Abstract:We propose a simple but rapid strategy to fabricate self-crosslinked dual-crosslinking elastomers (SCDCEs) with high mechanical properties. The SCDCEs are synthesized through one-pot copolymerization of Butyl acrylate (BA), acrylic amide (AM), and 3-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MEMO). Both the amino group on AM and the methoxy group on MEMO can be self-crosslinked after polymerization to form a dual-network crosslink consisting of hydrogen bonds crosslink and Si-O-Si covalent bonds crosslink. The SCDC endow optimal elastomer with high mechanical properties (the tensile strength is 6MPa and elongation at break is 490%) as the hydrogen bonds crosslink can serve as sacrificial construction to dissipate stress energy, while covalent crosslinking networks can ensure the elasticity and strength of the material. These two networks also contribute to the recoverability of the elastomers, leading them to recover their original shape and mechanical properties after being subjected to deformation in a short time.

A Facile and Environmentally Friendly Approach to Fabricate Hybrid Crosslinked Nitrile Butadiene Rubber with Comprehensively Improved Mechanical Performances by Incorporating Sacrificial Ionic Bonds

Abstract:It is a challenge to develop advanced elastomers with a combination of high strength, stiffness and toughness by a relatively convenient and environmentally friendly approach. Herein, we reported a facile and environmentally friendly method to prepare hybrid crosslinked nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) comprised of covalent and ionic bonds, and this hybrid crosslinked rubber possesses comprehensively improved mechanical properties, higher crosslinking density, deformation recovery and shape memory ability. The hybrid crosslinked NBR was prepared by incorporating 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and zinc oxide (ZnO) into NBR via internal milling together with dicumyl peroxide (DCP), and then vulcanization, which is a very simple and environmentally friendly method without extra procedure or treatment. The hybrid crosslinked network in NBR has randomly distributed covalent and ionic bond crosslinks, the strong covalent bonds serve as permanent crosslinks, imparting the elasticity, whereas the weak ionic bonds reversibly rupture and reform, dissipating the energy. Because of the restricting effect of ionic bonds on segmental movement, the hybrid crosslinked NBR shows higher glass transition temperature, lower loss factor peak value and longer relaxation time. By tuning the ionic bond strength via temperature, a much smaller range of linear viscoelastic region is observed for hybrid crosslinked NBR with high content of AMPS and ZnO at a relatively higher temperature, which endows the sample with shape memory ability. This design principle of incorporating ionic bonds to strengthen vulcanized NBR should be applicable to other diene rubber materials.

Abstract:The self-cross linking at ambient temperature hybrid silicone-acrylate emulsion was synthesized by adding functional monomer AAEMA into acrylate system which consisted of MMA,BA and MAA and then adding KH550 as crosslinking agent after polymerization.The silicone-acrylate emulsion obtained and its film were characterized by TEM,particle size analyzer,DSC,TGA,FT-IR.The effect of KH550/AAEMA molar ratio on the properties of latex film was investigated.The results show that the particle diameter of latex is about 100nm having relatively narrow distribution.The water resistance,ageing resistance,and mechanical properties of latex film are improved.

Abstract:The reversibly cross-linked rubber based on reversible covalent bonds is a promising route to realize the recycling of rubber. As a new telechelic liquid rubber, the primary amine-terminated cis-polybutadiene (AmTPB) was first chain-extended by terephthalaldehyde and then cross-linked by tris(2-aminoethyl)amine to prepare the reversibly cross-linked rubber (AmTPB-TA-TAA) based on imine bonds in one pot. It has been confirmed that the mechanical and thermal properties could be controlled by changing the molecular weight of AmTPB and the degree of chain extension. AmTPB-TA-TAA had the characteristics of recyclability and self-healing at high temperature due to the exchange reaction of imine bonds.

Abstract:Elastomers are an important class of polymer materials used in commodities and industrial products. Irreversible crosslinked (sulphur or peroxides) networks improve their mechanical and thermal properties, but recycling, reprocessing, and remoulding are difficult. Designing reversible crosslinking in elastomers is extremely attractive for extending product lifetime and recycling materials. Herein, a dual reversible crosslinking and fluorescence active elastomer is designed by synergistically introducing ionic interaction and [4+4] cycloaddition into the bromo butyl rubber (BIIR). In this case, a fluorescence active 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO)-anthracenyl derivative was synthesized and successfully functionalized onto the BIIR. The [4+4] cycloaddition of anthracenyl moieties contributed to dynamic covalent crosslinking, enhancing the mechanical strength of the BIIR ionomers. The resultant BIIR exhibits a tensile strength of 5.5±0.3 MPa, significantly greater than ionic aggregation alone (2.5±0.15 MPa). Because of dual responsive reversible networks, modified elastomer can undergo several reprocessing steps without considerably reducing their mechanical performance, which differentiates the modified elastomer from sulfur crosslinked rubber. The present work provides a strategy for transforming commercial elastomers into self-healable and recyclable elastomers using ionic and cycloaddition approaches.

