Abstract:The ability to control the instantaneous state of light, from high-energy pulses down to the single-photon level, is an indispensable requirement in photonics. This has, for example, facilitated spatiotemporal probing and coherent control of ultrafast light-matter interactions, and enabled capabilities such as generation of exotic states of light with complexity, or at wavelengths, that are not easily accessible. Here, by leveraging the multifunctional control of light at the nanoscale offered by metasurfaces embedded in a Fourier transform setup, we present a versatile approach to synthesize ultrafast optical transients with arbitrary control over its complete spatiotemporal evolution. Our approach, supporting an ultrawide bandwidth with simultaneously high spectral and spatial resolution, enables ready synthesis of complex states of structured space-time wave packets. We expect our results to offer unique capabilities in coherent ultrafast light-matter interactions and facilitate applications in microscopy, communications, and nonlinear optics.
Temporally and Longitudinally Tailored Dynamic Space-Time Wave Packets

Abstract:In general, space-time wave packets with correlations between transverse spatial fields and temporal frequency spectra can lead to unique spatiotemporal dynamics, thus enabling control of the instantaneous light properties. However, spatiotemporal dynamics generated in previous approaches manifest themselves at a given propagation distance yet not arbitrarily tailored longitudinally. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new versatile class of judiciously synthesized wave packets whose spatiotemporal evolution can be arbitrarily engineered to take place at various predesigned distances along the longitudinal propagation path. Spatiotemporal synthesis is achieved by introducing a 2-dimensional spectrum comprising both temporal and longitudinal wavenumbers associated with specific transverse Bessel-Gaussian fields. The resulting spectra are then employed to produce wave packets evolving in both time and axial distance - in full accord with the theoretical analysis. In this respect, various light degrees of freedom can be independently manipulated, such as intensity, polarization, and transverse spatial distribution (e.g., orbital angular momentum). Through a temporal-longitudinal frequency comb spectrum, we simulate the synthesis of the aforementioned wave packet properties, indicating a decrease in relative error compared to the desired phenomena as more spectral components are incorporated. Additionally, we experimentally demonstrate tailorable spatiotemporal fields carrying time- and longitudinal-varying orbital angular momentum, such that the local topological charge evolves every ~1 ps in the time domain and 10 cm axially. We believe that our space-time wave packets can significantly expand the exploration of spatiotemporal dynamics in the longitudinal dimension, and potentially enable novel applications in ultrafast microscopy, light-matter interactions, and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Synthetic dimensions in photonic structures provide unique opportunities for actively manipulating light in multiple degrees of freedom. Here, we theoretically explore a dispersive waveguide under the dynamic phase modulation that supports single pulse manipulations in the synthetic (2+1) dimensions. Compared with the counterpart of the conventional (2+1) space-time, we explore temporal diffraction and frequency conversion in a synthetic time-frequency space while the pulse evolves along the spatial dimension. By introducing the effective gauge potential well for photons in the synthetic time-frequency space with the control of the modulation phase, we show that a rich set of pulse propagation behaviors can be achieved, including confined pulse propagation, fast/slow light, and pulse compression. With the additional nonlinear oscillation subject to the effective force along the frequency axis of light, we provide an exotic approach for actively manipulating the single pulse in both temporal and spectral domains, which shows the great promise for applications of the pulse processing and optical communications in integrated photonics.

Abstract:Active metasurfaces enable dynamic manipulation of the scattered electromagnetic wavefront by spatially varying the phase and amplitude across arrays of subwavelength scatterers, imparting momentum to outgoing light. Similarly, periodic temporal modulation of active metasurfaces allows for manipulation of the output frequency of light. Here we combine spatial and temporal modulation in electrically modulated reflective metasurfaces operating at 1,530 nm to generate and diffract a spectrum of sidebands at megahertz frequencies. Temporal modulation with tailored waveforms enables the design of a spectrum of sidebands. By impressing a spatial phase gradient on the metasurface, we can diffract selected combinations of sideband frequencies. Combining active temporal and spatial variation can enable unique optical functions, such as frequency mixing, harmonic beam steering or shaping, and breaking of Lorentz reciprocity.

