Abstract:We show that hematite, $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, below its Morin transition, has a ferroic ordering of rank-5 magnetic triakontadipoles on the Fe ions. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling, these are the lowest-order ferroically aligned magnetic multipoles, and they give rise to the $g$-wave non-relativistic spin splitting in hematite. We find that the ferroically ordered magnetic triakontadipoles result from the simultaneous antiferroic ordering of the charge hexadecapoles and the magnetic dipoles, providing a route to manipulating the magnitude and the sign of the magnetic triakontadipoles as well as the spin splitting. Furthermore, we find that both the ferroic ordering of the magnetic triakontadipoles and many of the spin-split features persist in the weak ferromagnetic phase above the Morin transition temperature.

Abstract:A long-range magnetic order appears on side decorated Heisenberg spin nanoribbon at nonzero temperature, although no spontaneous magnetization exists in a one- or two-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model at any nonzero temperature according to Mermin-Wagner theorem. By use of the spin Green's function method, we calculated the magnetizations of Heisenberg nanoribbon decorated by side spins with single-ion anisotropy and found that the system exhibits a nonzero transition temperature, whether the decorated edge spins of the system link together or separate from each other. When the width of the nanoribbon achieves infinity limit, the transition temperatures of the system tend to a same finite constant eventually whether one edge or double edges are decorated by side spins in the nanoribbon. The results reveal that the magnetism of a low-dimensional spin system is different from that of a three-dimensional spin system. When the single-ion anisotropy of edge spins in Heisenberg spin nanoribbon can be modulated by an electric field experimentally, various useful long-range magnetic orders of the system can be obtained. The works can provide a detailed theoretical basis for designing and fabricating the next-generation low-dimensional magnetic random-access memory.

Abstract:Edge magnetism in zigzag transition metal dichalcogenide nanoribbons is studied using a three-band tight-binding model with local electron-electron interactions. Both mean field theory and the unbiased, numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo method are applied. Depending on the edge filling, mean field theory predicts different phases: gapped spin dimer and antiferromagnetic phases appear for two specific fillings, with a tendency towards metallic edge-ferromagnetism away from those fillings. Determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations confirm the stability of the antiferromagnetic gapped phase at the same edge filling as mean field theory, despite being sign-problematic for other fillings. The obtained results point to edge filling as yet another key ingredient to understand the observed magnetism in nanosheets. Moreover, the filling dependent edge magnetism gives rise to spin-polarized edge currents in zigzag nanoribbons which could be tuned through a back gate voltage, with possible applications to spintronics. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.105.195130 ©2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:Recently, broken symmetry effect induced edge states in two-dimensional electronic systems have attracted great attention. However, whether edge states may exist in strongly correlated oxides is not yet known. In this work, using perovskite manganites as prototype systems, we demonstrate that edge states do exist in strongly correlated oxides. Distinct appearance of ferromagnetic metallic phase is observed along the edge of manganite strips by magnetic force microscopy. The edge states have strong influence on the transport properties of the strips, leading to higher metal-insulator transition temperatures and lower resistivity in narrower strips. Model calculations show that the edge states are associated with the broken symmetry effect of the antiferromagnetic charge-ordered states in manganites. Besides providing a new understanding of the broken symmetry effect in complex oxides, our discoveries indicate that novel edge state physics may exist in strongly correlated oxides beyond the current two-dimensional electronic systems.

Abstract:We study the nature of edge states in extrinsically and spontaneously dimerized states of two-dimensional spin-12 antiferromagnets, by performing quantum Monte Carlo simulation. We show that a gapless edge mode emerges in the wide region of the dimerized phases, and the critical exponent of spin correlators along the edge deviates from the value of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) universality in large but finite systems at low temperatures. We also demonstrate that the gapless nature at edges is stable against several perturbations such as external magnetic field, easy-plane XXZ anisotropy, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and further-neighbor exchange interactions. The edge states exhibit non-TLL behavior, depending strongly on model parameters and kinds of perturbations. Possible ways of detecting these edge states are discussed. Properties of edge states we show in this paper could also be used as reference points to study other edge states of more exotic gapped magnetic phases such as spin liquids.

