Abstract:Vehicular communications essentially support automotive applications for safety and infotainment. For this reason, industry leaders envision an enhanced role of vehicular communications in the fifth generation of mobile communications technology. Over the years, the number of vehicle-mounted sensors has increased steadily, which potentially leads to more volume of critical data communications in a short time. Also, emerging applications such as remote/autonomous driving and infotainment such as high-definition movie streaming require data-rates on the order of multiple Gbit/s. Such high data-rates require a large system bandwidth, but very limited bandwidth is available in the sub-6 GHz cellular bands. This has sparked research interest in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band (10 GHz-300 GHz), where a large bandwidth is available to support the high data-rate and low-latency communications envisioned for emerging vehicular applications. However, leveraging mmWave communications requires a thorough understanding of the relevant vehicular propagation channels, which are significantly different from those investigated below 6 GHz. Despite their significance, very few investigations of mmWave vehicular channels are reported in the literature. This work highlights the key attributes of mmWave vehicular communication channels and surveys the recent literature on channel characterization efforts in order to provide a gap analysis and propose possible directions for future research.

Abstract:Vehicular communications have attracted more and more attention recently from both industry and academia due to its strong potential to enhance road safety, improve traffic efficiency, and provide rich on-board information and entertainment services. In this paper, we discuss fundamental physical layer issues that enable efficient vehicular communications and present a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art research. We first introduce vehicular channel characteristics and modeling, which are the key underlying features differentiating vehicular communications from other types of wireless systems. We then present schemes to estimate the time-varying vehicular channels and various modulation techniques to deal with high-mobility channels. After reviewing resource allocation for vehicular communications, we discuss the potential to enable vehicular communications over the millimeter wave bands. Finally, we identify the challenges and opportunities associated with vehicular communications.

Abstract:Along with the fast development of both the automobile industry and mobile communication systems, the combination of vehicles and wireless communications has been a burgeoning trend and is of essential significance in safety and mobility applications in vehicular networks. However, as described in Chap. 2, compared with traditional (quasi-)static communications, wireless channels in vehicular communications are more complex with large Doppler and evident non-stationarity, which makes 5G-enabled vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications face rigorous challenges. Hence, in this chapter, in order to combat the severe channel conditions and achieve high data rate, we first explore some advanced PHY techniques for VCN system design, which can effectively exploit the benefits of OFDM and MIMO in high mobility vehicular networks. Then, shifting from combating channel to exploiting channel, we also discuss the potential PHY directions for the next leap.

Abstract:Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication technology offers a potential and promising solution to support 5G and B5G wireless networks in dynamic scenarios and applications. However, mobility introduces many challenges as well as opportunities to mmWave applications. To address these problems, we conduct a survey of the opportunities and technologies to support mmWave communications in mobile scenarios. Firstly, we summarize the mobile scenarios where mmWave communications are exploited, including indoor wireless local area network (WLAN) or wireless personal area network (WPAN), cellular access, vehicle-to-everything (V2X), high speed train (HST), unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and the new space-air-ground-sea communication scenarios. Then, to address users' mobility impact on the system performance in different application scenarios, we introduce several representative mobility models in mmWave systems, including human mobility, vehicular mobility, high speed train mobility and ship mobility. Next we survey the key challenges and existing solutions to mmWave applications, such as channel modeling, channel estimation, anti-blockage, and capacity improvement. Lastly, we discuss the open issues concerning mobility-aware mmWave communications that deserve further investigation. In particular, we highlight future heterogeneous mobile networks, dynamic resource management, artificial intelligence (AI) for mobility and integration of geographical information, deployment of large intelligent surface and reconfigurable antenna technology, and finally, the evolution to Terahertz (THz) communications.

Distributed and Scalable Radio Resource Management for mmWave V2V Relays towards Safe Automated Driving

Abstract:The millimeter-wave (mmWave) Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication system has drawn attention as a critical technology to extend the restricted perception of onboard sensors and upgrade the level of vehicular safety that requires a high data rate. However, co-channel inter-link interference presents significant challenges for scalable V2V communications. To overcome such limitations, this paper firstly analyzes the required data rate ensuring maneuver safety via mmWave V2V relays in an overtaking traffic scenario. Based on these preparations, we propose a distributed radio resource management scheme that integrates spatial, frequency, and power domains for two transmission ranges (short/long). In the spatial domain, ZigZag antenna configuration is utilized to mitigate the interference, which plays a decisive role in the short inter-vehicle distance. In frequency and power domains, two resource blocks are allocated alternately, and transmit power is controlled to suppress the interference, which has a decisive impact on interference mitigation in the long inter-vehicle distance. Simulation results reveal that the achievable End-to-End (E2E) throughput maintains consistently higher than the required data rate for all vehicles. Most importantly, it works effectively in scalable mmWave V2V topology.

