Abstract:Tryptophan(Trp) is being explored as a potential biomarker for various diseases associated with decreased tryptophan levels; however, metabolomic methods are expensive and time-consuming and require extensive sample analysis, making them urgently needed for trace detection. To exploit the properties of Ti3C2 MXenes a rational porous methyl orange (MO)-delaminated Ti3C2 MXene was prepared via a facile mixing process for the electrocatalytic oxidation of Trp. The hollow-like 3D structure with a more open structure and the synergistic effect of MO and conductive Ti3C2 MXene enhanced its electrochemical catalytic capability toward Trp biosensing. More importantly, MO can stabilize Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets through noncovalent π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding. Compared with covalent attachment, these non-covalent interactions preserve the electronic conductivity of the Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets. Finally, the addition of MO-derived nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) atoms to Ti3C2 MXene enhanced the electronegativity and improved its affinity for specific molecules, resulting in high-performance electrocatalytic activity. The proposed biosensor exhibited a wide linear response in concentration ranges of 0.01-0.3 µM and 0.5-120 µM, with a low detection limit of 15 nM for tryptophan detection, and high anti-interference ability in complex media of human urine and egg white matrices. The exceptional abilities of the MO/Ti3C2 nanocatalyst make it a promising electrode material for the detection of important biomolecules.

Abstract:In the present study, the blue fluorescent L‐Cys@Ti3C2 MQDs are synthesized using hydrothermal methods, and the preparation process is simple, rapid, and mild. The fluorescence of L‐Cys@Ti3C2 MQDs can be effectively quenched by Ag+ through a static quenching mechanism, demonstrating high sensitivity and excellent selectivity for Ag+ detection. MXene quantum dots (MQDs), an emerging zero‐dimensional nanomaterial, have garnered significant attention from researchers due to their distinctive physical and chemical properties. In this study, cysteine‐functionalized Ti3C2 MQDs were synthesized using a facile hydrothermal methods, resulting in the functionalized Ti3C2 MQDs exhibiting intense blue fluorescence attributed to size‐dependent effects and surface defects. Furthermore, the cysteine‐functionalized Ti3C2 MQDs exhibit excitation wavelength‐dependent emission behavior and serve as a highly sensitive fluorescent probe for Ag+ detection with an impressive low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.015 μM. Moreover, they demonstrate exceptional sensitivity and selectivity in determining Ag+. This study presents a novel approach for the detection of Ag+ and highlights the immense potential of cysteine‐functionalized Ti3C2 MQDs in environmental applications.

Highly fluorescent Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots for macrophage labeling and Cu2+ ion sensing

Abstract:Quantum dots, derived from two-dimensional (2D) materials, have shown promise in bioimaging, sensing and photothermal applications, and in white light emitting devices (WLEDs). Herein, nitrogen and phosphorus functionalized Ti3C2 MXene based quantum dots (N,P-MQDs) were successfully prepared through a top-bottom hydrothermal method. This type of photoluminescent quantum dots has realized green fluorescence for the first time at around 560 nm with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 20.1%, the highest ever reported; meanwhile, it also exhibits excellent photostability and pH resistance capacities. Comprehensive characterization and well-resolved density functional theory (DFT) calculation were implemented to determine the mechanism of fluorescence shift and enhancement. Furthermore, the N,P-MQDs have been proved to efficiently act as fluorescent probes for macrophage labeling. In addition, the high sensitivity of the N,P-MQDs toward Cu2+ ions made them a low cost, sensitive, environment-friendly, and label-free fluorescence platform for Cu2+ detection. The outstanding performance of Ti3C2 MXene based quantum dots has demonstrated their great potential to be used as promising fluorescent probes in the fields of biological imaging, optical sensing, photoelectric conversion, etc.
A Luminescent Turn-Up Metal–organic Framework Sensor for Tryptophan Based on Singlet–singlet Förster Energy Transfer