Abstract:We report the employment of single-boron compounds as readily available cross-linkers for strengthening ethylene-methacrylic acid ionomers. The novel cross-linking strategy effectively strengthened the ionomers with enhanced mechanical and rheological properties, affording excellent (re)processability without changing the transparent appearance.

Abstract:This work takes advantage of the unique thermally reversible dissociation/association feature of C-ON bonds in alkoxyamine (Diol) to facilitate the reprocessability of poly(butyl methanol methacrylate) (PBMM) rubber with excellent thermal and mechanical properties. Isocyanate groups were incorporated into the PBMM backbone and then reacted with hydroxyl groups in Diol to obtain cross-linked PBMM rubber. Although its cross-linking degree is slightly lower than the conventional cross-linked rubber by an irreversible cross-linker (Dieg), it shows a higher tensile strength and elongation at break. Its decomposition temperature is about 50 degrees C higher than PBMM cross-linked by Dieg. Furthermore, the dissociation of C-ON bond at high temperature can break the cross-linking network of PBMM rubber to form a flowable and reprocessable melt and show an excellent ability of reshaping and healing; the association of thermally reversible C-ON bond can completely recover the cross-linking network and mechanical properties at a low temperature.

Abstract:Constructing dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) in rubbers provides a promising avenue to resolve the trade-offs between chemical crosslinking and recyclability. The reinforcement of dynamic covalent networks by nanofilling is widely adopted, which, however, inevitably hinders the exchange reaction of DCBs and network rearrangement due to the restrictions on chain mobility imposed by fillers. To date, the reinforcement of dynamic covalent networks without affecting the dynamic properties remains challenging. In this work, we report a dual dynamic crosslinking strategy by engineering reversible noncovalent bonds into dynamic covalent rubbers to improve mechanical performance and simultaneously maintain desirable malleability and reprocessability. Specifically, dynamic boronic ester-crosslinked styrene-butadiene rubber is firstly prepared and then modified through triazolinedione (TAD) click reaction. The grafted urazole groups can form hydrogen bond interactions that further aggregate to form clusters and phase-separation structure in the networks. Due to the reversible nature of hydrogen bonds, they can act in a sacrificial manner to dissipate mechanical energy, leading to a combination of improved strength, modulus and toughness of the networks. More importantly, the hydrogen-bonded clusters are dissociated at elevated temperatures, enabling the network dynamic properties to be largely preserved. In addition, the dynamic features of the dual crosslinks (hydrogen bonds and boronic esters) endow the TAD-modified networks with reconfigurable shape memory effect. Abstract:Covalently cross-linked rubbers are renowned for their high elasticity that play an indispensable role in various applications including tires, seals, and medical implants. Development of self-healing and malleable rubbers is highly desirable as it allows for damage repair and reprocessability to extend the lifetime and alleviate environmental pollution. Herein, we propose a facile approach to prepare permanently cross-linked yet self-healing and recyclable diene-rubber by programming dynamic boronic ester linkages into the network. The network is synthesized through one-pot thermally initiated thiol-ene "click" reaction between a novel dithiol-containing boronic ester cross-linker and commonly used styrene-butadiene rubber without modifying the macromolecular structure. The resulted samples are covalently cross-linked and possess relatively high mechanical strength which can be readily tailored by varying boronic ester content. Owing to the transesterification of boronic ester bonds, the samples can alter network topologies, endowing the materials with self-healing ability and malleability.

Abstract:Recent progress in introducing elegant dynamic covalent bonds into covalently crosslinked networks enabled the trade-offs between chemical crosslinking and recycling. Thus far, continuous efforts are made to exploit new dynamic chemistries to address the constrains of intricate preparation procedures and need of catalyst additives in creating dynamic covalent networks. In this work, we report an industrially feasible process to prepare catalyst-free malleable elastomers by engineering dithioacetals as the dynamic motifs into a commercial diene rubber. Specifically, a dithioacetal-containing diacid (BTA) is synthesized and used as a novel crosslinker for epoxidized natural rubber (ENR), by which dynamic dithioacetals are introduced into the elastomeric networks. Small molecule model study shows that dithioacetal exchange can be conducted at elevated temperature without catalyst. In the BTA crosslinked ENR, the thermoactivated dithioacetal exchange reactions can alter its network topologies in an associative pathway and confer it with remarkable reprocessability. The mechanical properties and relaxation rate of the networks can be readily manipulated by varying the dithioacetal concentration.

