Abstract:Single particle analysis is essential for a better understanding of the particle transformation process and to predict its environmental impact. In this study, we developed an aerosol optical tweezer (AOT) Raman spectroscopy system to investigate the phase state and morphology of suspended aerosol droplets in real time. The system comprises four modules: optical trapping, reaction, illumination and imaging, and detection. The optical trapping module utilizes a 532 nm laser and a 100 × oil immersion objective to stably trap aerosol droplets within 30 s. The reaction module allows us to adjust relative humidity (RH) and introduce reaction gases into the droplet levitation chamber, facilitating experiments to study liquid–liquid phase transitions. The illumination and imaging module employs a high-speed camera to monitor the trapped droplets, while the detector module records Raman scattering light. We trapped sodium chloride (NaCl) and 3-methyl glutaric acid (3-MGA) mixed droplets to examine RH-dependent morphology changes. Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) occurred when RH was decreased. Additionally, we introduced ozone and limonene/pinene to generate secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles in situ, which collided with the trapped droplet and dissolved in it. To determine the trapped droplet's characteristics, we utilized an open-source program based on Mie theory to retrieve diameter and refractive index from the observed whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in Raman spectra. It is found that mixed droplets formed core–shell morphology when RH was decreased, and the RH dependence of the droplets' phase transitions generated by different SOA precursors varied. Our AOT system serves as an essential experimental platform for in situ assessment of morphology and phase state during dynamic atmospheric processes.

Abstract:Quantifying the gas/particle partitioning of organic compounds is of great significance to the understanding of atmospheric aerosol indirect effect. Accurate determination of the hygroscopicities and vapour pressures of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC) is of crucial importance in studying their partitioning behaviour into atmospheric aerosol, as the influences on SVOCs evaporation from participation of inorganic species remains unclear. In this study we first present thermodynamic quantitative simulation and tweezed single particle measurement of hygroscopicity and volatility of single aerosol droplets. With thermodynamics simulation of the hygroscopicity, SVOC time dependent evaporation and potential chloride depletion reaction in a single trapped droplet, we illustrate influences from different process towards the trapped droplet. In optical tweezers measurement, the trapped droplet in the aerosol optical tweezers acts as a microcavity, which stimulates the cavity enhanced Raman spectroscopy (CERS) signal. Size and composition of the particle are calculated from Mie fit to the positions of the "whispering gallery modes" in the CERS fingerprint. Hygroscopic behaviours and SVOC saturated vapour pressure can then be extracted from the correlation between the changing droplet radius and solute concentration (derived from experimentally determined real part of refractive index (RI)) with good accuracy and reliability.

Abstract:The surface tension of troposphere aerosols can significantly influence their atmospheric processes and key properties, particularly on the morphology, the phase transition, the activation as cloud condensation nuclei, and the gas-particle partitioning. However, directly measuring the surface tension of single ambient aerosol is quite challenging, due to the limitations of their picolitre volumes and thermal motion. Here, we developed a dual laser tweezers Raman spectroscopy (DLT-RS) system to directly sense the surface tension of single airborne microdroplets (PM10 particles). A pair of aerosol droplets were trapped and driven to coalesce by the laser tweezers. Meanwhile, the backscattering light intensity and bright-field images during the coalescence process were recorded to characterize the aerosol surface tension. A remarkable advantage of directly sensing aerosol surface tension is that the solutes in aerosols are often supersaturated, which is common in atmospheric aerosols but almost unavailable in bulk solutions. We experimentally measured the surface tension of aerosols composed of nitrates or oxalic acid/nitrate mixture. Besides, the variation of surface tension during aerosol aging process was also explored, which brings possible implications on the surface evolution of actual ambient aerosol during their atmospheric lifetime.