Abstract:A water stable metal-organic framework, ZJU-108, was designed and successfully synthesized as a luminescent turn-up sensor, and it can discriminate tryptophan from other natural amino acids in aqueous solution. Because of the apparent lower singlet level of tryptophan compared with other amino acids, the singlet-singlet Förster energy transfer mechanism was applied to design a luminescent sensor. As a result, a selective MOF sensor for tryptophan was realized by choosing the ligand with the appropriate singlet energy level. As expected, ZJU-108 shows an excellent luminescence enhancement response to tryptophan over other natural amino acids with a detection limit of 42.9 nM. This work presents a new insight for designing turn-up MOF sensors and demonstrates the potential of ZJU-108 as a luminescent probe for the detection of tryptophan.

Abstract:MXenes quantum dots (QDs) are a newly emerging family of nano-size transition metal carbides or nitrides or carbonitrides. Rapid development of MXene till now inspires us to explore more interesting MXene QDs for wide chem-/bio-applications. However, it was greatly hindered by the utilization of high concentration HF and tediously long time to etch the MAX phases for the MXene nanosheets precursor production. Herein, MXene-like TiCN QDs was synthesized by a simple and environmental friendly hydrothermal method using TiCN powder as the precursor. The as-prepared TiCN QDs showed good aqueous dispersibility and excellent fluorescence properties. The average lateral and vertical sizes of TiCN QDs were 2.7 ± 0.2 nm and 3.2 ± 0.3 nm, respectively. In addition, the TiCN QDs were used in specific and sensitive detection of ferric ion (Fe3+) with broad linear ranges of 2–400 μM and 500–800 μM, respectively, as well as lowest limit of detection of 1.0 μΜ. The applicability of the as-obtained TiCN QDs was confirmed via their applications in highly specific Fe3+ detection.

Abstract:Fluorescence quantum dots (QDs) are promising functional nanomaterials in chemical biology and environmental applications, where an analyte-induced responsive system is beneficial for detecting numerous life-related molecules and pollutants. Here, fluorescent Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots (MQDs) with the size of 1.75 nm were synthesized by a simple method of hydrofluoric acid etching and dimethyl sulfoxide exfoliation to form nanosheets followed by a one-step ultrasound method. The as-synthesized MQDs showed excitation-dependent behaviour along with a fluorescence quantum yield value of 7.7%. In addition, the fluorescence of the MQDs can be significantly suppressed by Fe3+. The mechanism for the fluorescence quenching of the MQDs was systematically investigated, which was attributed to the oxidation-reduction reaction between the MQDs and Fe3+ and the inner filter effect (IFE), different from the reported Förster resonant energy transfer (FRET) mechanism for MXene nanosheets. Based on this trait, a fluorescence method for Fe3+ detection based on MQDs was demonstrated with high sensitivity and selectivity, and the limit of detection was 310 nM. The proposed method was successfully used for the sensitive detection of Fe3+ in serum and sea water. This work will not only help to understand the selectivity mechanisms of MQDs as fluorescent probes for metal ions, but also provide a smart sensing platform in biological and environmental detection.

Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots as an efficient fluorescent probe for bioflavonoid quercetin quantification in food samples

