Abstract:This article presents a new molecular strategy for constructing a pyrene‐based narrow‐band blue emitter for a high‐performance organic light‐emitting diode with CIEy < 0.12. High‐efficiency organic blue light‐emitting materials with narrow‐band emission are fundamental components for constructing high color purity and high resolution in high‐performance organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) devices. Herein, new pyrene‐based blue emitters (8–10) with narrow‐band emission are synthesized by asymmetrically introducing biphenyl and triphenylamine units at the 1‐ and 3‐positions of pyrene, respectively. Due to the steric effect and through‐space conjugation, the synergistic effects of both groups not only boost these emitters 8–10 (CIEy 0.68), but also endow narrow full width at half maxima (FWHM) emission (≤36 nm) in the crystallized state (FWHM ≤ 55 nm in the film state). The EL spectra of pyrene‐based 8–10 in nondoped OLEDs exhibit blue emission with a maximum emission (λmax em) in the range of 448–453 nm (CIEy ≤ 0.12). The compounds 8–10 in doped‐OLEDs show a blue emission with a λmax em in the range of 443–445 nm and CIEy ≤ 0.08, with FWHM emission of 57–61 nm. The compound 10‐based doped OLED displays an impressive EL performance with a maximum brightness of 9756 cd m−2 and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 2.58%.

Abstract:Two highly efficient blue light-emitting materials, 9-phenyl-9-pyrenylfluorene substituted pyrenes (P1,P2), were designed and synthesized. The two compounds demonstrated highly thermal stability and bright blue emission both in solution and in the solid state. Even after being annealed at 150°C under nitrogen for 24h, the solid emission spectra showed no obvious changes. The high energy levels of the HOMO (about −5.2eV) exhibit that they have improved hole-injection/transporting ability. A three layer blue OLED of ITO/TCTA (8nm)/P2 (30nm)/BCP (40nm)/Mg:Ag was obtained with high efficiency (3.08cd/A, 1.17lm/W), low turn-on voltage (3.5V) and high brightness (19885cd/m2) in ambient air, which is competitive with the best of the doped and nondoped blue OLEDs. These results revealed that these materials are promising as blue emitters for high efficiency OLEDs with a much simpler architecture. We thus exemplified that introducing 9-phenyl-9-pyrenylfluorene onto large aromatic rings is a new method to employ fluorescent dyes with large planar aromatic rings as the blue emitters in nondoped OLEDs without a hole-injection layer.
Pyrene-fluorene hybrids containing acetylene linkage as color-tunable emitting materials for organic light-emitting diodes

Abstract:New blue- to yellow-emitting materials have been developed by incorporating fluorene-based chromophores on pyrene core with acetylene linkage and using multifold palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Both mono- and tetrasubstituted derivatives have been synthesized and characterized. The tetrasubstituted derivatives displayed red-shifted emission when compared to the monosubstituted derivative indicative of an extended conjugation in the former. End-capping with a diphenylamine unit further red-shifted the absorption and emission profiles and imparted a weak dipolar character to the molecules. Amine-containing derivatives displayed positive solvatochromism in the fluorescence spectra indicating a more polar excited state due to an efficient charge migration from the diphenylamine donor to the pyrene π-acceptor. All of the derivatives were tested as emitting dopants with host material 4,4'-bis(9H-carbazol-9-yl)biphenyl (CBP) in a multilayered OLED and found to exhibit bright blue or yellow electroluminescence. The device utilizing 1,3,6,8-tetrasubstituted pyrene derivative as a dopant emitter displayed highest maximum luminescence 4630 cd/m(2) with power efficiency 3.8 lm/W and current efficiency 7.1 cd/A at 100 cd/m(2) attributable to the proper alignment of energy levels that led to the efficient harvesting of excitons. All of the devices exhibited color purity over a wide range of operating voltages.

Abstract:Metal-free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have emerged as promising candidate materials for highly efficient and low-cost organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, a novel acceptor 2-cyanopyrazine is selected for the construction of blue TADF molecules via computer-assisted molecular design. Both theoretical prediction and experimental photophysical data indicate a small S1-T1 energy gap (ΔE ST) and a relative large fluorescence rate (k F) in an o-phenylene-bridged 2-cyanopyrazine/3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole compound (TCzPZCN). The k F value of 3.7 × 107 s-1 observed in a TCzPZCN doped film is among the highest in the TADF emitters with a ΔE ST smaller than 0.1 eV. Blue TADF emission is observed in a TCzPZCN doped film with a short TADF lifetime of 1.9 μs. The OLEDs using TCzPZCN as emitter exhibit a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.6% with low-efficiency roll-off. A sky-blue device containing a derivative of TCzPZCN achieves an improved EQE maximum of 12.2% by suppressing the non-radiative decay at T1.