Abstract:Reinforcement, recycling, and functional applications are three important issues in elastomer science and engineering. It is of great importance, but rarely achievable, to integrate these properties into elastomers. Herein, we report a simple way to prepare covalently cross-linked yet recyclable, robust, and macroscopically responsive elastomer vitrimers by engineering exchangeable bonds into rubber–carbon nanodot (CD) interphase using CD as high-functionality cross-linker. The cross-linked rubbers can rearrange the network topology through transesterification reactions in the interphase, conferring the materials the ability to be recycled, reshaped, and welded. The relatively short chains bridging adjacent CD are highly stretched and preferentially rupture to dissipate energy under external force, resulting in remarkable improvements on the mechanical properties. Moreover, the malleable and welding properties allow the samples to access reconfigurable/multiple shape memory effects.

Abstract:Tough and adhesive elastomers are facilely developed via one‐pot photopolymerization of aqueous precursor solutions with in situ formation of sulfonate‐Zr4+ coordination complexes followed by solvent evaporation. Mechanical robustness and self‐adhesion properties enable the elastomer films to devise versatile soft electronics with patterned liquid metal and microchips. Coordination bonds with a dynamic nature and wide‐spectrum bond energy have gained great popularity in use for fabricating tough soft materials. However, most existing coordination‐based elastomers are prepared through complicated procedures, usually involving elaborate synthesis of ligand‐containing monomers or polymers, ion diffusion to form coordination complexes, and removal of organic solvent during the synthesis, which are neither easy operation nor environmentally friendly. Here, a facile and effective strategy is demonstrated to fabricate tough metallosupramolecular elastomers by one‐pot polymerization of aqueous precursor solutions containing commercial agents, 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid, 2‐[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethyl acrylate, and Zr4+ ions. After solvent (i.e. water) evaporation, the obtained elastomers are transparent and extremely tough owing to the presence of sulfonate‐Zr4+ coordination complexes as physical crosslinks. Their mechanical properties are tunable over a wide spectrum by adjusting the composition of copolymers and the density of coordination bonds. This eco‐friendly strategy is further extended to various commercial monomers, manifesting good universality to toughen elastomers. Furthermore, the abundant functional groups of copolymers make the elastomers adhesive to various substrates including themselves, favoring applications such as interfacial adhesion and encapsulations. The easy fabrication, tunable mechanical properties, and adhesion ability endow the elastomers with great potential as the substrate of wearable soft electronics.

Abstract:In this work, we describe a simple approach to design of a coordination crosslinked elastomer with extraordinary mechanical properties: self-healing and recycling abilities by introducing Co-cyano coordination into nitrile rubber(NBR) matrix. The formation of reversible coordination crosslink network results in good mechanical properties superior to conventional sulfur-cured NBR, such as high stretchability and toughness. The reversibility of metal-ligand bond endows the polymer with self-healing capability and recycling or reprocessing abilities by rearrangement at elevated temperature. The fully cut samples after self-healing or reprocessing can restore their original tensile strength. It is also worth noting that the reclaimed NBR exhibited higher modulus than its original sample due to the compensation of new metal-ligand bonds formed during heating. This study provides possibilities to extend lifetime, reshaping and recycling capabilities of commercial rubber and reduce toxicity and environmental issues caused by waste rubber.

Abstract:Mechanochemistry has injected new vitality into the chemical synthesis process in the solid state as a new, cleaner synthetic technology. Here, to overcome a series of problems induced by common rubber functionalization techniques, a mechanochemistry method based on one-step construction of the functionalized cross-linking network in rubber processing is proposed. Two commercial epoxidized elastomers, epoxidized butadiene rubber and epoxidized natural rubber, were subjected to roll-shearing force in the presence of dopamine. The contrast swelling phenomenon and the pulsed sonication experiment results of model liquid epoxidized polybutadiene with phenol indicates the dialkyl epoxides in epoxidized polybutadiene have intrinsic mechanical activity in the bulk state, and a cross-linking network containing amine and hydroxyl groups is therefore simultaneously constructed via rubber processing. Abstract:It poses a huge challenge to expand the application gallery of rubbers into advanced smart materials and achieve the reinforcement simultaneously. In the present work, inspired by the metal ligand complexations of mussel byssus, ferric ion was introduced into an oxygen-abundant rubber network to create additional metal oxygen coordination cross-links. Such complexation has been revealed to be highly efficient in enhancing the strength and toughness of the rubbers. Significantly, such complexation also enables the functionalization of the rubber into highly damping or excellent multishape memory materials. We envision that the present work offers an efficient yet facile way of creating advanced elastomers based on industrially available diene-based rubber.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Dual‐crosslinked supramolecular elastomers with the hybrid network consisting of hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds combine the reversibility of hydrogen bond and mechanical properties of covalent crosslinking network. In this article, isocyanate mixture is used as curing agent to prepare dual‐crosslinked elastomer based on bifunctional polydimethylsiloxane under mild condition. This method can effectively build up a hybrid network with the designed structure. A series of elastomers with same hydrogen bond density and variable covalent crosslinking degree are obtained. Swelling measurements and 1 H‐NMR spectra confirm the feasibility and controllability of curing method, the increasing of bifunctional isocyanate give rise to higher covalent crosslinking degree, improving the solvent resistance. The studies on viscoelastic property show that the introduction of an irreversible covalent crosslinking network stabilize the hybrid network, restrain the chain movement. The mechanical and self‐healing property studies reveal that the covalent crosslink significantly reinforce the whole network, while the reparable strength seems to mainly depend on the hydrogen bond density. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Strong and Tough Self-Healing Elastomers Enabled by Dual Reversible Networks Formed by Ionic Interactions and Dynamic Covalent Bonds

