Abstract:There is a unique lake group landscape distributed in the hinterland and southeast of the Badain Jaran Desert (the BJD). The water circulation mechanism of the lake group in the BJD has been widely concerned by geographers. Buried lacustrine and peat sediments were found in the periphery of the modern lake group, which indicates the range of lake groups may be larger in the past. The paleoenvironment reconstruction based on these buried lacustrine and peat sediments could provide a better understanding of the spatial pattern evolution of the lake group in the BJD. In this study, we present a sediment profile record from Taoerlegetu (TR), one of the dried lake basins in the hinterland of the BJD, using multiple proxies of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), C/N ratio, δ13Corg, and mineral composition to discuss the environmental variations encompassing 10.9 to 5.5 cal kyr B.P. The organic matter mainly originates from aquatic plants, aquatic plants in different biotopes (water depth) have different δ13C values, allowing for the use of sedimentary δ13Corg value as a qualitative indicator for the water level of TR paleolake. The environmental reconstruction result shows that during 10.9 to 9.1 cal kyr B.P., the water level rises slowly, and the aquatic macrophytes occupied the lake basin. From 9.1 to 5.5 cal kyr B.P., the water level entered a higher stage and phytoplankton took the place of macrophytes as the major contributor to organic matter, but there is a relative drought period during 8.5 to 8.0 cal kyr B.P. The humid period of the lakes in the hinterland of the BJD in the early Holocene might be explained by the groundwater transported from the Northeast of the Tibet Plateau.
