Abstract:We demonstrate that optical microfibers integrated in Yb-doped fiber lasers boost broadband noise-like pulse (NLP) generation via dispersion and nonlinearity management, with an optical spectrum spanning from below 1000 nm to beyond 1600 nm when the diameter of the optical microfiber is 1.2 µm. Numerical simulations show that dispersion and nonlinearity management provided by the optical microfiber is responsible for the broadband NLP generation. Furthermore, it is shown experimentally that dispersion and nonlinearity management via optical microfibers can also bring the highest optical rogue waves along with the broadest optical spectrum.

Abstract: We investigate the buildup dynamics of broadband Q-switched noise-like pulse (QS-NLP) driven by slow gain dynamics in a microfiber-based passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser. Based on shot-to-shot tracing of the transient optical spectra and qualitatively reproduced numerial simulation, we demonstrate that slow gain dynamics is deeply involved in the onset of such complex temporal and spectral instabilities of QS-NLP. The proposed dynamic model in this work could contribute to deeper insight of such nonlinear dynamics and transient dynamics simulation in ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:We report on the generation of rectangular noise-like pulses (NLPs) in an Er-doped figure-nine fiber laser. Massive subpulses inside the rectangular NLP are directly identified by utilizing a high-speed real-time oscilloscope. Our results could give more insights into the characteristics of rectangular NLPs.

Abstract:Noise-like pulses (NLPs) are relatively long (nanosecond or sub-nanosecond) wave packets exhibiting a fine inner structure of sub-picosecond pulses with varying amplitude and duration. The spectral domain of the NLPs has a wide wavelength envelope that exhibits highly variable wavelength emission intensity. An optical spectrum analyzer provides pseudo-stable, low-coherence, flat, and broadband spectral information of NLP, which then superimposed recording hundreds of thousands of NLP spectra. Therefore, NLPs can be widely applied in optical metrology, low-coherence spectral interferometry, spectral-domain optical coherent tomography, optical sensing and measurement, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and ablation threshold analysis, micro machining, and supercontinuum. This report mainly introduces some recent achievements in NLP fiber lasers. The research mainly includes the influence of reverse saturable absorption on the formation of NLPs, the generation of wide-spectrum NLP, the splitting of NLP, and the controllable generation of NLPs.

Abstract:We report on the influence of the average nonlinear coefficient on noise-like pulse (NLP) in a figure-of-eight erbium-doped fiber laser. Since the nonlinear switching point of nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) shifts with distinct laser configurations, through changing the length of highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) in NALM, properties of output pulse have been compared and analyzed. The spectral evolutions occur and the peak power of NLP presents a decline when the HNLF is lengthened in NALM. Also, the tuning range of the duration of NLP shows a difference based on the average nonlinear coefficient selected.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we demonstrate the generation and real-time dynamics of noise-like pulses (NLPs) in a 1.7 μm ultrafast thulium-doped fiber laser with all-fiber structure. NLPs with a central wavelength of ∼ 1742.5 nm and a 3-dB spectral width of ∼ 10.95 nm could be observed with pulse energy up to 4.19 nJ. The dynamic characteristics of NLPs were explored by using time-stretch dispersive Fourier transformation technology, which shows that the NLPs actually consist of many chaotic small pulse envelopes with random and changeable energies. These experimental results indicate that NLPs are the intrinsic features of fiber lasers and hold significant importance for further academic research, which can contribute to the development and application of 1.7 μm fiber laser in fields such as biomedicine and short-range remote sensing.

Abstract:Noise-like pulses (NLP) are extremely sought after in many fields. Here, we experimentally and numerically investigated the generation of noise-like pulses in an all-normal-dispersion fiber laser with weak spectrum filtering. With the insertion of the grating as a tunable spectrum filter, the laser operates at a stable dissipative soliton state with a 3.84 ps duration. Replacing the grating with a mirror, NLPs with double-scale intensity autocorrelation trace is ultimately attained. Numerical simulations are performed in detail and demonstrated that with the absence of a spectrum filter, the stable state cannot be established but form the random pulse cluster. The random pulse cluster achieves dynamic stability with suitable feedback, and the NLP is ultimately generated. The NLP here is directly evolved by the initial noise, and no other states occur during its evolution. These explorations could deepen the understanding of NLP and enrich the complex dynamics of the ANDi ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:The noise-like pulses (NLPs) with tunable fraction of the pedestal height in the whole intensity autocorrelation (AC) trace are numerically demonstrated in the designed erbium-doped fiber (EDF) mode-locked laser, which contains the saturable absorber (SA) with nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR), sinusoidal-shaped or Gaussian-shaped filter, two segments of EDFs, and two pieces of single-mode fibers (SMFs) with normal dispersion and anomalous dispersion, respectively. The pedestal ratio of the intensity AC trace can be tuned by changing the gain saturation energies of EDFs. The results show that when the net cavity dispersion is 1.06 ps 2 , the tuning range of the pedestal ratio for the NLPs can reach its maximum values, which are 0.51–0.89 and 0.58–0.88 for the sinusoidal-shaped and Gaussian-shaped filters, respectively. In addition, an appropriate choice of filter bandwidth is also conducive to obtain a wide range of the tuning pedestal ratio for the intensity AC trace.