Abstract:Viscosity is a fundamental physicochemical property of aerosol particles that influences chemical evolution, mass transfer rates, particle formation, etc. and also changes with ambient relative humidity (RH). However, the viscosity of real individual aerosol particles still remains less understood. Here, we developed a novel optical system based on dual optical tweezers to measure the viscosity of single suspending aerosol droplets under different RH conditions. In our experiment, a pair of quasi atmospheric aerosol droplets composed of organic and inorganic chemical substances were trapped and levitated by dual laser beams, respectively, and then collided and coalesced. The backscattering light signals and bright-field images of the dynamic coalescence process were recorded to infer the morphological relaxation time and the diameter of the composited droplet. Then, the viscosity of the droplet was calculated based on these measured values. The ambient RH of the aerosol droplets was controlled by varying the relative flow rates of dry and humidified nitrogen gas in a self-developed aerosol chamber. The viscosities of single aqueous droplets nebulized with solutes of sucrose, various sulfates and nitrates, and organic/inorganic mixtures were measured over the atmospheric RH range. Besides, the viscosities of the proxies of actual ambient aerosols in Beijing were investigated, which reasonably interpreted the aerosol chemistry transforming from sulfate dominating to nitrate dominating at the PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 μm) level in the last decade in Beijing. Furthermore, the hygroscopicity of droplets with a solute of organic/inorganic mixtures was researched to obtain a deep insight into the relationship between the viscosity and mass transfer process. Hence, we provide a robust approach for investigating the viscosity and hygroscopicity of the actual individual liquid PM10 aerosols.

Abstract:Ambient atmospheric aerosol particles comprised of various inorganic and organic substances ubiquitously undergo phase transition, such as efflorescence, amorphization, and especially liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). Resultant changes of physicochemical properties in aerosols then deeply affect the climate system. However, finely detecting these processes occurring in single aerosol particles, especially under the acidic condition of real atmospheric environment, remains a challenge. In this work, we investigated the pH-dependent phase separation in single levitated microdroplets using a self-developed laser tweezers Raman spectroscopy (LTRS) system. The dynamic process of LLPS in laser-trapped droplets over the course of humidity cycles was detected with the time-resolved cavity-enhanced Raman spectra. These measurements provide the first comprehensive account of the pH-dependent LLPS in single levitated aerosol microdroplets and bring possible implications on phase separation in actual atmospheric particles.
Advancing Cloud Science: Exploring the Lifetime of Indiviual Cloud Droplets through Aerosol Optical Tweezers and Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract:The lifetime of clouds has an important influence on radiation balance, atmospheric matter cycling, and global precipitation patterns. However, current assessments of cloud lifetime rely on statistical methods, underscoring the need for effective observational techniques. Moreover, existing research predominantly centers on precipitation removal, neglecting the process of cloud dissipation.Utilizing optical tweezers-Raman spectroscopy technology and CCD real-time imaging, this study conducts experiments on the evaporation of individual suspended droplets with a series of concentration gradients. We establish a method for quantifying the evaporation time of microdroplets, and characterize their evaporation dynamics through the temporal variation of OH-stretching Raman peak. Our research reveals the substantial influence of droplet solute concentration on evaporation time, indicating that even minute variations in solute concentration within cloud droplets can induce profound disparities in their lifetime.Furthermore, alterations in environmental relative humidity also have an impact on the dissipation of cloud droplets. These findings hold critical scientific significance, enhancing our understanding of cloud lifetime and providing a scientific foundation for accurately simulating cloud generation and dissipation processes in numerical models.

Abstract:Existing preparation methods for microdroplets usually require offline measurements to characterize single microdroplets. Here, we report an optical method used to facilitate the controllable formation and real-time characterization of single microdroplets. The optical tweezer technique was used to capture and form a microdroplet at the center of the trap. The controllable growth and real-time characterization of the microdroplet was realized, respectively, by adjusting experimental parameters and by resolving the Raman spectra by fitting Mie scattering to the spike positions of the spectra during the controllable growth of microdroplets. The proposed method can be potentially applied in optical microlenses and virus detection.

