Abstract:Sunlight exposure can degrade and transform discharged wastewater effluent organic matter (EfOM) in aquatic systems, potentially enhancing the feasibility of reusing wastewater for drinking purposes. However, there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the sunlight-induced changes in the molecular-level composition, characteristics, and chlorine reactivity of EfOM. Herein, we investigated the impact of sunlight on the optical properties, chemical composition, and formation of disinfection byproducts of EfOM using multiple spectroscopic analyses, high-resolution mass spectrometry, chlorination experiments, and in vitro bioassays. Upon natural sunlight exposure, we observed significant decreases in ultraviolet-visible absorbance and fluorescence intensity of EfOM, indicating the destruction of chromophores and fluorophores. Photolysis generally yields products with lower molecular weight and aromaticity, and with higher saturation and oxidation levels. Moreover, a shift within the EfOM from condensed aromatic-like compounds to tannin-like components was observed. Furthermore, sunlight exposure reduced the reactivity of EfOM toward the formation of trihalomethanes and haloacetonitriles during chlorination, while there was a slight increase in the specific formation potential of haloketones. Importantly, the disinfection byproducts resulting from chlorination of the irradiated EfOM exhibited reduced microtoxicity. Overall, this study provides new insights into alterations in EfOM under sunlight exposure and aids in predicting the health risks of effluent discharge in water environments.

Abstract:Ozonation is universally used during water treatment but can form hazardous brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs). While sunlight exposure is advised to reduce the risk of Br-DBPs, their phototransformation pathways remain insufficiently understood. Here, sunlight irradiation was found to reduce adsorbable organic bromine by 63%. Applying high-resolution mass spectrometry, the study investigated transformations of dissolved organic matter in sunlit-ozonated reclaimed water, revealing the number and abundance of assigned formulas decreased after irradiation. The Br-DBPs with O/C < 0.6 and MW > 400 Da were decreased or removed after irradiation, with the majority being CHOBr compounds. The peak intensity reduction ratio of CHOBr compounds correlated positively with double bound equivalent minus oxygen ratios but negatively with O/C, suggesting that photo-susceptible CHOBr compounds were highly unsaturated. Mass difference analysis revealed that the photodegradation pathways were mainly oxidation aligned with debromination. Three typical CHOBr molecular structures were resolved, and their photoproducts were proposed. Toxicity estimates indicated decreased toxicity in these photoproducts compared to their parent compounds, in line with experimentally determined values. Our proposed phototransformation pathways for Br-DBPs enhance our comprehension of their degradation and irradiation-induced toxicity reduction in reclaimed water, further illuminating their transformation under sunlight in widespread environmental scenarios.
The overlooked role of Cr(VI) in micropollutant degradation under solar light irradiation

Abstract:Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is ubiquitous in natural environments, whereas its role in the transformation of coexisting contaminants may have been overlooked. In this work, it was reported for the first time that the irradiation of Cr(VI) by solar light (solar light/Cr(VI) system) could effectively degrade various micropollutants with different structures. The removal efficiency of selected micropollutants was increased by 13.3–64.8% by the solar light/Cr(VI) system compared to that by direct solar photolysis. Meanwhile, the oxidation rates were enhanced by 2.2–21.5 folds, while they were negligible by Cr(VI) oxidation alone. Experiments by specific scavengers, probe compounds, fluorescence absorbance, and electron spin resonance analysis demonstrated that hydroxyl radical (•OH) was the major reactive species in the solar light/Cr(VI) system. Further experiments showed that the generation of •OH was closely related to the intermediate Cr(V) generated from Cr(VI) reduction, and Cr(V) could be re-oxidized back to Cr(VI). Increasing solution pH negatively affected model micropollutant (carbamazepine (CBZ)) degradation by the solar light/Cr(VI) system, mainly due to the decreased quantum yield of •OH at higher pH. Coexisting sulfate ions showed negligible effect on CBZ degradation in the solar light/Cr(VI) system, while the presence of bicarbonate, chloride, and humic acid inhibited CBZ degradation to varying degrees, owing to their diverse scavenging effects on •OH. Furthermore, moderate CBZ degradation was also achieved by natural solar light photolysis of Cr(VI). This study demonstrated the pivotal role of Cr(VI) in the transformation of micropollutants under solar irradiation, which advances the understanding of the fate of micropollutants in natural environments.

