Abstract:This research examines how government carbon tax affects the coordination of container-sharing supply chains. We consider a stylised container shipping system where two container shipping carriers provide international freight transportation services and share empty containers between each other. We first consider the case of perfect collaboration where the two carriers operate under a centralised decision-making mechanism. We obtain the optimal amount of empty containers to be shared subject to the exogenous impact of the government carbon tax. Secondly, we design a decentralised decision-making model that assumes the two carriers are bound by a revenue-sharing contract that determines the split of benefits generated from container-sharing. It has been found that the container-sharing supply chain can be conditionally coordinated under the contract under a given carbon tax. We determine the exact conditions that make the container-sharing supply chain coordinated. Our study provides some managerial insights into how carbon tax affects the container-sharing.
