Abstract:We propose a design for a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF), with a quasi-elliptical core region stacked by modified periodic capillary tubes. This type of HC-PBF possesses birefringence > 4.6×10-4 in the wavelength range of 1.46-1.59 μm, and a low confinement loss of <; 0.02 dB/m, while maintaining single-mode operation.

Abstract:We report generation of ultrashort UV pulses by soliton self-compression in kagom\'e-style hollow-core photonic crystal fiber filled with ambient air. Pump pulses with energy 2.6 uJ and duration 54 fs at 400 nm were compressed temporally by a factor of 5, to a duration of ~11 fs. The experimental results are supported by numerical simulations, showing that both Raman and Kerr effects play a role in the compression dynamics. The convenience of using ambient air, and the absence of glass windows that would distort the compressed pulses, makes the setup highly attractive as the basis of an efficient table-top UV pulse compressor.

Abstract:Gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is used for efficient nonlinear temporal compression of femtosecond laser pulses, two main schemes being direct soliton-effect self-compression and spectral broadening followed by phase compensation. To obtain stable compressed pulses, it is crucial to avoid decoherence through modulational instability (MI) during spectral broadening. Here, we show that changes in dispersion due to spectral anti-crossings between the fundamental-core mode and core wall resonances in anti-resonant-guiding hollow-core PCF can strongly alter the MI gain spectrum, enabling MI-free pulse compression for optimized fiber designs. The results are important, since MI cannot always be suppressed by pumping in the normal dispersion regime.
Photoionization-induced emission of tunable few-cycle mid-IR dispersive waves in gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber

Abstract:We propose a scheme for the emission of few-cycle dispersive waves in the mid-infrared using hollow-core photonic crystal fibers filled with noble gas. The underlying mechanism is the formation of a plasma cloud by a self-compressed, sub-cycle pump pulse. The resulting free-electron population modifies the fiber dispersion, allowing phase-matched access to dispersive waves at otherwise inaccessible frequencies, well into the mid-IR. Remarkably, the pulses generated turn out to have durations of the order of two optical cycles. In addition, this ultrafast emission, which occurs even in the absence of a zero dispersion point between pump and mid-IR wavelengths, is tunable over a wide frequency range simply by adjusting the gas pressure. These theoretical results pave the way to a new generation of compact, fiber-based sources of few-cycle mid-IR radiation.

Abstract:We demonstrate generation of 7.6 fs near-UV pulses centered at 400 nm via 8-fold soliton-effect self-compression in an Ar-filled hollow-core kagom\'e-style photonic crystal fiber with ultrathin core walls. Analytical calculations of the effective compression length and soliton order permit adjustment of the experimental parameters, and numerical modelling of the nonlinear pulse dynamics in the fiber accurately predict the spectro-temporal profiles of the self-compressed pulses. After compensation of phase distortion introduced by the optical elements along the beam path from the fiber to the diagnostics, 71% of the pulse energy was in the main temporal lobe, with peak powers in excess of 0.2 GW. The convenient set-up opens up new opportunities for time-resolved studies in spectroscopy, chemistry and materials science.

Abstract:We present nonlinear pulse compression of a high-power SESAM-modelocked thin-disk laser (TDL) using an Ar-filled hypocycloid-core Kagome Hollow-Core Photonic Crystal Fiber (HC-PCF). The output of the modelocked Yb:YAG TDL with 127 W average power, a pulse repetition rate of 7 MHz, and a pulse duration of 740 fs was spectrally broadened 16-fold while propagating in a Kagome HC-PCF containing 13 bar of static Argon gas. Subsequent compression tests performed using 8.4% of the full available power resulted in a pulse duration as short as 88 fs using the spectrally broadened output from the fiber. Compressing the full transmitted power through the fiber (118 W) could lead to a compressed output of >100 W of average power and >100 MW of peak power with an average power compression efficiency of 88%. This simple laser system with only one ultrafast laser oscillator and a simple single-pass fiber pulse compressor, generating both high peak power >100 MW and sub-100-fs pulses at megahertz repetition rate, is very interesting for many applications such as high harmonic generation and attosecond science with improved signal-to-noise performance.