Abstract:Sunlight photodegradation has long been considered a significant process in lowering the concentrations of pharmaceuticals in surface waters and thus decreasing the ecological risk. For the first time, this study identified the significance of investigating the environmental photodegradation of a pharmaceutical residue mixture (rather than a single compound) and the associated toxicity of transformation byproducts in environmental waters, including rivers, hospital wastewaters, and effluents from wastewater treatment plants and pharmaceutical production facilities. Pharmaceuticals undergo phototransformation rather than mineralization (11-23% in 34 h). Pharmaceutical mixtures could possibly act as dissolved organic matter for each individual compound and subsequently affect the photolysis rates. The increased toxicity of irradiated pharmaceutical mixtures challenges the validity of the current understanding of sunlight photolysis. The implications of this work suggest that current knowledge concerning the occurrence, natural attenuation, ecotoxicity, and human health risks of pharmaceuticals is far from complete; photolysis is not necessarily a purification process.

Abstract:Sunlight-induced photochemical transformations greatly affect the persistence of organic pollutants in natural environment. Whereas sunlight intensity is well-known to affect pollutant phototransformation rates, the reliance of pollutant phototransformation kinetics on sunlight spectrum remains poorly understood, which may greatly vary under different spatial-temporal, water matrix, and climatic conditions. Here, we systematically assessed the wavelength-dependent direct and indirect phototransformations of 12 organic pollutants. Their phototransformation rates dramatically decreased with light wavelength increasing from 375 to 632 nm, with direct photolysis displaying higher wavelength-dependence than indirect photolysis. Remarkably, UV light dominated both direct (90.4–99.5 %) and indirect (64.6–98.7 %) photochemical transformations of all investigated organic pollutants, despite its minor portion in sunlight spectrum (e.g., 6.5 % on March 20 at the equator). Based on wavelength-dependent rate constant spectrum, the predicted phototransformation rate of chloramphenicol (4.5 ± 0.7 × 10 −4 s −1 ) agreed well with the observed rate under outdoor sunlight irradiation (4.3 ± 0.0 × 10 −4 s −1 ), and there is no significant difference between the predicted rate and the observed rate ( p -value = 0.132). Moreover, rate constant and quantum yield coefficient (QYC) spectrum could be applied for facilely investigate the influence of spectral changes on the phototransformation of pollutants under varying spatial-temporal (e.g., season, latitude) and climatic conditions (e.g., cloud cover). Our study highlights the wavelength-dependence of both direct and indirect phototransformation of pollutants, and the UV part of natural sunlight plays a decisive role in the phototransformation of pollutants.

Abstract:The ubiquity of various organic micropollutants in global water and wastewater has raised considerable concern about their cost-efficient elimination. This study reported that the novel UV 365 /FeTiO X /S(IV) system could accomplish superior abatement of different micropollutants (e.g., carbamazepine, CMZ) in 30–45 min with excellent reusability and stability of FeTiO X . In addition, this system functioned effectively to remove roxarsone and As(III)/As(V) by catalytic oxidation and adsorption, respectively. Mechanistic investigations suggested the dual roles of S(IV) in enhancing pollutant oxidation, i.e., promoted Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle and photocatalysis. These processes facilitated the continuous generation of multiple oxidizing intermediates (e.g., hydroxyl radicals, sulfate radicals, and singlet oxygen), in which the last one was first proposed as the main contributor in iron-mediated S(IV)-based oxidation processes. Based on the product identification, the transformation pathways of four different micropollutants were tentatively unraveled. The in silico prediction suggested the lower environmental risks of the final reaction products than the precursors. Particularly, the structural alteration of humic acid was analyzed, indicating an increased O/C ratio after oxidative treatment. Overall, this study has implications for developing an efficient oxidation technique for removing multiple micropollutants in water and facilitating the mechanistic reactivity modulation of the S(IV)-based oxidation strategies in water treatment.