Abstract:While usual edge states in the quantum Hall effect(QHE) reside between adjacent Landau levels, QHE in graphene has a peculiar edge mode at E=0 that reside right within the n=0 Landau level as protected by the chiral symmetry. We have theoretically studied the edge states to show that the E=0 edge mode, despite being embedded in the bulk Landau level, does give rise to a wave function whose charge is accumulated along zigzag edges. This property, totally outside continuum models, implies that the graphene QHE harbors edges distinct from ordinary QHE edges with their topological origin. In the charge accumulation the bulk states re-distribute their charge significantly, which may be called a topological compensation of charge density. The real space behavior obtained here should be observable in an STM imaging.

Anti-helical edge magnons in patterned antiferromagnetic thin film

Abstract:Helical edge states in topological insulators give counterpropagating spin current on the two parallel edges. We here propose anti-helical edge states of magnons in patterned antiferromagnetic thin films, which host copropagating spin current on the two parallel edges, where the two magnon modes with opposite chirality act like the spin. The embedded heavy metal dot array in the thin film induces interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (iDMIs), drives the magnon bands into nontrivial topological phases, characterized by spin Chern number. The resulting helical edge modes lead to spin current with the direction dependent on the sign of iDMI parameter. In a strip geometry, we combine two subsystems with two embedded metal dot arrays, which give opposite iDMI parameters. Anti-helical edge states emerge, compensated by the counterpropagating bulk confined states. Helical and anti-helical edge states are verified by the micromagnetic simulations. Our work is quite helpful in the field of magnon spintronics based on antiferromagnets.

Abstract:The Effective Valence Bond (EVB) model is compared against DFT method in the study of magnetic polarization in edge-reconstructed zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR). Our studies lead to the discovery as well as understanding of the anti-ferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state transformation for ZGNRs on one-edge reconstruction from polyacene to polyazulene moieties, with a considerable stabilization of the ferromagnetic state due to the formation of a more stable in-body electronic structure. It is also found that long-range corrected DFT method is required to represent correctly such kind of electronic structure transformations.

Abstract:Hematite carries magnetic signals of interest in tectonic, paleoclimatic, paleomagnetic, and planetary studies. First-order reversal curve (FORC) diagrams have become an important tool for assessing the domain state of, and magnetostatic interactions among, magnetic particles in such studies. We present here FORC diagrams for diverse hematite samples, which provide a catalog for comparison with other studies and explain key features observed for hematite. Ridge-type signatures typical of uniaxial single-domain particle assemblages and "kidney-shaped" FORC signatures, and combinations of these responses, occur commonly in natural and synthetic hematite. Asymmetric features that arise from the triaxial basal plane anisotropy of hematite contribute to vertical spreading in kidney-shaped FORC distributions and are intrinsic responses even for magnetostatically noninteracting particles. The dominant FORC distribution type in a sample (ridge, kidney-shaped, or mixture) depends on the balance between uniaxial/triaxial switching. The identified signals explain magnetization switching and anisotropy features that are intrinsic to the magnetic properties of hematite and other materials with multiaxial magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract:Abstract Helical Luttinger liquid (HLL) is a class of one-dimensional liquids with locked electron spin orientation and momentum. Boundary of a quantum spin Hall insulator is a good example of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) protected HLL, but its topological protection is compromised under finite magnetic field. Boundary HLL with broken bulk TRS belongs to a different topological class which may occur in antiferromagnets. The recently discovered van der Waals antiferromagnet (AFM) MnBi2Te4 offers rich topological band structures which critically relies on the magnetic structure and layer number. Here, we search for signatures of HLL on the edge of even-layer MnBi2Te4 thin flakes by combining magneto-transport and scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy. We directly image helical edge current in the AFM ground state appearing when the chemical potential was gated to the charge neutral point. Such helical edge state accompanies an insulating bulk which is topologically distinct from the ferromagnetic Chern insulator phase as revealed in a magnetic field driven quantum phase transition of the bulk. The edge conductance of the AFM order follows a power-law as a function of temperature and source-drain bias which serves as strong evidence for HLL. Such HLL scaling is robust at finite fields below the quantum critical point. The observed HLL in a layered AFM semiconductor represents a highly tunable topological matter compatible with future spintronics and quantum computation.