Abstract:Amplified spontaneous Raman emission under picosecond pulse pumping is studied in detail both experimentally and numerically. It is found that the Raman output pulses are noise-like with partial coherence, which has important implications for various applications. Numerical simulation reproduces the finding well, along with the temporal and spectral dependence of the Raman pulse on the pump pulse energy. The numerical simulations of the temporal, spectral, and energy evolution of the Raman and pump pulse along the fiber gives insight on how to design such sources.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the nature of pulsating noise-like pulses (NLPs) in a fiber laser based on the nonlinear optical loop mirror. By adjusting the intra-cavity polarization, three types of pulsating NLPs can be obtained in the cavity. By utilizing the dispersive Fourier transformation technique, the real-time evolution dynamics of NLP pulsation have been investigated in detail. Different from the conventional pulsating behavior, the NLPs undergo remarkable and periodical variations in their width with slight changes in pulse peak powers during pulsation process. We speculate that the wavelength-dependent gain saturation is involved in the pulsating NLP evolution. Quasi-periodic energy oscillations are associated with cyclic generation and subsequent walkoff of wavelength-shifted components, resulting in the different pulsating dynamics of NLP. Moreover, during pulsation process, the NLP splitting could happen with the increasing of energy. All these findings will help to complement our understanding of NLP pulsation in a fiber laser.

Abstract:A stable noise-like pulse (NLP) in a figure-of-eight nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser is proposed and demonstrated. The work experimentally investigated the effect of dispersion in the generation and evolution of the NLP by varying the length of single mode fiber (SMF) in the NOLM bidirectional loop (bi-loop). The lengths are 5 m, 10 m, 15.2 m, 20.2 m, 25.9 m, 50.1 m, 76.9 m, and 103.7 m with their net cavity dispersion of −0.275 ps2, −0.386 ps2, −0.500 ps2, −0.611 ps2, −0.737 ps2, −1.269 ps2, −1.859 ps2, and −2.447 ps2, respectively. The stability of the NLP was first evaluated by analyzing a temporal trace of the spike and its pedestal from an autocorrelator, followed by a long-term stability test of 350 min. The work demonstrated a stable NLP was obtained at the SMF length of 25.9 m at a threshold pump of 260.6 mW. At the maximum pump power of 344.7 mW, the pulse energy of 7 nJ was obtained with the highest output power of 29.77 mW. The respective spike and pedestal widths were demonstrated to be at 236.87 fs and 65.74 ps, respectively. The net cavity dispersion was −0.737 ps2 with 49.82 m total cavity length, and the corresponding repetition rate was 4.25 MHz. This work presents the importance of dispersion management of the NOLM to generate a stable NLP at low threshold power.

Abstract:The study demonstrates a new type of laser that generates wavelength-tunable h-shaped noise-like pulses (NLPs). We incorporated the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) mechanism into a figure-eight erbium-doped hybrid mode-locked fiber laser based on the nonlinear amplifier loop mirror (NALM). Under an intra-cavity net dispersion of −5.535 ps2, the system produced NLPs with a maximum pulse duration of 24.54 ns, a maximum single energy of 19.96 nJ and a maximum output average power of 14.46 mW when the pump power was set to 543 mW. By adjusting the pump power and fine-tuning the polarization controller, the laser can output NLPs with tunable wavelengths ranging from 1560 to 1601 nm. The flexibility of wavelength-tunable techniques has potential applications in laser detection, high-energy physics experiments, and other fields, enriching the research framework of noise-like applications.

