Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is one of the most robust tools to prepare well-defined polymers with precise topologies and architectures. Although series of improved ATRP methods have been developed to decrease the metal catalyst loading to parts per million, metal residue is the key limiting factor for variety of applications, especially in microelectronic and biomedical area. The feasible solution to this challenge would be the establishment of metal-free ATRP. Since 2014, organocatalyzed ATRP (O-ATRP) or metal free ATRP has achieved significant progress by developing kinds of organic photoredox catalysts. This review highlights the advances in organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization as well as the potential future directions.

Abstract:Atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is a powerful and versatile technique for the synthesis of welldefined polymers with precise control over the molecular weight and architecture. Photoinduced ATRP (photoATRP) is a variant of ATRP based on the transfer of radical polymers through a photochemical process, offering numerous benefits over traditional ATRP, including reduced environmental impact and improved polymer yields. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is an attractive tool for simulating photoATRP, enabling one to predict microscopic properties of the polymers. In this work, a dynamic Monte Carlo (DMC) model is developed for the photoATRP processes at microscopic resolution. The dependency information of individual chains' length on the radical, dormant, and dead polymers is captured. Furthermore, the polymerization process simulation of photoATRP systems based on the developed DMC method for temporal control over polymer growth is established. Several facets on the enhancement of temporal control are investigated under the condition of light intermittency.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been previously mediated by ultrasound using a low concentration of copper complex in water (sono-ATRP) or by addition of piezoelectric materials in organic solvents (mechano-ATRP). However, these procedures proceeded slowly and yielded polymers contaminated by new chains initiated by hydroxyl radicals or by residual piezoelectrics. Unexpectedly, in the presence of sodium carbonate, rapid sono-ATRP of methyl acrylate in DMSO was achieved (80% conversion in <2 h) with excellent control of molecular weights and low dispersities (Mw/Mn < 1.2). The in situ formed CuII/L-CO3 complex in the the presence of ultrasound generated CuI/L species as activators for ATRP and carbonate radical anions. The latter were scavenged by DMSO that was oxidized to dimethyl sulfone. This simple and robust process employs low-intensity ultrasound, air-stable CuII/L catalysts, and carbonate or bicarbonate salts (washing soda or baking soda) to prepare well-defined polyacrylates.
Tribochemically Controlled Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization Enabled by Contact Electrification.

Abstract:AbstractTraditional mechanochemically controlled reversible‐deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) utilizes ultrasound or ball milling to regenerate activators, which induce side reactions because of the high‐energy and high‐frequency stimuli. Here, we propose a facile approach for tribochemically controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (tribo‐ATRP) that relies on contact‐electro‐catalysis (CEC) between titanium oxide (TiO2) particles and CuBr2/tris(2‐pyridylmethylamine (TPMA), without any high‐energy input. Under the friction induced by stirring, the TiO2 particles are electrified, continuously reducing CuBr2/TPMA into CuBr/TPMA, thereby conversing alkyl halides into active radicals to start ATRP. In addition, the effect of friction on the reaction was elucidated by theoretical simulation. The results indicated that increasing the frequency could reduce the energy barrier for the electron transfer from TiO2 particles to CuBr2/TPMA. In this study, the design of tribo‐ATRP was successfully achieved, enabling CEC (ca. 10 Hz) access to a variety of polymers with predetermined molecular weights, low dispersity, and high chain‐end fidelity.

Abstract:Controlled radical polymerization (CRP) is a versatile way to control polymer microscopic structures through establishing a dynamic equilibrium between radical and dormant polymers. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), a typical case of CRP, has the ability to be conducted in mild conditions and produce uniformly distributed polymers. Moreover, the amount of metal addition can be greatly reduced in ATRP processes with the development of photochemical techniques. Photo induced ATRP (photoATRP) has a significant impact on sustainable production in industry. Modeling the microscopic quantities of polymers for photoATRP systems provides insights into the kinetic characteristics. In this work, a Monte Carlo (MC) approach, based on Gillespie’s stochastic simulation algorithm, is developed for the photoATRP processes at microscopic resolution. The length dependency of the individual chains on the radical, dormant, and dead polymer information is captured. The polymerization rate of PhotoATRP is sensitive to light irradiation. The polymerization process model of photoATRP systems based on the MC method for temporal control over polymer growth is established. Kinetic characteristics are studied from the developed model under the condition of light source intermittency. The developed MC model is validated against the deterministic method of moments (MoM) and experimental results.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with dual photoredox/copper catalysis combines the advantages of photo-ATRP and photoredox-mediated ATRP, utilizing visible light and ensuring broad monomer scope and solvent compatibility while minimizing side reactions. Despite its popularity, challenges include high photocatalyst (PC) loadings (10 to 1000 ppm), requiring additional purification and increasing costs. In this study, we discover a PC that functions at the sub-ppm level for ATRP through mechanism-driven PC design. Through studying polymerization mechanisms, we find that the efficient polymerizations are driven by PCs whose ground state oxidation potential—responsible for PC regeneration—play a more important role than their excited state reducing power, responsible for initiation. This is verified by screening PCs with varying redox potentials and triplet excited state generation capabilities. Based on these findings, we identify a highly efficient PC, 4DCDP-IPN, featuring moderate excited state reducing power and a maximized ground state oxidation potential. Employing this PC at 50 ppb, we synthesize poly(methyl methacrylate) with high conversion, narrow molecular weight distribution, and high chain-end fidelity. This system exhibits oxygen tolerance and supports large-scale reactions under ambient conditions. Our findings, driven by the systematic PC design, offer meaningful insights for controlled radical polymerizations and metallaphotoredox-mediated syntheses beyond ATRP.