A comparative study of UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PDS for the degradation of micro-pollutants: kinetics and effect of water matrix

Abstract:Organic micro-pollutants such as pesticides and endocrine disruptors cause serious harm to human health and aquatic ecosystem. In this study, the potential degradation of atrazine (ATZ), triclosan (TCS), and 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA) by UV-activated peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS) and UV-activated H 2 O 2 (UV/H 2 O 2 ) processes were evaluated under different conditions. Results showed that UV/PDS process was more effective than UV/H 2 O 2 under the same conditions. Increasing oxidant dosage or decreasing the initial ATZ, TCS, and TCA concentrations promoted the degradation rates of these three compounds. The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) could effectively scavenge sulfate radical (SO 4 • − ) and hydroxyl radical (HO•) and reduced the removal rates of target compounds. Degradation rates of ATZ and TCA decreased with pH increasing from 5.0 to 9.0 in UV/PDS process, while in UV/H 2 O 2 process, the increase of solution pH had little effect on ATZ and TCA degradation. In the UV/PDS and UV/H 2 O 2 oxidation process, when the solution pH increased from 5 to 8, the removal rates of TCS decreased by 19% and 1%, while when the solution pH increased to 9, the degradation rates of TCS increased by 23% and 17%. CO 3 2− /HCO 3 − had a small inhibitory effect on ATZ and TCA degradation by UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PDS processes but promoted the degradation of TCS significantly (> 2 mM). Cl − had little effect on the degradation of ATZ, TCA, and TCS in UV/H 2 O 2 process. Cl − significant inhibited on the degradation of ATZ and TCS, but the influence of Cl − on the degradation of TCA was weak in UV/PDS process. Based on these experimental results, the various contributions of those secondary radicals (i.e., carbonate radical, chlorine radical) were discussed. This study can contribute to better understand the reactivities when UV/PDS and UV/H 2 O 2 are applied for the treatment of micro-pollutant-containing waters.
UV-induced photodegradation of emerging para -phenylenediamine quinones in aqueous environment: Kinetics, products identification and toxicity assessments

Abstract:Substituted para -phenylenediamine quinones (PPD-quinones) are a class of emerging contaminants frequently detected in the aqueous environment. One of them, N -(1,3-dimethylbutyl)- N′ -phenyl- p -phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q), was found to cause acute toxicities to aquatic species at extremely low environmental levels. The ubiquitousness and ecotoxicity of such pollutants underscore the importance of their transformation and elimination. In this work, we demonstrated effective removals of five PPD-quinones in aqueous environments under UV irradiation, with up to 94% of 6PPD-Q eliminated after a 40-min treatment. By applying high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) non-targeted screening in combination with isotope labeling strategies, a total of 22 transformation products (TPs) were identified. Coupling with the time-based dynamic patterns, potential transformation mechanisms were identified as an •OH-induced photocatalysis reaction involving bond cleavage, hydroxylation, and oxidation. Computational toxicity assessment predicted lower aquatic toxicity of the TPs than their parent PPD-quinones. Our results in parallel evidenced an obvious reduction of PPD-quinones accompanied by the presence of their TPs in the effluent after UV disinfection in real municipal wastewater. This work builds a comprehensive understanding of the fate, transformation products, and related toxicological characteristics of emerging PPD-quinone contaminants in the aqueous environment.

Abstract:Natural sunlight can reduce the chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) and biological effects from the discharged domestic wastewater. But the aquatic photolysis and biotoxic variations of specific CECs detected in secondary effluent (SE) were not clear. In this study, 29 CECs were detected in the SE, and 13 medium- and high-risk CECs were identified as target chemicals based on their ecological risk assessment. To comprehensively explore the photolysis properties of the identified target chemicals, the direct and self-sensitized photodegradation of the target chemicals, even the indirect photodegradation in the mixture, were investigated and compared with these photodegradation in the SE. Of the 13 target chemicals, only five chemicals (including dichlorvos (DDVP), mefenamic acid (MEF), diphenhydramine hydrochloride (DPH), chlorpyrifos (CPF), and imidacloprid (IMI)) underwent direct and self-sensitized photodegradation processes. The removal of DDVP, MEF, and DPH was attributed to self-sensitized photodegradation, which was mainly mediated by •OH; CPF and IMI primarily relied on direct photodegradation. Synergistic and/or antagonistic actions that occurred in the mixture improved/decreased the rate constants of five photodegradable target chemicals. Meanwhile, the biotoxicities (acute toxicity and genotoxicity) of the target chemicals (including individual chemicals and the mixture) were significantly reduced, which can explain the reduction of biotoxicities from SE. For the two refractory high-risk chemicals, atrazine (ATZ) and carbendazim (MBC), algae-derived intracellular dissolved organic matter (IOM) on ATZ, and IOM and extracellular dissolved organic matter (EOM) on MBC had slightly promotion for their photodegradation; while peroxysulfate, and peroxymonosulfate served as sensitizers were activated by natural sunlight and effectively improved their photodegradation rate, and then reduced their biotoxicities. These findings will promote the development of CECs treatment technologies based on sunlight irradiation.

