Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is a transformative technology with many benefits, but also risks when applied to healthcare and cardiac surgery in particular. Surgeons must be aware of AI and its application through generative pre-trained transformers (GPT/ChatGPT) to fully understand what this offers to clinical care, decision making, training, research and education. Clinicians must appreciate that the advantages and potential for transformative change in practice is balanced by risks typified by validation, ethical challenges and medicolegal concerns. ChatGPT should be seen as a tool to support and enhance the skills of surgeons, rather than a replacement for their experience and judgment. Human oversight and intervention will always be necessary to ensure patient safety and to make complex decisions that may require a refined understanding of individual patient circumstances.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the potential applications and transformative impact of Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) technology in the fields of cardiac surgery and heart transplantation. The authors point out that with the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, especially GPT technology represented by ChatGPT, there is a significant application prospect in the healthcare sector. The paper mentions that GPT technology can support cardiac surgeons' work in various ways, including but not limited to: 1. **Preoperative Planning and Simulation**: By analyzing patient data, medical history, and diagnostic reports, GPT can assist in surgical risk assessment, recommend surgical techniques and treatment plans, and simulate different surgical scenarios to improve the quality of surgical preparation. 2. **Surgical Assistance and Decision Support**: As a virtual assistant, GPT can provide real-time information and support, helping doctors access the latest literature and guidelines to make more informed decisions. 3. **Intraoperative Monitoring and Analysis**: GPT can process real-time patient data, such as electrocardiograms (ECG) and blood pressure readings, promptly identifying abnormalities and alerting the medical team. 4. **Postoperative Care and Rehabilitation**: GPT can offer personalized guidance, monitor patients' recovery progress, and remotely answer questions related to medication use, lifestyle adjustments, and rehabilitation exercises. 5. **Research and Innovation**: GPT helps in collecting and analyzing large amounts of data, promoting the development of new surgical techniques, instruments, and postoperative care strategies. 6. **Training and Education**: GPT can create virtual scenarios to simulate surgical procedures, providing practice opportunities for medical students and surgeons, and offering real-time feedback. 7. **Emergency Support**: In emergency situations, GPT can quickly provide medical knowledge and decision support, helping doctors handle complex surgical situations. Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges that may arise with the introduction of GPT technology, such as ethical, legal, and technical issues, and how to balance the application of AI technology with the professional judgment of medical professionals. Finally, the authors emphasize that while GPT technology has enormous potential, it should be viewed as an auxiliary tool rather than a replacement, with human doctors always retaining the final decision-making authority.