Abstract:The availability of high-energy pulses with durations shorter than the period of their carrier frequency (sub-cycle) will reveal new regimes of strong-field light–matter interactions. Parametric waveform synthesis (that is, the coherent combination of carrier-envelope-phase-stable pulses that emerge from different optical parametric amplifiers) is a promising technology for the realization of tailored optical waveforms with scalable spectral bandwidth, energy and average power. Here we use parametric waveform synthesis to generate phase-controlled sub-cycle waveforms at the millijoule energy level with excellent stability. Full control over the synthesized waveforms (currently spanning 1.7 octaves with full-width at half-maximum durations down to 2.8 fs, that is, 0.6 optical cycles at a central wavelength of 1.4 μm) enables the creation of extreme ultraviolet isolated attosecond pulses via high-harmonic generation without the need for additional gating techniques. The synthesized electric field is directly measured by attosecond-resolution sampling, which also showcases the waveform stability.

Abstract:Uninhibited control of the complex spatiotemporal quantum wave function of a single photon has so far remained elusive even though it can dramatically increase the encoding flexibility and thus the information capacity of a photonic quantum link. By fusing temporal waveform generation in an atomic ensemble and spatial single-photon shaping, we hereby demonstrate for the first time complete spatiotemporal control of a propagation invariant (2+1)D Airy single-photon optical bullet. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel method for a radio-frequency photonic arbitrary waveform generator based on a tunable, multiwavelength pulse sequence and wavelength-to-time mapping induced by fiber chromatic dispersion. We simulate and experimentally demonstrate the generation of an arbitrary waveform and obtain burst single-tone, frequency modulation, and phase modulation signals. Abstract:Temporal waveform manipulation is a fundamental functionality in optics and crucial for applications like optical communications, microwave photonics and quantum optics. Traditional IQ- or phase-amplitude modulators shape light by carving energy from the input lightwave and are thus fundamentally lossy, and cannot apply independent modulation to multiple input wavelengths simultaneously. Taking inspiration from the space-time duality, we produce arbitrary unitary spectro-temporal transformations on multiple temporal input vectors with a modulation structure comprising of only lossless phase modulation and dispersive allpass filtering. The bandwidth of the output waveforms is not restricted by the driving electronics and independent transformations can be performed simultaneously on multiple orthogonal inputs such as spectrally separated frequency tones. This overcomes the main limitations of traditional electro-optic modulators and offers fundamental new insight into temporal wave manipulation.

Abstract:Multimode optical fibers represent the ideal platform for transferring multidimensional light states. However, dispersion degrades the correlations between the light's degrees of freedom, thus limiting the effective transport of ultrashort pulses between distant nodes of optical networks. Here, we demonstrate that tailoring the spatiotemporal structure of ultrashort light pulses can overcome the physical limitations imposed by both chromatic and modal dispersion in multimode optical fibers. We synthesize these light states with predefined spatial and chromatic dynamics through applying a sequence of transformations to shape the optical field in all its dimensions. Similar methods can also be used to overcome dispersion processes in other physical settings like acoustics and electron optics. Our results will enable advancements in laser-based technologies, including multimode optical communications, imaging, ultrafast light-matter interactions, and high brightness fiber sources.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces are endowed with unparallel flexibility to manipulate the light field with a subwavelength spatial resolution. Coupling metasurfaces to materials with strong optical nonlinearity may allow ultrafast spatiotemporal light field modulation. However, most metasurfaces demonstrated thus far are linear devices. Here, we experimentally demonstrate simultaneous spatiotemporal laser mode control using a single-layer plasmonic metasurface strongly coupled to an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material within a fiber laser cavity. While the geometric phase of the metasurface is utilized to convert the laser's transverse mode from a Gaussian beam to a vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum, the giant nonlinear saturable absorption of the ENZ material enables pulsed laser generation via the Q-switching process. The direct integration of a spatiotemporal metasurface in a laser cavity may pave the way for the development of miniaturized laser sources with tailored spatial and temporal profiles, which can be useful for numerous applications, such as superresolution imaging, high-density optical storage, and three-dimensional laser lithography.

