Abstract:Considering the rapid increase of CO2 emission, especially from power plants, there is a constant need for materials which can effectively eliminate post-combustion CO2 (the main component: CO2/N2 = 15/85). Here, we show the design and synthesis of a Cu(II) metal-organic framework (FJI-H14) with a high density of active sites, which displays unusual acid and base stability and high volumetric uptake (171 cm3 cm−3) of CO2 under ambient conditions (298 K, 1 atm), making it a potential adsorbing agent for post-combustion CO2. Moreover, CO2 from simulated post-combustion flue gas can be smoothly converted into corresponding cyclic carbonates by the FJI-H14 catalyst. Such high CO2 adsorption capacity and moderate catalytic activity may result from the synergistic effect of multiple active sites.

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics and unclear mechanism have significantly hindered the development of Li-CO2 batteries. Here, a Li-CO2 battery cathode catalyst based on a porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (TTCOF-Mn) with single metal sites is reported to reveal intrinsic catalytic sites of aprotic CO2 conversion from the molecular level. The battery with TTCOF-Mn exhibits a low overpotential of 1.07 V at 100 mA/g as well as excellent stability at 300 mA/g, which is one of the best Li-CO2 battery cathode catalysts to date. The unique features of TTCOF-Mn including uniform single-Mn(II)-sites, fast Li+ transfer pathways, and high electron transfer efficiency contribute to effective CO2 reduction and Li2CO3 decomposition in the Li-CO2 system. Density functional theory calculations reveal that different metalloporphyrin sites lead to different reaction pathways. The single-Mn(II) sites in TTCOF-Mn can activate CO2 and achieve an efficient four-electron CO2 conversion pathway. It is the first example to reveal the catalytic active sites and clear reaction pathways in aprotic Li-CO2 batteries.A porphyrin-based covalent organic framework with a single metal site and versatile transfer channel is designed as a Li-CO2 battery cathode catalyst for exploration of an aprotic CO2 conversion mechanism.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:An In-based metal-organic framework, with 1D nanotubular open channels, In2(OH)(btc)(Hbtc)0.4(L)0.6·3H2O (1), has been synthesized via an in situ ligand reaction, in which 1,2,4-H3btc is partially transformed into the L ligand. Compound 1 exhibits exceptional thermal and chemical stability, especially in water or acidic media. The activated 1 presents highly selective sorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) over dinitrogen. Interestingly, diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy with a carbon monoxide probe molecule demonstrates that both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites are involved in compound 1. As a result, as a heterogeneous Lewis and Brønsted acid bifunctional catalyst, 1 possesses excellent activity and recyclability for chemical fixation of CO2 coupling with epoxides into cyclic carbonates under mild conditions. In addition, the mechanism for the CO2 cycloaddition reaction has also been discussed.

Abstract:AbstractAs a new kind of crystalline porous polymers, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) exhibit great potential as electrode materials for rechargeable metal‐ion batteries due to their stable and adjustable structure, high porosity and abundant electrochemical active centers. In this paper, facile one‐step synthesis process is proposed to obtain the cobalt ion intercalated two‐dimensional β‐ketoenamine‐linked COF (Co−DAAQ−TFP‐COF, denoted as Co‐COF). The intercalation of Co ion in adjacent two layered structure of COF via coordination effects can activate the Li+ storage ability of aromatic ring in the original COF, greatly improve the utilization of redox active sites, shorten the migration length of electrons and ions, and promote fast lithium reaction kinetics. Adopted as the anode for lithium‐ion batteries, substantial improvement on the reversible capacity and cycling performance can be achieved for the obtained Co intercalated COF electrode (780 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 100 mA g−1) compared to original COF electrode (120 mAh g−1 under the same condition). The two‐dimensional COF materials with morphology justification and/or performance improvement via metal ion intercalation would promote the application of COF related electrodes for other energy‐storage fields.

