Abstract:With the rapid development of water transportation, ship safety supervision is facing more severe pressures and challenges. Precise and efficient detection of ship targets is becoming more and more important, which urgently requires intelligent detection methods to ultimately improves shipping management efficiency. However, the surveillance video of waterway transportation is often influenced by fog and rain, which can affect the performance of object detection and reduce the efficiency of management. The current traditional object approaches are hard to handle these problems. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-modal information fusion method to handle multi-object detection in waterway transportation, which introduces the LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) dataset to add spatial information and handle the interference of fog and rain. The target ROI (Region Of Interest) point cloud and image data are initially fused in the pre-fusion stage. This phase can efficiently direct the network’s attention to the region with the highest target probability, increasing the target recall rate. The 3D bounding box in the point cloud and 2D bounding boxes in the image retrieved are then fused in the post-fusion stage to improve target precision and enrich target detection information. Finally, using time synchronization and a space transformation matrix, the detection result is transferred to the picture coordinate system to create a ship image target with 3D depth information. This technique overcomes the constraints of single-sensor environment perception, adapts to the detection of ship targets in a variety of situations, and is more precise and robust. The algorithm’s superiority is also demonstrated by the experiments.

Abstract:The task of ship target detection based on remote sensing images has attracted more and more attention because of its important value in civil and military fields. To solve the problem of low accuracy in ship target detection in optical remote sensing ship images due to complex scenes and large-target-scale differences, an improved R(3)Det algorithm is proposed in this paper. On the basis of R(3)Det, a feature pyramid network (FPN) structure is replaced by a search architecture-based feature pyramid network (NAS FPN) so that the network can adaptively learn and select the feature combination update and enrich the multiscale feature information. After the feature extraction network, a shallow feature is added to the context information enhancement (COT) module to supplement the small target semantic information. An efficient channel attention (ECA) module is added to make the network gather in the target area. The improved algorithm is applied to the ship data in the remote sensing image data set FAIR1M. The effectiveness of the improved model in a complex environment and for small target detection is verified through comparison experiments with R(3)Det and other models.

Abstract:The active recognition of interesting targets has been a vital issue for remote sensing. In this paper, a novel multi-source fusion method for ship target detection and recognition is proposed. By introducing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor images, the proposed method solves the problem of precision degradation in optical remote sensing image target detection and recognition caused by the limit of illumination and weather conditions. The proposed method obtains port slice images containing ship targets by fusing optical data with SAR data. On this basis, spectral residual saliency and region growth method are used to detect ship targets in optical image, while SAR data are introduced to improve the accuracy of ship detection based on joint shape analysis and multi-feature classification. Finally, feature point matching, contour extraction and brightness saliency are used to detect the ship parts, and the ship target types are identified according to the voting results of part information. The proposed ship detection method obtained 91.43% recognition accuracy. The results showed that this paper provides an effective and efficient ship target detection and recognition method based on multi-source remote sensing images fusion.

Abstract:Environmental perception is a crucial requirement of Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) if required to perform tasks safely in a dynamically complex operational environment. Most existing methods for ship detection rely on camera-based methods, which are sensitive to environmental conditions and cannot directly provide spatial location information related to detected targets. To overcome this limitation, we propose a LiDAR-based ship detection and tracking framework that can be applied to busy maritime environments. The proposed framework consists of two functional modules: a ship detection and multi-object tracking. For ship detection, a modularised network structure was adapted, allowing for ease of switching between different types of detection network to prioritise either detection accuracy, detection speed or a compromise of both, depending on the task requirements. A Kalman Filter-based multi-object tracking method is also implemented to compensate for any detections that may have been missed as a result of ship motions or occlusions, relying solely on the detection results. We also collected the first-ever real-world LiDAR dataset for maritime applications across the River Thames and marinas, including a range of ship types, with lengths ranging from 5 m up to 40 m, and different hull types. The datasets are organised in a similar manner to the KITTI datasets, which can be easily applied to the well-developed point cloud detection networks. Remarkably, our methods achieve an overall detection accuracy of 74.1% in the collected datasets. The proposed framework and dataset make LiDAR-based environmental perception feasible for implementation in ASVs and support development in the autonomous maritime navigation field.

Abstract:Robust scene perception is an essential prerequisite to ensure the reliability in ship autonomous driving. However, it is a challenging task in inland river because of the complicated and changeable environment as well as high-density ships in narrow waterway. As one of the primary technologies, obstacle trajectory locating and tracking has been widely explored in recent years. Current approaches strictly rely on lidar as only depth awareness sensor and the limited measurement range severely restricts them for distant object identification. On this account, we creatively propose a point cloud-light field fusion perception framework in this paper for the first time. Specifically, in detection stage, the former undertakes precise close object perception and the latter completes distant object locating through light field stereo matching. In tracking stage, a novel four-phase data association that combines multiple attributes from position, point cloud and image domains is utilized for accurate object matching across frames. To validate the effectiveness of our multimodal perception strategy, we implement an acquisition system consisting of two lidars and four sets of simplified light field cameras on a ship to conduct actual testing. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed framework achieves superior 3D object locating and tracking performance, far surpassing the state-of-the-art methods in terms of accuracy and real-time.

