Abstract:Understanding the atomic structure variation at the surface of electrode materials in contact with an electrolyte is an essential step toward achieving better electrochemical performance of rechargeable cells. Different types of water‐based aqueous solutions are suggested as alternative electrolytes to the currently used flammable organic solvents in Li‐ion batteries. However, most research on aqueous rechargeable Li‐ion cells has largely focused on the synthetic processing of materials and resulting electrochemical properties rather than in‐depth atomic‐level observation on the electrode surface where the initial charge transfer and the (de)intercalation reaction take place. By using LiFePO4 and LiCoO2 single crystals, serious P and Co dissolution from LiFePO4 and LiCoO2 into aqueous solutions without any electrochemical cycling is identified. Furthermore, both strong temperature‐dependent behavior of P dissolution in LiFePO4 and very unusual occupancy of Co in the tetrahedral interstices in LiCoO2 are directly demonstrated via atomic‐scale (scanning) transmission electron microscopy. Ab initio density functional theory calculations also reveal that this tetrahedral‐site occupation is stabilized when cation vacancies are simultaneously present in both Li and Co sites. The findings in this work emphasize the significance of direct observation on the atomic structure variation and local stability of the cathode materials.

Abstract:In lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical reaction between the electrodes and lithium is a critical process that controls the capacity, cyclability and reliability of the battery. Despite intensive study, the atomistic mechanism of the electrochemical reactions occurring in these solid-state electrodes remains unclear. Here, we show that in situ transmission electron microscopy can be used to study the dynamic lithiation process of single-crystal silicon with atomic resolution. We observe a sharp interface (∼1 nm thick) between the crystalline silicon and an amorphous Li x Si alloy. The lithiation kinetics are controlled by the migration of the interface, which occurs through a ledge mechanism involving the lateral movement of ledges on the close-packed {111} atomic planes. Such ledge flow processes produce the amorphous Li x Si alloy through layer-by-layer peeling of the {111} atomic facets, resulting in the orientation-dependent mobility of the interfaces.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is deemed to be the high-energy-density anode material for next generation batteries, but its practical application is impeded by the uneven electrodeposition during charge of battery, which leads to the low Coulombic efficiency and potential safety issue. Here, multiscale modeling is fabricated to understand the morphology evolution of Li during electrodeposition process, from the self-diffusion of Li adatoms on electrode surface, to the nucleation process, and to the formation of Li microstructures, revealing the correlation between final morphology and deposition substrates. Energy batteries and self-diffusion of Li adatom on various substrates (lithium, copper, nickel, magnesium, and silver) result in the different nucleation size, which is calculated by kinetic Monte Carlo simulation based on classical nucleation theory. Formation of Li substructures that are grown from Li nuclei, is revealed by phase field modeling coupled with cellular automaton method. Our results show that larger Li nuclei is obtained under faster self-diffusion of Li adatom, leading to the low aspect ratio of Li substructures and the subsequent morphology evolution of electrodeposited Li. Furthermore, the electrodeposition of Li is strongly regulated by the selection of substrates, giving the practical guideline of anode design in rechargeable Li metal batteries. It is worthy to mention that this method to investigate the electro-crystallization process involving nucleation and growth can be transplanted to the other metallic anode, such as sodium, potassium, zinc, magnesium, calcium and the like.

