Abstract:A phase dynamics concept is employed to study coherent structure formation in a 2D Euler fluid system. We demonstrate that the mean vorticity gradient has a spatial phase pinning effect on the local vortex excitations, which can lead to their phase synchronization and hence coherent structure formation. Criteria for the existence of a fully synchronized state, which are consistent with the classical eigenmode analysis, are given. We report a partially synchronized state. A numerical study shows that the steeper the mean vorticity gradient, the larger the coherent region. Incorporating the nonlinear convection effect, an interesting finding is that the small-scale vortex can induce phase synchronization of a large-scale vortex by flattening the mean vorticity profile, which in essence is similar to the phase-coupling mechanism in the linear scenario. These results can be immediately extended to the more general potential vorticity (PV)-conserved system, i.e., a Charney-Hasegawa-Mima (CHM) system.