Abstract:We studied the underlying mechanism of broadband dispersive-wave emission within a resonance band of gas-filled anti-resonant hollow-core fiber. Both theoretical and experimental results unveiled that the high-order soliton, launched into the hollow-core fiber, experienced two stages of pulse compression, resulting in a multi-peak structure of the dispersive-wave spectrum. Over the first-stage pulse compression, a sharp increase of the pulse peak power triggered the first time of dispersion-wave emission, and simultaneously caused ionization of the noble gas filled in the fiber core. Strong soliton-plasma interactions led to blue shifting of the pump pulse, and the blue-shifted pulse experienced a decreasing dispersion value in the fiber waveguide, resulting in an increase of its soliton order. Then, the second-stage pulse compression due to the high-order soliton effect triggered the second time of dispersive-wave emission at a phase-matched frequency slightly lower than that in the first stage. Multi-peak spectra of the output dispersive-waves and their formation dynamics were clearly observed in our experiments, which can be understood using a delicate coupling mechanism among three nonlinear effects including high-order-soliton compression, soliton-plasma interaction and phase-matched dispersive-wave emission. The output broadband dispersive-wave could be potentially compressed to sub-30 fs duration using precise chirp-compensation technique.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the phase-matched dispersive wave (DW) emission within the resonance band of a 25-cm-long gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) can be strongly enhanced by the photoionization effect of the pump pulse. In the experiments we observe that as the pulse energy increases, the pump pulse gradually shifts to shorter wavelengths due to soliton-plasma interactions. When the central wavelength of the blueshifting soliton is close to the resonance band of the HC-PCF, high-efficiency energy transfer from the pump light to the DW in the visible region can be obtained. During this DW emission process, we also observe that the spectral center of the DW gradually shifts to longer wavelengths leading to a slightly-increased DW bandwidth, which can be well explained as the consequence of phase-matched coupling between the pump pulse and the DW. In particular, at an input pulse energy of 6 uJ, the spectral ratio of the DW at the fiber output is measured to be as high as ~53% together with a conversion efficiency of ~19%. These experimental results, explained by numerical simulations, pave the way to high-brightness light sources based on high-efficiency frequency-upconversion processes in gas-filled HC-PCFs.

Abstract:Frequency blue shift of optical solitons, due to light-plasma interactions is an important nonlinear process of laser frequency up-conversion in gas-filled hollow-core fibers, which can be applied for generating ultrafast pulses with tunable wavelengths covering infrared and visible regimes. While the mechanism of photoionization in this frequency up-conversion process has been well studied for a few years, the spectral width tunability of output ultrafast pulses generated in such a hollow-core fiber system has not been comprehensively investigated yet. Here, we demonstrate that the theory of adiabatic soliton propagation could be used to understand the spectral bandwidth evolution of photoionization-induced blue-shifted solitons in gas-filled hollow-core anti-resonant fibers. Experimentally, through varying the gas pressure in the hollow-core fiber and the input pulse energy, high-repetition-rate (10 kHz) tunable ultrafast pulses were obtained at the fiber output with a central wavelength tuning range from similar to 900 nm to similar to 650 nm and a bandwidth tuning range (at 700 nm) from similar to 100 nm to similar to 180 nm, corresponding to chirp-compensated pulse width tuning from 7.2 fs to 5.4 fs. These experimental results agree well with the theoretical predictions, and the femtosecond visible light source with high-flexible pulse parameters, demonstrated here, may have some potentials in ultrafast spectroscopy and nonlinear-optics applications.

Abstract:Since their inception, about 20 years ago, hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and its gas-filled form are now establishing themselves both as a platform in advancing our knowledge on how light is confined and guided in microstructured dielectric optical waveguides, and a remarkable enabler in a large and diverse range of fields. The latter spans from nonlinear and coherent optics, atom optics and laser metrology, quantum information to high optical field physics and plasma physics. Here, we give a historical account of the major seminal works, we review the physics principles underlying the different optical guidance mechanisms that have emerged and how they have been used as design tools to set the current state-of-the-art in the transmission performance of such fibers. In a second part of this review, we give a nonexhaustive, yet representative, list of the different applications where gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber played a transformative role, and how the achieved results are leading to the emergence of a new field, which could be coined “Gas photonics”. We particularly stress on the synergetic interplay between glass, gas, and light in founding this new fiber science and technology.

Abstract:Soliton self-compression is demonstrated during the propagation of high spatial modes in hollow core fibers in the near-infrared spectral region, taking advantage of their negative dispersion response. We have found that there is always an optimum spatial mode to observe this phenomenon, compressing the pulses down to the single-cycle regime without needing any external compression device and with a consequent increase in the output peak power. Our result is relevant for any ultrashort laser application in which few- or single-cycle pulses are crucial.