Abstract:Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have recently attracted large research interest, since the huge available bandwidth can potentially lead to rates of multiple Gbps (gigabit per second) per user. Though mmWave can be readily used in stationary scenarios such as indoor hotspots or backhaul, it is challenging to use mmWave in mobile networks, where the transmitting/receiving nodes may be moving, channels may have a complicated structure, and the coordination among multiple nodes is difficult. To fully exploit the high potential rates of mmWave in mobile networks, lots of technical problems must be addressed. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of mmWave communications for future mobile networks (5G and beyond). We first summarize the recent channel measurement campaigns and modeling results. Then, we discuss in detail recent progresses in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) transceiver design for mmWave communications. After that, we provide an overview of the solution for multiple access and backhauling, followed by analysis of coverage and connectivity. Finally, the progresses in the standardization and deployment of mmWave for mobile networks are discussed.

Abstract:Thanks to the availability of large bandwidth and high-gain directional antennas at the millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands, mmWave communications have been considered as one of the primary solutions to meet the high data rates needs in vehicular networks. Unicast in mmWave vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications has been well-studied, but much less attention has been paid to V2V broadcast which is required by many V2V applications such as active safety. To fill the gap, this paper systematically investigates mmWave V2V broadcast by considering the unique properties of mmWave signal propagation in V2V environments as well as the impacts of directional antennas and interference. Based on widely-accepted, high-fidelity system models, we mathematically analyze the receiver-side signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) and broadcast coverage, and we study the impacts of blockage, inter-vehicle distance, vehicle density and beam pattern. Through comprehensive numerical analysis, we find out that, instead of a single unique optimal beamwidth, there exists an optimal range of beamwidth, in which the beamwidths have similar performance and can maximize the coverage. We also find out that the selection of carrier sensing range plays an important role as it highly influences the performance of the whole vehicular networks. Our analysis provides unique insight into mmWave V2V broadcast, and it sheds light on designing effective V2V broadcast protocols.

Abstract:There are lots of advancements going on in the vehicular community in terms of technological improvements. Vehicular communication is one of the domains which is driving the expectations of the people from vehicular technology. These expectations include more safety services while driving a car on roads and highways like vehicle collision warning, intersection warning, emergency brake warning, etc. Vehicular communication not only supports safety services but also provides non-safety services like navigation support, toll collection, parking payment, etc. Consequently, people’s demands on vehicular technology are increasing even more. So, the vehicular community needs to adopt new technology and upgrade communication framework so that it can fulfill the desired expectations. Therefore, an increment in reliability and data rate is required. Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) is a next generation technology that can be helpful in this regard. Hence, we propose a modified PHY layer to accommodate two types of MIMO (Transmit Diversity and Spatial Multiplexing) and to use them in a selective way based on the service requirements. Our experimental results demonstrate that our proposed model can achieve up to 15 dB gain in terms of reliability and improve the throughput up to 2.3 times compared to the conventional DSRC model.

Abstract:Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) communication is conceived as a viable approach for 5G vehicular communication systems, where vehicles are equipped with more sensors that generate Gbps data for future autonomous driving. However, such directional mmWave communication relies on accurate beam alignment and is sensitive to blockage. Dense deployment of mmWave base stations (mmBSs) and high mobility of vehicles also lead to frequent handovers and complex beam alignment calculation. 5G mmWave vehicular communication calls for a smart and stable solution. To this end, we propose an online learning scheme to address the problem of beam selection with blockage-free guarantee in 5G mmWave vehicular networks. We first model this problem as a contextual combinatorial multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem with QoS constraints and delayed feedback. Next, we propose an online learning algorithm, BPG, to predict beam directions, with provable sub-linear regret and blockage-free bounds. BPG exploits the context space and learns the expected weight of each beam from arrived vehicles’ contexts and the delayed feedback. To validate the efficiency of BPG, we also conduct trace-driven simulations based on real-world traffic patterns. Simulation results show that BPG achieves close-to-optimal throughput with low violation and outperforms other benchmark algorithms.