Abstract:A new procedure for ultrasonication-induced atom transfer radical polymerization (sono-ATRP) in aqueous media was developed. Polymerizations of oligo(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate (OEOMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) in water were successfully carried out in the presence of ppm amounts of CuBr2 catalyst and tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligand when exposed to ultrasonication (40 kHz, 110 W) at room temperature. Aqueous sono-ATRP enabled polymerization of water-soluble monomers with excellent control over the molecular weight, dispersity, and high retention of chain-end functionality. Temporal control over the polymer chain growth was demonstrated by switching the ultrasound on/off due to the regeneration of activators by hydroxyl radicals formed by ultrasonication. The synthesis of a well-defined block copolymer and DNA-polymer biohybrid was also successful using this process.

Abstract:The rise of photoredox catalysis has extended the landscapeofreversible-deactivation radical polymerization. Recently, visible-light-drivenphotoredox/Cu dual catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization(photoATRP) has become an emerging trend, providing well-defined polymerunder low copper catalyst loading. In this work, we described a dualcatalyzed ATRP using CuBr2/tris-(2-pyridinylmethyl)-amine(TPMA) and donor-acceptor-type organophotoredox catalysts (OPCs)with visible light absorption. The excited state OPC can reduce bothdormant polymer chain-end and CuBr2/TPMA, generating propagatingradical species and CuBr/TPMA, respectively. This indicates that themechanism is a hybrid of organophotoredox-mediated and Cu-mediatedATRP. The photoATRP driven by 425 nm light irradiation produced aseries of well-defined polymethacrylates under extremely low catalystloadings (5 or 10 ppm CuBr2 and 1 ppm OPC relative to monomer).The method also showed excellent temporal control over polymerizationand oxygen tolerance.
Mechanism of Photoinduced Metal-Free Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization: Experimental and Computational Studies.

Abstract:Photoinduced metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate was investigated using several phenothiazine derivatives and other related compounds as photoredox catalysts. The experiments show that all selected catalysts can be involved in the activation step, but not all of them participated efficiently in the deactivation step. The redox properties and the stability of radical cations derived from the catalysts were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry. Laser flash photolysis (LFP) was used to determine the lifetime and activity of photoexcited catalysts. Kinetic analysis of the activation reaction according to dissociative electron-transfer (DET) theory suggests that the activation occurs only with an excited state of catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the structures and stabilities of the radical cation intermediates as well as the reaction energy profiles of deactivation pathways with different photoredox catalysts. Both experiments and calculations suggest that the activation process undergoes a DET mechanism, while an associative electron transfer involving a termolecular encounter (the exact reverse of DET pathway) is favored in the deactivation process. This detailed study provides a deeper understanding of the chemical processes of metal-free ATRP that can aid the design of better catalytic systems. Additionally, this work elucidates several important common pathways involved in synthetically useful organic reactions catalyzed by photoredox catalysts.
Photoredox Organocatalysts with Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence for Visible-Light-Driven Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract:Photoredox catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-ATRP) has emerged as a fundamental and powerful polymerization method. Herein we report a class of facilely synthesized N-aryl phenoxazines that serves as highly efficient visible-light-driven photoredox organocatalysts. The strategy of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) was introduced with the organocatalysts by constructing an orthogonally linked D-A molecular configuration. The offset between the lowest singlet S-1 and lowest triplet T-1 excited states (Delta E-ST) is less than 0.30 eV in TADF molecules. The small Delta E-ST (<0.1 eV) and the long-lived excited states (>0.1 mu s) of the organocatalysts were confirmed by theoretical and experimental studies. The combination of a strong electron donor and weak electron acceptors endows the molecules with high-lying HOMOs and LUMOs, which provide a sufficiently negative excited state reduction potential E-0(PC center dot+/PC*) of ca. -1.5 V. The catalysts were applied in the photo-ATRP of methyl methacrylate using ethyl alpha-bromophenylacetate as the initiator under white-light irradiation. The photo-ATRP was successfully conducted with catalyst loadings as low as 30 ppm. The monomer scope was expanded to benzyl methacrylate (BnMA) and acrylate butyl methacrylate (BMA). Finally, the block polymer P(MMA-b-BnMA) was synthesized, demonstrating the high chain-end fidelity of the polymers.