Abstract:Metal oxides hold the promise of high-capacity anodes for Li-ion batteries. Lithiation of binary metal oxides proceeds with two typical mechanisms: insertion and conversion. We characterize the two-step lithiation behavior of α-MoO3, namely, Li intercalation in the layered α-MoO3 leads to the formation of crystalline Li2MoO3 in the early stage of lithiation, and further Li insertion coverts LixMoO3 to metallic Mo and amorphous Li2O. The intercalation process is thermodynamically more favorable and is accompanied with a minor volumetric change, while the conversion reaction is kinetically slow and induces large deformation. Furthermore, instead of showing significant Li-embrittlement as seen in typical oxides, α-MoO3 remains defects free despite the nearly 100% repetitive volumetric change during lithiation cycles. The reaction mechanism, structural evolution, and mechanical behaviors are unveiled through coordinated in-situ transmission electron microcopy experiments on α-MoO3 nanobelts and first-principles computational studies. The results provide fundamental perspectives in the course of developing reliable high-capacity electrodes for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) plating/stripping behavior is directly related to the evolution of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in all-solid-state Li-metal batteries (ASSLBs). However, the complex processes at solid-solid interfaces are embedded under the solid electrolyte making it challenging to in situ analyze the real-time and dynamic processes. Here, using in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy and optical microscopy, we directly visualized the Li plating/stripping/replating behavior and measured the morphological/mechanical properties of the on-site formed SEI at nanoscale. Li spheres plating/stripping/replating at the argyrodite solid electrolyte (Li6PS5Cl)/Li electrode interface is coupled with the formation/wrinkling/inflating of the SEI on its surface. Combined with in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, stepwise formation details and physicochemical properties of SEI on the Li spheres are obtained. It's shown that large operating rates reduce the Li+-conducting networks in the SEI and worsen Li plating/stripping reversibility, while low operating rates reduce Li plating sites. Accordingly, the number of Li nucleation sites and reversibility of plating/stripping process could be effectively improved by regulation of applied current rate to reduce the overpotential and extend the cycling life. In situ analysis of the on-site formed SEI at solid-solid interfaces provided the correlation between the interfacial evolution and the electrochemical performance in ASSLBs.

Abstract:Lithium, with its high theoretical specific capacity and lowest electrochemical potential, has been recognized as the ultimate negative electrode material for next-generation lithium-based high-energy-density batteries. However, a key challenge that has yet to be overcome is the inferior reversibility of Li plating and stripping, typically thought to be related to the uncontrollable morphology evolution of the Li anode during cycling. Here we show that Li-metal texturing (preferential crystallographic orientation) occurs during electrochemical deposition, which governs the morphological change of the Li anode. X-ray diffraction pole-figure analysis demonstrates that the texture of Li deposits is primarily dependent on the type of additive or cross-over molecule from the cathode side. With adsorbed additives, like LiNO3 and polysulfide, the lithium deposits are strongly textured, with Li (110) planes parallel to the substrate, and thus exhibit uniform, rounded morphology. A growth diagram of lithium deposits is given to connect various texture and morphology scenarios for different battery electrolytes. This understanding of lithium electrocrystallization from the crystallographic point of view provides significant insight for future lithium anode materials design in high-energy-density batteries.

Abstract:Irregular Li deposition is the major reason for poor reversibility and cycle instability in Li metal batteries, even leading to safety hazards, the causes of which have been extensively explored. The structural disconnection induced by completely dissolving Li in the traditional testing protocol is a key factor accounting for irregular Li growth during the subsequent deposition process. Herein, the critical role played by the structural connectivity of electrochemical Li reservoir in subsequent Li deposition behaviors is elucidated and a morphology-performance correlation is established. The structural connection and resultant well-distributed morphology of the in-situ electrochemical Li reservoir ensure efficient electron transfer and Li+ diffusion pathway, finally leading to homogenized Li nucleation and growth. Tailoring the geometry of Li reservoir can improve the coulombic efficiency and cyclability of anode-free Li metal batteries by optimizing Li deposition behavior.