Abstract:The ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine process has been widely applied for water treatment. However, the transformation of microplastic-leached dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) in advanced treatment of real wastewater remains unclear. Here, we investigated alterations in the photoproperties of MP-DOM leached from biodegradable and conventional microplastics (MPs) and their subsequent effects on the degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) by the UV/chlorine process. Spectroscopy was used to assess photophysical properties, focusing on changes in light absorption capacity, functional groups, and fluorescence components, while photochemical properties were determined by calculating the apparent quantum yields of reactive intermediates (ΦRIs). For photophysical properties, our findings revealed that the degree of molecular structure modification, functional group changes, and fluorescence characteristics during UV/chlorine treatment are closely linked to the type of MPs. For photochemical properties, the ΦRIs increased with higher chlorine dosages due to the formation of new functionalities. Both singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) formation were strongly correlated with excited triplet state of DOM (3DOM*) in the UV/chlorine treatment. Additionally, we found that the four types of MP-DOM inhibit the degradation of SMT and elucidated the mechanisms behind this inhibition. We also proposed degradation pathways for SMT and assessed the ecotoxicity of the resulting intermediates. This study provides important insights into how the characteristics and transformation of MP-DOM affect contaminant degradation, which is critical for evaluating the practical application of UV-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs).

Abstract:Many micropollutants are refractory to conventional wastewater/water treatment processes, causing attention to their potential adverse effects on aquatic environment and human health. The synchronous use of ultraviolet and chlorine (UV/chlorine) is an emerging advanced oxidation process drawing increasing interest, due to its relatively low cost and the effectiveness in degradation of refractory micropollutants via generating various reactive species, such as hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) and reactive chlorine species (RCS). This review documented the latest research on micropollutant degradation in the UV/chlorine process, and factors affecting the degradation efficiencies of target micropollutants, including UV fluence rate, chlorine dosage, pH, water matrix, and the reactivity of different radicals. Most recently, concerns have been raised over the formation of toxic transformation products and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the UV/chlorine process. The toxicity variation of micropollutants during the UV/chlorine treatment, and the multiple effects of the UV/chlorine process on the formation of DBPs were also reviewed. It was found that the toxicity variations of micropollutants in the UV/chlorine treatment were related to the compound-specific reactivity toward center dot OH and RCS. Further studies on the cost-effectiveness of the UV/chlorine process regarding micropollutant degradation without increasing the associated toxicity might be warranted.