Abstract:Levitation by optical tweezers provides a unique non-invasive tool for investigating a microscale object without external perturbations. Here we experimentally levitate a micrometer-sized water droplet in the air using an optical tweezer. Meanwhile, vibrational modes of a levitated water droplet are excited by modulating the trapping laser. From their backscattered light, vibrational modes with mode numbers are observed in the spectra. Additionally, their corresponding free spectral ranges are analyzed and compared with theory and numerical simulations. This Letter, establishing a non-invasive and all-optical detection technique of optomechanical properties of levitated droplets, paves the way for their practical applications in aerosol and biomedical science. Abstract:Accurate surface tension measurements are key to understanding and predicting the behavior of atmospheric aerosols, particularly their formation, growth, and phase transitions. In Earth's atmosphere, aerosols often exist in metastable states, such as being supercooled or supersaturated. Standard tensiometry instruments face challenges in accessing these states due to the large sample volumes they require and rapid phase changes near surfaces. We present an instrument that uses a strong electric field, nearing the dielectric strength of air, to deform aerosol microdroplets and measure surface tension in a contact-free, humidity-controlled environment. A dual-beam optical trap holds single microdroplets between two electrodes and excites Raman scattering. When a high voltage is applied, droplet deformations reach tens of nanometers. These small shape changes are precisely measured through the splitting of morphology-dependent resonances, seen as sharp peaks in Raman spectra. Our measurements cover water activities where droplets are supersaturated, a region with limited previous data, and show good agreement with existing data where comparisons are possible. Unlike prior levitation-based methods, this approach measures surface tension in systems with viscosities over 10 2 Pa s without relying on dynamic processes.

Abstract:Interactions between water and nanoparticles are of great significance for atmospheric multiphase processes, physical chemistry, and materials science. Current knowledge of the hygroscopic and related physicochemical properties of nanoparticles, however, is insufficient due to limitations of the available measurement techniques. Here, we present the design and performance of a nano-hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer (nano-HTDMA) apparatus. To enable high accuracy and precision in hygroscopicity measurements of sub-10 nm aerosol nanoparticles, systematic and comprehensive calibration criteria of nano-HTDMA have been developed and applied, including sheath/aerosol flow rates, DMA voltage, relative humidity (RH) sensor, temperature sensor, and particle sizing. After calibration, the nano-HTDMA system has been shown to have an accurate sizing and a small sizing offsets between the two DMAs (<1.4%) for aerosol nanoparticles with diameters down to 6 nm. Moreover, to maintain the RH-uniformities that prevent the pre-deliquescence and non-prompt phase transition of nanoparticles within DMA2, the RH of sheath flow is kept as same as that of aerosol flow at inlet of DMA2, and the humidification system and the DMA2 system are placed in a well-insulated and air conditioner housing (±0.1K). Using nano-HTDMA system. We investigate the hygroscopic behavior of aerosol nanoparticles of two inorganic substances (e.g., ammonium sulfate and sodium sulfate). A strong size dependence of the hygroscopic growth factor is observed for ammonium sulfate and sodium sulfate nanoparticles with diameters down to 6 nm, respectively. For size dependence of phase transition, we find a weak size dependence of DRH and ERH of ammonium sulfate nanoparticles with diameters from 6 to 100 nm but a pronounced size dependence of DRH and ERH between 20 and 6 nm for sodium sulfate nanoparticles.