Abstract:To address the problem of ship target detection in optical remote sensing images under complex sea surface landform and cloud background conditions, an unsupervised ship target detection algorithm that combines the visual salient features of spatial and frequency domains is proposed. First, based on the RGH color space and the ITTI model of the images, image features arc constructed using a combination of image brightness feature map, color feature map, and one-step brightness feature. Moreover, the regional difference in the image is calculated using the covariance matrix of the image region and the entire image. Further, the spatial-domain salient feature map is constructed using the generalized eigenvalue of the covariance matrix, and the frequency-domain salient feature map of the phase spectrum of quatcrnion Fourier transform (PQFT) model is added. Finally, the spatial-and frequency-domain salient features arc combined using cellular automata. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to other visual salient algorithms commonly used for ship target detection.

Abstract:The detection and recognition of ships holds crucial significance across various domains, including transportation, fishing, smuggling prevention, and rescue operations. To achieve accurate and efficient ship detection and recognition, remote sensing technologies, specifically, optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors, have been widely employed. However, each sensor modality presents its own limitations, such as cloud cover in optical images and interference in SAR images, resulting in restricted data availability and false alarms during detection. This article provides a comprehensive summary of recent advancements in the fusion of optical and SAR images for ship detection and recognition. Meanwhile, the fusion of remote sensing images and in situ data, such as automatic identification system (AIS) data, is briefly summarized, considering significant benefits and technical trends. This article highlights the immense potential of integrating these two sensor modalities to overcome individual challenges and enhance overall system performance. One of the primary challenges addressed in this work pertains to accurately matching ship targets between optical and SAR images when ships change positions. However, recently developed multimodal fusion networks and transfer learning techniques have the potential to tackle the challenges, even with unmatched optical and SAR image pairs. In addition to summarizing existing techniques, the article delves into future perspectives on fusion-based ship detection and recognition. In conclusion, this survey highlights the current state of optical and SAR image fusion techniques, pinpoints existing challenges, and outlines future research prospects, emphasizing the significance of fusion-based approaches in shaping the future of maritime applications.

Abstract:<span>In view of characteristics of the ship in the optical remote-sensing image, such as multiple dimensions, majority of small objects, crowded arrangement and complex background, and so on, the paper presents a ship detection framework combining the network-fusing multi-level features crossing levels, the rotation region proposal network and the bidirectional recurrent neural network fusing self-attention mechanism. Firstly, we set up a network fusing multi-level features crossing levels because of the multiple scales and diverse characteristics of the remote-sensing ships to increase the precision of feature extraction of the ship, thus improving the performance in the multiple scales, small objects, and complex background problems. Secondly, we separately design the ROI Pooling Layer and the bidirectional recurrent neural network fusing self-attention mechanism, which infuses the prior information of ship dimension and position to realize a good performance and precise ship positioning in crowded scenes. Finally, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through experiments, the experimental dataset includes the private dataset designed by us based on Google Earth, the ship dataset in DOTA-Ship and HRSC2016 public ship dataset. The results verify the contributions of each proposed module, and the comparison results show that our proposed method has a state-of-the-art performance.</span>

Abstract:Abstract As autonomous ships become the future trend for maritime transportation, it is of importance to develop intelligent autonomous navigation systems to ensure the navigation safety of ships. Among the three core components (sensing, planning and control modules) of the system, an accurate detection of target ships’ navigation information is critical. Within a typical maritime environment, the existence of sensor noises as well as the influences generated by varying environment conditions largely limit the reliability of using a single sensor for environment awareness. It is therefore vital to use multiple sensors together with a multi-sensor data fusion technology to improve the detection performance. In this paper, a fuzzy logic-based multi-sensor data fusion algorithm for moving target ships detection has been proposed and designed using both AIS and radar information. A two-stage fuzzy logic association method has been particularly developed and integrated with Kalman filtering to achieve a computationally efficient performance. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been tested and validated in simulations where multiple target ships are transiting with complex movements.

