Abstract:The demand for magnesium products is gradually increasing in many fields. Brine sludge is a kind of solid residue containing magnesium produced during the production of sodium carbonate, which causes serious harm to the environment. This paper presents an economical and efficient technique to recover magnesium from brine sludge of soda ash industry to produce magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (MgSO4·7H2O). According to the characteristics of brine sludge and thermodynamic analysis, the factors and reaction mechanism affecting the efficiency of the magnesium recovering process were studied. Results showed that under the optimal acid leaching conditions (sulfuric acid/magnesium molar ratio= 2.0:1, leaching duration= 60 min, stirring rate= 200 rpm, leaching temperature = 70°C), the Mg2+ leaching ratio reached as high as 93.1%. The acid leaching process of Mg2+ was in accordance with the unreacted contraction nucleation model and was mainly controlled by the internal diffusion within the interfacial field with an apparent activation energy of 24.42 kJ·mol-1. During the crystallization process of MgSO4·7H2O, more than 86.0% of the magnesium could be recovered. The product purity was above 99%, which met the HG/T 2680-2017 high-quality standard of China. The process has high environmental and economic benefits with an annual net profit of over 84 million yuan and will make it possible to prepare magnesium from brine sludge as raw material.