Abstract:A strong and tough self-healing elastomer is prepared based on double reversible networks consisting of ionic interactions and Diels-Alder (D-A) crosslinks. The elastomer is synthesized through one-pot copolymerization of a pair of oppositely charged monomers and furan functionalized methacrylate (FMA), which is then crosslinked with 1,1'-(Methylenebis(4,1-phenylene))bis(1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione) (BMI) via Diels-Alder (D-A) reaction. The oppositely charged monomers form ionic bonds which can segregate into aggregates with a wide distribution of size. Under heating or external force, the aggregates can dissociate from small to big ones to dissipate amount of energy and endow the materials with high mechanical properties (13 MPa in strength, 480% in stretchability). While the D-A crosslinks act as covalent bonds at room temperature and endow the materials with high elasticity and fast shape recovery ability. These two reversible networks with different dynamics contribute to the multiscale self-healing properties of the elastomer. As a result, the self-healing efficiency of the elastomer is as high as 86%.

Abstract:Crosslinked alpha-methylstyrene and acrylonitrile (MStAN) copolymer particles in a latex form were synthesized by free radical emulsion polymerization. The particles took a spherical shape with an average size of 53.1 nm in a narrow distribution. When filled into styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), and natural rubber (NR), the MStAN nanoparticles exhibited excellent reinforcing capabilities and the best in NBR. By the employment of heat treatment, mechanical properties of the MStAN-filled SBR composites had got remarkable further improvements. Abstract:It is a significant but challenging task to simultaneously reinforce and functionalize diene rubbers. Inspired by "sacrificial bonds", the authors engineer sacrificial hydrogen bonds formed by pendent urazole groups in crosslinked solution-polymerized styrene butadiene rubber (SSBR) via triazolinedione click chemistry. This post-crosslinking modification reveals the effects of the sacrificial bonds based on a consistent covalent network. The "cage effect" of the pre-crosslinked network facilitates the heterogeneous distribution of urazole groups, leading to the formation of hydrogen-bonded multiplets. These multiplets further aggregate into clusters with vicinal trapped polymer segments that form microphase separation from the SSBR matrix with a low content of urazole groups. The clusters based on hydrogen bonds, serving as sacrificial bonds, promote energy dissipation, significantly improving the mechanical properties of the modified SSBR, and enable an additional wide transition temperature region above room temperature, which endows the modified SSBR with promising triple-shape memory behavior.
Covalent-bond-forming method to reinforce rubber with cellulose nanocrystal based on the thiol-ene click reaction

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have been widely used in reinforcing polymers due to their excellent mechanical properties, whereas the poor compatibility between CNCs and hydrophobic rubber matrices limits their applications in elastomers and flexible devices. Moreover, hydrophobically modified CNCs cannot offer enough increment in mechanical properties because it lowers the interaction related to CNC. We thus introduced thiol-functionalized CNCs (mCNCs) into a nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) matrix to form covalent linkage between CNC and NBR via thiol-ene click reaction, which was fast, simple, byproduct-little, and controllable. The results from element analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the thiol substitution degree could be controlled from 0.33% to 0.98%. The obtained nanocomposites showed increased tensile strength (from 0.48 MPa to 2.28 MPa) and elongation at break (from 244% to 526%) as mCNC (0.98%) content increased. The increase in glass-transition temperature (from −30.01 °C to −22.73 °C) proved that the interaction between CNC and NBR was much higher than the interaction between NBR polymer chains. The result also indicated that the increment in mechanical properties was proportional to the thiol substitution degree. This highly efficient method is environmentally friendly and renewable, which can also be used for reinforcing other rubbers.
