to produce hydrocarbon fuels not only alleviates energy shortages but also suppresses the greenhouse effect, demonstrating enormous potential applications. In this context, we aim to explore new reliable materials for reducing CO2 (CO2RR) through electrocatalysis. Hence, we investigated the performance of Cu3(C12X)2, where X signifies organic-ligands (N₁₂H₆, N₉H₃O₃, N₉H₃S₃, N₆O₆, N₆S₆) for the CO2RR using density functional theory (DFT). The 2D Cu3(C12X)2 monolayers show metallic characteristics because of the presence of adequate π electron conjugation network as-well-as a constructive interaction between the metal atom, organic-ligands, and benzene-rings, with the exception of Cu3(C12N9H3O3)2, which displayed semiconducting characteristic. The catalytic activity of Cu3(C12X)2 can be tuned by adjusting the organic-ligands' ability to facilitate interaction between the CO2RR intermediates and the metal complex (Cu-X4). Among all MOFs, Cu3(C12N6S6)2 have excellent CO2RR activity towards CO and formic acid. All other Cu3(C12X)2 monolayers demonstrated dynamic CO2RR catalytic activity as well as superior selectivity over hydrogen evolution (HER) suggesting that these materials have the potential to be useful as CO2RR electrocatalysts. This study introduces the concept of building MOFs with favorable features to meet the specific needs of a number of research domains including catalysis, energy conversion and storage.