Abstract:Optical communication can be revolutionized by encoding data into the orbital angular momentum of light beams. However, state-of-the-art approaches for dynamic control of complex optical wavefronts are mainly based on liquid crystal spatial light modulators or miniaturized mirrors, which suffer from intrinsically slow response times. Here, we experimentally realize a hybrid meta-optical system that enables complex control of the wavefront of light with pulse-duration limited dynamics. Specifically, by combining ultrafast polarization switching in a WSe2 monolayer with a dielectric metasurface, we demonstrate second harmonic beam deflection and structuring of orbital angular momentum on the femtosecond timescale. Our results pave the way to robust encoding of information for free space optical links, while reaching response times compatible with real-world telecom applications.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal sculpturing of light pulses with sophisticated structures on demand is one major goal of the everlasting pursuit of ultrafast information transmission and processing as well as ultraintense energy concentration and extraction using light. It may hold the key to unlocking new extraordinary fundamental physical effects. Traditionally, spatiotemporal light pulses are treated as spatiotemporally separable wave packets as a solution to Maxwell’s equations. In the past decade, more generalized forms of spatiotemporally nonseparable solution started to emerge with growing importance for their striking physical effects. This tutorial intends to provide the necessary basics on how to sculpture light in the spatiotemporal domain to realize spatiotemporal structures on demand and highlight some of the recent advances in the creation and characterization of increasingly complex spatiotemporal wave packets. These spatiotemporally separable to complex nonseparable states with diverse geometric and topological structures exhibit unique physical properties during propagation, focusing, and interaction with matter. The broad potential applications as well as outlook and future trends and open challenges in this field are presented.

Abstract:Advances in tunable metamaterials/metasurfaces facilitates their utilization in novel optical components, and lead to many breakthroughs in light tailoring by giving birth to diverse spatiotemporal dynamics. In the ascendant field of terahertz (THz) photonics, the ultrafast modulation is the fundamental process of technological advancements in high-speed wireless communications, sensing, and imaging. However, the current research efforts have been mainly devoted to studies of single functionality under the control of one stimulus, which has plateaued in terms of innovative new features. Here, building on the incident angle-induced C2 symmetry breaking of split ring pairs, we experimentally demonstrate extremely versatile, ultrafast THz switching behaviors at continuously alterable resonant states. The direction-controlled resonance hybridization provides another excellent degree of routing freedom, owing to its robustness, simplicity, and wide tunability. By leveraging such virtues, single LC mode and EIT-like resonance under normal and oblique incidence conditions are both effectively switched-off by means of photon injection. Considering the ultrashort lifetime of free carriers in MoSe2 crystal, the corresponding transient dynamics show an ultrafast recovery time within 700 ps. The strategy proposed here is a viable pathway for multidimensional THz wave manipulation, which gears up a crucial step for diversified functionalities in deployable metaphotonic devices.

Abstract:Emerging photonic functionalities are mostly governed by the fundamental principle of Lorentz reciprocity. Lifting the constraints imposed by this principle could circumvent deleterious effects that limit the performance of photonic systems. A variety of approaches have recently been explored to break reciprocity, yet most efforts have been limited to confined photonic systems. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a spatio-temporally modulated metasurface capable of extreme breakdown of Lorentz reciprocity. Through tailoring the momentum and frequency harmonic contents of the scattered waves, we achieve dynamical beam steering, reconfigurable focusing, and giant free-space optical isolation exemplifying the flexibility of our platform. We develop a generalized Bloch-Floquet theory which offers physical insights into the demonstrated extreme nonreciprocity, and its predictions are in excellent agreement with experiments. Our work opens exciting opportunities in applications where free-space nonreciprocal wave propagation is desired, including wireless communications and radiative energy transfer.
Ultrafast bursts of tailored spatiotemporal vortex pulses

Abstract:Orbital angular momentums (OAMs) of light can be categorized into longitudinal OAM (L-OAM) and transverse OAM (T-OAM). Light carrying time-varying L-OAM, known as self-torqued light, was recently discovered during harmonic generation and has been extensively developed within the context of optical frequency combs (OFCs). Meanwhile, ultrafast bursts of optical pulses, analogous to OFCs, are sought for various light-matter interaction, spectroscopic and nonlinear applications. However, achieving transiently switchable T-OAM of light on request, namely spatiotemporal vortex pulse bursts, with independently controlled spatiotemporal profile of each comb tooth, remain unrealized thus far. In this work, the experimental generation of spatiotemporal vortex bursts featured with controllable time-dependent characteristics is reported. The resultant bursts comprised of spatiotemporal optical vortex comb teeth have picosecond timescale switchable T-OAMs with defined arrangement, manifesting as spatiotemporal torquing of light. We also show ultrafast control of T-OAM chirality, yielding pulse bursts with staggered azimuthal local momentum density, resembling Kármán vortex streets. This approach enables the tailoring of more intricate spatiotemporal wavepacket bursts, such as high-purity modes variation in both radial and azimuthal quantum numbers of spatiotemporal Laguerre-Gaussian wavepackets over time, which may facilitate a host of novel applications in ultrafast light-mater interactions, high-dimensional quantum entanglements, space-time photonic topologies as well as spatiotemporal metrology and photography.