Abstract:The construction of lithiophilic sites is an effective way to achieve uniform lithium (Li) ion deposition for stably cycling Li metal batteries. However, in-depth investigations involving lithiophilic sites denseness (LSD) in impacting Li ion deposition remain unknown. Herein we propose an insight into this issue by probing the effect of LSD on determining the Li ion deposition. Experimental characterization and theoretical simulation demonstrate that rational LSD plays a vital role in both Li nucleation and the subsequent Li ion plating behaviors. By tailoring the LSD from low to high, the accompanied Li nucleation overpotentials continuously decrease. Additionally, the Li ion mobility increases first and then weakens in the subsequent Li ion plating stage. Consequently, the Li metal with a moderate LSD allows a dendrite-free morphology and satisfactory long-term cycling performances. This work affords a deeper fundamental understanding of lithiophilic chemistry that directs the development of efficient strategies to realize dendrite-free Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Commercialization of high-energy rechargeable batteries promote the rapid development of portable electronics and electric vehicles. Li metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their high theoretical energy density. Li metal anodes (LMAs) used in LMBs suffer from the disadvantages of high reactivity, interface instability and dendrite growth, which impede the practical development of the LMBs. Coulombic efficiency (CE), which depends on the type of electrolyte used, is one of the key parameters for evaluating the reversibility of battery systems. Herein, we use atomic force microscopy AFM) to study the initial plating stages and growth of the lithium metal in different electrolytes, such as 1 mol.L-1 lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6)-ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate (EC/DMC, 1 : 1, V/V), 1 mol.L-1 LiPF6-EC/DMC (1 : 1, V/V) + 5% (mass fraction, w) fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), 1 mol.L-1 lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)-1,3-dioxolane/dimethoxyethane (DOL/DME, 1 : 1, V/V) + 2% (w) lithium nitrate (LiNO3), and 4 mol.L-1 lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI)-DME, and further investigate the correlation between the CE of LMA and Li plating morphology. There are two types of Li morphologies in these electrolytes: strip-like and particle-like morphology. Since the specific surface area of particle-like deposits is much smaller than that of strip-like deposits, the particle-like morphology facilitates higher CE. (1) In the conventional carbonate electrolyte (1 mol.L-1 LiPF6-EC/DMC), Li predominantly forms strip-like deposits with large specific surface area, consuming much active Li (due to the side reaction between Li and the electrolyte). The dendrite morphology of the Li deposits lead to the formation of dead Li during the stripping process, which results in low CE. (2) FEC, an effective additive often used in carbonate electrolyte, can induce the transformation of Li plating morphology from strip-like to particle-like morphology. Therefore, the CE in FEC-containing electrolytes has been significantly improved with stable electrode/electrolyte interphase and small specific surface area of deposited Li. (3) In ether electrolytes, which have better compatibility with LMAs than carbonate electrolytes, Li metal exhibits a particle-like morphology and achieves high CE. (4) In the highly concentrated electrolyte (4 mol.L-1 LiFSI-DME), Li metal grows into large particles without dendrite formation, which hampers the parasitic side reactions, and further enhances CE.

Abstract:The morphology of lithium deposition plays a crucial factor in determining the performance of lithium metal batteries. In order to understand the lithium plating and stripping process, the in-situ cell suitable for soft X-ray microscopy was designed and fabricated. We investigated the plating modes of mossy lithium and the interactions among surrounding grains. Furthermore, we established correlations between the lithium stripping process and the morphology of lithium grains, and thus summarized four stripping modes. The surface stripping and top stripping allow for complete stripping, while the side stripping and root stripping result in the formation of “dead lithium”. These findings provide valuable insights for reducing the formation of “dead lithium” in lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:<p>Lithium (Li) metal is one of the most promising alternative anode materials of next‐generation high‐energy‐density batteries demanded for advanced energy storage in the coming fourth industrial revolution. Nevertheless, disordered Li deposition easily causes short lifespan and safety concerns and thus severely hinders the practical applications of Li metal batteries. Tremendous efforts are devoted to understanding the mechanism for Li deposition, while the final deposition morphology tightly relies on the Li nucleation and early growth. Here, the recent progress in insightful and influential models proposed to understand the process of Li deposition from nucleation to early growth, including the heterogeneous model, surface diffusion model, crystallography model, space charge model, and Li‐SEI model, are highlighted. Inspired by the abovementioned understanding on Li nucleation and early growth, diverse anode‐design strategies, which contribute to better batteries with superior electrochemical performance and dendrite‐free deposition behavior, are also summarized. This work broadens the horizon for practical Li metal batteries and also sheds light on more understanding of other important metal‐based batteries involving the metal deposition process.</p>