Abstract:Gas-filled hollow core fibers allow the generation of single-cycle pulses at megahertz repetition rates. When coupled with difference frequency generation, they can be an ideal driver for the generation of carrier-envelope phase stable, octave-spanning pulses in the short-wavelength infrared. In this work, we investigate the dependence of the polarization state in gas-filled hollow-core fibers on the subsequent difference frequency generation stage. We show that by adjusting the input polarization state of light in geometrically symmetric systems, such as hollow-core fibers, one can achieve precise control over the polarization state of the output pulses. Importantly, this manipulation preserves the temporal characteristics of the ultrashort pulses generated, especially when operating near the single-cycle regime. We leverage this property to boost the down-conversion efficiency of these pulses in a type I difference frequency generation stage. Our technique overcomes the bandwidth and dispersion constraints of the previous methods that rely on broadband waveplates or adjustment of crystal axes relative to the laboratory frame. This advancement is crucial for experiments demanding pure polarization states in the eigenmodes of the laboratory frame.

Abstract:Ultrafast broadband ultraviolet radiation is of importance in spectroscopy and photochemistry, since high photon energies enable single-photon excitations and ultrashort pulses allow time-resolved studies. Here we report the use of gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCFs) for efficient ultrafast nonlinear optics in the ultraviolet. Soliton self-compression of 400 nm pulses of (unprecedentedly low) ~500 nJ energies down to sub-6-fs durations is achieved, as well as resonant emission of tunable dispersive waves from these solitons. In addition, we discuss the generation of a flat supercontinuum extending from the deep ultraviolet to the visible in a hydrogen-filled HC-PCF. Comparisons with argon-filled fibers show that the enhanced Raman gain at high frequencies makes the hydrogen system more efficient. As HC-PCF technology develops, we expect these fiber-based ultraviolet sources to lead to new applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate, for the first time, the application of rare-gas filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibres (HC-PCFs) as tuneable ultraviolet light sources in femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. The time-resolved photoelectron imaging technique reveals non-adiabatic dynamical processes operating on three distinct timescales in the styrene molecule following excitation over the 242-258 nm region. These include ultrafast (<100 fs) internal conversion between the S2(pipi*) and S1(pipi*) electronic states and subsequent intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution within S1(pipi*). Compact, cost-effective and highly efficient bench-top HC-PCF sources have huge potential to open up many exciting new avenues for ultrafast spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet spectral regions. We anticipate that our initial validation of this approach will generate important impetus in this area

Abstract:While industrial-grade Yb-based amplifiers have become very prevalent, their limited gain bandwidth has created a large demand for robust spectral broadening techniques that allow for few-cycle pulse compression. In this work, we perform a comparative study between several atomic and molecular gases as media for spectral broadening in a hollow-core fiber geometry. Exploiting nonlinearities such as self-phase modulation, self-steepening, and stimulated Raman scattering, we explore the extent of spectral broadening and its dependence on gas pressure, the critical power for self-focusing, and the optimal regime for few-cycle pulse compression. Using a 3-mJ, 200-fs input laser pulses, we achieve ~ 15 fs, few-cycle pulses with >70% overall energy transmission efficiency. The optimal parameters can be scaled for higher or lower input pulse energies with appropriate gas parameters and fiber geometry.

Abstract:Starting from a femtosecond ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier, we demonstrate the generation of near Fourier transform-limited high peak power picosecond pulses through spectral compression in a nonlinear solid-state-based multipass cell. Input 260 fs pulses negatively chirped to 2.4 ps are spectrally compressed from 6 nm down to 1.1 nm, with an output energy of 13.5 µJ and near transform-limited pulses of 2.1 ps. A pulse shaper included in the femtosecond source provides some control over the output spectral shape, in particular its symmetry. The spatial quality and spatio-spectral homogeneity are conserved in this process. These results show that the use of multipass cells allows energy scaling of spectral compression setups while maintaining the spatial properties of the laser beam.

Abstract:This article offers an extensive survey of results obtained using hybrid photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) which constitute one of the most active research fields in contemporary fiber optics. The ability to integrate novel and functional materials in solid- and hollow-core PCFs through various post-processing methods has enabled new directions towards understanding fundamental linear and nonlinear phenomena as well as novel application aspects, within the fields of optoelectronics, material and laser science, remote sensing and spectroscopy. Here the recent progress in the field of hybrid PCFs is reviewed from scientific and technological perspectives, focusing on how different fluids, solids and gases can significantly extend the functionality of PCFs. In the first part of this review we discuss the most important efforts by research groups around the globe to develop tunable linear and nonlinear fiber-optic devices using PCFs infiltrated with various liquids, glasses, semiconductors and metals. The second part is concentrated on the most recent and state-of-the-art advances in the field of gas-filled hollow-core PCFs. Extreme ultrafast gas-based nonlinear optics towards light generation in the extreme wavelength regions of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), pulse propagation and compression dynamics in both atomic and molecular gases, and novel soliton - plasma interactions are reviewed. A discussion of future prospects and directions is also included.
