Abstract:To study the heavy metal pollution characteristics and perform a risk assessment of agricultural soil in China, the pollutants Cd, As, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Zn in agricultural planting soil were measured and analyzed in different regions using the geoaccumulation index, ecological risk index, and the human health risk index. The results demonstrated that the average concentrations of Cd and Pb were 0.959 and 37.623 mgkg-1, respectively. The concentrations of As, Cu, and Zn were highest in East China, with 17.103, 30.297, and 106.232 mg-kg-1, respectively. The average concentration of Cr was highest in South China (104.729 mgkg-1). The average concentration of heavy metals in the soil of open fields is higher than that of the soil in greenhouse farming. Overall, heavy metal pollution in soil is not considerable serious in China. However, in open-field planting soil, Cd pollution was relatively prominent; 8% of the sample sites reached Class 4 (strong pollution), with only 44% at Class 0 (no pollution). The potential ecological risk index (RI) of each region was between 80.12 and 283.15. Most of the regions were at low ecological risk, but the RI in South and Central China was over 150, indicating medium ecological risk. The noncarcinogenic risk index of heavy metals for children was 5.67-6.70 times higher than that for adults; the general HI was also higher for children. In terms of their regional distribution, heavy metals in agricultural soils in North, East, and South China pose greater risks to human health.