Abstract:High efficiency deep-blue emitters are one of the basic requests for an outstanding full-color organic light emitting diode (OLED) display. Herein, a linear D-A-D diphenylpyrazine structure is designed for maximizing the π-conjugation effect, whilst two deep-blue (DPP-DPhC and DPP-D3C) and one blue (DPP-DTPA) fluorophores are synthesized by incorporating the N-phenylcarbazole and triphenylamine donor units, respectively. As a result, they emit bright deep-blue to blue fluorescence with the luminescence quantum yields of 0.312–0.888 in solid state. Fortunately, all the non-doped and doped OLED devices show deep-blue (N-phenylcarbazole disubstituted compounds, DPP-DPhC and DPP-D3C) and blue (triphenylamine derivative, DPP-DTPA) electroluminescence (EL) performance with the maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of >4%. Comprehensively considering other parameters, the deep-blue non-doped OLED device based on DPP-DPhC exhibits the best EL performance with the maximum EQE of 5.73% with the Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIEx,y) coordinate of (0.151, 0.078) among them. These results demonstrate the feasibility of this strategy and provide a simple method to achieve high efficiency deep-blue emitters.

Abstract:A series of red dopants, i.e., 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(o-methoxy(p-diethylamino))-4H-pyran (A), 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(o-ethoxy(p-diethylamino))-4H-pyran (B), 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(o-(n-proplyoxy) (p-diethylamino))-4H-pyran (C) and 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(o-(n-butoxy) (p-diethylamino))-4H-pyran (D) for application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been synthesized and characterized. It was found that by introducing a (diethylamino)-2-alkoxy segment as electron donor and 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-4H-pyran moiety as electron acceptor to form the molecular skeleton, the resultant emitters have high photoluminescent quantum yields and saturated red emissions. OLEDs devices based on the present emitters at varying doping levels have been fabricated. Devices using the new emitters as the dopant at about 1wt% doping levels show excellent performances. The luminance of them can achieve 8785–12540cd/m2 with the highest luminous efficiency around 2.0lm/W.

Abstract:Color‐pure blue emitters are in great demand for ultra‐high‐definition organic light emitting diodes displays. Here, a simple and clear concept to design such emitters is presented. The application of this concept allows to derive a new structural motif, which is used to synthesize novel color‐pure emitters with brilliant blue hue. Current research on organic light emitters which utilize multiple resonance‐induced thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR‐TADF) materials is gaining significant interest because of the materials' ability to efficiently generate color‐pure blue emission. However, the underlying reasons for high color purity remain unclear. It is shown here that these emitters share a common electronic basis, which is deduced from resonance structure considerations following Clar's rule, and which is termed as "poly‐heteroaromatic omni‐delocalization" (PHOD). The simple and clear design rules derived from the PHOD concept allow extending the known chemical space by new structural motifs. Based on PHOD, a set of novel high‐efficiency color‐pure emitters with brilliant deep‐blue hue is specifically designed.

Rational Molecular Design of Multifunctional Blue-Emitting Materials Based on Phenanthroimidazole Derivatives

Abstract:High-performance deep-blue emitters with external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) exceeding 5 % are still scarce in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this work, by introducing a [1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a] pyridine (TP) unit at the N1 position of phenanthroimidazole (PI), two luminescent materials, PTPTPA and PTPTPA, were obtained. Systematic photophysical analysis showed that the TP block is suitable for constructing hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) emitters. Its moderate electron-withdrawing ability and rigid planar structure can enhance the CT component while ensuring color purity. In addition, compared with PTPTPA, the additional phenyl ring of PTPBPTA not only increased the oscillator strength, but also decreased the Stokes shift. TDDFT calculations pointed out facile reverse intersystem crossing processes in PTPTPA from high-lying triplet states to the singlet excited state. A nondoped device based on PTPTPA as emitter showed impressive performance with EQEmax of 7.11 % and CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.09). At the same time, it was also an efficient host for yellow and red phosphorescent OLEDs. By doping yellow (PPYBA) and red (BTPG) phosphorescent dyes into PTPTPA, a white OLED with a high EQE of 23.85 % was achieved. The successful design of PTPTPA not only provided an optimization choice for OLED emitters, but also demonstrated the empirical rules for the design of multifunctional deep-blue emitters.