Abstract:Background: Quercetin (QC) is known as a typical antioxidant as a bioflavonoid, and its quick, sensitive, and specific detection is crucial for assessing food products. In this study, for the purpose of luminescence-based sensing of QC, bright bluish-green emissive quantum dots of N-doped MXene-based titanium carbide (Ti3C2) were fabricated. Recently, MXene quantum dots (MX-QDs), the rapidly emerging zero-dimensional nanomaterials made from two-dimensional transition metal carbides, have attracted much interest due to their unique physical and chemical features. These include the extremely large surface-to-volume ratio, biocompatibility, luminescence tunability, and hybridization capability while retaining properties of their two-dimensional counterpart including good conductivity and charge transferability. Results: The fabricated Ti3C2 MX-QDs had a quantum yield of 8.13 % at the emission wavelength of λem = 465 nm and displayed excellent photostability with great colloidal stability. It was found that introducing QC to near Ti3C2 MX-QDs reduced their fluorescence signals due to quenching effects. These quenching effects that occurred in a very broad linear range of QC (25-600 nM) enabled QC to be sensed quantitatively with the limit of detection of QC (1.35 nM), being the lowest ever reported to date. The quenching phenomena that caused such excellent sensitivity could be accounted for by combined effects of static quenching/radiation-free complex formation and inner filter effects (IFE) of Ti3C2 MX-QDs with QC. Significance: In addition, the quenching-based detection demonstrated excellent specificity against structurally relevant interferants. Therefore, the presented sensing strategies with Ti3C2 MX-QDs-based fluorescence quenching can be one of the strongest candidates as a reliable and cost-effective solution to highly sensitive quantification of QC in food samples.
Ultrafast Transient Spectra and Dynamics of MXene (ti3c2tx) in Response to Light Excitations of Various Wavelengths

Abstract:The novel optical response properties of MXene (Ti3C2Tx) have been applied in many cutting-edge areas, such as solar utilization, laser therapy, and sensing. Understanding the interaction between photons and MXene is critical to all these applications. However, the ultrafast carrier pathway of this material under broad-wavelength-range light excitation remains unknown. In this work, we conducted a comprehensive ultrafast spectroscopy study of MXene under light excitation at various wavelengths. With the combination of ultrabroadband transient spectra (450-1100 nm) and dynamics, we provided schemes for the MXene-light interaction. The transient spectra showed that light excitation in the ultraviolet to near-infrared ranges could induce two transient absorption regions in the visible and near-infrared ranges. An early stage fast relaxation transient spectrum at 100-400 fs is attributed to an electron-electron interaction process. The dynamics in the early stage could be affected by the modulation of the excitation wavelength, the fluence, and the probe wavelength. In addition, the thermal diffusion dynamic process is sensitive to the surroundings and is nearly independent of the excitation wavelength and the fluence, whereas temporal signatures depend linearly on the excitation fluence and the absorption efficiency. Our results could improve the fundamental understanding of MXene-sunlight interaction and applications.

Abstract:The fabrication of photoluminescent Ti3 C2 MXene quantum dots (MQDs) by a facile hydrothermal method is reported, which may greatly extend the applications of MXene-based materials. Interestingly, the as-prepared MQDs show excitation-dependent photoluminescence spectra with quantum yields of up to ≈10% due to strong quantum confinement. The applications of MQDs as biocompatible multicolor cellular imaging probes and zinc ion sensors are demonstrated.

Abstract:MXene exhibits numerous advantageous properties such as high electronic conductivity, high surface area, and ease of surface modification via tailoring of functional groups. However, the mechanism by which MXene functionalization enhances gas sensing performance has not yet been well understood, let alone the development of a rational sensor design optimization strategy. This work presents a functionalization methodology for MXene based on d-band center modulation, which can be implemented by introducing Fe onto the surface of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, for significantly improved gas sensing response and selectivity. The strategy is demonstrated in the design of gas sensors. The optimized gas sensor shows a response of 50% toward 10 ppm of NO2 at room temperature, which is over 6-fold improvement from its pristine counterpart, an unprecedented performance level among all reported MXene gas sensors. XPS characterizations, valence band analyses, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations all indicate that the underlying enhancement mechanism can be attributed to the tuning of the d-band center energy toward the Fermi level. This work provides a new design strategy based on the optimization of the d-band center energy and adds a much needed systematic and quantitative method to the design of two-dimensional materials based semiconducting gas sensors.
Molecularly Imprinted Electrochemical Sensor Constructed by Ferrocene‐Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes for Rapid Recognition and Determination of Tryptophan