Abstract:An erbium-doped fiber laser that produces a train of intense noiselike pulses with a broadband spectrum and a short coherence length is reported. The noiselike behavior was observed in the amplitude as well as in the phase of the pulses. The maximum spectral width obtained was 44 nm. The high intensity and the short coherence length of the light were maintained even after propagation through a long dispersive fiber. A theoretical model indicates that this mode of operation can be explained by the internal birefringence of the laser cavity combined with a nonlinear transmission element and the gain response of the fiber amplifier.

Abstract:The passively Q-switched, self-pulsing all-solid-state laser is a device of widespread use in many applications. Depending on the condition of saturation of the absorber, which is easy to adjust, different dynamical regimes are observed: continuous-wave emission, stable oscillations, period doubling bifurcations, chaos, and, within some chaotic regimes, extreme events (EEs) in the form of pulses of extraordinary intensity. These pulses are sometimes called "dissipative optical rogue waves." The mechanism of their formation in this laser is unknown. Previous observations suggest they are caused by the interaction of a few transverse modes. Here we report a direct observation of the pulse-to-pulse evolution of the transverse pattern. In the periodical regimes, sequences of intensities are correlated with sequences of patterns. In the chaotic ones, a few different patterns alternate, and the EEs are related with even fewer ones. In addition, the series of patterns and the pulse intensities before and after an EE are markedly repetitive. These observations demonstrate that EEs follow a deterministic evolution, and that they can appear even in a system with few interacting modes. This information plays a crucial role for the development of a mathematical description of EEs in this laser. This would allow managing the formation of EE through control of chaos, which is of both academic and practical interest (laser rangefinder).

Abstract:In this paper, we report an experimental study of noise features of polarized and unpolarized amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) with narrow optical bandwidth, registered from a conventional low-doped erbium fiber. We demonstrate that ASE noise can be considered as train of Gaussian-like pulses with random magnitudes, widths, and inter- pulse intervals. The statistical properties of these three parameters of noise pulsing are analyzed. We also present the results on the influence of ASE noise upon optical spectrum broadening, produced by self-phase modulation at propagating along communication fiber, and demonstrate that ASE noise derivation stands behind the broadening shaping.

Abstract:We present here a theoretical analysis of the interaction between an ideal two-level quantum system and a super-oscillatory pulse, like the one proposed and successfully synthesized in <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1088/2040-8986/abfedf" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2106.09192" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2106.09192">arXiv:2106.09192</a>. As a prominent feature, these pulses present a high efficiency of the central super-oscillatory region in relation to the unavoidable side-lobes. Besides, our study shows an increase of the effective bandwidth of the pulse, in the super-oscillatory region, and not only the appearance of a local frequency higher than its highest Fourier-frequency component, as in the usual description of the phenomenon of super-oscillations. Beyond introducing the concept of effective super-bandwidth, the presented results could be relevant for experimental applications and opening new perspectives for laser-matter interaction.

High-energy Noise-Like Pulses Generated by an Erbium-Doped Fiber Laser Incorporating a PbS Quantum-Dot Polystyrene Composite Film

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-energy noise-like pulse (NLP) generated by an Er-doped fiber (EDF) laser incorporating a PbS quantum dot (QD) polystyrene (PS) composite film as a saturable absorber (SA). Benefitting from the intrinsic properties of NLPs and the high damage threshold of the PbS QD PS composite film, a stable NLP train can be obtained with an output power of 96.3 mW at a pump power of 660 mW, corresponding to a pulse energy of 9.68 nJ. This represents the highest pulse energy ever reported in an NLP EDF laser incorporating material-based SAs. The slope efficiency reached 17.37% and the steady NLP operation was able to be maintained for several hours under laboratory conditions. Our experimental results prove that the PbS QD PS composite film can serve as an effective SA to realize high-energy pulses in a mode-locked fiber laser.

Abstract:Noiselike generation in lasers can be controlled by changing the cavity in order to obtain pulses with unique properties. Intense noiselike pulses, as narrow as a few picoseconds, were obtained. These are two orders of magnitude narrower than pulses obtained in previous work. In long cavities, coherent and incoherent two-color noiselike generation were demonstrated. The wavelength difference between the generated pulses could be tuned in a wide wavelength range, which is much broader than the amplifier bandwidth. High-energy /spl ap/16-nJ noiselike pulses with a broad-band spectrum and narrow intensity autocorrelation trace were also demonstrated.