Abstract:With the explosive growth of vehicle applications, vehicular networks based on millimeter wave (mmWave) bands have attracted interests from both academia and industry. mmWave communications are able to utilize the huge available bandwidth to provide multiple Gbps transmission rates among vehicles. In this paper, we address the content distribution scheduling problem in mmWave vehicular networks. It has been challenging for all vehicles in the same network to complete content downloading due to the limited communication resources of roadside units (RSUs) and the high mobility of vehicles. We propose a joint vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) scheduling scheme to minimize the total number of content distribution time slots from a global optimization perspective. In the V2I phase, the RSU serially transmits integrity content to vehicles, which are selected according to the vehicular network topology and transmission scheduling scheme. In the V2V phase, full-duplex communications and concurrent transmissions are exploited to achieve content sharing between vehicles and improve transmission efficiency. Performance evaluations demonstrate that our proposed scheme reduces the number of time slots and significantly improves system throughput when compared with other schemes, especially under large-size file transfers and a large number of vehicles.

Multi-Frequency Multi-Scenario Millimeter Wave MIMO Channel Measurements and Modeling for B5G Wireless Communication Systems

Abstract:Millimeter wave (mmWave) bands have been utilized for the fifth generation (5G) communication systems and will no doubt continue to be deployed for beyond 5G (B5G). However, the underlying channels are not fully investigated at multifrequency bands and in multi-scenarios by using the same channel sounder, especially for the outdoor, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) conditions. In this paper, we conduct multi-frequency multi-scenario mmWave MIMO channel measurements with 4*4 antennas at 28, 32, and 39 GHz bands for three cases, i.e., the human body and vehicle blockage measurements, outdoor path loss measurements, and V2V measurements. The channel characteristics, including blockage effect, path loss and coverage range, and non-stationarity and spatial consistency, are thoroughly studied. The blockage model, path loss model, and time-varying channel model are proposed for mmWave MIMO channels. The channel measurement and modeling results will be of great importance for further mmWave communication system deployments in indoor hotspot, outdoor, and vehicular network scenarios for B5G.

Abstract:Since the evolving standardization of cellular V2X (C-V2X) technologies is continuously developed by 3GPP, research on new radio (NR-V2X) has been on schedule by academic and industries. Though millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band is supposed to provide large transmission bandwidth, yet the development of mmWave band in NR-V2X is still in preliminary stage. In this article, a comprehensive discussion of mmWave NR-V2X is given covering trends, standardization landscape, and enabling technologies, aiming at tackling the challenge of channel modeling, directional channel access, beamforming and blockage management. The vision of mmWave NR-V2X is to fully support the development of automated driving, holographic control display and improved in-car infotainment for the future.

Millimeter Wave V2V Communications: Distributed Association and Beam Alignment

Abstract:Recently millimeter-wave bands have been postulated as a means to accommodate the foreseen extreme bandwidth demands in vehicular communications, which result from the dissemination of sensory data to nearby vehicles for enhanced environmental awareness and improved safety level. However, the literature is particularly scarce in regards to principled resource allocation schemes that deal with the challenging radio conditions posed by the high mobility of vehicular scenarios. In this work we propose a novel framework that blends together Matching Theory and Swarm Intelligence to dynamically and efficiently pair vehicles and optimize both transmission and reception beamwidths. This is done by jointly considering Channel State Information (CSI) and Queue State Information (QSI) when establishing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links. To validate the proposed framework, simulation results are presented and discussed where the throughput performance as well as the latency/reliability trade-offs of the proposed approach are assessed and compared to several baseline approaches recently proposed in the literature. The results obtained in our study show performance gains in terms of reliability and delay up to 25% for ultra-dense vehicular scenarios and on average 50% more paired vehicles that some of the baselines. These results shed light on the operational limits and practical feasibility of mmWave bands, as a viable radio access solution for future high-rate V2V communications.

Abstract:5G-based millimeter Waves (mmWave) systems have the prospective of enabling $>1Gbps$ communications in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). ITS relies on vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications to share information among vehicles. However, the V2X Communications via existing technologies such as DSRC, 3G, 4G and LTE, are not able to achieve such a high data rate. Although 5G-based mmWave can support ultra-low-delay V2X transmissions, it comes with beam alignment difficulties as well as the routing stability issues due to rapid mobility of vehicles. The dynamic vehicle traffic causes frequent beam misalignment which tends to degrade the quality-of-service (QoS) performance. In this paper, we first propose a 3D-based position detection scheme for beam alignment/selection purpose. Then a group-based routing algorithm is performed to select a secure path for achieving trustworthy data transmissions. The road traffic is automatically segmented to divide the vehicles into different groups, and each group head is selected and members are added. Group members are authenticated by the group head via elliptic curve algorithms. Huffman coding is performed to compress the data and encrypt the binary files. This proposed novel intelligent beam control and secure stable routing scheme have been verified in simulations to demonstrate much better performance than existing schemes.