Ambipolar Phosphine Derivatives to Attain True Blue OLEDs with 6.5% EQE

Abstract:A family of new branched phosphine derivatives {Ph2N-(C6H4)n-}3P → E (E = O 1-3, n = 1-3; E = S 4-6, n = 1-3; E = Se 7-9, n = 1-3; E = AuC6F5 4-6, n = 1-3), which are the donor-acceptor type molecules, exhibit efficient deep blue room temperature fluorescence (λem = 403-483 nm in CH2Cl2 solution, λem = 400-469 nm in the solid state). Fine tuning the emission characteristics can be achieved varying the length of aromatic oligophenylene bridge -(C6H4)n-. The pyramidal geometry of central R3P → E fragment on the one hand disrupts π-conjugation between the branches to preserve blue luminescence and high triplet energy, while on the other hand provides amorphous materials to prevent excimer formation and fluorescence self-quenching. Hence, compounds 2, 3, 5, and 12 were used as emitters to fabricate nondoped and doped electroluminescent devices. The luminophore 2 (E = O, n = 2) demonstrates excellently balanced bipolar charge transport and good nondoped device performance with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 3.3% at 250 cd/m(2) and Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.15, 0.08). The doped device of 3 (E = O, n = 3) shows higher efficiency (EQEmax of 6.5, 6.0 at 100 cd/m(2)) and high color purity with CIE (0.15, 0.06) that matches the HDTV standard blue. The time-resolved electroluminescence measurement indicates that high efficiency of the device can be attributed to the triplet-triplet annihilation to enhance generation of singlet excitons.
Pyrene‐Based Emitter with a Small Energy Gap Between High‐Energy Triplet and Singlet State for High‐Performance Blue Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Reasonable energy level alignment of molecules is conducive to constructing high‐performance blue emitter. The photophysical properties difference of two pyrene‐based "hot exciton" materials CPPCN and o‐CPPCN indicate that the smaller gap between high‐energy triplet state and the singlet state can promote the reverse intersystem crossing process, which is in favor of realizing high efficiency and color purity simultaneously. Reasonable energy level alignment of molecules is conducive to constructing high‐performance blue emitter. Pyrene is a common building unit in blue emitters with a big energy gap between S1 and T1 (ΔES1‐T1) and small ΔES1‐Tn (n = 2‐3). By introducing donor and acceptor groups in pyrene, the high‐lying triplet excitons are utilized through reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) channel in obtained blue "hot exciton" emitter CPPCN. Herein, through changing the donor linking type to ortho‐substituted, the obtained derivatives o‐CPPCN exhibited deeper blue emission (λmax = 448 nm) and a higher krisc (3.1×108 s−1). The non‐doped device based on o‐CPPCN demonstrates a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 10.3% with a CIEy of 0.11, along with an exciton utilization of 55%. Photophysical measurements indicate the performance difference between the CPPCN and o‐CPPCN originates from the energy level alignment difference. Compared with CPPCN (0.26 eV), the ΔES1‐T2 of o‐CPPCN has been reduced to 0.10 eV, proving the smaller gap between T2 and S1 state can promote the RISC process. Hence, o‐CPPCN can be employed as the host to prepare "hot exciton" sensitized blue OLED due to its wide band gap and high krisc. The corresponding EQEmax of the doped device can be further improved to 11.8%.

Pyrene‐functionalized Oligofluorenes As Non‐doped Deep Blue Emitters for Solution‐processed Organic Light‐emitting Diodes

Abstract:ABSTRACTTwo pyrene‐functionalized oligofluorenes (TPA‐PyF3 and CBP‐PyF3) are prepared using the condensation reaction by the Friedel–Crafts procedure. In the produced oligomers, the triphenylamine or N,N′‐dicarbazolyl‐4,4′‐biphenyl core serves as a spacer bearing spiro‐linked fluorene moieties to form a multi‐H shaped structure. This specific structure efficiently retards the crystallization tendency of the pyrene groups, and gives the materials completely amorphous morphological structure and film forming ability. Solution‐processed OLEDs with the structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS (25 nm)/TPA‐PyF3 or CBP‐PyF3 (40 nm)/TPBI (35 nm)/Ca (10 nm)/Ag (100 nm) show low turn‐on voltages of 3.6 V, and the maximum external quantum efficiencies reach 1.78% and 2.07% for TPA‐PyF3 and CBP‐PyF3, respectively. Moreover, both devices exhibit stable deep‐blue light emission with Commission International de I'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of around (0.16, 0.09) at the brightness of 100–1000 cd m−2. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Efficient solution-processed OLEDs featuring deep-blue triplet-triplet annihilation emitter based on pyrene derivative