Abstract:Li‐containing alloys and metallic deposits offer substantial Li+ storage capacities as alternative anodes to commercial graphite. However, the thermodynamically in sequence, yet kinetically competitive mechanism between Li solubility in the solid solution and intermediate alloy‐induced Li deposition remains debated, particularly across the multiple scales. The elucidation of the mechanism is rather challenging due to the dynamic alloy evolution upon the non‐equilibrium, transient lithiation processes under coupled physical fields. Here, we comprehensively investigate influential factors governing Li solubility in the Li‐Zn alloy as a demonstrative model, spanning from the bulk electrolyte solution to the ion diffusion within the electrode. Through real‐time phase tracking and spatial distribution analysis of intermediate alloy/Li metallic species at varied temperatures, current densities and particle sizes, the driving force of Li solubility and metallic plating along the Li migration pathway are probed in‐depth. This study investigates the correlation between kinetics (pronounced concentration polarization, miscibility gap in lattice grains) and rate‐limiting interfacial charge transfer thermodynamics in dedicating the Li diffusion into the solid solution. Additionally, the lithiophilic alloy sites with the balanced diffusion barrier and Li adsorption energy are explored to favor the homogeneous metal plating, which provides new insights for the rational innovation of high‐capacity alloy/metallic anodes. Abstract:Developing new liquid electrolyte is a promising approach to enable the next-generation high-energy Li metal battery for wide-ranging application such as electric vehicles (EV). However, the high reactivity of Li metal interface renders it crucial to form favorable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), via active electrolyte decomposition, for highly reversible operation of Li-metal anode (LMA). Therefore, deeply understanding how the molecular structures of electrolyte species precisely control both the interfacial reactivity and the operational reversibility of LMA, can further guide and inspire new electrolyte systems with progressively improved battery performance. Herein, we systematically investigated the impact of Li salts with different imide anions dissolved in ether-based solvent, on the resulting Coulombic efficiencies (CE) of LMA, whereas beneficial and detrimental molecular motifs were first identified. By leveraging the non-washing XPS protocol newly developed at Stanford, we managed to uncover the distinct molecular reactivity leading to reductive bond cleavage as well as new bond formation at Li-metal potential. Such nanoscale reactivity of SEI-forming reactions was discovered to profoundly govern the macroscopic performance of LMA, which simultaneously emphasized the significance of electric double layer (EDL). Importantly, aided by gas-titration experiments to quantify the by-products in SEI, we revealed the critical molecular origins of irreversible capacity loss of LMA during continuous Li-metal plating and stripping. These new insights allow us to formulate rational strategies of molecular engineering to design LMA interface with high reversibility and minimal side reactivity.
Observing the structural diversity of electrochemically deposited lithium metal in three dimensions

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are considered to be next-generation high-energy-density storage devices because of the ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity and low reduction potential of the Li metal anode. The electroplating/stripping behavior of Li metal and the properties of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) are key issues that must be well understood. Traditional structural investigations using electron microscopy can facilitate this understanding, but they lack three-dimensional information. Herein, the burgeoning technique, cryogenic electron tomography, is used in the study of LMBs to visualize the morphology of electrochemically deposited Li metal and the SEI in various electrolytes. High-aspect-ratio dendrites are formed in ethylene carbonate-diethyl carbonate (EC-DEC) and EC-DEC/vinylene carbonate electrolytes, whereas irregularly shaped Li metal is formed in an EC-DEC-fluoroethylene carbonate electrolyte. In contrast, the use of a 1,3-dioxolane-1,2-dimethoxyethane-LiNO 3 electrolyte produces spherical Li metal. Three-dimensional reconstructions of the Li dendrites formed after half-charging revealed polyhedral-shaped "dead Li" tightly wrapped by a folded SEI layer, indicating the mechanism of "dead Li" formation. The non-uniform stripping rate of Li and the elimination of electron conduction paths by the surrounding SEI husks lead to the formation of such "dead Li."

Abstract:Interfacial processes of lithium (Li) deposition and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation are key determinants of the safety and performance in high-energy Li metal batteries. With the vigorous growth of effective strategies for stabilizing the interfaces, high-resolution and in situ characterization techniques are contemporaneously needed for probing and regulating the underlying mechanisms of these two processes and their interrelation. Therefore, we introduce in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) that enables direct observation of the nanoscale morphology and dynamic evolution of the Li/electrolyte interfaces in working environments. Inhomogeneous SEI with nanoparticles (NPs) forms in traditional electrolyte, which extends with chain-like wrinkles as dendrite nucleates. By precisely controlling the concentration of lithium nitrate additive, we construct a compact bilayer SEI with a thin amorphous film covering a NP-packed layer structurally, promoting the uniform Li dissolution/deposition. This in situ AFM visualization in Li metal batteries highlights direct insights into distinct nanostructures and growth dynamics of nitrate-mediated SEI film at Li anode, and provides a universal and convenient technique for interfacial analysis and mechanistic understanding of Li metal anodes.