Abstract:Magnetism in 2D atomic sheets has attracted considerable interest as its existence could allow the development of electronic and spintronic devices. The existence of magnetism is not sufficient for devices, however, as states must be addressable and modifiable through the application of an external drive. We show that defects in hexagonal boron nitride present a strong interplay between the the N-N distance in the edge and the magnetic moments of the defects. By stress-induced geometry modifications, we change the ground state magnetic moment of the defects. This control is made possible by the triangular shape of the defects as well as the strong spin localisation in the magnetic state.

Majorana Edge States in Superconductor/Noncollinear Magnet Interfaces

Abstract:Through $s-d$ coupling, a superconducting thin film interfaced to a noncollinear magnetic insulator inherits its magnetic order, which may induce unconventional superconductivity that hosts Majorana edge states. From the cycloidal, helical, or (tilted) conical magnetic order of multiferroics, or the Bloch and Neel domain walls of ferromagnetic insulators, the induced pairing is ($p_{x}+p_{y}$)-wave, a pairing state that supports Majorana edge modes without adjusting the chemical potential. In this setup, the Majorana states can be separated over the distance of the long range magnetic order, which may reach macroscopic scale. A skyrmion spin texture, on the other hand, induces a ($p_{r}+ip_{\varphi}$)-wave-like state, which albeit nonuniform and influenced by an emergent electromagnetic field, hosts both a bulk persistent current and a topological edge current.

Spin-dependent edge states in two-dimensional Dirac materials with a flat band

Abstract:The phenomenon of spin-dependent quantum scattering in two-dimensional (2D) pseudospin-1/2 Dirac materials leading to a relativistic quantum chimera was recently uncovered. We investigate spin-dependent Dirac electron optics in 2D pseudospin-1 Dirac materials, where the energy-band structure consists of a pair of Dirac cones and a flat band. In particular, with a suitable combination of external electric fields and a magnetic exchange field, electrons with a specific spin orientation (e.g., spin-down) can be trapped in a class of long-lived edge modes, generating resonant scattering. The spin-dependent edge states are a unique feature of flat-band Dirac materials and have no classical correspondence. However, electrons with the opposite spin (i.e., spin up) undergo conventional quantum scattering with a classical correspondence, which can be understood in the framework of Dirac electron optics. A consequence is that the spin-down electrons produce a large scattering probability with broad scattering angle distribution in both near- and far-field regions, while the spin-up electrons display the opposite behavior. Such characteristically different behaviors of the electrons with opposite spins lead to spin polarization that can be as high as nearly 100%.

Abstract:We report on (magneto)transport experiments in chemically derived narrow graphene nanoribbons under high magnetic fields (up to 60 T). Evidences of field-dependent electronic confinement are given and allow estimating the possible ribbon edge symmetry. A large positive magnetoconductance indicates a strong suppression of backscattering induced by the magnetic field. Such scenario is supported by tight-binding calculations which consider different types of underlying disorders (smooth edge disorder and long-range Coulomb scatterers).

Abstract:The hallmark of the spin-Hall insulator is the presence of gapless edge states of different spins moving in opposite directions. Through analytical solutions in a model calculation for a strip of finite width, we find that edge states on the two sides can couple together to produce a gap in the spectrum, destroying the quantum spin-Hall effect. The application of a magnetic field can however modify and even remove the gap by shifting the momenta of the edge states relative to each other.

Abstract:Quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect is an intriguing phenomenon arising from the helical edge states in two-dimensional topological insulators. We use molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to prepare FeSe films with atomically sharp nematic domain boundaries, where tensile strains, nematicity suppression, and topological band inversion are simultaneously achieved. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we observe edge states at the Fermi level that spatially distribute as two distinct strips in the vicinity of the domain boundaries. At the end point of the boundaries, a bound state at the Fermi level is further observed. The topological origin of the edge states is supported by density functional theory calculations. Our findings not only demonstrate a candidate for QSH states but also provide a new pathway to realize topological superconductivity in a single-component film.