Abstract:Microwave-induced oxidation and UV/TiO2 photocatalytic technologies are widely used for organic wastewater treatment. Furthermore, the combination of these technologies (MW/UV/TiO2) result in a new advanced oxidation process. As a green and efficient photocatalytic degradation technology, MW/UV/TiO2 is favored for its advantages of high removal rate, short time use, wide concentration range, low cost, good stability, and no secondary pollution. Herein, this paper has summarized insights into the removal process by unveiling the degradation mechanism of organic compounds with MW-assisted technology. Additionally, water quality factors and process parameters affect the photocatalytic efficiencies, consisting of initial concentration, initial volume, TiO2 dosage, UV intensity, microwave power, temperature, pH, and fluid velocity, which have been systematically analyzed. Finally, possible future research directions and guidelines are proposed. Our findings will provide a way forward for the development of effective microwave-assisted remediation technologies that are broadly applicable to various environmental contamination scenarios.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis offers a promising and sustainable avenue for wastewater treatment due to its ease of separation and recyclability. However, their practical application is currently hampered by limited energy utilization, insufficient mineralization, and low treatment capacity under sunlight. This account summarizes our progress in developing broad-spectrum responsive (extended to 950 nm) supramolecular organic photocatalysts capable of sunlight-driven over 95% pollutant mineralization. Through modulation of molecular dipole and crystallinity, we enhance the built-in electric field, thereby improving charge separation and photodegradation rates. Furthermore, to overcome the low-flux constraints of traditional photocatalysis, we integrated the Fenton catalyst to construct photo-self-Fenton systems, realizing a 29.63 L m 2 h 1 high-flux mineralization under sunlight. Finally, a brief conclusion and outlook on organic photocatalysts have also been presented. Most organic pollutants are not completely mineralized during UV-AOPs but are partially oxidized into transformation products (TPs), thereby adding complexity to the treated water and posing risks to humans, ecological systems, and the environment. While the degradation kinetics and mechanisms of pollutants have been widely documented, there is little information about the risks associated with TPs. In this review, we have collated recent knowledge about the harmful TPs that are generated in UV/H2O2 and UV photocatalysis, two UV-AOPs that have been studied extensively. Toxic and assimilable TPs were ubiquitously observed in more than 80% of UV-AOPs of organic pollutants, of which the toxicity and assimilability levels changed with variations in the reaction conditions, such as the UV fluence and oxidant dosage. Previous studies and modeling assessments showed that toxic and assimilable TPs may be generated during hydroxylation, dealkylation, decarboxylation, and deamination. Among various reactions, TPs generated from dealkylation and decarboxylation were generally less and more toxic than the parent pollutants, respectively; TPs generated from decarboxylation and deamination were generally less and more assimilable than the parent pollutants, respectively. There is also potential concern about the sensory-unpleasant TPs generated by oxidations and subsequent metabolism of microorganisms. In this overview, we stress the need to include both the concentrations of organic pollutants and the evaluations of the risks from TPs for the quality assessments of the water treated by UV-AOPs.
Elimination of Disinfection Byproduct Formation Potential in Reclaimed Water During Solar Light Irradiation.

Abstract:Ecological storage of reclaimed water in ponds and lakes is widely applied in water reuse. During reclaimed water storage, solar light can degrade pollutants and improve water quality. This study investigated the effects of solar light irradiation on the disinfection byproduct formation potential in reclaimed water, including haloacetonitriles (HANs), trichloronitromethane (TCNM), trihalomethanes (THMs), haloketones (HKs) and chloral hydrate (CH). Natural solar light significantly decreased the formation potential of HANs, TCNM, and HKs in reclaimed water, but had a limited effect on the formation potential of THMs and CH. Ultraviolet (UV) light in solar radiation played a dominant role in the decrease of the formation potential of HANs, TCNM and HKs. Among the disinfection byproducts, the removal kinetic constant of dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) with irradiation dose was much larger than those for dichloropropanone (1,1-DCP), trichloropropanone (1,1,1-TCP) and TCNM. During solar irradiation, fluorescence spectra intensities of reclaimed water also decreased significantly. The removal of tyrosine (Tyr)-like and tryptophan (Trp)-like protein fluorescence spectra intensity volumes was correlated to the decrease in DCAN formation potential. Solar irradiation was demonstrated to degrade Trp, Tyr and their DCAN formation potential. The photolysis products of Trp after solar irradiation were detected as kynurenine and tryptamine, which had chloroform, CH and DCAN formation potential lower than those of Trp.
Insight into micropollutant abatement during ultraviolet light-emitting diode combined electrochemical process: Reaction mechanism, contributions of reactive species and degradation routes

Abstract:Electrochemical process coupling with ultraviolet light-emitting diode for micropollutant abatement was evaluated in the treatment of wastewater containing Cl − . Four representative micropollutants, atrazine, primidone, ibuprofen and carbamazepine, were selected as target compounds. The impacts of operating conditions and water matrix on micropollutant degradation were investigated. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy spectra and high performance size exclusion chromatography were employed to characterize the transformation of effluent organic matter in treatment. The degradation efficiencies of atrazine, primidone, ibuprofen and carbamazepine are 83.6 %, 80.6 %, 68.7 % and 99.8 % after 15 min treatment, respectively. The increment of current, Cl − concentration and ultraviolet irradiance promote the micropollutant degradation. However, the presence of bicarbonate and humic acid inhibit micropollutant degradation. The mechanism of micropollutant abatement was elaborated based on reactive species contributions, density functional theory calculation and degradation routes. Free radicals (HO • , Cl • , ClO • and Cl 2 •- ) could be generated by chlorine photolysis and subsequent propagation reactions. The concentrations of HO • and Cl • are 1.14 × 10 −13 M and 2.0 × 10 −14 M in optimal condition, respectively, and the total contributions of HO • and Cl • for the degradation of atrazine, primidone, ibuprofen and carbamazepine are 24 %, 48 %, 70 % and 43 %, respectively. The degradation routes of four micropollutants are elucidated based on intermediate identification, Fukui function and frontier orbital theory. Micropollutants can be effectively degraded in actual wastewater effluent, and the small molecule compound proportion increases during effluent organic matter evolution. Compared with photolysis and electrolysis, the coupling of the two processes has potential for energy saving in micropollutant degradation, which shed light on the prospects of ultraviolet light-emitting diode coupling with electrochemical process for effluent treatment.