Abstract:A new tryptophan detection sensor utilizing molecularly imprinted ferrocene‐functionalized carbon nanotubes has been rationally designed. It features a broad detection range from 1 μM to 45 μM and from 45 μM to 330 μM, with an ultra‐low detection limit of 0.44 μM for tryptophan. This sensor has successfully detected tryptophan in real samples, including human serum and amino acid oral liquid, yielding excellent results. Molecular imprinting is an advanced technology in the fabrication of novel chemical sensors recently applied, enabling rapid responses and highly selective binding to specific molecules, thereby enabling efficient detection of material constituents. In this study, a new molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor (MIES) utilizing ferrocene‐functionalized carbon‐nanotubes (Fc‐CNTs) was developed for the determination of tryptophan (Trp). The formation of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) involves polymerization in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) using Trp, methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the template molecules, functional monomers, and cross‐linking agents, respectively. Due to the modification of MIPs, the sensor achieves high performance. The sensor demonstrates a linear range from 1 to 45 μM and from 45 to 330 μM, with the limit of detection of 0.44 μM, exceeding that of the majority of sensors reported in the literature. Furthermore, the sensor can effectively detect Trp in real samples, including human serum and amino acid oral liquid. The recovery rate of Trp in human serum samples is 94.2 % to 105.30 %, and in amino acid oral liquid is 94.3 % to 101.68 %. This study provides a promising approach for the effective detection and analysis of tryptophan constituents.

Abstract:In this study, a naked-eye visible and fluorescence-on Ag+ probe based on two-dimensional material MXene was successfully constructed. This study investigated the π–π and dispersive interactions between MXene and rhodamine-6G, and the reduction and growth of silver ions on the MXene surface. The characterization by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed our conjecture about this process. This probe shows competent highly selective real-time detection of Ag+ in aqueous solution with a 0.035 μM detection limit, which is also capable of Ag+ sensing in living cells. Comparing the fluorescence response of the probe to silver ions in the presence of other metal ions, it is confirmed that the probe has good selectivity to silver ions. In particular, this probe can also be carried out to detect and track Ag+ levels in living cells. The discoveries provide fresh insights into the detection and analysis of silver ions in environmental and biological samples. Meanwhile, this method also provides ideas for constructing MXene-based sensing platforms.

Abstract:Fluorescence quenching due to energy transfer from InP/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) to Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene materials was investigated by the transient absorption spectroscopy. During the fluorescence quenching, the photo-induced absorption feature in the transient spectrum was blue-shifted due to the higher photon energy required for the upward transition. The lifetime of stimulated emission was gradually extended from 0.86 μs to 2.28 μs with increasing Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. The fluorescence quenching of QDs can be quantitatively characterized by analyzing the lifetime of the stimulated emission feature in the transient absorption spectrum, which was used as a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene detection with the sensitivity of 6.63 mL/mg. The results of this study provide the basis for the design of optical sensors.

Abstract:MXene, a new class of two-dimensional nanomaterials, have drawn increasing attention as emerging materials for sensing applications. However, MXene-based surface plasmon resonance sensors remain largely unexplored. In this work, we theoretically show that the sensitivity of the surface plasmon resonance sensor can be significantly enhanced by combining two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and transition metal dichalcogenides. A high sensitivity of 198 ∘ /RIU (refractive index unit) with a sensitivity enhancement of 41.43% was achieved in aqueous solutions (refractive index ∼1.33) with the employment of monolayer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and five layers of WS 2 at a 633 nm excitation wavelength. The integration of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with a conventional surface plasmon resonance sensor provides a promising approach for bio- and chemical sensing, thus opening up new opportunities for highly sensitive surface plasmon resonance sensors using two-dimensional nanomaterials.