Abstract:Achieving high efficiency deep-blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with a CIE y < 0.08 is still terribly urgent yet challenge. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel blue triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) emitter with a fan-shape torsional molecular structure, namely TbuPyB, which is based on benzene as core and three tert -butylpyrene as arm. The photophysical, electrochemical and electroluminescent performances of TbuPyB were systematically investigated. Intense deep-blue/blue emissions peaked at 413 and 472 nm are observed in the 7 wt% doped 1,3-bis( N -carbazolyl)benzene (mCP) thin film and neat film, accompanied by absolute photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (PLQY) of 66.3% and 74.8%, respectively. Contributed by the TTA process, the solution-processed non-doped device exhibits blue emission peak at 470 nm with an impressive EQE of 10.65% and a CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.20) at the voltage of 7.8 V. In contrary, at the 7 wt% dopant concentration, an outstandingly 57 nm violet-shifted deep-blue emission at 413 nm with an EQE of 6.87% and a CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.06) was achieved in the doped device. These results schedule a novel avenue for designing highly efficient deep-blue emitter in the solution processable OLEDs.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with tunable emission colors, especially white OLEDs, have rarely been observed with a single emitter in a single emissive layer. In this paper, we report a new compound featuring a D–A–D structure, 9,9′-(pyrimidine-2,5-diylbis(2,1-phenylene))bis(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazole) (PDPC). A nondoped OLED using this compound as a single emitter exhibits unique voltage-dependent dual emission. The emission colors range from blue to orange–red with an increase in voltage, during which white electroluminescence with a Commission Internationale De L’Eclairage (CIE) coordinate of (0.35, 0.29) and a color render index (CRI) value of 93 was observed. A comparative study revealed that the dual emission simultaneously originates from the monomers and excimers of the emitter. This study provides insight into understanding the multimer-excited mechanism and developing novel color-tunable OLEDs.

Abstract:Organic blue emitters have been get more and more attention by scientists and industries in the field of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The design of efficient blue emitters, especially deep-blue ones, is still a challenge because of their intrinsic wide band-gaps and unbalanced carrier mobilities. Herein, two donor‒π‒acceptor (D‒π‒A) type molecules with phenanthro[9,10- d ]imidazole (PI) as A and pyridinyl as π-bridge were designed and synthesized by fine-turning the D moieties, namely mPTPA and mP3PCZ, respectively. Theoretical calculation and single-crystal analysis showed that there exist intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) interactions inducing small torsion angles between pyridinyl and adjacent phenyls. The rigid 9-phenyl-9 H -carbazole (PCZ) and IHB interactions makes mP3PCZ exhibiting planar configuration along the long-axis of the molecule, which could increase the orbital overlap and oscillator strength ( f os ). The solvatochromic effect manifested that both two emitters have hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) characteristics, and the excited state of mP3PCZ exhibited LE-dominated HLCT state which is beneficial for high photoluminescence efficiency. Ultimately, the non-doped devices based on mPTPA and mP3PCZ achieved maximum luminance larger than 12000 cd m −2 . Furthermore, the doped device based on mP3PCZ exhibited maximum external quantum efficiency of 5.14% with low efficiency roll-off, and with the corresponding deep-blue Commission international de l'éclairage (CIE) coordinate of (0.166, 0.085).

Abstract:This article presents three Y‐shaped pyrene‐based aggregation‐induced emission luminogens for the fabrication of blue organic light‐emitting diode devices. The devices exhibit bright blue emission (456–482 nm) with excellent electroluminescence properties with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 7.27%, high exciton utilization efficiency (77.3%), and low turn‐on voltage (≤3.1 V). The proposed concept of aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) has offered an efficient strategy to design high‐performance luminescent materials. Herein, three blue emitters containing a pyrene core decorated with either triphenylamine or tetraphenylethylene units are presented. The designed compounds Py‐TPA and Py‐2TPE are AIE or active materials with blue emission from 464 to 478 nm in the solid state, whereas Py‐2TPA is not. Moreover, the enhanced thermal stability of compounds Py‐TPA and Py‐2TPE allows for their utilization as emitter layers for the fabrication of blue organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) devices. The devices exhibit excellent electroluminescence emission with maximum λmax em in the range 456–482 nm with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 7.27%, high exciton utilization efficiency (77.3%), and low turn‐on voltage (≤3.1 V), as well as low‐efficiency roll‐off. Theoretical calculations reveal that the high exciton utilization efficiency (ƞr) originates from the triplet excitons at T2 to the lowest single excited (S1) state via a reverse intersystem crossing process following the principle of the "hot exciton" mechanism. This article not only provides powerful evidence revealing the advantages of pyrene‐based AIEgens for OLED applications, but also offers a new approach for designing pyrene‐based "hot exciton" materials for next‐generation OLEDs.