Abstract:Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) will revolutionize tomorrow's intelligent transportation systems, being considered promising to improve transportation safety, traffic efficiency, and mobility. In fact, envisioned use cases of CAVs demand very high throughput, lower latency, highly reliable communications, and precise positioning capabilities. The availability of a large spectrum at millimeter-wave (mmWave) band potentially promotes new specifications in spectrum technologies capable of supporting such service requirements. In this article, we specifically focus on how mmWave communications are being approached in vehicular standardization activities, CAVs use cases and deployment challenges in realizing the future fully connected settings. Finally, we also present a detailed performance assessment on mmWave-enabled vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) cooperative perception as an example case study to show the impact of different configurations.

Abstract:Efficient one-hop multicasting (OHM) of high-volume sensor data plays a pivotal role in the success of cooperative autonomous driving applications. Although millimeter-Wave (mmWave) bands demonstrate huge potential for high- bandwidth OHM data transmission, the challenge lies in enabling individual vehicles to locate and communicate with suitable neighbors in a fully distributed and highly dynamic scenario. This paper introduces mmV2V, a fully distributed OHM scheme designed for vehicular networks, comprising three tightly integrated protocols. Initially, synchronized vehicles perform a probabilistic neighbor discovery procedure, wherein randomly divided transmitters (or receivers) clockwise scan (or listen to) the surroundings in synchronization with heterogeneous Tx (or Rx) beams. This approach facilitates the identification of the vast majority of neighbors within a few repeated rounds. Subsequently, vehicles engage in negotiations with their neighbors to establish an optimal communication schedule in evenly distributed slots. Finally, matched pairs of neighboring vehicles commence high data rate transmissions using refined beams. We implement a prototype testbed to validate the feasibility of the main components of mmV2V. Extensive simulations based on generated and real-world traffic traces are conducted and the results demonstrate that mmV2V consistently achieves a high completion ratio in demanding OHM tasks across various traffic conditions.

Integrated Sensing and Communications Towards Proactive Beamforming in mmWave V2I via Multi-Modal Feature Fusion (MMFF)

Abstract:The future of vehicular communication networks relies on mmWave massive multi-input-multi-output antenna arrays for intensive data transfer and massive vehicle access. However, reliable vehicle-to-infrastructure links require exact alignment between the narrow beams, which traditionally involves excessive signaling overhead. To address this issue, we propose a novel proactive beamforming scheme that integrates multi-modal sensing and communications via Multi-Modal Feature Fusion Network (MMFF-Net), which is composed of multiple neural network components with distinct functions. Unlike existing methods that rely solely on communication processing, our approach obtains comprehensive environmental features to improve beam alignment accuracy. We verify our scheme on the Vision-Wireless (ViWi) dataset, which we enriched with realistic vehicle drifting behavior. Our proposed MMFF-Net achieves more accurate and stable angle prediction, which in turn increases the achievable rates and reduces the communication system outage probability. Even in complex dynamic scenarios with adverse environment conditions, robust prediction results can be guaranteed, demonstrating the feasibility and practicality of the proposed proactive beamforming approach.

Abstract:Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications are revolutionizing the connectivity of transportation systems supporting safe and efficient road mobility. To meet the growing bandwidth eagerness of V2X services, millimeter-wave (e.g., 5G new radio over spectrum 26.50 - 48.20 GHz) and sub-THz (e.g., 120 GHz) frequencies are being investigated for the large available spectrum. Communication at these frequencies requires beam-type connectivity as a solution for the severe path loss attenuation. However, beams can be blocked, with negative consequences for communication reliability. Blockage prediction is necessary and challenging when the blocker is dynamic in high mobility scenarios such as Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V). This paper presents an analytical model to derive the unconditional probability of blockage in a highway multi-lane scenario. The proposed model accounts for the traffic density, the 3D dimensions of the vehicles, and the position of the antennas. Moreover, by setting the communication parameters and a target quality of service, it is possible to predict the signal-to-noise ratio distribution and the service probability, which can be used for resource scheduling. Exhaustive numerical results confirm the validity of the proposed model.

Abstract:Vehicular communications, referring to information exchange among vehicles, pedestrians, and infrastructures, have become very popular and been widely studied recently due to its great potential to support intelligent transportation and various safety applications. Via vehicular communications, manually driving vehicles and autonomous vehicles can collect useful information to improve traffic safety and support infotainment services. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent research on enabling efficient vehicular communications from the network layer perspective. First, we introduce general applications and unique characteristics of vehicular networks and the corresponding classifications. Based on different driving patterns of vehicles, we divide vehicular networks into two categories, i.e., manually driving vehicular networks and automated driving vehicular networks, and then discuss the available communication techniques, network structures, routing protocols, and handoff strategies applied in these vehicular networks. Finally, we identify the challenges confronted by the current vehicular communications and present the corresponding research opportunities.