Abstract:A kinetic model has been developed using the method of moment for surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (s-ATRP) from flat solid surfaces based on a moving boundary physical model. The model is verified with the experimental data of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine from silicon wafer, which were carried out by either adding free initiator (Method I) or excess deactivator (Method II) to the solution. It is shown through the modeling that Method II gives better control over polymer molecular weight and thicker graft layer under similar conditions than Method I. A new mechanism is proposed for the radical termination based on the fact that the rapid activation/deactivation cycle reactions facilitate "migration" of radical centers on the surface. The rate constant of "migration termination" is thus catalyst concentration dependent with higher catalyst concentration resulting in higher termination. Lowering catalyst concentration suppressed migration termination that could improve the control and livingness of s-ATRP. However, there exists a catalyst concentration for the optimal control performance.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) can be carried out in a flask completely open to air using a biocatalytic system composed of glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) with an active copper catalyst complex. Nanomolar concentrations of the enzymes and ppm amounts of Cu provided excellent control over the polymerization of oligo(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate (OEOMA500 ), generating polymers with high molecular weight (Mn >70 000) and low dispersities (1.13≤Đ≤1.27) in less than an hour. The continuous oxygen supply was necessary for the generation of radicals and polymer chain growth as demonstrated by temporal control and by inducing hypoxic conditions. In addition, the enzymatic cascade polymerization triggered by oxygen was used for a protein and DNA functionalized with initiators to form protein-b-POEOMA and DNA-b-POEOMA bioconjugates, respectively.

Abstract:Photomediated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (photoATRP) is an activator regeneration method, which allows for the controlled synthesis of well-defined polymers via light irradiation. Traditional photoATRP is often limited by the need for high-energy ultraviolet or violet light. These could negatively affect the control and selectivity of the polymerization, promote side reactions, and may not be applicable to biologically relevant systems. This drawback can be circumvented by an introduction of the catalytic amount of photocatalysts, which absorb visible and/or NIR light and, therefore, controlled, regenerative ATRP can be performed with the dual-catalytic cycle. Herein, a critical summary of recent developments in the field of dual-catalysis concerning Cu-catalyzed ATRP is provided. Contributions of involved species are examined mechanistically, followed by challenges and future directions towards the next generation of advanced functional macromolecular materials.

Abstract:Photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been mainly explored using copper-based catalytic systems. Recently developed iron-catalyzed photochemical ATRP employed high amounts of iron catalysts under high-energy UV light irradiation. Herein, a successful photoinduced iron-catalyzed ATRP mediated under blue light irradiation with ppm amounts (100-400 ppm) of iron(III) bromide/tetrabutylammonium bromide as the catalyst is reported. Several methacrylate monomers were polymerized with excellent control providing molecular weight in good agreement With theoretical values and low dispersity (D < 1.20). Near-quantitative monomer conversions (similar to 95%) enabled in situ chain extension and block copolymerization, indicating high retention of chain-end functionality. Notably, this system can tolerate oxygen, enabling synthesis of well-defined polymers with good chain-end functionality in the presence of air.

Abstract:It is well known that the recently developed photoinduced metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been considered as a promising methodology to completely eliminate transition metal residue in polymers. However, a serious problem needs to be improved, namely, large amount of organic photocatalysts should be used to keep the controllability over molecular weights and molecular weight distributions. In this work, a novel photocatalyst 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene (4CzIPN) with strong excited state reduction potential is successfully used to mediate a metal-free ATRP of methyl methacrylate just with parts per million (ppm) level usage under irradiation of blue light emitting diode at room temperature, using ethyl α-bromophenyl-acetate as a typical initiator with high initiator efficiency. The polymerization kinetic study, multiple controlled "on-off" light switching cycle regulation, and chain extension experiment confirm the "living"/controlled features of this promising photoinduced metal-free ATRP system with good molecular weight control in the presence of ppm level photocatalyst 4CzIPN.