Abstract:A chrysene derivative, BPCC (6,12-bis(9-phenyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl) chrysene), possessing high thermal stability with a high glass transition temperature (T-g = 181 degrees C) was synthesized. Carbazole groups were introduced to improve its hole transporting properties and suppress crystallization. The device using BPCC as the emitter shows pure saturated blue emission color with coordinates of (0.16, 0.08). Furthermore, utilizing transporting materials with high triplet energy, e.g., TAPC (1,1-bis[4-[N,N-di(p-tolyl)-aminophenyl]cyclohexane) and TemPPB (1,2,4,5-tetra(3-pyrid-3-yl-phenyl) benzene) as the hole transport layer (HTL) and electron transport layer (ETL), respectively, the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) is 4.9%. It shows a great potential as a highly efficient pure blue emitter for organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs).
High Performance Near Ultraviolet Emitter Based on Phenanthroimidazole Via Substitutions at C6- and C9-positions

Abstract:Donor-acceptor (D-A) molecular architecture has been shown to be an effective strategy for obtaining high-performance electroluminescent materials. In this work, two D-A molecules, Ph-BPA-BPI and Py-BPA-BPI, have been synthesized by attaching highly fluorescent phenanthrene or pyrene groups to the C6- and C9-positions of a locally excited-state emitting phenylamine-phenanthroimidazole moiety. Equipped with good physical and hybridized local and charge-transfer properties, both molecules show high performances as blue emitters in nondoped organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). An OLED using Ph-BPA-BPI as the emitting layer exhibits deep-blue emission with CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.08), and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE), current efficiency (CE), and power efficiency (PE) of 4.56 %, 3.60 cdA(-1), and 3.66 lmW(-1), respectively. On the other hand, a Py-BPA-BPI-based, sky-blue OLED delivers the best results among nondoped OLEDs with CIEy values of <0.3 reported so far, for which a very low turn-on voltage of 2.15 V, CIE coordinates of (0.17, 0.29), and maximum CE, PE, and EQE values of 10.9 cdA(-1), 10.5 lmW(-1), and 5.64 %, were achieved, respectively. More importantly, both devices show little or even no efficiency roll-off and high singlet exciton-utilizing efficiencies of 36.2% for Ph-BPA-BPI and 39.2% for Py-BPA-BPI.

Abstract:Donor–acceptor‐type pyrene‐based fluorescent molecules realize highly efficient blue organic light‐emitting diodes with ultrahigh brightness (Lmax: 48 280 cd m−2), extremely low efficiency roll‐off (current efficiency: 6.6% and external quantum efficiency: 4.9% at 30 000 cd m−2) and ultralong operational lifetime (LT95: 534 and 33 732 h at an initial luminance of 1000 and 100 cd m−2). In this study, four new donor–acceptor (DA)‐type blue emitters (Py(5,9)BDPA, Py(5,9)BMTBA, Py(5,9)BDTBA, and Py (5,9)BTTBA) are developed by adopting benzene ring as A units and the diphenylamine (DPA) with different electron‐donating substituents as D units connected to 1,3‐positions and 5,9‐positions of pyrene ring, respectively. Gratifyingly, single‐crystal X‐ray analysis of the compounds demonstrates that the disgusting excimers in solid‐state could be effectively inhibited by the D units even the unsubstituted DPA resorting to the superiority of introducing D‐units at the 5,9‐positions of pyrene. The corresponding doped devices display ultrahigh luminance and extremely low efficiency roll‐off characteristics, especially for Py(5,9)BDPA, a roll‐off of external quantum efficiency is less than 4.9% when the luminance is up to 30 000 cd m−2, also showing good operation stability of devices. The optimized advanced device of the representative blue emitter Py(5,9)BDPA with a low manufacturing cost achieves extremely long LT95 (lifetime to 95% of the initial luminance) of 74 and 534 h at an initial luminance of 3000 and 1000 cd m−2, respectively. The ultralong lifetime of the emitter Py(5,9)BDPA is eye‐catching in the reported blue OLED lifetime and further demonstrates the practical applications in display and lighting of these DA‐type pyrene‐based blue emitters.
