Abstract:In order to study the mechanism of increasing bioavailability of ferrous iron (Fe2+) combined with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in the process of biogas production by anaerobic fermentation, three groups of simulated coal seam biogas production experiments were set up with raw coal, raw coal + Fe2+, and raw coal + Fe2+ + EDTA. The methane production, occurrence state of Fe, activity of hydrogenase in reaction solution, concentration of Fe2+ and the colony structure of archaea were analyzed. The change of Fe bioavailability of three groups of experiments was clarified. The results showed that upon adding Fe2+ and EDTA, the methane production increased by 22.07% and 35.71%, respectively, and the hydrogenase activity increased by 4% and 36%, respectively. The addition of EDTA significantly reduced the ratio of Fe to inorganic state. The proportion of available Fe in the experimental group with Fe2+ and EDTA was the highest, which was 26.2%, twice that of the raw coal experimental group. The combination of Fe2+ and EDTA could significantly improve the activity of bacteria, optimize the community structure of archaea, and promote more available Fe to be preserved in the reaction system, thereby improving the availability of metal elements.