Abstract:A volatility hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer (VH-TDMA) was developed and used to measure and research the actual aerosol hygroscopic and thermal properties.The heating unit equipped with four symmetric heating tubes worked at 25℃C,150℃C,250℃C and 350℃C,respectively.With rapid switching of the samples between different heating tubes,a higher temporal resolution could be achieved compared to regular V-TDMA.The humidification unit humidified the aerosol sample by using Nation tubes.The relative humidity (RH) of the sample was controlled within the range of 10％ to 90％ with an accuracy of l％.The particle loss and the accuracy of the developed system were evaluated with laboratory generated sodium chloride and ammonium sulfate samples.The measured results were in good agreement with those literature reported values,which confirmed that the developed VH-TDMA system was suitable for accuracy measurement of the hygroscopic and thermal properties of atmospheric aerosols.Field application of the system was carried out at the Shouxian National Climate Observatory in Anhui Province.The hygroscopic properties and volatilization characteristics of summer aerosol were studied.The results showed a positive correlation between the aerosol hygroscopic growth factor and particle size,and a pronounced diurnal cycle of the mixing state of the carbonaceous aerosol was observed.

Abstract:Droplet manipulation on superhydrophobic surfaces (DMSS) without conventional pipetting is an emerging liquid handling technology, which can be potentially used for diagnostic, analysis, and synthetic processes. Despite notable progress, controlling droplet motion on superhydrophobic surfaces by contactless acoustic waves is rarely reported. Herein, we report a contactless acoustic tweezer (CAT) for DMSS based on establishing ultrasonic standing wave between an ultrasound transducer (UST) and a superhydrophobic substrate to manipulate droplets without physical contact. The CAT utilizes acoustic radiation forces to trap and move droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces, which allows for precise and controllable movement of droplets by controlling the movement of the UST. Small droplets with volume less than 20 & mu;L can be levitated in mid-air for out-plane manipulation, and large droplets with volume up to 500 & mu;L can be trapped for in-plane manipulation. Experimental results demonstrate the versatility of the CAT for manipulating droplets with various compositions and volumes on various superhydrophobic substrates, offering a versatile and cross-contamination-free liquid handling approach for applications, including but not limited to high-throughput surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Abstract:Atmospheric aerosols have profound impacts on the environment and human health. Aerosols can absorb or scatter the solar radiation and alter the energy distribution of the global atmosphere. The aerosol particles bearing hazardous pollutants can get into the human body through the respiratory system and lead to various diseases. The key physicochemical properties of aerosol particles such as viscosity, phase state, pH, diffusivity, etc. are crucial for estimating their environmental and health impacts. Most of present techniques take an ensemble of particles as the researching target, hence only average properties can be obtained using these techniques. However, every aerosol particle is a unique micro reactor, the ambiguous treatment of which is considerably problematic. The laser trapping-Raman spectroscopy (LT-RS) can characterize the physicochemical properties and processes of single atmospheric aerosol particle at a natural suspended state. This paper presents an up-to-date review on applying LS-RS technique in the characterization of aerosol particles, including physical properties, chemical compositions, multiphase reactions, etc. Besides, recent technological advances of LT-RS are also reviewed. For each application, we describe the principle and representative examples of studies. The analytical capabilities of the LT-RS technique presented here demonstrate great promise in investigating the chemistry and multidimensional properties of individual atmospheric aerosol particles.
A novel lidar system for profiling the aerosol hygroscopic growth factor

Abstract:The scattering growth factor is an important parameter for description of aerosol hygroscopic growth properties. In this work, a multi-wavelength polarized Raman lidar system is designed that detects the hygroscopic characteristics of aerosol particles. The principle of the aerosol hygroscopic growth factor retrieval method is described in detail. To verify the feasibility of this lidar system, numerical simulations are performed. In the simulations, a 532 nm laser with energy of 440 mJ and a 10 Hz pulse repetition rate is used as the source, a 400-mm-diameter Cassegrain reflecting telescope collects the backscattered return signals, and the 1976 US standard model with a Mie scattering profile from practical observations is used to simulate the atmospheric environment. The results show that the lidar system is able to detect the aerosol hygroscopic growth factor profiles.