Abstract:Intelligent detection and recognition of ships from high-resolution remote sensing images is an extraordinarily useful task in civil and military reconnaissance. It is difficult to detect ships with high precision because various disturbances are present in the sea such as clouds, mist, islands, coastlines, ripples, and so on. To solve this problem, we propose a novel ship detection network based on multi-layer convolutional feature fusion (CFF-SDN). Our ship detection network consists of three parts. Firstly, the convolutional feature extraction network is used to extract ship features of different levels. Residual connection is introduced so that the model can be designed very deeply, and it is easy to train and converge. Secondly, the proposed network fuses fine-grained features from shallow layers with semantic features from deep layers, which is beneficial for detecting ship targets with different sizes. At the same time, it is helpful to improve the localization accuracy and detection accuracy of small objects. Finally, multiple fused feature maps are used for classification and regression, which can adapt to ships of multiple scales. Since the CFF-SDN model uses a pruning strategy, the detection speed is greatly improved. In the experiment, we create a dataset for ship detection in remote sensing images (DSDR), including actual satellite images from Google Earth and aerial images from electro-optical pod. The DSDR dataset contains not only visible light images, but also infrared images. To improve the robustness to various sea scenes, images under different scales, perspectives and illumination are obtained through data augmentation or affine transformation methods. To reduce the influence of atmospheric absorption and scattering, a dark channel prior is adopted to solve atmospheric correction on the sea scenes. Moreover, soft non-maximum suppression (NMS) is introduced to increase the recall rate for densely arranged ships. In addition, better detection performance is observed in comparison with the existing models in terms of precision rate and recall rate. The experimental results show that the proposed detection model can achieve the superior performance of ship detection in optical remote sensing image.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the safety supervision of inland vessels. This paper especially aims at studying the vessel target detection and dynamic tracking algorithm based on computer vision and the target fusion algorithm based on multisensor. For the vessel video target detection and tracking, this paper analyzes the current widely used methods and theories. Additionally, facing the application scenarios and characteristics of inland vessels, a comprehensive vessel video target detection algorithm is proposed in this paper. It is combined with a three-frame difference method based on Canny edge detection and a background subtraction method based on mixed Gaussian background modeling. Besides, for the multisensor target fusion, the processing method of laser point cloud data and automatic identification system (AIS) data is analyzed in this paper. Based on the idea of fuzzy mathematics, this paper proposes a method for calculating the fuzzy correlation matrix with normal membership function, which realizes the fusion of vessel track features of laser point cloud data and AIS data under dynamic video correction. Finally, through this method, a set of vessel situation active intelligent perception systems based on multisensor fusion was developed. Experiments show that this method has better environmental applicability and detection accuracy than traditional manual detection and any single monitoring method.

Abstract:The detection and identification of the kinds of ships, i.e., warship or merchant ship, is of great interest for military use. Ships are usually detected and recognized based on ship physical fields, and the commonly used ship physical fields include sound field, magnetic field, hydraulic pressure field, electric field, gravity field, etc, which all contain plenty of discriminative information. However, the existing ship identification methods are usually based on single ship physical field, which will limit the model performance. In this work, we proposed a ship recognition method based on combination of multi-physical fields, i.e., sound field and magnetic field. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first work to recognize ships based on multi-physical fields. We fuse features extracted from multi-physical fields by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), which is then fed to Support Vector Machine (SVM) to realize the recognition of ship. Plenty of experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Deep learning has led to impressive performance on a variety of object detection tasks recently. But it is rarely applied in ship detection of SAR images. The paper aims to introduce the detector based on deep learning into this field. We analyze the advantages of the state-of-the-art Faster R-CNN detector in computer vision and limitations in our specific domain. Given this analysis we proposed a new dataset and four strategies to improve the standard Faster R-CNN algorithm. The dataset contains ships in various environments, such as image resolution, ship size, sea condition, and sensor type, it can be a benchmark for researchers to evaluate their algorithms. The strategies include feature fusion, transfer learning, hard negative mining, and other implementation details. We conducted some comparison and ablation experiments on our dataset. The result shows that our proposed method obtains better accuracy and less test cost. We believe that SAR ship detection method based on deep learning must be the focus of future research.

Abstract:The autonomous navigation of unmanned surface vehicles (USV) depends mainly on effective ship target detection to the nearby water area. The difficulty of target detection for USV derives from the complexity of the external environment, such as the light reflection and the cloud or mist shield. Accordingly, this paper proposes a target detection technology for USV on the basis of the EfficientDet algorithm. The ship features fusion is performed by Bi-directional Feature Pyra-mid Network (BiFPN), in which the pre-trained EfficientNet via ImageNet is taken as the backbone network, then the detection speed is increased by group normalization. Compared with the Faster-RCNN and Yolo V3, the ship target detection accuracy is greatly improved to 87.5% in complex environments. The algorithm can be applied to the identification of dynamic targets on the sea, which provides a key reference for the autonomous navigation of USV and the military threats assessment on the sea surface.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel ship detection method based on multi-visual features after analyzing the characteristics of ship in the sea. According to the principal of the visual contrast, brightness and orientation saliency map of ship object are respectively generated, and then they are integrated to obtain the total saliency map. In addition to the brightness and orientation of the ship objects, the method doesn’t use other prior knowledge of them. In ship detection experiment, the experimental results prove our method can effectively concentrate on the ship objects regardless of their size and brightness, and thereby improve the capacity of visual attention in complex scene. Thus, the design idea of our method is verified.