Abstract:A combination of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and chemical fixation in a one-step process is attractive for chemists and environmentalists. In this work, by incorporating chelating multiamine sites to enhance the binding affinity toward CO2, two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Zn2(L)(2,6-NDC)2(H2O)]·1.5DMF·2H2O (1) and [Cd2(L)(2,6-NDC)2]·1.5DMF·2H2O (2) (L = N1-(4-(1 H-1,2,4-triazole-1-yl)benzyl)- N1-(2-aminoethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine, 2,6-H2NDC = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, DMF = N, N-dimethylformamide) were achieved under solvothermal conditions. Both 1 and 2 possess high selectivity for adsorption of CO2 over CH4 at room temperature under atmospheric pressure. Moreover, 1 has one-dimensional tubular channels decorated with multiactive sites including NH2 groups and coordination unsaturated Lewis acid metal sites, leading to efficient catalytic activity for chemical fixation of CO2 by reaction with epoxides to give cyclic carbonates under mild conditions.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has been acknowledged as a promising strategy to relieve carbon emissions by converting CO2 to essential chemicals. Despite significant progresses that have been made in neutral and alkaline media, the implementation of CO2RR in acidic conditions remains challenging due to the harsh conditions, especially in producing high-value multicarbon products. Here, we report that Cu-btca (btca = benzotriazole-5-carboxylic acid) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanostructures can act as a stable catalyst for the CO2RR in an acidic environment. The Cu-btca MOF undergoes phase transformation and morphology evolution during electrolysis, forming a stable porous Cu-btca MOF network. The resultant MOF network exhibits excellent selectivity toward ethylene and multicarbon products with Faradaic efficiencies of 51.2% and 81.9%, respectively, in a strong acidic electrolyte with a flow cell at 300 mA/cm2. Mechanism studies uncover that the Cu-btca MOF network can limit the proton reduction to suppress hydrogen evolution and maintain high local *CO concentration to promote CO2RR. Theoretical calculations suggest that two adjacent Cu sites in the Cu-btca MOF provide a favorable microenvironment for carbon-carbon coupling, facilitating the multicarbon production. This work reveals that rational structure control of MOFs can enable highly selective and efficient CO2 electroreduction to multicarbon products in strong acidic conditions toward practical applications.

Abstract:A molecularly woven cationic COF provides a catalytic microenvironment for CO2R and ensures efficient charge transfer from the electrode to the catalytic center, thereby achieving high electrocatalytic activity and high CO production selectivity of 94.45%. Coupling carbon capture with electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction (CO2R) to yield high‐value chemicals presents an appealing avenue for combating climate change, yet achieving highly selective electrocatalysts remains a significant challenge. Herein, two molecularly woven covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are designed, namely CuCOF and CuCOF+, with copper(I)‐bisphenanthroline complexes as building blocks. The metal–organic helical structure unit made the CuCOF and CuCOF+ present woven patterns, and their ordered pore structures and cationic properties enhanced their CO2 adsorption and good conductivity, which is confirmed by gas adsorption and electrochemical analysis. In the electrocatalytic CO2R measurements, CuCOF+ decorated with extra ethyl groups exhibit a main CO product with selectivity of 57.81%, outperforming the CuCOF with 42.92% CO at the same applied potential of 0.8 VRHE. After loading Pd nanoparticles, CuCOF‐Pd and CuCOF+‐Pd performed increased CO selectivity up to 84.97% and 95.45%, respectively. Combining the DFT theoretical calculations and experimental measurements, it is assumed that the molecularly woven cationic COF provides a catalytic microenvironment for CO2R and ensures efficient charge transfer from the electrode to the catalytic center, thereby achieving high electrocatalytic activity and selectivity. The present work significantly advances the practice of cationic COFs in real‐time CO2 capture and highly selective conversion to value‐added chemicals.

Abstract:Abstract To achieve high-efficiency catalysts for CO 2 reduction reaction, various catalytic metal centres and linker molecules have been assembled into covalent organic frameworks. The amine-linkages enhance the binding ability of CO 2 molecules, and the ionic frameworks enable to improve the electronic conductivity and the charge transfer along the frameworks. However, directly synthesis of covalent organic frameworks with amine-linkages and ionic frameworks is hardly achieved due to the electrostatic repulsion and predicament for the strength of the linkage. Herein, we demonstrate covalent organic frameworks for CO 2 reduction reaction by modulating the linkers and linkages of the template covalent organic framework to build the correlation between the catalytic performance and the structures of covalent organic frameworks. Through the double modifications, the CO 2 binding ability and the electronic states are well tuned, resulting in controllable activity and selectivity for CO 2 reduction reaction. Notably, the dual-functional covalent organic framework achieves high selectivity with a maximum CO Faradaic efficiency of 97.32% and the turnover frequencies value of 9922.68 h −1 , which are higher than those of the base covalent organic framework and the single-modified covalent organic frameworks. Moreover, the theoretical calculations further reveal that the higher activity is attributed to the easier formation of immediate *CO from COOH*. This study provides insights into developing covalent organic frameworks for CO 2 reduction reaction.