Abstract:This review focuses on recent progress in photo‐ATRP utilizing a wide variety of heterogeneous photocatalysts, encompassing metal semiconductor nanoparticles, quantum dot, upconversion nanoparticles, metal–organic frames, covalent–organic frames, conjugated microporous polymers, hypercrosslinked polymer, and carbon‐based materials. Photo‐ATRP technique has garnered significant attention due to its multitude of advantages, including its ability to be conducted under mild reaction conditions, user‐friendly nature, and exceptional efficiency in polymerization. The heterogeneous photocatalysts not only exhibit exceptional quantum efficiency, but also possess a versatile bandgap that can be finely adjusted to accommodate a wide range of absorption wavelengths within the visible light spectrum, thereby emphasizing their potential for efficient recovery and reuse. The utilization of a variety of heterogeneous photocatalysts in photo‐ATRP presents notable benefits for numerous applications, such as the lack of any remaining substances, simplicity in usage, and potential for reuse. Abstract:A novel photo-induced homogeneous atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) system is constructed using an organic copper salt (Cu(SC(S)N(C2H5)(2))(2)) as a photo-induced catalyst at 30 degrees C. Herein, N,N,N',N ", N"'-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) is used as a ligand, ethyl 2-bromophenylacetate (EBPA) as an ATRP initiator, and (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) as a photo-induced radical initiator to establish an ICAR (initiators for continuous activator regeneration) ATRP using methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a modal monomer. The effect of the concentration of the organic copper on the polymerization is investigated in detail. It is found that well-controlled polymerization can be obtained even with the amount of (Cu(SC(S)N(C2H5)(2))(2) decreasing to a 1.56 ppm level, with the molecular weight of the resultant polymers increasing linearly with monomer conversion while maintaining a narrow molecular weight distribution ((M) over bar (w)/(M) over bar (n) < 1.3).
Oxygen‐enhanced superoxido copper‐catalyzed ATRP accelerated by light

Abstract:Oxygen‐enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) via the formation of a superoxido copper complex, has recently emerged as a powerful tool for the synthesis of well‐defined polymers. However, relatively long reaction times (>8 h) were required to reach high monomer conversions. Herein, we explore the influence of light in this new polymerization procedure. Under UV irradiation, a significant enhancement over the polymerization rate was observed resulting in near‐quantitative monomer consumption (>90%) within 2 h and narrow molar mass distributions (Đ = 1.07). The rate acceleration was attributed to the fast reduction of the superoxido copper complex to Cu(I)Br under UV irradiation, as confirmed via detailed UV–Vis kinetic experiments. In addition, the induction period was completely eliminated, which is in stark contrast to conventional photo‐ATRP (utilizing Cu(II)Br), thus further highlighting the superiority of the presented system. The synergy of the superoxido complex and UV irradiation enabled the synthesis of low‐dispersity homopolymers with molecular weights ranging from 6000 to 300,000. Abstract:In this work, a photoinduced iron(III)-based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) without any reducing agents and additional initiators was suggested. In addition, detailed kinetic studies, including the effects of ligand and catalyst concentrations on polymerization kinetics, and the polymerization behaviors using various solvents and monomer types were evaluated for this new polymerization technique. Results showed that photoinduced iron(III)-mediated ATRP using 5000 ppm catalyst loading with 1 equiv of ligand in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) produced poly(methyl methacrylate) with low molecular weight distribution (M-w/M-n < 1.45) and that the evolution of molecular weight (Mn) was linearly related to monomer conversion. 1HNMR analysis confirmed that the resulting polymer prepared through photoinduced ATRP in the present work was initiated by methyl 2,3-dichloroisobutyrate. Facile temporal control and the successful chain extension highlighted the good chain-end functionality of the resulting polymers. In short, this work provided a study on additional alkyl halides initiator-free ATRP and its application in the synthesis of methacrylate polymers with narrow M-w/M-n.
In-depth mechanistic and kinetic investigation of sonochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization using modeling approach

Abstract:Mechano/sonochemically mediated reversible deactivation radical polymerization has attracted great attention because of the novel electron transfer regulation process and high-efficient process intensification on mass transfer. Herein, a multi-scale modeling strategy combining quantum chemical calculation and kinetic modeling was developed for sonochemically induced electron transfer controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (SET-ATRP) to study the complicated SET process and its effects on polymerization. At the molecular scale, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to acquire the electron characteristic and structure–reactivity of the reactants, intermediates and products during SET process, which provides guideline to figure out the underlying mechanism. Results showed that DMSO •• generated under ultrasonication could react with free Me 6 TREN to induce electron transfer for the reduction of Cu II Br/L + to produce Cu I /L + , which is the key step for a successful polymerization. The corresponding elementary reaction rate coefficients were calculated by thermodynamic formulae combining transition state theory and Marcus theory. At the micro-scale, kinetic modeling based on method of moment was established to account for the role of SET process in regulating polymerization. Good agreements between the simulation results and experimental data confirmed the reliability of the as-developed multi-scale modeling strategy. More Me 6 TREN and Cu II Br/L + resulted in more electron transfer and faster polymerization rate. This work provides an in-depth mechanism insights and kinetic understanding for SET-ATRP, which has a promising potential to promote its progress of application.