Abstract:Fusing features from different layers is essential to improve the ship target detection ability in the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Mainstream methods usually perform simple addition or concatenation operations on adjacent feature layers without properly merging their semantic and spatial information, whereas the traditional skip connections are unable to explore sufficient information by the same scale. To address these issues, a ship detection network based on adjacent context guide fusion module and dense weighted skip connection (AFDN) in SAR images is proposed: Adjacent context guide fusion module is specially designed to capture the long-range dependencies of high-level features as weights to multiply with low-level features to fuse adjacent features more efficiently. Furthermore, the dual-path enhanced pyramid is constructed to refine and fuse multi-scale features. Finally, a dense weighted skip connection is proposed by weighted fusion of features of all sizes before the decoder to enrich the feature space. Our anchor-free AFDN outputs the spatial density map and clusters to obtain the rotatable bounding box. The experimental results indicate that the method proposed in this paper surpasses previous ship detection methods and achieves high accuracy on SSDD and AIRSARShip-1.0 datasets.
A machine vision method for the evaluation of ship-to-ship collision risk

Abstract:The development of ship technology and information technology has been driving the continuous improvement of ship intelligence, with safety being an inevitable requirement in the shipping industry. A machine vision-based ship collision warning method is proposed for high monitoring system cost and limited information acquisition in safety design of autonomous ship navigation. The method combines machine learning with image algorithms. Firstly, the backbone of YOLOv7 detector is replaced by EfficientFormerV2 network to achieve model lightweight while ensuring detection accuracy. Public datasets SeaShips, Flow and self-made ship pictures are combined, and the network is trained on this dataset. StrongSORT is used for target tracking. Secondly, a data fusion algorithm is introduced to determine the target point at the bow-bottom of the ship based on the time-varying attitude of the camera and the time-series features of the bounding boxes. Ship navigation trajectory estimation is performed using image algorithms. Finally, a collision evaluation model is established to calculate the collision risk index. Experimental results demonstrate that the improved YOLOv7 network maintains similar mAP.5 and Recall compared to the original model, while reducing the parameters by 31.2 % and GFLOPs by 58.4 %. The accuracy of target ship trajectory estimation is high, with MAE values below 1.5 % and RMSE values below 2 % in experiments. In ship collision warning experiments, the proposed method accurately identifies navigating vessels, estimates the trajectories, and provides timely warnings for imminent collision accidents. Compared to traditional ship collision warning methods, this paper offers a more intelligent and lightweight solution.

Abstract:Ship detection in SAR images is a challenging problem. CNN-based ship detection method in SAR images has achieved remarkable results. Due to the multi scale of the ships and interference from complex sea conditions or nearshore background in SAR images, many false alarms and missed detections can occur in ship detection. To solve these problems, a multi-scale ship detection network in SAR images based on attention and weighted fusion is proposed in this paper. First, a higher-resolution detect head is added based on the YOLOv5 framework for detecting tiny-scale ships in SAR images. Then, the coordinate attention block is introduced to refine the location features of ship targets and suppress the interference of complex background. Finally, in the feature fusion stage, adaptive weighted feature fusion is used to reduce feature redundancy. Experiments on the SSDD dataset show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Ship detection is one of the most important applications of target recognition based on optical remote sensing images. In this paper, we propose an uncertain ship target extraction algorithm based on dynamic fusion model of multi-feature and variance feature of optical remote sensing image. We choose several geometrical features, such as length, wide, rectangular ratio, tightness ratio and so on, using SVM to train and predict the uncertain ship targets extracted by our algorithm automatically. Experiments show that our algorithm is very robust, and the recognition rate of our algorithm can reach or even better than 95%, with the false alarm rate is kept at 3%.

Abstract:In the problem of ship detection in complex scenes, in addition to the characteristics of ship targets, there is rich semantic information in the global and local background of the whole scenes, which provides more valuable inference information for ship detection. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a ship detection method in complex scenes considering both global and local information perception for SAR images. Firstly, the proposed method detects the globally stable region and the locally significant region respectively, and then designs a judgment method combining the two to eliminate false alarms, so as to ensure that the detected target has both globally stable characteristics and locally significant characteristics. The detection performance of the proposed method is verified by the spaceborne SAR images covering the coastal areas. The result shows that the proposed method can effectively detect ships in complex scenes, especially eliminating most false alarms in land areas.