Abstract:Using lithium metal as the anode is a promising way to raise the energy density of batteries, but inevitable lithium dendrite growth hinders the development of this kind of batteries. Albeit great efforts were devoted to uncovering the mystery of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), which determines the stability of the plating and stripping of lithium metal, our understanding of SEI at the atomic scale is limited due to its complex structure and composition. This work proposes a computational framework, based on the reactive force field molecular dynamics, for simulating the SEI formation. Our results suggest the SEI in the standard EC/DEC electrolyte resembles a heterogeneous mosaic structure with an organic-rich outer layer and an inorganic-rich inner layer as the consequence of the bottom-up growth sequence. When lithium nitrate is present in the electrolyte, the preferential reduction of lithium nitrate effectively regulates the electrolyte decomposition for rendering a bilayer structure with the lithium nitrate reduction products, Li 3 N and LiN x O y , on top of the amorphous polymer matrix. Although these N-containing compounds are good lithium-ion conducting materials for retaining a uniform, fast lithium-ion transport through the SEI, we observe a significant decrease in the mechanical performance due to the high-porosity structure.

Insights into lithium ion deposition on lithium metal surfaces

Abstract:Lithium metal is among the most promising anodes for the next generation of batteries due to its high theoretical energy density and high capacity. Challenges such as extreme reactivity and lithium dendrite formation have kept lithium metal anodes away from practical applications. However, the underlying mechanisms of Li ion deposition from the electrolyte solution onto the anode surface are still poorly understood due to their inherent complexity. In this work, density functional theory calculations and thermodynamic integration via constrained molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to study the electron and ion transfer between lithium metal slab and the electrolyte in absence of an external field. We explore the effect of the solvent chemistry and structure, distance of the solvated complex from the surface, anion-cation separation, and concentration of Li-salts on the deposition of lithium ions from the electrolyte phase onto the surface. Ethylene carbonate (EC), 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), 1,3-dioxolane (DOL), and mixtures of them are used as solvents. These species compete with the salt anion and the Li cation for electron transfer from the surface. It is found that the structure and properties of the solvation shell around the lithium cation has a great influence on the ability of the cation to diffuse as well as on its surrounding electron environment. DME molecules allow easier motion of the lithium ion compared with EC and DOL molecules. The slow growth approach allows the study of energy barriers for the ion diffusion and desolvation during the deposition pathway. This method helps elucidating the underlying mechanisms on lithium-ion deposition and provides a better understanding of the early stages of Li nucleation.

Abstract:In recent years, due to its great promise in boosting the energy density of lithium batteries for future energy storage, research on the Li metal anode, as an alternative to the graphite anode in Li‐ion batteries, has gained significant momentum. However, the practical use of Li metal anodes has been plagued by unstable Li (re)deposition and poor cyclability. Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to the stabilization of Li metal anodes, the mechanisms of electrochemical (re‐)deposition/dissolution of Li and solid‐electrolyte‐interphase (SEI) formation remain elusive. This article highlights the recent mechanistic understandings and observations of Li deposition/dissolution and SEI formation achieved from advanced characterization techniques and simulation methods, and discusses major limitations and open questions in these processes. In particular, the authors provide their perspectives on advanced and emerging/potential methods for obtaining new insights into these questions. In addition, they give an outlook into cutting‐edge interdisciplinary research topics for Li metal anodes. It pushes beyond the current knowledge and is expected to accelerate development toward a more in‐depth and comprehensive understanding, in order to guide future research on Li metal anodes toward practical application. This perspective article highlights recent developments in understanding of the mechanisms of lithium deposition/dissolution and solid‐electrolyte‐interphase (SEI) formation and identifies the major limitations and open questions in these processes. It also provides the authors’ perspectives on advanced characterization and simulation methods to promote a more in‐depth and comprehensive understanding, and to guide future research on Li metal anodes toward applications.