Abstract:N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q) has been identified to induce acute toxicity to multifarious aquatic organisms at exceptionally low concentrations. The ubiquity and harmful effects of 6PPD-Q emphasize the critical need for its degradation from water ecosystems. Herein, we explored the transformation of 6PPD-Q by an ultraviolet-activated peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) system, focusing on mechanism, products and toxicity variation. Results showed that complete degradation of 6PPD-Q was achieved when the initial ratio of PMS and 6PPD-Q was 60:1. The quenching experiments and EPR tests indicated that SO4•- and •OH radicals were primarily responsible for 6PPD-Q removal. Twenty-one degradation products were determined through high-resolution orbitrap mass spectrometry, and it was postulated that hydroxylation, oxidative cleavage, quinone decomposition, ring oxidation, as well as rearrangement and deamination were the major transformation pathways of 6PPD-Q. Toxicity prediction revealed that all identified products exhibited lower acute and chronic toxicities to fish, daphnid and green algae compared to 6PPD-Q. Exposure experiments also uncovered that 6PPD-Q considerably reduced the community diversity and altered the community assembly and functional traits of the sediment microbiome. However, we discovered that the toxicity of 6PPD-Q degradation solutions was effectively decreased, suggesting the superior detoxifying capability of the UV/PMS system for 6PPD-Q. These findings highlight the underlying detrimental impacts of 6PPD-Q on aquatic ecosystems and enrich our understanding of the photochemical oxidation behavior of 6PPD-Q.
Photo-Transformation Of Pharmaceutically Active Compounds In The Aqueous Environment: A Review

Abstract:In the past few years, the fate and transportation of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in aqueous environments have raised significant concerns among the public, scientists and regulatory groups. Photodegradation is an important removal process in surface waters. This review summarizes the last 10 years (2003-2013) of studies on the solar or solar-simulated photodegradation of PhACs in aqueous environments. The PhACs covered include: beta-blockers, antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs ( NSAIDs), histamine H-2-receptor antagonists, lipid regulators, carbamazepine, steroid hormones, and X-ray contrast media compounds. Kinetic studies, degradation mechanisms and toxicity removal are the three major topics involved in this review. The quantum yield for the direct photolysis of PhACs and the bimolecular reaction rate constants of PhACs with reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as the OH radical and singlet oxygen, are also summarized. This information is not only important to predict the PhAC photodegradation fate, but also is very useful for advanced treatment technologies, such as ozone or advanced oxidation processes.
Overview of the Phototransformation of Wastewater Effluents by High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Photochemical transformation driven by sunlight is one of the most important natural processes for organic contaminant attenuation. In the current study, statistical analysis-assisted high-resolution mass spectrometry was employed to investigate the phototransformation of nontarget features in wastewater effluents under various radical quenching/enhancing conditions. A total of 9694 nontarget features were extracted from the effluents, including photoresistant features, photolabile features, and transformation products. 65% of the wastewater effluent features were photoresistant, and the photolabile features could be classified into five groups: direct photolysis group (group I), HO•-originated species-dominated group (group II), 3OM*-dominated group (group III), photochemically produced reactive intermediates combination-dominated group (group IV), and non-first-order degradation group (group V). The direct photolyzed features were observed to degrade significantly faster than the indirect photolyzed features. Moreover, group II dominated by HO•-originated species contributed 34% to the photolabile features. The reaction types that occurred in the phototransformation process were analyzed by linkage analysis. The results suggested that oxygen addition and dealkyl group reactions were the most common reaction types identified in the phototransformation process. Overall, high-resolution mass spectrometry coupled with statistical analysis was applied here to understand the photochemical behavior of the unknown features in wastewater effluents.