An Up-conversion signal probe-MnO2 nanosheet sensor for rapid and sensitive detection of tetracycline in food

Abstract:The irrational use of tetracycline (TC) poses a serious threat to human health, which calls for the development of efficient and reliable detection methods. Herein, an ideal sensor based on luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) between aptamer modified up-conversion nanoparticles as signal probes (donors) and manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanosheets (acceptors) was developed for TC detection in food samples. As a result of van der Waals forces between the nucleobases of the aptamer and the basal plane of MnO2 nanosheets, the distance of the donors and acceptors was shortened. The emission spectrum of the signal probes and the absorption spectrum of MnO2 nanosheets overlapped, resulting in LRET, and quenching of up-conversion luminescence. The TC-specific aptamer could fold into a complex conformational structure to provide recognition sites for TC. In the presence of TC, the aptamer was found to preferentially combine with TC due to the stacking of planar moieties, hydrogen bonding interactions and molecular shape complementarity, causing the separation of signal probes and nanosheets, and luminescence recovery. Consequently, a low detection limit of 0.0085 ng/mL was achieved with a wide detection range of 0.01-100 ng/mL. Moreover, the ability of the sensor to detect TC was confirmed in actual food samples and compared with the traditional ELISA with satisfactory results (p > 0.05).

Abstract:Simple PET chemosensors based on anthracene show a selective turn-on fluorescence sensing for Cu2+. The flexible receptor is favorable for turn-on sensing due to chelation enhanced fluorescence. Interestingly, the turn-on fluorescence sensing for Cu2+ is hardly disturbed by the competitive cations and other highly prevalent species in biological and environmental systems, implying a potential in the biological and environmental applications.

Abstract:A new type of 3D MOF, namely [Eu(L)2NO3]n(HL = 3,5-bis(triazol-1-yl)-benzoic acid), has been designed and synthesized. The unique crystal structure is derived from the combination of the ligand containing triazole moiety and lanthanide Eu(Ⅲ) ion. The application of the ratio of dual-signal improves the accuracy for detecting amino acids. The limit of detection for L-tryptophan in the range of 0–633 μM is 0.00424 μM, reaching a μM level. And the recycling experiment proves that the Eu-MOF can be used multiple times. This research provides great significance for using metal-organic framework (MOF) as the platform for fluorescent sensing.

Ε-Poly-l-lysine-protected Ti 3 C 2 MXene Quantum Dots with High Quantum Yield for Fluorometric Determination of Cytochrome C and Trypsin

Abstract:Titanium carbide quantum dots functionalized with ε-poly-L-lysine (PLL) were synthesized by sonication cutting and hydrothermal synthesis. The deprotonated Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots (Ti3C2 MQDs) exhibit excitation wavelength-dependent blue photoluminescence with typical excitation/emission peaks at 330/415 nm and a quantum yield of 22% due to strong quantum confinement. The fluorescence of ε-poly-L-lysine protected Ti3C2 MQDs (PLL-protected Ti3C2 MQDs) is reduced via an inner filter effect after the addition of cytochrome c (cyt-c). Response to cyt-c is linear in the 0.2 to 40 μM concentration range and the detection limit is 20.5 nM. In the presence of trypsin, cyt-c is hydrolyzed to small peptides, and the Fe3+ ion in cyt-c probably is reduced to Fe2+ with the aid of the digestive enzyme. This results in the restoration of the blue fluorescence of the modified MQDs. Fluorescence increases linearly in the 0.5 to 80 μg mL−1 trypsin concentration range with the detection limit of 0.1 μg mL−1. The method was successfully applied to the determination of cyt-c and trypsin in spiked serum samples.

Abstract:MXenes has attracted many researchers' attention as one of the latest two-dimensional (2D) material over the last decade. Their great potential for biosensing has also been fully exploited after their unique properties are recognized such as superior optical properties, excellent hydrophilicity, well thermal stability, excellent mechanic property, high electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, large surface area, and ease of surface functionalization. In MXene-based luminescence sensing strategy, MXenes typically appear in the form of nanosheets, quantum dots and modified MXenes nanocomposites, and they are utilized as different sensing platforms or luminescence source. In this review, we focused on the MXene-based luminescence sensing strategies, including fluorescence, electrochemluminescence and chemiluminescence sensors and the comparison of their performance. Finally, the perspectives of the MXene-based luminescence sensors were discussed.