Abstract:We report a rare example of a sulfonate-based metal organic framework (MOF) possessing a prototypical primitive-cubic topology, constructed with Jahn-Teller distorted Cu(II) centers and a mixed-linker (organosulfonate and N-donor) system. The inherent highly polar, permanent porosity contributes to the highest reported CO2 sorption properties to date among organosulfonate-based MOFs, outperforming the benchmark carboxylate MOF counterpart. Importantly, density functional theory calculations confirm that the CO2-sulfonate interaction plays an important role in CO2 capture. Indeed, the hydrothermal product demonstrates high robustness over a wide pH range as well as aqueous boiling conditions, overcoming the moisture sensitivity of conventional Cu-2 paddlewheel-based MOFs. In addition, bulk synthesis of this material has been successfully achieved on a gram scale (>1 g) in a single batch with a high yield. Combining the high CO2 affinity and a robust nature, this sulfonate porous material is also an efficient, recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for CO2 fixation to form cyclic carbonates under ambient conditions.
Single atomic Cu-Anchored 2D covalent organic framework as a nanoreactor for CO2 capture and in-situ conversion: A computational study

Abstract:CO2 emission has emerged as a critical environment issue inducing greenhouse effects. How to capture CO2 and convert it into valuable chemicals is still a great challenge. Herein, we report a single atomic Cu-anchored covalent organic framework with Kagome lattice configuration (denoted as hex-Cu kgm-COF) and further investigate its properties in CO2 capture and conversion. Results indicate that hex-Cu kgm-COF shows not only a large CO2 adsorption capacity and high selectivity for CO2 over N2, but excellent hydrogenation activity of CO2 to form CH3OH and CH4, which are ascribed to the special configuration of kgm-COF with sufficient space and single atomic Cu active sites. In short, this work theoretically reports a novel adsorption and in situ conversion “2 in 1” nanoreactor to achieve the CO2 capture and resource utilization.

Abstract:We describe the design and synthesis of two new functionalized covalent organic frameworks, named Cz-COF and Tz-COF, by using monomers containing carbazole and benzobisthiazole as building blocks. The resultant materials possess high crystallinity, permanent porosities as well as abundant heteroatom activated sites in the framework. As solid adsorbents, both COFs exhibit excellent CO2 uptake (11.0 wt% for Cz-COF and 15.4 wt% for Tz-COF), high adsorption selectivity for CO2 over N-2 and good recyclability.

Abstract:Combination of capture and simultaneous conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals is a fascinating strategy for reducing CO2 emissions. Therefore, searching for heterogeneous catalysts for efficient catalytic conversion of CO2 is of great importance for carbon capture and utilization. Herein, we report a metalloporphyrin-based covalent organic framework (Co(II)@TA-TF COF) that can capture CO2 and simultaneously convert it into cyclic carbonates under mild conditions. The COF was designed to possess micropores for the adsorption of CO2 and integrated with cobalt(II) porphyrin (Co(II)@TAPP) units as catalytic sites into the vertices of the layered tetragonal networks. The structure of the Co(II)@TA-TF COF is unique where Co(II)@TAPP units are alternately stacked along the z direction with a slipped distance of 1.7 Å, which gives an accessible space to accommodate small molecules, making it possible to expose catalytic sites to substrates within the adjacent stacked layers. As a result, this COF is found to be highly effective for the addition of CO2 and epoxides. Importantly, the Co(II)@TA-TF COF exhibited a dramatic size selectivity for substrates. In conjunction with its reusability, our results highlight the development of a new function of COFs for targeting simultaneous CO2 absorption and utilization upon complementary exploration of the structural features of skeletons and pores. Such promising catalytic performance of the COF makes it possible for its potential practical application.

Abstract:Crystalline porous framework materials have attracted tremendous interest in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction owing to their ordered structures and high specific surface areas as well as rich designability, however, still suffer from a lack of accuracy in regulating the binding strength between the catalytic sites and intermediates, which is crucial for optimizing the electrocatalytic activity and expanding the product types. Herein, we report three new kinds of vinylene-linked metal-covalent organic frameworks (TMT-CH3-MCOF, TMP-CH3-MCOF and TMP-MCOF) with continuously tunable D-π-A interactions by adjusting the structure of the monomers at the molecular level for realizing efficient electroreduction of CO2 to formate for the first time. Interestingly, compared with TMT-CH3-MCOF and TMP-MCOF, the TMP-CH3-MCOF exhibited the highest HCOO- Faradaic efficiency (FEHCOO-) of 95.6% at -1.0 V vs RHE and displayed the FEHCOO- above 90% at the voltage range of -1.0 to -1.2 V vs. RHE, which is one of the highest among various kinds of reported electrocatalysts. Theoretical calculations further reveal that the catalytic sites in TMP-CH3-MCOF with unique moderate D-π-A interactions have suitable binding ability towards the reaction intermediate, which is beneficial for the formation of *HCOO and desorption of *HCOOH, thus effectively promoting the electroreduction of CO2 to formate.