Abstract:We create and qualify a Volatility and Hygroscopicity Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer (VH-TDMA) for the study of aerosols. This VH-TDMA measures size distributions, volatility, and hygroscopicity and includes an auxiliary conditioner that allows quick connection to other external aerosol conditioners. The differential mobility analyzers are not temperature controlled, allowing the surrounding environment to influence the measurement conditions, and this is fully accounted for when measuring aerosol volatility and hygroscopicity. For the volatility conditioner, the VH-TDMA uses a 15 m coil of tubing in an oven to evaporate aerosol samples at elevated temperatures. We measured several single component model aerosols to qualify the differential mobility particle sizer (DMPS) channel and each of the conditioners: hygroscopicity and volatility. Due to insufficient power supply calibration in this study, the TDMA channel is limited to particle sizes greater than 70 nm. The DMPS channel was able to reproduce ammonium sulfate size distributions when compared to common scanning mobility particle sizers. For hygroscopicity, the standard deviation in the measured ammonium sulfate growth factors was 0.03 over a 4-h experiment. From this data, the TDMA has an observed relative humidity error of +/- 0.6% with manufacturer reported error of +/- 1.2% relative humidity. The volatility channel reproduced the previously published saw tooth pattern of room temperature saturation vapor pressures from atomized C3-C9 diacids. The maximum percent difference in room temperature saturation vapor pressure was approximately 80%. The enthalpy of sublimation derived from the diacids increased monotonically (except for suberic acid) and resembled measurements from mass effusion techniques.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) is ubiquitous in ambient aerosols. This specific morphology exerts substantial impacts on the physicochemical properties and atmospheric processes of aerosols, particularly on the gas-particle mass transfer, the interfacial heterogeneous reaction, and the surface albedo. Although there are many studies on the LLPS of aerosols, a clear picture of LLPS in individual aerosols is scarce due to the experimental difficulties of trapping a single particle and mimicking the suspended state of real aerosols. Here, we investigate the phase separation in individual contactless microdroplets by a self-constructed laser tweezer/Raman spectroscopy system. The dynamic transformation of the morphology of optically trapped droplets over the course of humidity cycles is detected by the time-resolved cavity-enhanced Raman spectra. The impacts of pH and inorganic components on LLPS in aerosols are discussed. The results show that the increasing acidity can enhance the miscibility between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic phases and decrease the separation relative humidity of aerosols. Moreover, the inorganic components also have various impacts on the aerosol phase state, whose influence depends on their different salting-out capabilities. It brings possible implications on the morphology of actual atmospheric particles, particularly for those dominated by internal mixtures of inorganic and organic components.

Abstract:Here we present and demonstrate a non-contact optical measuring method for the characterization of both the shape and size parameters of nanoparticles using optical tweezers. The measurement relies on the optical polarization and scattering of nanoparticles. For nanoparticles levitated within optical tweezers, the absolute scattering light power in a fixed detection region gives the nanoparticle size, while the scattering light pattern provides insight into the shape of nanoparticles. With prior information on the nanoparticles, particle structures can be derived only through its scattering light. The method is experimentally demonstrated using silica and polystyrene nanoparticles obtaining shape measuring results in consist with the traditional detecting method conducted in a vacuum. Moreover, the radii of the componential nanospheres derived from the method lie within the radii range obtained from electron microscopy imaging results, where the uncertainty is about ±3.5%. This work provides an effective method for the identification and studying of individual nanoparticles, which is attracting growing concerns in areas, such as precise sensing, environment, and health.

Abstract:The growth in aerosol particles caused by water uptake during increasing ambient relative humidity alters the physical and chemical properties of aerosols, which then affects public health, atmospheric chemistry, and the Earth's climate. The temporal resolution and sensitivity of current techniques are not sufficient to measure the growth dynamics of single aerosol nanoparticles. Additionally, the specific time required for phase transition from solid to aqueous has not been measured. Here, we describe a label-free photonic microscope that uses the Bloch surface waves as the illumination source for imaging and sensing to provide real-time measurements of the hygroscopic growth dynamics of a single aerosol (diameter <100 nm) containing the main components of air pollution. This specific time can be measured for both pure and mixed aerosols, showing that organics will delay the phase transition.
