However, they are difficult to be effectively identified in the seismic profile by conventional techniques such as variance slicing, because they are clear in the deep part but vague in the shallow (both in the vertical and map views). Previous studies suggest the good response of stress field to weak strike-slip faults. Accordingly, this study proposes a three-dimensional stress body-based weak strike-slip fault identification technique. First, the relationship between formation deformation, lithologic variation, and stress field is established. Specifically, the structural curvature body is used to represent the formation deformation, which is obtained by scanning of the body dip angle and second-order derivation of the wave number domain, while Poisson’s ratio and Young’s modulus data volumes are employed to reflect the spatial lithologic variation, which are calculated by the multivariate linear fitting method. Finally, the three-dimensional stress body is determined according to the relational equation, and subsequently the weak strike-slip faults are effectively identified. This study takes the No.1 Fault in the LD Structure, Liaodong Bay Area, Bohai Bay Basin as an example. It has obvious strike-slip features in the deep part, but it is difficult to be identified on the shallow (2300 ms) variance slice. Moreover, the fault displacement in some seismic profiles is quite small. Such fault is a typically weak strike-slip fault. Through application of the proposed technique, this study identifies the NE-extended stress concentration zones in both deep and shallow parts, which share similar strikes and characteristics with No.2 Fault, a strong strike-slip fault that has been confirmed in the neighboring area, thus confirming the existence of No.1 Fault in the shallow layer. Through seismic interpretation using the proposed technique, a series of structural traps are pinpointed, which promotes the exploration process in the area. In general, this technique can well identify weak strike-slip faults and corresponding interpretation of them has important significance for their exploration in the relatively mature regions.Presentation Date: Wednesday, October 17, 2018Start Time: 8:30:00 AMLocation: 210A (Anaheim Convention Center)Presentation Type: OralKeywords: 3D, faults, interpretation, time slicePermalink: https://doi.org/10.1190/segam2018-2998430.1FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 2018ISSN (print):1052-3812 ISSN (online):1949-4645Copyright: 2018 Pages: 5520 publication data© 2018 Published in electronic format with permission by the Society of Exploration GeophysicistsPublisher:Society of Exploration Geophysicists HistoryPublished Online: 27 Aug 2018 CITATION INFORMATION Kui Wu, Lin Kang, Zhongqiao Zhang, Jinghua Gao, Wei Wang, and Gaige Wang, (2018), "A three-dimensional stress body-based weak strike-slip fault identification technique," SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts : 1659-1663. https://doi.org/10.1190/segam2018-2998430.1 Plain-Language Summary Keywords3Dfaultsinterpretationtime slicePDF DownloadLoading ...
